About

Terraformental is a single player survival survival game. It was developed by Shadowsand and was released on January 28, 2026. It received overwhelmingly positive reviews from players.

Try to survive and perhaps eventually even tame an unknown planet in this incremental semi-idle game. Inspired by Increlution, though if you've played that game, please be aware that the looping mechanic in this doesn't start unless/until you reach a certain point. So you do have to do some planning to make sure you survive long enough first time around. This project is currently in early access…

  • Unique and innovative incremental game combining time loops, storytelling, and resource management with puzzle elements.
  • Engaging and well-written mystery and sci-fi narrative that unfolds gradually, encouraging exploration and strategic planning.
  • Meaningful progression with actions becoming faster over repeated loops, combined actions that reduce tedium, and a strong sense of player agency.
  • The game can feel slow and repetitive due to long real-time waits for many actions and mandatory repeated loops, which may challenge players’ patience.
  • User interface is basic and visually unappealing, with grey and cluttered text, lacking immersive visuals or customizable quality-of-life features.
  • Some organizational and usability issues arise from action grouping, lack of automation or queuing for unavailable actions, and occasional gameplay pacing imbalances leading to tedious grinding.
  • story
    79 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's story is highly praised for its well-written, unique, and immersive sci-fi narrative that unfolds gradually through player agency and time-loop mechanics. While some find the pacing slow and best suited as a complement to the puzzle gameplay, most reviewers appreciate the engaging mystery, rich lore, and seamless integration of story with incremental and puzzle elements. The ongoing updates and strong community anticipation highlight the story's potential and appeal within its genre.

    • “Absolutely brilliant looping incremental with unfolding mystery/sci-fi story, developing shortcuts and puzzle elements.”
    • “The prose and the story-telling really does nudge this into the higher end of visual novel territory and wasn't what I was expecting from an incremental at all.”
    • “The story unfolds slowly, and not necessarily in order.”
    • “It helps bring the story forward to relevant points (although, there is inconsistency between the rate some longer tasks are sped up).”
    • “The story hook is really strong and reaching new things and finding out new information was always rewarding enough that I was working for it.”
  • gameplay
    53 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay is praised for its clever use of time loop and incremental mechanics that create an addictive and engaging puzzle loop, emphasizing progression even after failures. Players appreciate the blend of resource management, exploration, and narrative integration, with quality-of-life features reducing tedium during repetitive tasks. Though some find pacing slow due to waiting times, the overall design is considered innovative, immersive, and satisfying within the genre.

    • “The game mechanics make you feel progress even when trying out something that happens to fail.”
    • “The core gameplay loop involves trying different pathing and routing while managing resources to reach new destinations without running out.”
    • “The complexity emerging from finely balanced game mechanics makes this game outstanding.”
    • “If this is ever a mechanic later, then it's clearly way too late in the game, as I needed it 10 hours ago, frankly.”
    • “The gameplay itself is dull, just a bunch of waiting around for the most part.”
    • “Worse are the games that intentionally make mechanics worse to make you spend more time on them.”
  • grinding
    9 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Grinding in the game is generally well-managed with route optimizations and combined tasks to reduce tedium, though some repetitive actions and preparation for certain missions can feel tedious. Players appreciate the smooth progression and engaging themes but note that later stages and repeated loops may lead to a sense of grind, with a desire for more customizable or combined actions to alleviate this.

    • “For example, you cannot queue "pick up fuel cell" and "load fuel cell into vehicle" (unless you already have a fuel cell), which feels tedious to me.”
    • “The later parts of the game get a little tedious, especially with some of the trips to Strabo, really takes a while to prep and travel it.”
    • “I love the mystery solving aspects, though I do wish we had more combined actions, or the option to create our own, because certain parts are really grindy.”
  • music
    7 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music is generally praised for being fantastic, ambient, and effectively enhancing the unique atmosphere of each area, especially fitting the sci-fi, terraforming setting. While some find it a bit repetitive, it contributes well to immersion and complements the game's incremental and puzzle progression.

    • “The music is wonderful and ambient, and there are no set-in-stone ways to accomplish your goals.”
    • “Even as an early access title, it's one of the best there is for the very particular niche genre it's in: you've got a very satisfying sort of incremental progression (the more you do a thing, the faster you get at it), and more direct puzzle-progression (particular tasks you only have to do once ever, some tasks combine when you get good enough at them), and even more direct permanent upgrades (stuff and knowledge you find that persists through loops), delivered as a sort of text adventure with a good ambient soundtrack.”
    • “Music can get a bit repetitive.”
    • “Music, while basic, really helped each area feel unique.”
    • “The space-sounding music helped visualize the planet as gray and barren, but the variety in environmental descriptions suggested more colors, which wasn't reflected in the music until hours into the game.”
  • graphics
    7 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game features minimal graphics, primarily text-based with a few simple icons, focusing on imagination rather than visual appeal. The interface is functional but can feel cluttered and basic, resembling default designs, with no images or detailed maps to enhance immersion. Overall, the simple visuals are appropriate for its indie, low-budget nature and emphasize storytelling over flashy graphics.

    • “I am well aware that good graphics aren't the point, it's an indie game with a low budget. The buttons and options the game provides take up the entire screen, and the writing clearly intends for you to use your imagination given how it details what each room looks like.”
    • “Great little game, no flashy graphics but cool gameplay and story.”
    • “The visuals aren't interesting.”
    • “Speaking of graphics, the text can get a bit cluttered and therefore tedious to read despite the information conveyed being interesting and immersive.”
    • “No graphics or pictures in it. I wish there were pictures at destinations and a detailed colored map to immerse you in where you are. The interface looks like a Godot default almost.”
  • optimization
    6 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Users find the game's optimization aspect engaging when involving clever resource management, routing, and timing, though it can become tedious with repetitive tasks and unimportant diversions. The developer shows promise in refining these sharp edges by streamlining actions and improving task flow. However, some technical issues like lag and stuttering currently detract from the overall experience.

    • “This game is at its best when you have to solve resource optimization puzzles with clever routing and timing, and at its worst when your resource situation is sustainable and the game is sending you back and forth on several-minutes diversions with lots of writing that doesn't say much of importance.”
    • “Loop-based time travel-esque mystery unfolding, time management, planning, routing, optimization, you name it.”
    • “This can be a game about incremental progress, or it can be a game about strategy and optimization, and you can flit effortlessly between the two approaches as and when you feel like it.”
    • “And that's not even getting into the random lag spikes and stuttering!”
    • “Along with trying out different optimization methods and builds.”
    • “I think the particularly sharp edges are likely to be sanded down before release; the developer has so far displayed great attention to detail in presenting route optimizations and combining repetitive actions into 'meta-tasks' to make them less tedious.”
  • replayability
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game offers notable replayability by encouraging players to revisit areas and discover more efficient strategies, enhancing engagement through continual optimization.

  • stability
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game initially suffered from numerous bugs and incomplete content compared to the itch version, but significant updates over the first month greatly improved its stability.

  • monetization
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game features a fair monetization approach with no microtransactions or timegating, enhancing the experience alongside a well-developed story.

    • “An incremental game with no microtransactions, timegating, and actually decent story?”
