About

Terraformental is a single player survival management game with mystery and science fiction themes. It was developed by Shadowsand and was released on January 28, 2026. It received overwhelmingly positive reviews from players.

Try to survive and perhaps eventually even tame an unknown planet in this incremental semi-idle game. Inspired by Increlution, though if you've played that game, please be aware that the looping mechanic in this doesn't start unless/until you reach a certain point. So you do have to do some planning to make sure you survive long enough first time around. This project is currently in early access…

  • Unique and well-executed time loop incremental game blending resource management, exploration, and mystery with meaningful and impactful decisions.
  • Smooth progression with persistent upgrades making actions faster over loops, combined with rich story, clever puzzles, and strong narrative that keeps players engaged.
  • User-friendly interface with many quality of life features like combined actions to reduce repetitive clicking, well-designed mechanics avoiding traditional idle pitfalls, and great ambient music enhancing immersion.
  • Repetitive gameplay elements and unavoidable long waiting times for actions such as traveling, leading to occasional tedium despite progression speedups.
  • Basic and unappealing graphics limited to simple text and UI, which some players find detracts from immersion and sense of place.
  • Slow update schedule and some UI inconveniences, such as inconsistent action ordering and lack of advanced automation or macro features, which can make repeat loops feel grindy.
  • story
    97 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story is widely praised for its engaging and immersive time-loop narrative that unfolds gradually, blending seamlessly with incremental and puzzle mechanics. Players appreciate the well-written, intriguing sci-fi plot that rewards exploration and planning, creating a compelling progression beyond simple resource management. Though still incomplete, the story's depth and integration with gameplay strongly distinguish the game within the incremental genre.

    • “Loved the feeling of progression as the story slowly unfolds, and how each successive loop moved you faster and farther.”
    • “I was particularly impressed with the story and writing, and the subtle changes and shortcuts that evolve as you go through several runs.”
    • “The story telling is amazing and super immersive for such a simple design and the pacing complements it perfectly; would 100% recommend at least giving the demo a try and buying the full game if you enjoy it.”
    • “It helps bring the story forward to relevant points (although there is inconsistency between the rate some longer tasks are sped up).”
    • “The story unfolds slowly, and not necessarily in order.”
    • “There is a lot of potential for growth with this story/narrative as your player character traverses an unknown world.”
  • gameplay
    60 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay is praised for its innovative time-loop and incremental mechanics that blend resource management, exploration, and puzzle-solving in a unique, engaging loop. Players appreciate the accelerating action completion, persistent progression, and smart design that make even failures feel like progress, supported by a compelling narrative and smooth pacing. While some find long wait times less engaging, overall the gameplay is considered immersive, addictive, and thoughtfully balanced, standing out as a fresh take within its genre.

    • “I have really enjoyed playing this game and find the mechanic of looping through and gradually uncovering the story as you learn more each time around to be interesting!”
    • “Top tier narrative/progression idle game - I adore the way the mechanics and challenges keep changing for every new area, and the nonlinearity and openness of the design.”
    • “Wrapped around this delightfully brain-tickly mechanic is a strong narrative mystery, secrets, and areas to unlock across repeated runs as you backtrack with items and equipment you find further out, like someone implemented a Metroidvania as a visual novel.”
    • “The gameplay itself is dull, just a bunch of waiting around for the most part.”
    • “Worse are the games that intentionally make mechanics worse to make you spend more time on them.”
    • “Games like this that use part-idle mechanics have an important reason to waste your time.”
  • grinding
    12 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Grinding becomes more noticeable and tedious in the later stages of the game, particularly with repetitive wait times and travel preparations. However, the developers have implemented route optimizations and combined tasks to reduce monotony, though some players still wish for more streamlined or customizable actions. Overall, while certain parts feel grindy, the progression and storytelling help maintain engagement.

    • “Later in the game though, a few of the longer wait times need to be repeated multiple times, and that can get quite tedious.”
    • “By the end though, it does feel pretty grindy.”
    • “For example, you cannot queue 'pick up fuel cell' and 'load fuel cell into vehicle' (unless you already have a fuel cell), which feels tedious to me.”
  • graphics
    11 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game features no traditional graphics, relying entirely on text with minimal icon use, which fits its text-based design. While some find the visuals uninteresting and the text sometimes cluttered, the game encourages players to use their imagination, though the interface could feel basic or lacking in immersive elements like images or maps. Overall, the absence of graphics is noted but not seen as detrimental given the game's focus and indie nature.

    • “I am well aware that good graphics aren't the point; it's an indie game with a low budget. The buttons and options the game provides take up the entire screen, and the writing clearly intends for you to use your imagination given how it details what each room looks like.”
    • “Great little game, no flashy graphics but cool gameplay and story.”
    • “But remember, it's text-based; don't expect any graphics apart from like 10 icons or something.”
    • “First off, graphics are non-existent.”
    • “The visuals aren't interesting.”
    • “No graphics or pictures in it.”
  • music
    11 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game is generally praised for its ambient and atmospheric qualities, effectively setting the tone and enhancing immersion. While some find it repetitive and suggest playing their own music alongside it, many appreciate how it complements the game's unique, text-driven experience and helps differentiate areas. Overall, the soundtrack contributes positively to the mood and pacing without becoming irritating.

    • “But the music in this game is memorable, sets the tone for the setting, and keeps me wanting to keep playing. It isn't something that makes me irritated to hear on repeat loop after loop.”
    • “Music, while basic, really helped each area feel unique.”
    • “The music is wonderful and ambient, and there are no set-in-stone ways to accomplish your goals.”
    • “If you insist on playing this, I'd advise you to play your own music in the background (I've been using the Vanguard Galaxy one instead) because of the two tracks, the outside one will drill your skull (bip bip bip bip bip bip bip bop bop bop bop bop bop tururururu tururururu *kill me please*).”
    • “Music can get a bit repetitive (but might just be me, being slow).”
    • “There is some background music but GUI-wise it's all text and one very simple map.”
  • optimization
    7 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game excels in resource optimization puzzles, offering engaging and varied challenges even with repetitive tasks, enhanced by clever routing and timing mechanics. While some segments can feel drawn out or affected by lag and occasional stuttering, ongoing development shows promise in streamlining these rough edges to improve overall flow and reduce tedium. Players can enjoy a flexible experience balancing incremental progress with strategic optimization.

    • “This game is at its best when you have to solve resource optimization puzzles with clever routing and timing.”
    • “Loop-based time travel-esque mystery unfolding, time management, planning, routing, optimization, you name it.”
    • “This can be a game about incremental progress, or it can be a game about strategy and optimization, and you can flit effortlessly between the two approaches as and when you feel like it.”
    • “And that's not even getting into the random lag spikes and stuttering!”
    • “I think the particularly sharp edges are likely to be sanded down before release. The developer so far has displayed great attention to detail in presenting you with route optimizations and combining repetitive actions into 'meta-tasks' to make them less tedious.”
    • “Along with trying out different optimization methods and builds.”
  • humor
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game is perceived as misguided or poorly executed, leaving players feeling disappointed rather than amused. It seems the comedic elements either missed the mark or were overly reliant on timing that didn't resonate with the audience.

  • replayability
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game offers a unique replayability through revisiting locations to discover more efficient strategies, encouraging players to refine their approach and engage repeatedly.

  • stability
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game initially suffered from significant bugs and missing content compared to the itch version, but frequent updates from the developer over a month greatly improved its stability.

  • monetization
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game features a fair monetization approach with no microtransactions or timegating, enhancing the experience alongside a compelling story.

    • “An incremental game with no microtransactions, timegating, and actually a decent story.”
