Tombwater

Tombwater is very good at mixing two very different inspirations into a coherent experience. Bloodborne, moved into two dimensions, supplies the core combat mechanics, the feeling of eerie transformation, the magic system, and the fire. The Wild West brings in the characters, the dusty town, and the taciturn main character. Anyone who loves both will have a lot of fun exploring this world, discovering its past, conquering its many challenges, and developing their combat abilities. It helps that players have the option to make the game easier in the Settings menu once they start their adventure. Tombwater can be frustrating at times, but its core combination of ideas is very good. Review key provided by the publisher.

  • The in-game map is widely criticized for being vague, sparse, and difficult to navigate, which can cause confusion and frustration during exploration.

  • Bugs and occasional crashes along with some inconsistent design choices like difficulty scaling and balancing issues affect the overall polish.
  • gameplay
    36 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay is generally praised for its tight, engaging, and challenging combat that blends Souls-like mechanics with influences from Bloodborne and classic Zelda, offering depth through varied builds and strategic enemy encounters. While some find late-game power scaling reduces challenge and note minor issues like backtracking or unpolished elements, overall the gameplay is celebrated for its atmosphere, fluidity, and compelling design.

    • “The gameplay is solid and the mechanics of how the gun works makes the gameplay deeper than the alternative ammo drops by a large metric.”
    • “Bosses are a lot of fun and many of them will force you to use the game's mechanics to beat them.”
    • “A lot of fun, fast paced gameplay.”
    • “The game showcases your typical souls gameplay but not the difficulty (at least later in the game).”
    • “Gameplay involves a bit of unnecessary backtracking because of this.”
    • “It's not perfect, there are some mechanics that could function better, but I haven't encountered anything game breaking.”
  • story
    27 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story blends a unique mix of wild west and eldritch horror themes with metroidvania and souls-like elements, offering an intriguing yet straightforward narrative conveyed through atmospheric visual storytelling and player-driven dialogue. While generally praised for its engaging world, memorable characters, and well-balanced exposition, some find it predictable or lacking deep innovation, though overall it maintains strong player interest and a satisfying sense of exploration. Accessibility options and natural in-game guidance further enhance the story experience without overshadowing gameplay.

    • “It mixes visual and story themes of western and eldritch stories with a big explorable world and souls-like combat in a really good way!”
    • “The lovecraftian western aesthetic (and the suitably disturbing story accompanying it) held my interest for the entire duration and didn't overstay its welcome.”
    • “Instead of overwrought exposition, the game communicates its tension through player-directed dialogue and visual storytelling.”
    • “This had the side effect of not knowing where to go for plot reasons, which then had the side effect of being supremely overleveled for the last stretch of the game.”
    • “I certainly hope that there's content added later on that gives a little more story about these people.”
    • “-- story is unoriginal and unsoulslike”
  • music
    26 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's music is widely praised for its atmospheric, eerie, and fitting soundtrack that enhances the immersive weird west setting. Many find the score excellent and impactful, complementing the art and gameplay to create a cohesive and engaging experience. While a few mention a lack of standout tracks, overall the music is considered a strong highlight.

    • “The music... oh my god, the music goes so hard!”
    • “I got so lost in the music that the moments where the game takes it away feel very striking and tense.”
    • “But more than that, the music absolutely nails the eerie atmosphere.”
  • graphics
    19 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Tombwater's pixel art graphics blend a nostalgic, SNES-era aesthetic with a unique Lovecraftian western theme, creating a visually striking and quietly unsettling atmosphere. While the style may not appeal to everyone, most users praise its effective tone, immersive design, and how well it complements the gameplay and thematic elements. Overall, the graphics are regarded as a strong and fitting aspect of the game despite some stylistic contrasts.

    • “Tombwater is a pixel art souls-like that mixes the eldritch horror of Bloodborne with a western aesthetic.”
    • “The overall tone and atmosphere are top notch despite obvious graphical limitations.”
    • “The progression system is fun, and the exploration has me hooked—I feel shockingly well immersed for a pixelated art-style game (which is also gorgeous in its own right).”
    • “The cartoony western-themed Zelda graphics trying to be Bloodborne-style cosmic horror don't always click, and the sound design is either forlorn or playful, but not especially spooky.”
    • “The art style isn't really my cup of tea but I still enjoyed it.”
    • “Somewhat nostalgic of Game Boy Color's Zelda games with its gameplay and boss fights, it tries to reminisce Bloodborne's dark, mysterious, gritty, and occultic aesthetic and ambiance with Lovecraftian eldritch horror, but it doesn't fully succeed.”
  • atmosphere
    12 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The atmosphere is widely praised for its coherence, combining beautiful art, evocative music, and a well-crafted tone that enhances the game's eerie and immersive world. Despite some graphical limitations, it effectively supports the gameplay with a mix of cozy and challenging elements, making it one of the game's standout features.

    • “The combat and movement feel amazing; there is tons of variability in builds, weapons, and lots of secrets to uncover. I love the atmosphere, the world, and the art is beautiful.”
    • “I really enjoyed the game—the perfect mix of punishing Bloodborne-style combat, Metroidvania exploration, and a creepy eldritch wild west atmosphere.”
    • “Excellent atmosphere and sound/music design with cozy but challenging gameplay.”
  • stability
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game runs smoothly on the Steam Deck without any adjustments, but some users experience occasional bugs and stability issues that affect gameplay quality.

    • “Runs great on Steam Deck without any tinkering, as one would expect.”
    • “As much as I love the game, it is somewhat buggy at times.”
    • “Buggy and plays like garbage”
  • optimization
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game offers deep and rewarding optimization options that expand combat possibilities, and it performs well across devices, including the Steam Deck OLED.

    • “Every tiny secret you find has a reward at the end of it, and your options for combat and optimization expand geometrically as a result.”
    • “For those wondering about performance — I played this on a Steam Deck OLED, and it ran great.”
  • monetization
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Users criticize the game's monetization as a lazy cash grab, feeling it undermines what could have been a promising spiritual sequel or a quality 2D experience.

    • “This wasn't a misunderstanding by a small team with good intents, this is likely a lazy cash grab.”
    • “Which sucks because this could have been the spiritual Yarntown sequel or 2D Bloodborne we always wanted, but it's clearly a cash grab.”
  • humor
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor arises mainly from the game's monster AI, which is somewhat unintelligent and can lead to unintentional and sometimes hilarious situations.
