Project Songbird

Project Songbird will divide gamers, but it’s worth playing. The story premise is well-worn, but it works, and Dakota is a cool character to work with. The narrative goes some weird places, even if the final third doesn’t deliver on the initial promise. The atmosphere is great, especially when players get to run through Dakota's record collection as she delivers her critical evaluation. I wish the experience leaned more on these elements, including the nature sound recording and the photos. The nighttime puzzle sequences and the creature avoidance fail to be as engaging. These sequences, apart from a few jump scares, also don’t deliver on the promise of some solid horror. Project Songbird is worth playing for the story and the vinyl records, as long as players are willing to overlook some clunky gameplay elements. Review key provided by the developer.

  • The game features a deeply emotional, heartfelt, and personal narrative that resonates strongly with themes of grief, trauma, creative burnout, and mental health.
  • Exceptional voice acting and sound design contribute to a cinematic atmosphere that effectively builds tension without relying heavily on jump scares.
  • Visually stunning with strong art direction and immersive environments; the gameplay integrates exploration, puzzles, and survival horror elements cohesively, making for a memorable and engaging experience.
  • Combat mechanics are clunky, frustrating, and poorly balanced, detracting from the overall experience; scarce resources for weapons and awkward blocking mechanics lead many players to preferring stealth or avoidance instead.
  • The meta-narrative and developer self-insert elements, especially in the late game, break immersion and disrupt the flow of Dakota’s story, leaving some players feeling disconnected.
  • Some puzzles are overly complex, tedious, or poorly designed and combined with lack of clear objectives or vague journal entries, can cause confusion and break pacing.

    138 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story of the game is widely praised for its emotional depth, heartfelt exploration of themes like grief, creative burnout, and mental health, and its strong voice acting and atmospheric storytelling. While some find the narrative occasionally drawn out or disrupted by meta elements involving the creator, most appreciate its relatable, personal nature and slow-building tension over cheap scares. Overall, it is regarded as a compelling, impactful, and memorable experience for fans of story-driven psychological horror.

    • “Honestly, this game is stunning, the mechanics are polished, the optimisation is flawless, the voice acting is incredible, the acting in general in the cinematic cutscenes is absolute cinema, and the story is heartfelt and raw with lots of emphasis on messages regarding mental health that will resonate with so many people.”
    • “Project Songbird is a thoroughly enjoyable narrative 'horror' game, with great voice acting, writing and an enjoyable linear story that doesn't focus on cheap jump scares but rather slow tension and exploration of trauma, guilt, pressure and an inner look at the responsibility felt by creatives and artists and how their work is received as well.”
    • “The game really exceeded my expectations, it was intense, the story went deep and the visuals and sound design really pulled me into the universe.”
    • “The plot was so long and drawn out, and there was no direction in the game.”
    • “Sadly, it was just clunky, with a frustrating gameplay loop, and a story that fell apart after the third act started.”
    • “The creator self-inserted parts that break the fourth wall but just tear you from the protagonist's story.”
  • gameplay
    49 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay features a blend of puzzle-solving, stealth, and light combat mechanics that many find engaging and well-balanced, though some criticize it for clunkiness and repetitiveness. While the mechanics support the story’s psychological themes effectively, combat and certain gameplay loops are noted as underdeveloped or frustrating by some players. Overall, gameplay is generally praised for its challenge and atmosphere, even if not universally polished.

    • “There were moments of genuine fear and surprise, the stealth and puzzle elements were challenging without being so difficult it became frustrating, and overall the gameplay felt well balanced and the story was well paced.”
    • “I thought the mechanics such as the listening, and the combat were well thought out to appeal to any player—whether they want to fight, hide, or flee, making the game accessible to everyone.”
    • “The gameplay loop mainly involves solving puzzles to advance through the linear environments, with sneaking, managing limited resources, and solving puzzles that effectively reinforce the game's stressful tone.”
    • “Sadly, it was just clunky, with a frustrating gameplay loop, and a story that fell apart after the third act started.”
    • “Core mechanics — this might be one of the worst survival horror implementations I’ve seen.”
    • “Either way, the core gameplay loop just doesn’t work.”
  • music
    49 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game is widely praised for its atmospheric and emotional impact, blending ambient textures and well-placed musical swells that enhance tension without overpowering the experience. Some minor technical issues with sound propagation were noted, but overall, the music contributes significantly to the game's strong atmosphere and emotional resonance.

    • “The soundtrack is gorgeous and voice acting is well-done.”
    • “Project Songbird is a beautifully made, emotionally resonant indie that blends music, cinematic framing, and slow-burn horror into something affecting.”

    • “Cons: can't adjust the voice separately from the music.”
    • “The sound design is where it lands hardest: quiet ambient textures and well-placed musical swells that heighten tension without overpowering the moment.”
  • graphics
    30 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's graphics are widely praised for their beautiful, atmospheric art style and clear, immersive visuals that effectively enhance the creepy mood and storytelling. While some minor low-resolution assets appear occasionally, the overall visual design is detailed, cinematic, and low-impact on system performance, contributing significantly to the engaging and intense experience.

    • “I am very big on visuals in games and it truly is an absolutely beautiful game to play while creating that creepy atmosphere as well.”
    • “The graphics are amazing and extremely low-impact on your system even at ultra settings (running Asus TUF B650-E WiFi, Ryzen 7 7800X3D, Radeon RX 7800 XT) even while streaming.”
    • “The visuals are absolutely breathtaking.”
    • “The graphics in Project Songbird are quite similar to those in the crowded indie horror market.”
    • “While the design isn't top-tier, the visuals are clear and fully legible.”
    • “While the graphics are typical for the genre and the ending drags a bit, the 5.5 hours spent exploring Dakota's mind are well worth it.”
  • atmosphere
    24 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's atmosphere is widely praised for its beautiful, immersive, and carefully crafted environments that evoke a sincere, emotional, and eerie experience. It effectively balances a slow-burning, psychological horror vibe with strong narrative elements, ambient audio, and minimal jump scares, creating tension and engagement without relying on constant scares. Overall, the atmosphere stands out as a unique, haunting, and integral part of the game's identity.

    • “It feels sincere, emotional, and thoughtfully told, while the outstanding authorial visual style gives the whole project a unique identity and atmosphere.”
    • “The tension building and the atmosphere are amazing, the music fits the scenes perfectly and the designs are beautiful!”
    • “The dream-like sequences - the office, backstage areas, Finn’s house - all possess a liminal, uncanny atmosphere, and perfectly represent Dakota’s heightened thoughts, fears, and suppressed memories.”
    • “Atmosphere — it’s there, it’s decent… but it never actually gets under your skin.”
    • “I put the horror in quotation marks because it does have horror and those moments but it's a psychological horror built around atmosphere, environment, and audio with the odd enemy here and there to physically manifest that terror.”
    • “The game leans hard into intimate, slow-burn atmosphere—part personal trauma, part eerie isolation.”

    • “You'll need a second life for grinding.”
    • “The puzzles aren't simply hard—they are often tedious and nonsensical, and the amount of map space that has empty rooms with no items and no story is a bit absurd.”
    • “Combat is clunky enough that I wish it wasn't even an option.”
  • replayability
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game offers limited replayability, with some collectibles to revisit, a new game+ mode, and modifier options like a cheat menu, but lacks features such as chapter selection. While replay value isn’t extensive, it is considered reasonable for the genre and price point.

    • “Overall, it doesn't have a lot of replayability. There are some collectibles you can go back for, but no chapter select feature. It does have a New Game+ mode and some modifiers like a cheat menu, but given the price, that's fair and not something usually expected in this genre for extensive replay value.”

The character development in the game is considered lacking, as players found the story familiar and felt it did not effectively build attachment to key characters like Dakota, Rob, and Finn.

The humor in the game elicited some light laughter, indicating it is mildly amusing but not consistently hilarious.
