  • Unique and fun blend of tower defense and bullet hell/shoot 'em up mechanics creating engaging and challenging gameplay.
  • Charming and cute art style with well-done animations and a pleasant soundtrack, enhancing overall game appeal.
  • Good progression system with upgrades for towers and character, supported by a simple, sweet story and enjoyable characters.
  • Controls are clunky and not customizable, with no mouse support making keyboard play awkward; controller highly recommended.
  • Game is relatively short with a limited number of levels and upgrades, leading to grinding and some players feeling the game is unfinished or lacks content.
  • Some balance and technical issues, including unclear hitboxes, frustrating difficulty spikes, awkward tower placement UI, and occasional unfair enemy spawn timings.
  • story
    14 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story is generally described as simple, short, and somewhat clichéd, but charming and fitting for the game’s cute art style and gameplay. While not deeply complex or richly detailed, it effectively supports character relationships and themes of friendship and family, adding to the overall enjoyable experience. Some players wished for a more spaced-out or extended narrative to enhance emotional moments.

    • “The art is very cute, the gameplay is complex and chaotic beyond what a friendly art style would hint at, and as cliche as the story is, I really enjoy the characters and their relationships.”
    • “If you want a unique and fun tower defense game that has bullet-hell gameplay, cute monsters, a story about friendship and family, some really lovely artwork, and a pretty good soundtrack, then Witch Explorer might be the game for you.”
    • “Well, I played the prologue and was really looking forward to seeing the continuation from the last one and so far it's really fun. Big fan of the story and characters and I hope this hidden gem of a game has installments in the future, there's a lot of stuff to build on.”
    • “The only real negative I had for the game is that the story is so-so and you realistically will upgrade everything way before you finish the game, even if you are not replaying missions.”
    • “The story is short and sweet, but don't expect a complex and detailed story with big twists and turns; it's simple, and that's fine for my taste.”
    • “You could have spaced out the ending a bit more story-wise; the sad moment is ripped away too soon.”
  • gameplay
    13 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay combines tower defense with light bullet-hell shoot 'em up mechanics, offering a fun and engaging challenge that is easy to pick up but has notable depth. Despite some clunky, gamepad-centric controls and occasional issues like large hit boxes, the unique lunchbox mechanic adds a forgiving strategic layer. Overall, the gameplay is chaotic yet enjoyable, appealing to those who appreciate a blend of genres with charming characters and art.

    • “The gameplay is a mix between tower defense and shoot 'em up, offering a challenging yet easy-to-get-into experience with different types of enemies and the main character able to fight.”
    • “The simple tower mechanics combined with light bullet hell elements make for a fun time that doesn't overstay its welcome, despite some issues like large hit boxes and awkward buttons.”
    • “The lunchbox mechanic adds a forgiving layer to gameplay, allowing strategic use of boosts that can make the game easier while maintaining engaging tower defense and bullet-hell elements.”
    • “The gamepad-centric controls make gameplay sometimes clunky; for example, when placing towers, you have to cycle through different towers with the shoulder buttons.”
    • “It has some issues such as a large hitbox and awkward buttons, but the simple tower mechanics combined with some light bullet hell elements make for a fun time that doesn't overstay its welcome.”
    • “The lunchbox mechanic makes the game more forgiving by allowing free usage on the first level you enter, which can be exploited to make the game a lot easier by quitting and re-entering levels to get continuous free lunchbox boosts.”
