  • Indemon Tales offers a charming blend of engaging storytelling, unique characters, and a satisfying gameplay loop reminiscent of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon and Stardew Valley, making it a delightful experience for fans of dungeon crawlers.
  • The game features a robust character building system with diverse equipment crafting options, allowing players to create unique builds and strategies that enhance combat and exploration.
  • Despite being a solo developer project, the game is well-optimized, visually appealing, and regularly updated, showcasing the developer's dedication and passion for the game.
  • The game suffers from a steep difficulty curve and can feel grindy, especially when it comes to leveling up and managing inventory space, which may frustrate some players.
  • Certain gameplay mechanics, such as the lack of a map in dungeons and the cumbersome inventory management system, detract from the overall experience and can lead to moments of confusion.
  • While the story and characters are well-written, the gameplay can become repetitive, and some players may find the combat mechanics lacking in depth compared to more polished titles.

    46 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story of Indemon Tales is engaging and well-written, featuring a blend of humor and serious moments that keep players invested in the characters and their development. While the main character lacks depth, the supporting cast is memorable, and the plot intertwines themes of camaraderie and intrigue within a demon kingdom. Overall, players appreciate the simplicity and charm of the narrative, alongside its captivating art style and challenging gameplay.

    • “Make no mistake, Indemon Tales has a really good story and the characters are well-written, making the story enjoyable.”
    • “The story progresses as you complete and unlock more dungeons, with a background tale of intrigue amongst the demon leadership wonderfully intertwining with the camaraderie you make with the lovable kobold Gwen and your strange boss of a bird demon Ikkri (who I think is cute).”
    • “This game has a wonderful story that held my interest from beginning to end!”
    • “The story is something that can be followed, or not.”
    • “Technically you play as generic human #45768454 who has absolutely no dialogue or personality and barely any story relevance to such a degree that I can't help but wonder if it's a deliberate jab at other games that do this.”
    • “There doesn't seem to be much, if any, post-main story dialogue from characters or any noticeable changes.”
  • gameplay
    25 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay of Indemon Tales combines elements from Pokémon Mystery Dungeon and the dungeon mechanics of Stardew Valley, creating a simple yet engaging loop centered around dungeon crawling and character progression. While some players find the gameplay repetitive and janky, many appreciate its depth, strategic elements, and the rewarding nature of combat and loot collection. Overall, the game offers a fun experience with a heartwarming story, though it may require some adjustment to fully enjoy its mechanics.

    • “The best way to describe Indemon Tales is that it has the gameplay loop of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon (clear dungeon sometimes with a boss to progress the story loop) with the dungeon gameplay being a significantly expanded version of the Stardew Valley dungeons/mines.”
    • “An enjoyable core gameplay loop centering around dungeon crawling, a surprisingly engaging story, along with lovable characters paired with neat pixel art and portraits made the game a surprising hit for me personally.”
    • “The gameplay loop is rewarding, and you're always making progress to getting stronger stats and gear!”
    • “Unlike a book or even a cartoon, the player is not passive and the medium requires their participation; the gameplay, above all else, has to be worth it, and playing Indemon Tales is a practice in tedium and redundancy.”
    • “I honestly had to have an internal debate on where to begin with the gameplay issues, as they're not so linear that you could just go from addressing one to another without crossing into several other issues on the way, but I'll start with something basic as an outline: progression.”
    • “The gameplay loop can get a little repetitive, but you can quickly switch strategies without too much issue.”
  • grinding
    8 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Players find the grinding aspect of the game to be tedious and time-consuming, particularly when aiming for higher difficulty levels and better equipment. The incremental benefits from leveling and skill upgrades are often perceived as minimal, leading to a sense of wasted effort. Additionally, the talent point system exacerbates the grind, requiring multiple levels to unlock meaningful upgrades, which contributes to an overall feeling of excessive grinding.

    • “If you want to play on the higher difficulty (called heroic when the map is open), then you will be grinding for equipment and levels.”
    • “Overall, since minor additional stats don't present an easily identifiable change with each increase, it feels like you're wasting time by grinding for skills.”
    • “The talent point system is kind of annoying because you gain one per level, but later talents cost multiple points, so you might need to gain 5 levels to earn a single talent, and this game unfortunately feels very grindy.”
  • music
    6 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game has received high praise for being enjoyable, well-timed to the story, and overall fantastic, with users highlighting the developer's impressive work as a one-man team. The soundtrack is described as a standout feature, adding to the game's appeal with its funky and engaging tunes.

    • “The music in the game was also fantastic and well timed to events in the story.”
    • “Music can get very funky, very enjoyable!”
    • “And the music???”
    • “Not to mention, the soundtrack was a banger too.”
  • emotional
    4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game effectively balances its dark premise of abduction with a heartwarming narrative centered on friendship and redemption, evoking a range of emotions from laughter to tears. Players feel deeply engaged with the story and characters, including the enemies, culminating in an emotional experience by the final act. While the gameplay mechanics may not stand out on their own, they complement the touching storyline, enhancing the overall emotional impact.

    • “Despite its dark premise of abduction by monsters, the game unfolds into a heartwarming narrative of friendship and redemption in the monster kingdom of Tarborea.”
    • “Every interaction made me feel something and kept me engaged with the story, having me laughing and rooting for the crew, even the enemy at times.”
    • “I even got a little emotional by the final act.”
  • optimization
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game is praised for its solid optimization, delivering smooth performance and gameplay. Players note that the improvements in gear, such as a new pickaxe, may not significantly impact performance unless the upgrades are substantial.

    • “I must mention as well that the game is well optimized and runs smooth.”
    • “Overall good performance and gameplay.”
    • “This means that it's practically worthless to get a new pickaxe unless the increase in power is so dramatic that the difference in performance is immediately noticeable.”
    • “The optimization in this game feels lacking, making it hard to justify upgrades when the benefits are minimal.”
    • “I often find myself questioning whether the time spent optimizing my gear is worth the marginal gains.”
  • humor
