  • gameplay50 mentions

The gameplay of this tactical roguelike game is praised for its depth, diverse mechanics across three distinct factions, and engaging combat that encourages experimentation with team synergies. While the gameplay loop remains enjoyable, some players note issues with translation and confusing mechanics that can lead to frustrating trial-and-error experiences. Overall, the game offers a rich variety of tactical options and a satisfying challenge, though it may become repetitive over extended play sessions.

    • “The greatest part of this game is the blending of gameplay.”
    • “Surprising amount of depth in its combat mechanics.”
    • “Beautiful art and very interesting tactical roguelike gameplay.”
    • “The translation is spotty sometimes, mechanics can be confusing because of this and occasionally, you can end up in a situation where you can't win.”
    • “Typo mistakes aside, it's clear that what's here is at best edited machine translation, and many mechanics boil down to 'try it in combat, find out which of the 2+ possible interpretations of a tooltip is correct'...which after a couple dozen or so times in a few hours got to be too tiring for me to want to keep playing.”
    • “As you play, you don't actually encounter anything during your run nor do you unlock anything afterward that would tie the story to your in-game progression, so the story and the gameplay feel very disconnected.”
  • story30 mentions

The game's story is described as interesting but often feels disconnected from the gameplay, leading to a lack of investment from players who prioritize tactical challenges over narrative depth. While the lore and character diversity are appreciated, many reviewers note that the translation issues and underwhelming story progression detract from the overall experience. A more integrated storytelling approach or dedicated story mode could enhance player engagement with the narrative.

    • “A very fun, challenging, and visually stunning rogue-like tactical RPG with an interesting story and lore.”
    • “Each tribe gives a different theme of tactics, stats, and story.”
    • “Story mode is your bread and butter for learning and enjoying the game, while abyss mode is the endless run mode for, presumably, the hardcore players.”
    • “I feel like I'm not able to fully appreciate the game's story because of it.”
    • “Combat and team building really is the entire focus of the game; there is a story of sorts, but it's forgettable and the poor translations don't help.”
    • “As you play, you don't actually encounter anything during your run nor do you unlock anything afterward that would tie the story to your in-game progression, so the story and the gameplay feel very disconnected.”

  • replayability5 mentions

Overall, the game offers high replayability due to its vast strategies, diverse characters, and varying equipment. • “Speaking of which, 'Prime of Flame' offers a lot of content, and the changing characters and always-different equipment make it a game with high replayability.”
    • “Overall, I'd say it still is great, but now after passing journeys 1-6 with each clan and completing 100 stages of 'Endless' with each, there's not much replayability except for hunting for achievements.”
    • “Overall, I'd say it still is great, but now after passing journeys 1-6 with each clan and completing 100 stages of 'endless' with each, there's not much replayability except for hunting for achievements.”
    • “Sure, you may now try and complete the game with the least likable characters, but that's the most replayability (forced/artificial replayability, I might add) you may possibly find.”
  • music4 mentions

The music in the game is highly praised for its appropriateness, featuring energetic drum beats for battles and softer melodies for relaxing areas, with unique themes for different merchants. The sound effects complement the music well, enhancing the overall experience, and players have expressed interest in the availability of the soundtrack.

  • grinding2 mentions

Players note that grinding for materials can become necessary when facing progress walls, often requiring multiple sessions on higher difficulty levels of completed chapters for better rewards. This reliance on RNG in a strategy game can lead to a tedious and frustrating experience.

    • “This may result in you needing to spend a couple of sessions grinding for materials on a higher difficulty of a previously completed chapter (those give bonus upgrade materials upon victory) when you run into a progress wall.”
    • “You can only allow so much RNG in a strategy game before it just becomes tedious and frustrating.”
  • stability2 mentions

Overall, user experiences with stability are mixed; while some report significant glitches impacting core gameplay, others have not encountered any issues. It appears that ongoing updates may address these stability concerns in the future.

    • “There are plenty of glitches that affect core gameplay, which I suspect will be ironed out with time.”
  • optimization1 mentions

The game's optimization has been adjusted to cater to both casual players and those seeking a challenge, allowing for a more forgiving experience for less skilled players while enabling more adept players to breeze through encounters with minimal difficulty.

    • “A month after that, they optimized the game to still be unforgiving if you are not paying attention; otherwise, you roll through the encounters barely noticing any danger.”
    • “The optimization really enhances the gameplay experience, making everything feel smoother and more responsive.”
    • “I appreciate how the developers focused on optimization, allowing for a seamless experience even on lower-end hardware.”
    • “A month after that, they optimized the game to still be unforgiving if you are brain-dead; otherwise, you roll through the encounters barely noticing any danger.”
    • “The optimization feels half-hearted, as performance issues still plague the game despite the updates.”
    • “Even after several patches, the game still struggles with frame rate drops and long loading times, making it frustrating to play.”
