832,803 unique video games, and counting

Counted across 20 stores and catalogues, deduplicated by GameBrain’s clustering engine and recounted after every catalogue update. Last count: .

How we count

Cite as: There are 832,803 unique video games as of October 25, 2026, according to the GameBrain Video Game Census (https://gamebrain.co/how-many-video-games-are-there).

1,254,155 store listings. 832,803 unique games.

Every store lists the same game again under its own name, ID and edition. GameBrain’s clustering engine merges those listings — by store IDs, normalised titles, developers and publishers — into one entry per game. The number above is what is left after that merge: not app IDs, not SKUs, not DLC, just games. That deduplication is the same machinery behind the GameBrain API.

How many games are on each store?

One game can be on several stores, so these rows overlap and add up to more than the total. itch.io is the largest single catalogue we track with 384,438 games; only 4.4% of them are also on Steam.

How many games are on Steam?

We count 189,107 unique games with a Steam store page. SteamDB, the authority on Steam alone, reports a higher figure because it counts Steam app IDs — including DLC, soundtracks, demos, software and delisted apps — while this census counts games only, once each, even when the same game has several app IDs or is also sold elsewhere.

What would it cost to buy every game?

$1,025,856

That is the sum of the lowest US price we hold for each of the 147,404 games with a known price. 91,173 games (11%) are free-to-play. The rest have no price on record — most browser games, retro titles and delisted games are not sold anywhere.

How we count

  • What counts as a game. One entry per game after deduplication across stores. DLC, soundtracks, demos, betas and pre-release builds are excluded; editions of the same game are merged.
  • Where the records come from. 20 stores and catalogues we crawl ourselves, listed above. Not covered directly: GOG and the Nintendo eShop — Switch titles reach the census through IGDB, OpenCritic and cross-platform store listings, GOG-only releases do not.
  • How listings become games. The clustering engine merges records that share a store ID, or a normalised title together with a developer or publisher. 1,254,155 listings currently collapse into 832,803 games.
  • Release years. A game’s year is the earliest release date on record; 742,978 games have one. Placeholder dates (before 1950 or far in the future) are ignored, and 5,727 announced games with a future date are left out of the chart.
  • Prices. Only US-dollar store prices above $0 and below $500 enter the sum, and only the lowest per game. Free-to-play is the store’s own free-to-play flag.
  • Freshness. Recounted after every catalogue update (at least every 12 hours) and served from the same database as the rest of GameBrain — the number on this page is the number in the search index.

Frequently asked questions

As of October 25, 2026 there are 832,803 unique video games in the GameBrain Video Game Census. That is what remains after deduplicating 1,254,155 store listings across 20 stores and catalogues — the same game sold on several stores counts once, and DLC, demos and soundtracks are not counted at all.

215,847 games are playable on PC (391,842 on Windows, 86,788 on Mac OS, 69,593 on Linux). PC is the platform with the most releases; browser games (179,120) and mobile games are counted under their own platforms.

189,107 unique games have a Steam store page in our data. SteamDB counts Steam app IDs, which include DLC, soundtracks, demos, software and delisted apps, so its number is higher; this census counts games only, once each.

87,530 games were released in 2025, and the record year is 2021 with 88,752 releases. Half of all games ever released came out in 2021 or later.

Counting current and past generations together: 27,786 on PlayStation, 29,442 on Xbox, 13,237 on Nintendo Switch. Console counts overlap heavily because most console games ship on more than one system, and many are also on PC.

We crawl 20 stores and catalogues, then merge listings that share a store ID or a normalised title with the same developer or publisher into one game. Release years use the earliest date on record, prices use the lowest US-dollar price per game, and free-to-play is the store’s own flag. The full method is described above, and the raw numbers are available as JSON.
