The gameplay of Mortal Shell 2 is widely praised for its innovative shell mechanic, fluid and satisfying combat, and the removal of stamina bars which encourages aggressive, tactical play. Players enjoy the variety of builds, defensive options (parry, guard, harden), and the depth added by unique shells and tarstones, though some find the parry and boss mechanics inconsistent or frustrating. However, the game suffers from balancing issues, clunky or buggy bosses, repetitive enemy encounters, and long runbacks that detract from the overall experience, especially in the late game.

    • “Instead in this game, you have unique character skills, parries, mechanics to encourage aggression and weaving defense and offense together, etc.”
    • “Expanded shell mechanics: swapping between shells mid-fight feels smoother than ever, allowing for incredible synergy, build diversity, and tactical depth when taking on tough boss encounters.”
    • “The core combat and mechanics are just so satisfying, and building out your character feels awesome—tinkering with different shells, stats, and abilities to refine your playstyle gives every fight so much depth.”
    • “The bosses are all very buggy and have poorly thought out combat mechanics.”
    • “Dodging and parrying is somewhat inconsistent on what will register and what will not, making some bosses a real challenge to overcome because of the basic core mechanics failing.”
    • “Mechanically this game is pure torture, riddled with bugs, awful boss encounters, and a myriad of other poor design decisions such as spacing out the bonfire between anywhere from 20-100 enemy encounters in a game where any enemy has the ability to 1-3 shot you if they feel like it.”

The game boasts stunning, dark, and highly detailed graphics with a unique, grimdark, gothic, and metal-inspired art style that many find captivating and atmospheric. Visuals are well-optimized for various systems, running smoothly even on high settings, with impressive use of Unreal Engine 5 technology and cinematic effects enhancing combat and exploration. While some note occasional bugs, minor performance hitches, or repetitive environments, the overall consensus is that the graphics are a standout feature, delivering an immersive and visually striking experience.

    • “The dark atmosphere is unmatched, the graphics are stunning, and the combat system feels incredibly tight, weighty, and deeply satisfying.”
    • “Phenomenal graphics. The graphics are phenomenal, the environments, lighting, textures, character detail, and overall atmosphere are seriously impressive.”
    • “Mortal shell 2 does everything right: the combat is challenging and very satisfying, the level design is excellent, the atmosphere and the graphics are beautiful.”
    • “Now the CPU is running 12~15°C hotter, graphics are laggy/choppy, the keyboard has input delay (in certain situations the keyboard only reacts after the character finishes the visual movement, for example healing doesn't apply if you run—you have to stop in combat).”
    • “Graphical bugs were so bad it looked almost like a PS2 game.”
    • “Also for a game running on Unreal Engine 5, the literal only pro should be the graphics but even on ultra this game looks like something from 2018 and to get these visuals you sacrifice performance for no reason.”
  • optimization

    467 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
51% positive mentions, 38% neutral mentions, 11% negative mentions

Optimization for this Unreal Engine 5 game is generally praised as impressive and well-handled, delivering smooth performance with high frame rates even on mid-range hardware. While most users report stable, buttery-smooth gameplay and efficient utilization of visuals without significant stuttering or crashes, some encounter occasional frame drops, stuttering, or rare bugs, especially in specific zones or late game areas. Overall, the game is notably well-optimized compared to many contemporary UE5 titles, though continued patches are expected to address the sporadic performance hiccups some players experience.

    • “Performance-wise, the release had some bizarre and sometimes game-breaking bugs, but a big patch improved things and the game now runs really well, achieving easy 110+ fps on high-ultra 2k settings without frame generation using FSR4 quality, outperforming many other UE5 titles which often struggle at 50-70 fps on similar settings.”
    • “One of the things I was most pleasantly surprised by is how optimized it seems to be, delivering very smooth and stable performance even with demanding visuals, which is quite rare for new Unreal Engine 5 games these days.”
    • “This game is incredibly well optimized compared to many recent titles; I played nearly 20 hours on my Steam Deck with no performance issues and experienced zero crashes or stutters, making it one of the most optimized UE5 games I have seen.”
    • “Performance stutters constantly, even on a Ryzen 9, which is a feat.”
    • “I really want to like this game, I really do, but I keep getting frame rate drops and stuttering which makes the game almost unplayable and it's annoying the hell out of me.”
    • “Pre-ordered for day one and the shaders are broken, FSR is broken, frame generation is broken, massive stuttering, 30-40 constant fps drops, etc. It's a shame.”
  • story

    457 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
29% positive mentions, 67% neutral mentions, 4% negative mentions

The story in this soulslike game is generally seen as cryptic, fragmented, and lacking depth or strong narrative cohesion, often taking a backseat to the gameplay and combat. While individual shells have their own intriguing backstories that add flavor and some world-building, the main overarching plot is often described as vague, confusing, or underdeveloped, with many players finding the final payoff unsatisfying. Despite this, the atmosphere, setting, and environmental storytelling partially compensate, appealing to fans who prioritize exploration and combat over a traditional, well-defined storyline.

    • “The story is told via shell memories which you unlock as you level each shell.”
    • “At the time of writing this review, I have completed the memories of Proxima, Genessa, Lazlo and Eredrim, and each story presented through their memories has made me extremely invested in who they were and by extension, further invested in the world their stories take place in.”
    • “The overarching story leaves a lot to be desired but the individual stories of the shells acquired by leveling them up are very entertaining and give an appropriate amount of backstory and insight into who they were and why they are worthy shells of the harbinger.”
    • “The story relies heavily on what the shells did before you find them because the main story is a ketamine fever dream that feels pointless.”
    • “The story is very lacking for a game that is constantly trying to press upon you the importance of the objective you are set on, I understand it is a soulslike game and that it isn't something new to me.”
    • “The story is so bare bones that it is essentially the absolute minimum you would need to set the world for this game and anything to make sense.”
  • music

    393 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
36% positive mentions, 55% neutral mentions, 9% negative mentions

The game's music generally receives praise for its atmospheric and metal-inspired soundscapes that fit the dark, gritty tone, especially during boss fights and key moments. However, many reviewers criticize the soundtrack for its lack of variety, with repetitive or nearly identical boss music tracks and sparse ambient music during exploration, leading to a less memorable and sometimes bland audio experience. Overall, while the music contributes well to the game's atmosphere, the limited number of tracks and low prominence of the soundtrack diminish its impact.

    • “The atmosphere, the music, the vibe, when you put all of this together with the gameplay and the lore, it's a must-have experience.”
    • “Special mention: the icing on the cake of this game's suffocating atmosphere is its masterful ambient soundtrack, courtesy of veteran artists Brian Lustmord and Liam "Mizmor" Neighbors.”
    • “Love the atmosphere, graphics and music.”
    • “Every single boss fight in the game has a generic metal soundtrack that all can meld into each other, and there's not a single time where I actually noticed music was playing in the background.”
    • “The soundtrack is incredibly repetitive with very little musical identity between areas or important encounters. Very few bosses have memorable designs, mechanics, arenas, or music.”
    • “The game has basically no music or the music is so faint and forgettable that I actually forgot it existed, which harms the atmosphere and immersion.”
  • stability

    341 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
13% positive mentions, 0% neutral mentions, 87% negative mentions

The game suffers from numerous bugs, glitches, and stability issues, particularly in boss fights and late-game content, leading to frustrating crashes, freezes, and inconsistent hit detection. While performance is generally well-optimized and runs smoothly on various systems, the abundance of game-breaking bugs and poor enemy AI significantly detracts from the experience, making it advisable to wait for future patches before playing.

    • “No crashing, no glitches and optimized like nothing I have seen in years.”
    • “The game runs great with stable framerate and no glitches.”
    • “Of course there might be little things that could be improved but the game just released, and is not a half finished game, it runs great and I did not encounter any game breaking bugs.”
    • “The final boss is very buggy, often ending up above the arena, and has a grab attack that is extremely fast and difficult to read, making it essentially a one or two shot attack.”
    • “This is the single most bug-riddled game I have ever played; I got constantly stuck in walls, encountered enemies teleporting, and experienced so much more that it is almost unplayable at times.”
    • “The last area is a huge buggy mess: bosses chain skills without finishing animations, hitboxes are nearly non-existent, summon AI is broken attacking invisible or inactive objects, and narrow bridges cause frequent falls during skill animations.”
  • atmosphere

    339 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
63% positive mentions, 36% neutral mentions, 1% negative mentions

The atmosphere consistently receives high praise for its dark, gritty, and immersive qualities, often being described as one of the game's strongest elements that effectively draws players into its grim, brooding world. While early and mid-game areas and music are lauded for their fitting and atmospheric design, some note a decline in atmosphere quality and variety, particularly in later zones and boss encounters. Overall, the game's haunting visuals, ambient sound design, and unique gothic world-building create a compelling and intense mood that stands out among soulslike games.

    • “The games just oozes atmosphere which really draws you into this dark world.”
    • “Mortal shell 2 does exactly what a sequel should do: it takes the core identity of the original and massively expands the combat sandbox, world scale, and build variety without losing the gritty, oppressive atmosphere.”
    • “The atmosphere, the music, the vibe, when you put all of this together with the gameplay and the lore, it's a must-have experience.”
    • “The atmosphere also starts to lose its appeal, especially in the final area, which felt like a complete drag.”
    • “The combat and shell system are great, and the atmosphere can be fantastic, but repetitive enemies, weak boss design, and disappointing later areas really hold it back.”
    • “The world has so much atmosphere and detail that it genuinely feels like a proper next-gen showcase, while still staying true to the soul of the first game.”
  • grinding

    223 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
1% positive mentions, 1% neutral mentions, 98% negative mentions

Grinding in the game is widely regarded as tedious and excessively time-consuming, particularly in the mid to late stages where scarce checkpoints lead to long, frustrating runbacks. Progression systems like leveling tarstones, upgrading weapons, and experimenting with different shells are often criticized for requiring repetitive farming with minimal immediate reward, making build experimentation and switching cumbersome. While the game has engaging combat and unique mechanics, the frequency and length of grinding, coupled with inflated enemy health and punishing design choices, turn many encounters into dull slogs rather than satisfying challenges.

    • “They made a challenging game but kept the combat fun and not tedious.”
    • “Going for the 100%, seems quite easy from the achievement, no grinding needed or NG+ needed.”
    • “The boss has way too much HP; it's not an engaging difficulty, it's just a tedious spongy grind and completely ruined the finale for me.”
    • “Combine that with frustrating boss design and crashes that can erase your progress, and you have an experience that feels more tedious than challenging.”
    • “Leveling in this game is an absolute joke with marginal, and I mean marginal, like +1 stat bonus when leveling a lot of the time which makes no sense considering the grind it takes to farm gloom, not including the fact of how much grinding is also needed for shell points as well.”
  • humor

    93 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
100% positive mentions, 0% neutral mentions, 0% negative mentions

The game's humor is a notable blend of dark fantasy and absurd, goofy elements, often providing a refreshing contrast to its grim atmosphere through quirky bosses, funny NPC dialogue, and humorous glitches. While some boss fights and story moments are awkward or poorly executed comedically, many players appreciate the developer's subtle jokes, easter eggs, and the game's self-aware tone that adds charm and levity to the challenging gameplay. Bugs and odd enemy behaviors, though sometimes frustrating, frequently contribute unexpected comedic moments, making humor an integral and memorable part of the experience.

    • “I like how the world is kind of depressing visually but the game has a sense of humor with some really goofy bosses and NPCs, it makes for a nice juxtaposition. That was actually the reason I got this in the first place because of the ridiculous boss that was the shepherd in this otherwise dark and gritty game. This dude you fight turns you into a sheep and the game still lets you play and the sheep was actually viable?”
    • “Despite the over-the-top grimdark aesthetic, it also has a great, absurdist sense of humor, with some really creative and weird bosses and places to discover.”
    • “Throughout my time playing I've had just as many moments enjoying a funny little detail or item as compared to the moments where I was soaking in the atmosphere or locking in for a tough fight.”
  • replayability

    45 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
38% positive mentions, 55% neutral mentions, 7% negative mentions

Replayability is largely driven by the distinct shells and their unique playstyles, offering substantial build variety and encouraging experimentation across multiple playthroughs. However, limited resources, upgrade costs, and design choices in New Game+ cycles somewhat hamper the replay value, making grinding feel necessary and reducing variety incentives. Overall, while the game provides significant replay potential and engaging mechanics, some players feel the replayability is forced rather than naturally motivating.

    • “This game has a massive amount of replay value just based off of the mechanic and the shell system. The game's strength lies in trying to find the right tarstones that complement the shell you're using.”
    • “Every power fantasy is a fully realized playstyle that warrants replay value, encourages experimentation, and offers hidden interactions and mechanics.”
    • “There is tons of replay value with all the different shells, giving a lot of build potential and replayability for the game.”
    • “Idea 1: each shell has unique skills and playstyle so that you would have a ton of replayability and options to choose from - caveat: half the skills are either annoyingly bugged, genuinely unplayable kind of bugged, or are literally completely nullified by half of the boss roster.”
    • “Ng+ is badly designed, it doesn't give any sort of bonus in terms of resources and replayability. It's literally just the same game over again; the glimps are too scarce. I should not have to run the whole game 3 times to use each of the shells. By then they become uninteresting. The gold is too scarce: it takes like 60k gold to max a weapon. In my full playthrough, I collected everything and did everything and I only got enough to get 1 max weapon and 1 max sidearm. The lunge is also an issue: enemies will 360 1 shot you, but bosses hit like pillows and are very telegraphed.”
    • “Overall replayability on future NG+ cycles is hampered by cost of upgrades and respecs.”
  • emotional

    25 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
100% positive mentions, 0% neutral mentions, 0% negative mentions

The emotional experience of the game is divisive, with some players feeling a deep sense of attachment and perseverance reminiscent of classic souls-likes, while others find it frustratingly difficult, janky, and emotionally draining. Though the story and characters can be moving, many users express heartbreak and disappointment due to relentless challenge, bugs, and enemy mechanics that hinder enjoyment rather than foster rewarding immersion. Overall, the game evokes intense emotional responses but often leans toward frustration over fulfillment.

    • “A souls-like hasn't made me feel this way about it since the first time I discovered Dark Souls.”
    • “That being said, the stories themselves for the shells endeared those shells to me, and made me feel attached to them as characters.”
    • “Honestly this is the first time I have ever felt like I needed to leave a review. I love this game but it really is too difficult. This is coming from an avid souls enjoyer. There is a fine line for these games to feel rewarding and fun without being too easy, but this game is just heartbreakingly difficult. I feel no joy when finally beating that boss I was stuck on. Every enemy in this game will never give you a safe opportunity to attack; be prepared to always trade or the game will force you to parry. Most enemies will kill you in 1 or 2 hits regardless of night or day mode. The boss designs have combo chains that never end. Not to mention a bug where Magdalena, the Lady of the Woods, will summon her minions at half health; she will try to do her usual charge attack but she gets stuck on her minions who hold her until eventually she pushes past and the game catches up delivering an instant hit to you. Then there's also that Shepheard Jesus—that design was just painful, no fun in that whatsoever. Turning into a sheep. Fine, I can deal with that, but spamming it every second as part of his kit whilst sheep have the damage to insta-kill no matter what is absurd. Just simple enemies across the world are too strong. It promotes running past instead of taking your time to explore and I personally hate that. All in all, this game really has the potential to be amazing but even for a souls fan like me, a game is a game to be fun, and the enemies in this game really felt like they were taking that away. Therefore, I have to leave this game. As much of a shame as it is, I can't have fun in this game with enemies and mechanics like those. To anyone who is thinking about this game, honestly go for it if you want something so challenging it's kinda painful. But if you like souls games for that rewarding feeling and the ability to immerse yourself in the lore, then I can't recommend this right now as much as I wish I could. Anyway, that's all. Peace.”
  • character development

    24 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
50% positive mentions, 37% neutral mentions, 13% negative mentions

Character development in the game is notably light in narrative depth and dialogue, with most emphasis placed on strong character and world design, which many users praise for its distinct, visually striking, and well-realized aesthetics. While the character designs, including bosses and shells, are widely acclaimed for enhancing gameplay excitement, the story and leveling systems are considered lacking or forgettable by some. Overall, character development is more visual and thematic than narrative-driven, contributing to the game's unique identity and engaging atmosphere despite limited plot complexity.

    • “If you're looking for a deep narrative, it isn't here, but there's a lot of great worldbuilding through the environment, character designs, item descriptions, and notes found during exploration.”
    • “The world and character designs have a distinct identity that helps the game stand out from other soulslikes that I have played.”
    • “Not to mention the character designs for the shells are extremely good in my opinion, so unlocking a new shell always felt exciting and special.”
    • “- There doesn't seem to be any visual cohesion with the monster or character design, or any decent world building to explain why that lack of cohesion might exist.”
    • “I also think a lot of the boss character designs are super basic and boring as well.”
    • “Very, very boring character development and levelling system.”
  • monetization

    7 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
14% positive mentions, 0% neutral mentions, 86% negative mentions

The game stands out for its lack of microtransactions, ads, or in-game stores, offering a monetization model free from typical cash grab tactics. Players appreciate that the developers focused on delivering quality gameplay without relying on aggressive monetization strategies.

    • “Every class feels unique and worth playing, there are no microtransactions, no store, no ads; you just start the game and have amazing soulslike fun.”
    • “And for some small annoyances at the top of my head, apart from the game being a cash grab.”
    • “I hesitate to call this game a cash grab souls clone because you can tell a decent amount of effort went into this in some respects.”
    • “Literally nothing about this game says AAA, it feels so AAA, but like...in a good way, it's like what you would expect a AAA game to be like if the devs weren't greedy and actually put the money towards making a good game instead of just something acceptable as a quick cash grab.”
