Gary Grigsby's War in the East 2

It goes without saying that WitE2 will appeal to a niche audience and I suspect you already know if that includes you. This series is geared towards people who want to simulate, as close as possible, the titanic struggle along the Eastern Front. You’re not going to like this game if the idea of setting reinforcement and supply priorities for units, seems over the top. With that said, the game is accessible. However, there’s no getting around the fact that you need to dedicate some serious time to unlock WitE2’s full potential and that’s going to turn some people off. But, if you’re willing to put in the effort, WitE2 is unparalleled in the strategic experience that it can offer. Put simply, it is a masterpiece of game design and execution.

  • Steep learning curve requiring significant time investment and extensive use of manuals and external tutorials to understand the complex systems.

19% positive mentions, 75% neutral mentions, 6% negative mentions

The gameplay is deeply detailed and historically immersive, offering complex mechanics that simulate operational and logistical challenges on the Eastern Front, appealing to players who enjoy learning and mastering intricate systems. While the intuitive interface allows beginners to start easily, mastering the game requires extensive time, patience, and supplemental resources like tutorials and videos due to a steep learning curve and some inconsistencies in mechanics. Frequent updates and active developer support continue to refine gameplay, making it rewarding but demanding for committed strategy enthusiasts.

    • “It's so intuitive that anyone can pick it up, but the game mechanics are so detailed that you could spend hundreds of hours playing (like I have) and still be learning how it all works together.”
    • “From logistics and supply chains to combat mechanics and weather effects, every element is deeply researched and thoughtfully implemented.”
    • “Long-term matches against human opponents provide some of the most intense, rewarding, and challenging gameplay I've encountered.”
    • “It's a very detailed and in many ways advanced game, yet fails at basic mechanics which should really take precedence.”
    • “The game does not save gameplay or balance preferences between saves - so use extreme caution when reloading games at previous junctures.”
    • “All the supposed detailed combat mechanics, unit equipment and stats is nothing but smoke and mirrors, with very little substance implemented behind the scenes.”

The graphics are functional and well-suited to the game's style, emphasizing clarity and historic detail rather than visual complexity. While not visually stunning, the map and interface have improved over time, effectively supporting gameplay and immersion. Ultimately, the visuals serve the game's scale and depth, aligning with its focus on systems rather than flashy graphics.

    • “The historic detail, playability, historical units, and graphic map details.”
    • “Each new generation of Gary Grigsby games has improved significantly on the last, featuring better user interfaces, easier access to important information, and better visuals.”
    • “Not a graphical beauty but that's not the point with this one.”
    • “The game is selling for 62 pounds or 80 dollars, some people say it is too expensive and the graphics are not good.”
    • “While the graphics are not overly complex, they are well-executed, particularly in the hex-and-counter system, and the cutscenes effectively set the mood for the impending war.”
  • story

The story aspect is hindered by slow-paced air mission setup and limited dynamic ground war effects, leading to a less engaging narrative. While the mission editor adds replayability, repetitive mission types and ineffective aircraft roles diminish the overall impact on the game's storytelling.

    • “And the mission editor essentially makes the game infinitely playable.”
    • “I assume to win will be a different story.”
    • “It's a similar story if you're playing on the defensive.”
    • “Very often I found air groups unable to perform a specific mission type, and spent an inordinate amount of time trying to correct it.”
    • “Aircraft being largely useless; even with a great system for commanding and customizing them, many mission types are ineffective.”
    • “Carrying out bombing missions, CAS, and air superiority doesn't have enough effect to be useful.”
