    102 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Jump King Quest effectively merges the original's challenging, precision-based jumping mechanics with deep, souls-like combat and RPG progression, creating a uniquely demanding yet rewarding gameplay experience. While praised for its polished combat, high skill ceiling, and engaging difficulty, some frustration arises from punishing mechanics like the drop-down system and vague RPG elements. Overall, it offers a fresh, addictive blend of platforming and combat that appeals to fans of both Jump King and soulslike games, though newcomers should expect a steep learning curve.

    • “The game has some teeth clenching moments, but the whole movement jumping mechanic mixed with RPG elements inspired by Dark Souls is pretty fun and actually pretty engaging.”
    • “As a sequel, Jump King Quest inherits this core design while layering in RPG progression systems and souls-like combat mechanics, greatly expanding the game’s overall content.”
    • “The combination of platforming, combat, exploration, and light RPG mechanics was very enjoyable and the difficulty level kept the game very engaging the whole way through.”
    • “Edit: made it to the underwater sector of the game, first no healing at all meaning if you got there without full bar of healing you need to do that flawlessly and that requires god-like skills. The sector has a lot of scuffed jumps and introduces a new mechanic that should've been introduced in the beginning but alright. Sector contains a hand-like enemy which makes an already miserable sector even worse, and the more you progress in that sector, more enemies of this kind appear ruining your game. So going back to the point of healing you will end up with a tiny part of HP and no healing so you have to make it without a single mistake that leads to a platform full of knights that deal lots of damage and you have to beat them as well with no way of restoring your health so you end in a borderline-impossible sector.”
    • “The jumping mechanic is extremely difficult to get used to and I spent 1.6 hours jumping around the same 2 different areas of the game until I couldn't take it anymore.”
    • “This mechanic should be reworked since it is only frustrating, nothing more.”
  • humor
    39 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game is widely praised for being absurd, hilarious, and cleverly woven into the dialogue, character interactions, and gameplay moments, especially in cooperative play where shared misfortunes spark laughter. Its comedic style balances frustration with fun, mixing silly, meme-like elements with a lighthearted tone that prevents the game’s challenging mechanics from feeling too punishing. Although some players find the humor-related stat system confusing, the overall comedic writing, quirky references, and humorous design choices make the game both entertaining and memorable.

    • “Hysterical, absurdly funny, somewhat complex and can make you rage but with laughter.”
    • “The dialogue and writing is funny and the game doesn't take itself seriously at all.”
    • “Especially funny when you get frustrated after missing the same jump for the 20th time and your friend that got it in his first try falls into the floor beneath you with a loud splat.”
  • graphics
    38 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics feature a unique and richly atmospheric art style that blends gritty, grimdark, and quirky elements, transitioning from pixel art to a 3D-esque look. While many praise its distinct visuals and thematic cohesion, some users find the new 3D style less appealing or occasionally unpolished, with occasional difficulty distinguishing playable elements. Overall, the art style and visuals are viewed as a strong, defining aspect that enhances the game's mood and experience despite minor graphical rough edges.

    • “The art style is so unique, the music and ambiance are just as spectacular as the original.”
    • “Great game design, boss battles, fantastic art style and charming animations!”
    • “Nexile has made the giant leap from purely 2D pixel art to a more 3D-esque landscape that depicts gloomy and eerie lands, giving the world a considerably different and atmospheric look compared to the original.”
    • “The new 3D art style is ugly and the 2D art was much better.”
    • “Though one of my biggest concerns going into this game was that the new graphics would make it more difficult to tell what the player can visibly land on as opposed to what is just scenery or part of the background, with how crucial it is to have reliable visual feedback when assessing where you can and can’t jump in a game with the accuracy that JK often demands its players.”
    • “I love the theme and art style but I wish it could be smoothed over somewhat.”
  • story
    35 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story of Jump King Quest is praised for its unique blend of poetic, humorous, and grimdark fantasy elements, effectively building on the original while introducing RPG progression and souls-like combat. It offers a memorable narrative experience that complements its challenging gameplay and distinctive art style, making it both a continuation and a fresh, standalone adventure. Many players appreciate the story’s depth, character building, and engaging dialogue, enhancing the game's overall impact.

    • “Jump King Quest feels like a true, standalone continuation of the original.”
    • “Jump King Quest is painful, poetic, and unforgettable.”
    • “I have had a ton of fun with the story/dialogue, character building, exploration, and bosses.”
  • optimization
    13 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's optimization is mixed, with generally stable performance and minimal bugs offline but noticeable issues in online multiplayer, including lag and occasional freezing. Performance tends to degrade over longer sessions and can be problematic on mid-tier hardware, prompting calls for improved optimization to enhance the overall experience.

    • “I've also personally never had any issues with the netcode; the performance is stable and there are no disconnect issues.”
    • “There's a few performance issues in multiplayer here and there, notably freezing, but it honestly isn't too bad.”
    • “Almost perfect; there are some bugs and performance issues but aside from that, the game has incredible art direction and unique gameplay.”
    • “In online play, there seem to be some performance issues for the player who joins.”
    • “I've heard performance issues are apparent on mid-tier hardware, especially when lots of enemies are on screen, so hopefully that can be improved.”
    • “Sadly, the online performance, while starting off fairly decent in the first hour or so, gradually degrades into a rather unpleasant lag fest the longer you play.”
  • music
    13 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game is widely praised for being catchy, atmospheric, and complementing its unique art style and dark fantasy theme. It enhances the overall vibe and emotional tone, with some noting its blend of goofy and serious elements. While generally stellar, a few mention the absence of background music in parts, which creates a focused, solitary ambiance.

    • “The art style is so unique, the music and ambiance is just as spectacular as the original.”
    • “The music and art direction is great, the punishing difficulty really makes all progress feel earned and exciting.”
    • “The core mechanics and gameplay loop shine, perfectly complementing its half-goofy, half-serious art style, music, and humor that make this game truly exceptional.”
    • “The absence of background music, as noted in reviews, creates a solitary ambiance, allowing players to focus entirely on the task at hand.”
    • “Nexile, if you're reading this, please drop the soundtrack for JKQ too.”
    • “It’s more like learning to play a musical instrument.”
  • stability
    9 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's stability is marred by frequent multiplayer connection issues, lag, and bugs that cause frustrating disconnections and inconsistent gameplay. While the core game shows promise, especially outside multiplayer, the current co-op experience is unstable and often clunky, making it unreliable in its early access state.

    • “Game with co-op system that barely works, servers are an absolute disgrace to the co-op title with constant disconnecting and failures to connect to a friend. Invites work only under certain conditions. Boss fights are janky, movement is slow and buggy, and moves are inconsistent, sometimes requiring you to hold the button twice for the same amount of time to get different results. Fighting feels comparable to a game made in Unity by a 7th grader.”
    • “The lag gets so bad that you'll frequently encounter screen freezes of almost a full second.”
    • “And as other people have mentioned, the multiplayer aspects of the game can be buggy and frustrating, particularly hordes of enemies instantly respawning right on top of you moments after you've killed them.”
  • atmosphere
    7 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The atmosphere is richly crafted with a soulful, vibrant, and thoughtfully designed art style that blends Metroidvania and Soulslike influences. Areas feel unique and purposeful, enhanced by detailed visuals, immersive sound design, and significant RPG elements, creating a gloomy yet engaging environment. Fans appreciate the careful attention to detail and meaningful references that deepen the world-building experience.

    • “The art style adds a soulful, rich, and vibrant atmosphere.”
    • “Wonderful attention to detail in all aspects, wonderful atmosphere that achieves the purpose of each area, and for those who have played the original there are plenty of exciting parallels in reference to the world explored in the first game.”
    • “The pixel art style, while minimalist, effectively conveys the atmosphere of each area.”
  • grinding
    5 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Grinding in the game is made more manageable and enjoyable with new features like a flute that eases armor farming and clearer attribute systems. However, the grind can still feel tedious and frustrating, especially when precise jumping and meticulous enemy clearing are required, which might deter players who dislike grind-heavy gameplay. Some suggest improvements like auto-replenishing heals to reduce the grind's intensity further.

    • “In a game where falling means having to jump back up (including boss-runs), it can be very tedious to have to meticulously take out every enemy on the way there, or jump up with high precision very fast to skip them.”
    • “However, that's coming from someone who has a general distaste towards the grindy aspect of RPGs (like Elden Ring) and yet I have over 200 hours in Jump King and have gotten every single achievement in that game. In my unbiased opinion, if the roles were reversed, where an RPG player goes into this Jump King/RPG game, they might feel a little frustrated.”
    • “Also, I think your heals should be auto replenished at your servant like Estus flasks in addition to farming them.”
  • replayability
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game offers high replayability due to its variety of weapons and armor across multiple classes. However, its multiplayer mode currently limits community growth, which may affect long-term engagement until improvements are made.

    • “It has a lot of weapons and armors for many classes, making it very replayable.”
  • monetization
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's monetization is widely regarded as poor, with limited commercial value and minimal revenue potential.

  • emotional
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The emotional aspect is somewhat mixed, with players enjoying the unique and fun combat that takes center stage, while feeling the platforming lacks the same impact and excitement as in the previous game.

  • character development
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The character development is visually impressive, featuring unique claymation-style designs that enhance the overall experience. However, specific details on character growth or depth are not highlighted.
