    98 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay of "Jump King Quest" is a blend of challenging platforming and souls-like combat mechanics, creating a unique and addictive experience that rewards mastery and perseverance. While the jumping mechanics are praised for their depth and skill ceiling, some players find certain aspects, like the drop-down mechanic and enemy density, frustratingly punishing. Overall, the game offers a compelling mix of exploration, combat, and humor, though it may require patience and a willingness to navigate its steep learning curve.

    • “The combination of platforming, combat, exploration, and light RPG mechanics was very enjoyable, and the difficulty level kept the game very engaging the whole way through.”
    • “Through some arcane alchemy, this game manages to make some of the most obtuse, frustrating, and disproportionately punishing, yet utterly consistent jumping and combat mechanics feel addictive and rewarding as hell.”
    • “The gameplay is similar to Jump King, but with the added difficulty of enemies and bosses constantly attacking you and sending you falling to your doom.”
    • “The jumping mechanic is extremely difficult to get used to, and I spent 1.6 hours jumping around the same two different areas of the game until I couldn't take it anymore.”
    • “Edit: made it to the underwater sector of the game, first no healing at all meaning if you got there without a full bar of healing you need to do that flawlessly, and that requires god-like skills. The sector has a lot of scuffed jumps and introduces a new mechanic that should've been introduced in the beginning. The sector contains a hand-like enemy which makes an already miserable sector even worse, and the more you progress in that sector, the more enemies of this kind appear, ruining your game. So going back to the point of healing, you will end up with a tiny part of HP and no healing, so you have to make it without a single mistake that leads to a platform full of knights that deal lots of damage, and you have to beat them as well with no way of restoring your health, so you end up in a borderline-impossible sector.”
    • “This game fails to explain what any of the mechanics do with stats/leveling; there is no clear information on what the party system does, even though a large portion of people were probably excited for a multiplayer co-op.”
  • graphics
    36 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics of the game have received mixed reviews, with many praising the unique art style and atmospheric visuals that blend a gritty, dark fantasy theme with vibrant elements. However, some players express a desire for smoother graphics and toggle options for different visual styles, while others find the transition from pixel art to 3D to be jarring or less appealing. Overall, the visuals are described as both beautiful and flawed, contributing to a rich gaming experience despite some minor bugs and inconsistencies.

    • “The art style is so unique, the music and ambiance is just as spectacular as the original.”
    • “The art style is crazy, the combat is tight, fun jumping mechanic, classic vibe, a fun time.”
    • “Nexile has also made the giant leap from a purely 2D pixel art style over to a more 3D-esque landscape that depicts the gloomy and eerie lands, giving the world of JKQ a considerably different look when compared to its original.”
    • “What a weirdly self-contradictory experience... hell, even the visuals are somehow simultaneously hideous and oddly beautiful!”
    • “Though one of my biggest concerns going into this game was that the new graphics would make it more difficult to tell what the player can visibly land on as opposed to what is just scenery or part of the background, with how crucial it is to have reliable visual feedback when assessing where you can and can’t jump in a game with the accuracy that JK often demands its players.”
    • “The new 3D art style is ugly and the 2D art was much better.”
  • humor
    36 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game is widely praised for its absurdity and charm, often eliciting laughter through frustrating yet hilarious gameplay moments, such as friends falling or failing together. The dialogue and writing are noted for being funny and memorable, contributing to a lighthearted atmosphere that complements the challenging mechanics. Overall, the game's blend of silly humor, clever references, and chaotic multiplayer interactions creates a uniquely entertaining experience that keeps players engaged and amused.

    • “Hysterical, absurdly funny, somewhat complex and can make you rage but with laughter.”
    • “The dialogue and writing is funny and the game doesn't take itself seriously at all.”
    • “But, even though it has many purposefully frustrating game mechanics, there is a strong thread of humor woven throughout all aspects of the game that really makes it hard to stay mad at it for long.”
  • story
    34 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story of "Jump King Quest" is described as a painful yet poetic continuation of the original game, blending humor and a unique narrative style that enhances the overall experience. Players appreciate its memorable characters and engaging dialogue, which contribute to a rich, gritty fantasy atmosphere. The game successfully combines elements of platforming and combat, making the storytelling integral to gameplay, while also appealing to both casual and dedicated gamers.

    • “Overall, the gameplay is super fun and challenging, the art is awesome, the story is hilarious, and the game is big and getting bigger, for sure worth a playthrough and when it's finished it might truly be a masterpiece.”
    • “I have had a ton of fun with the story/dialogue, character building, exploration, and bosses.”
    • “Jump King: Quest is painful, poetic, and unforgettable.”
    • “Not to mention the stats are not explained in any way other than through storytelling.”
    • “Of all the things going into Jump King Quest though, the inclusion of a whole new multiplayer back when this game was first announced received a mixture of excitement to the new co-op and online possibilities as well as genuine fear from those who prefer their singleplayer experiences as far as how this would impact the overall enjoyment of Jump King’s tried-and-tested platforming alongside the inclusion of combat mechanics.”
  • music
    12 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game has received widespread acclaim for its catchy, joyful, and unique qualities, effectively complementing the art style and overall atmosphere. Reviewers appreciate the blend of gritty themes with a whimsical touch, noting that the soundtrack enhances the gameplay experience, even as some mention the absence of background music can create a solitary ambiance. Overall, the music is described as stellar, with many calling for the release of the soundtrack due to its exceptional quality.

    • “The music is really catchy, joyful, and goofy.”
    • “Stellar music, art style, and vibes.”
    • “The music and art direction is great; the punishing difficulty really makes all progress feel earned and exciting.”
    • “The absence of background music, as noted in reviews, creates a solitary ambiance, allowing players to focus entirely on the task at hand.”
  • optimization
    12 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Overall, the game's optimization has received mixed feedback, with users reporting occasional bugs and performance issues, particularly in multiplayer modes and on mid-tier hardware. While some players experience stable performance initially, others note significant lag and stuttering, especially during intense gameplay scenarios. There is a strong desire among players for improvements in optimization to enhance their overall experience.

    • “I've also personally never had any issues with the netcode; the performance is stable and there are no disconnect issues.”
    • “Almost perfect; there are some bugs and performance issues, but that aside, the game has incredible art direction and unique gameplay.”
    • “I genuinely want to support this game, so if the optimization improves, I’ll gladly re-purchase it, update my review to positive, and provide a more in-depth analysis.”
    • “In online play, there seem to be some performance issues for the player who joins.”
    • “I've heard performance issues are apparent on mid-tier hardware, so hopefully that can be improved. It sounds especially poor when lots of enemies are on screen.”
    • “Sadly, I do have to report that the online performance, while starting off fairly decent in the first hour or so, gradually degrades into a rather unpleasant lagfest the longer you play it.”
  • stability
    9 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's stability is heavily criticized, particularly regarding its co-op system, which suffers from frequent disconnects, connection failures, and lag that leads to significant screen freezes. While some players acknowledge that the game shows promise despite its bugs, the overall experience is marred by janky mechanics and frustrating multiplayer issues, making it advisable to wait for a more polished version before diving in.

    • “Game with co-op system that barely works; servers are an absolute disgrace to the co-op title. Constant disconnecting and failures to connect to a friend, invites work under certain conditions, boss fights are janky, movement is slow and buggy, and moves are more often than not RNG. Holding the button twice for the same amount of time gives different results. Fighting is comparable to a game made in Unity by a 7th grader.”
    • “The lag gets so bad that you'll frequently encounter screen freezes of almost a full second.”
    • “Its a truly buggy and awful experience.”
  • atmosphere
    7 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The atmosphere of the game is characterized by a soulful and vibrant art style that enhances the overall experience, blending elements of metroidvanias and soulslikes. Players appreciate the meticulous attention to detail, unique animations, and sound design, which collectively create a rich and immersive environment. The game successfully balances familiarity with innovation, offering both new areas and nostalgic references for fans of the original.

    • “The art style adds a soulful, rich, and vibrant atmosphere.”
    • “Wonderful attention to detail in all aspects, wonderful atmosphere that achieves the purpose of each area, and for those who have played the original, there are plenty of exciting parallels in reference to the world explored in the first game.”
    • “It's a very Souls-like feeling in atmosphere and upgrade elements, which I actually like.”
    • “The pixel art style, while minimalist, effectively conveys the atmosphere of each area.”
  • grinding
    5 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Players appreciate the new updates that enhance the game's visuals and combat, making grinding for armor easier and more enjoyable. However, some express frustration with the grindy elements, particularly in relation to boss runs and enemy encounters, which can feel tedious and require precision. Overall, while the game appeals to those who typically dislike grinding, it may still pose challenges for players accustomed to more streamlined RPG experiences.

    • “However, that's coming from someone who has a general distaste towards the grindy aspect of RPGs (like Elden Ring), and yet I have over 200 hours in Jump King and have gotten every single achievement in that game. In my unbiased opinion, if the rolls were reversed, where an RPG player goes into this Jump King/RPG game, they might feel a little frustrated.”
    • “In a game where falling means having to jump back up (including boss runs), it can be very tedious to have to meticulously take out every enemy on the way there, or jump up with high precision very fast to skip them.”
    • “I think your heals should be auto replenished at your servant like Estus flasks in addition to farming them.”
  • replayability
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game offers significant replayability due to its diverse selection of weapons and armor for various classes. Additionally, the potential for a larger multiplayer community in the future could enhance the game's longevity and replay value.

    • “It has a lot of weapons and armors for many classes, making it very replayable.”
    • “Once multiplayer is more playable, this game will definitely grow a huge community. It's unfortunate, but I can't blame people for not playing right now.”
  • emotional
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

While the game features unique and enjoyable combat, it places greater emphasis on this aspect over the emotional depth found in its predecessor, resulting in a less impactful experience overall. The challenging platforming elements, though present, do not evoke the same level of emotional engagement.

  • character development
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

While the level design and claymation-like character designs receive high praise, there is no specific mention of character development in the reviews, suggesting that this aspect may not be a focal point of the game.
