The gameplay of "Legend of Keepers" is characterized by a blend of strategic dungeon management and turn-based combat, offering a unique twist on the roguelike genre. While many players appreciate the humor, art style, and engaging mechanics, the gameplay loop tends to become repetitive and lacks depth over time, leading to a sense of monotony after several hours. Overall, the game is enjoyable for casual play but may not satisfy those seeking a more complex or varied experience.
“The mechanics are great and exciting, the sprites and graphics detailed and well animated, and there is a hilarious sense of humor to the game.”
“Legend of Keepers is a fun roguelike with an engaging gameplay loop and some excellent pixel graphics.”
“It keeps you on your toes, allows for difficulty customization, offers unlockable content, and best of all, extremely fun and addicting gameplay.”
“The problem is the gameplay becomes extremely repetitive even with what the different masters & their exclusive monsters bring to the table, since the enemy variety is good but not that big after playing for a while.”
“The gameplay loop is very repetitive and boring overall.”
“Gameplay is chronically shallow, with neutered collect/upgrade systems, that lack any weight or impact.”

The graphics of the game are characterized by charming pixel art that appeals to fans of retro aesthetics, with many praising the detailed animations and whimsical designs. However, some players feel that the visuals can be too simplistic or outdated, particularly on modern platforms, and express a desire for improved sprite quality. Overall, while the art style is generally well-received, opinions vary on its execution and impact on gameplay.
“The pixel graphics and animations are gorgeous; the monsters are all beautiful and unique, and there are so many options for how to build your monsters and how they play off of each other.”
“Legend of Keepers is a fun roguelike with an engaging gameplay loop and some excellent pixel graphics.”
“The art style is charming and fits the game's whimsical tone perfectly.”
“In addition, the graphics are just ugly.”
“Honestly, this game follows suit with all of this dev's work (there are creative good ideas in all of the works I have played) in that it has interesting ideas and decent concepts, but the gameplay loops with the trashy pixel graphics (just make better sprites, I don't personally mind the older aesthetic but why is it older aesthetic done poorly?) some games of the SNES era still had good sprite work.”
“Horrible graphics.”

The game's story is minimal and often feels underdeveloped, with players noting a lack of engaging narrative or lore to motivate continued play. While the missions introduce some character and humor, they quickly become repetitive and grindy, leading to a sense of disconnection from the overarching plot. Overall, the absence of a compelling story detracts from the game's replayability and emotional investment.
“The plot is actually well written; there's not a ton of it, but there's enough to engross the player.”
“It does not have much story, but the missions are introduced nicely and the keepers all have good characterizations. I would recommend this if you like these types of turn-based games.”
“The features and story about corporate life in the villain world were cool and made a cohesive plot for the game.”
“Most of the time games of this sort, rogue-lites in general, fantasy even more so, rely on a solid story, lore and completion compels to go again and again to see the different aspects of the game, feel the difficulty spike not only because enemies get stronger, but also because there are bigger repercussions for loss. You care about not losing, whereas in this title I just don't really care about the villain and his success.”
“No real story to speak of and it feels like you progress for the sake of progress - you don't really 'keep' anything other than the dungeon master's stats.”
“The events in the game are extremely repetitive with very little changing between missions with the monster and trap selections.”

The game's replayability is a mixed bag, with some players finding it enjoyable and varied due to different heroes and mechanics, while others criticize it for becoming repetitive and lacking depth after the initial playthrough. Many reviews highlight that the game offers reasonable replay value, especially with DLC, but also note that it can quickly lose its appeal due to limited content and strategy diversity. Overall, while some aspects encourage replayability, significant improvements are needed to maintain long-term engagement.
“Honestly, this game is loads of fun with plenty of replay value to it.”
“Great replay value, every game is slightly different.”
“Different heroes have completely different ways to play, which adds some measure of replayability to the game, and then endless and ascension can shake things up even more once you unlock those.”
“I do not see any reason to continue playing, nor do I see any actual replay value unless you'd like to repeat the first half hour of gameplay indefinitely because that's how it is - you literally see the entire game's offerings within the first half hour.”
“Another major critique: the game is short and doesn't have much replay value.”
“Overall though the amount of content and replayability is lacking for the given price.”

The humor in "Legend of Keepers" is widely appreciated for its quirky and darkly comedic take on dungeon management, often flipping traditional RPG roles on their head. Players enjoy the amusing writing and lighthearted tone, though some note that the humor can become repetitive over time, diminishing its impact. Overall, the game successfully blends strategic gameplay with a charming sense of humor, making it a fun experience, especially for those familiar with the genre.
“In this hilariously twisted game, you're not the hero; you're the mastermind behind the dungeon, scheming to stop those do-gooders in their tracks with an array of monsters, traps, and devious strategies.”
“The tone being mostly comedic, like a lighthearted take on dark humor which works well due to decent writing.”
“Also, this is one of those games where the sense of humor really shines and it has made me chuckle quite a few times.”

Overall, while the music enhances the game's experience, it could benefit from more diversity and depth.
“The music and sound effects are also very nice.”
“The game is well put together, with fantastic, highly detailed pixel art and a great soundtrack.”
“I love the ambience, soundtrack and visuals!”
“The OST, however, is a bit lame, albeit fitting the theme.”
“Audio is...okay, with slightly repetitive music and sound effects, but nothing overly annoying.”
“However, I must say, the music is not really entertaining...”

The game is widely criticized for its excessive grinding, with many players finding the repetitive gameplay loop tedious and lacking depth. While some enjoy the grinding process and find it satisfactory, the overall sentiment leans towards frustration, as players often feel that the grind detracts from the enjoyment and variety of the game. Despite offering some initial fun, the experience tends to become monotonous and exhausting over time.
“1) No grinding levels to beat the last boss. 2) You expect at least half of your minions to fail to kill the adventurers, and I like that the goal is to winnow them down rather than just outright beat them.”
“A bit grindy sometimes.”
“You'll need a second life for grinding.”
“The whole experience is nauseatingly repetitive and immutably tedious, never enjoyed, rather endured in the hope it gets better - it doesn't.”
“The idea of grinding the same missions over and over again in order to get a tiny amount of experience for my masters so that I can play the same missions on 'hard' mode isn't appealing at all to me.”
“Extremely tedious game without any kind of depth.”

The game is generally enjoyable and visually appealing, but it suffers from significant stability issues, including frequent freezes during gameplay and setup phases. Many players report game-breaking bugs that hinder progress, and despite running on high RAM, lag persists. Overall, while the game shows potential, its stability concerns remain a major drawback, with little response from developers regarding bug fixes.
“Lots of depth, lots of choice, never enough resources to have everything, reasonably balanced and bug-free.”
“Too many freezes in the middle of adventure runs.”
“Game freezes 50% of the time after setting up your dungeon each time.”
“Fun but has game-breaking issues, and the developers don't seem to react to bug reports anymore, so it will probably stay buggy forever.”

The atmosphere of the game is widely praised for its beautiful pixel art, engaging music, and a mix of chill and fun elements, creating an enjoyable experience. “A pretty chill experience with good atmosphere and nice pixel graphics.”
“The writing is pretty funny overall and loosens up the otherwise dark atmosphere thanks to the sounds, music, and overall look of the game.”
“Presentation: beautiful pixel art and slick UI, nice atmospheric music.”

The monetization strategy of the game has drawn criticism for its reliance on external content unlocks and persistent ads for DLC and other games, which detracts from the overall experience. Players have expressed frustration over the lack of promised free content in exchange for email sign-ups and the predetermined nature of monster training options, leading to a feeling of limited replayability compared to similar titles. Overall, there is a strong desire for improvements in these areas to enhance player engagement.
“The first thing I see when I opened the game is that I have to follow something out of the game to unlock content, along with ads for DLC and other games along the side.”
“The advertising reaches my email, but not the free content promised for giving my email address.”
“I would refund this but I've played past the 2 hours because I was curious about the enchantress. I really do hope the devs improve these aspects of the game to make it infinitely replayable like Darkest Dungeon. They even included Darkest Dungeon in their ads by claiming it was a reverse Darkest Dungeon; they're not wrong, but it's definitely not as fun as Darkest Dungeon.”

Overall, the game's optimization has improved, featuring a cleaner presentation and smoother performance without major issues. However, the gameplay loop still feels lacking, with some items significantly enhancing performance while others have minimal or negative effects.
“Sadly, while it is a little better, the presentation is much cleaner and easier to follow, and more optimized than I remember. However, with more content, the overall gameplay loop is still just not quite there.”
“Performance: no issues.”
“There's a collection of items that's so key and overpowered you can build around it (like shield from attack heroes above 50%, demons drain a proportion of damage they deal to burning targets, and so on), and then there are items that have no or limited impact or straight up worsen your performance.”

Character development in the game is criticized for lacking depth and emotional attachment, as players frequently encounter new teams of minions with unremarkable abilities and designs. While some reviewers appreciate the overall character aesthetics and music, the inability to connect with the characters diminishes the overall experience.
“Although the menu designs are pretty simple, this is a fun game packed with great music and incredible character designs.”
“Although you end up with a new team of minions for each level you attempt, there's so little joy in anything going on here; the abilities aren't flashy, I can't really form an attachment to the character designs, and the sound design failed to provide the much-needed impact - or even a decent tune.”

Legend of Keepers Review (PC)
Legend of Keepers is a good mix of ideas that could use some more variety. For the first 10 to 15 hours it has the pace and content to throw new ideas and new options out. It’s very fun to take down new groups of more powerful heroes and see what’s the best combination of monsters and traps to sap their spirit or to destroy their health points. The game also has plenty of long-term goals. But once I learned more about the monsters and the enemies I found it hard to get excited, even when I got a new powerful creature or when a powerful hero dropped in. Goblinz Studio understands the two genres it is mixing but it should have added a pinch more innovation to make Legend of Keepers into a long-term fun experience.
