“The gameplay is incredibly fun and varied, with a multitude of ways to complete objectives depending on the character you choose.”
“Streets of Rogue offers a unique blend of emergent gameplay, allowing for countless strategies and interactions that keep each run fresh and exciting.”
“The game mechanics are smooth and intuitive, providing a satisfying gameplay loop that encourages creativity and experimentation.”
“The game feels difficult at first and did not tell you much about the mechanics, particularly about how saving the game works.”
“The learning curve is so high that even after 100 hours, I would still say I kind of suck at this, and almost every new mechanic I discover results in the loss of a run.”
“To me, the runs are almost always the same with only a handful of different quests that you'll be forced to do over and over; the different classes do lend to some different gameplay, but the differences are very minor.”

The story in "Streets of Rogue" is minimal and often considered nonsensical, primarily revolving around the player's quest to overthrow a corrupt mayor. While the game lacks a deep narrative, it compensates with a variety of character-specific quests and a humorous tone that enhances the gameplay experience. Players appreciate the freedom to approach missions in numerous ways, making each run feel unique despite the repetitive nature of the mission types.
“The character diversity and quests are all fun and challenging.”
“The sheer depth of options available to solve procedurally generated missions is staggering.”
“With a multitude of character unlocks, traits, missions, weapons, items and custom characters, every run gives you something new to try.”
“The story is practically non-existent (the mayor is bad, stop him) and the missions themselves are generic and can become repetitive (fetch quest, save person, kill people, press buttons).”
“The missions themselves are repetitive, largely boiling down to: neutralize random person x, acquire item from person/thing, rescue prisoners, etc. but, in almost a hitman kind of way, that's not a bad thing due to the sheer amount of options you have to complete your objectives.”
“From my experience, the missions are limited and repetitive, and there aren't many stages in the game currently.”

“But there's a few glitches that can ruin a run; some of the mechanics that should work on your side don't and instead hinder you, and overall, it just needs massive polishing.”

“It's 'roguelike' elements are laughable at best and tedious at worst, with multiple playthroughs feeling near-identical due to the copy/paste formula that serves as the backbone for this entire experience.”

Character development in the game is a mixed bag; while the character designer offers a variety of customization options, including starting items and traits, the actual progression and uniqueness of classes feel mundane and repetitive. Streets of Rogue isn’t the Dungeons and Dragons-themed brawler I was expecting but after punching three hoodlums through a brick wall I’m willing to forgive its misleading title.

Streets of Rogue isn’t the cheapest of rogue-lites available on the eShop, but years of developmental evolution in Early Access have resulted in the final product making it to Nintendo Switch, and while we do feel the asking price is a tad high, the amount of content you get far surpasses what you’re probably expecting. RPGs are at their best when they give you a world where you can be anyone and do anything - Skyrim has built its legacy on that very concept - so if you want to be a werewolf, or a scientist, or a bartender, then this is the game for you.
