  • story118 mentions

The story is heavily influenced by anime high-school tropes, featuring students who engage in secret battles outside of school, blending comedy and serious moments effectively. While some players find the narrative engaging with interesting twists and character development, others criticize it for being predictable, boring, or overly nationalistic. Overall, the story is seen as a decent complement to the gameplay, though opinions vary widely on its quality and impact.

    • “The story is super fun, with lots of comedy and serious moments, as expected of an anime.”
    • “Amazingly, the story makes sense and is very consistent (something very rare in most games).”
    • “This game was pretty unique in a lot of ways, the story was fantastic with lots of interesting twists and turns, the characters were some of my favorites that I'd ever gotten to know in video games.”
    • “The story is awful and weirdly nationalistic, but doesn't get in the way too much, and the equipment system is clunky and makes it difficult to upgrade gear if you've boosted lower level gear, but it's fine.”
    • “There is a story, but it's boring, and gets in the way of actually trying to play the game.”
    • “I just can't bring myself to like the story or characters in this game, and that does break the game for me.”
  • gameplay64 mentions

The gameplay is a mix of solid dungeon crawling mechanics and outdated features that can frustrate players, particularly newcomers to the genre. While some aspects, like the "warning meter" and networked player notes, add depth, many mechanics are poorly explained, leading to confusion and a steep learning curve. Overall, the game offers a challenging experience with beautiful artwork, but its awkward UI and lack of clarity in mechanics detract from the enjoyment.

    • “Solid wizardry-style gameplay, good dungeon design, encounter design, unit and class design.”
    • “The artwork is beautiful and the gameplay is challenging but charismatic.”
    • “Good music, gameplay is strangely addicting.”
    • “This game really feels like a bad RPG Maker style game when it comes to the gameplay and animations.”
    • “A lot of the issue is that many of the mechanics of the game are horribly explained or don't make sense, and the game's version of a guidebook doesn't do a very good job of explaining everything either.”
    • “The most notable possible drawback of this game is that some basic information, e.g. abbreviations for the character classes and the way some game mechanics work, isn't readily explained in the game.”
  • graphics38 mentions

The graphics of the game have received mixed reviews, with some praising the beautiful artwork and character customization options, while others criticize the outdated visuals and lack of diverse environments. Although the game runs at 1080p and 60fps, many players feel that the graphics do not meet the standards expected from a 2017 release, with clunky menus and featureless dungeon designs detracting from the overall experience. Overall, while the artistic style appeals to some, the execution leaves much to be desired.

    • “The artwork is beautiful and the gameplay is challenging but charismatic.”
    • “Nice 1080p graphics and art at 60fps.”
    • “The artwork looks great and that's the only upside.”
    • “Graphics could have been better for a 2017 game.”
    • “The menus are clunky, non-intuitive, and the graphics are a bit old (although I love anime-style).”
    • “It wouldn’t be so bad if each of these dungeons weren’t so featureless, but while the tile-set will vary from dungeon to dungeon, the only sort of props or aesthetic features you will ever run into are walls and doors.”
  • grinding16 mentions

The grinding aspect of the game receives mixed reviews; while some players find it enjoyable and manageable, others criticize the difficulty spikes and cumbersome UI that complicate the grinding process. The game is noted for being fun and accessible for newcomers to dungeon crawlers, but it can become tedious, especially for those who dislike grinding. Overall, it appeals to fans of grinding but may frustrate others due to its design flaws.

    • “Not too hard, not too grindy; dungeons make sense; it's hard to screw up a character—perfect for a baby's first dungeon crawler.”
    • “Insane difficulty spikes late on; not recommended unless you really like grinding.”
    • “The auto-move farming feature is also bad since you cannot do battles automatically (which I believe Stranger of Sword City can't do either, but still can remember the party's last taken action), and the confirm button is mixed with the search button, so when you're holding the confirm button while auto-moving, the auto-move will be canceled.”
    • “In short, it's pretty fun, but definitely has some very tedious factors that drive me crazy.”
  • music14 mentions

The music in the game receives mixed reviews, with some players praising it as fantastic and lovely, while others find it bland and unremarkable. Overall, it seems to enhance the gameplay experience for many, despite some criticisms regarding its effectiveness in certain contexts.

    • “As others have mentioned, the music is fantastic in the game.”
    • “Good music, gameplay is strangely addicting.”
    • “Lovely background music.”
    • “Music - meh”
    • “The music is bland, the gameplay for a first person dungeon crawler has way too many horrible gimmicks and works poorly, multi-class function is broken and no patch will fix it it's busted.”
  • character development11 mentions

Character development in the game is heavily reliant on class-changing mechanics, which are praised for adding depth, particularly for fans of the wizardry series. However, some players feel that overall character development is lacking, especially in comparison to other RPGs, with criticisms aimed at the character designs and the battle system. While a few characters stand out, many players find it difficult to engage with the overall development.

    • “Anyone who is very familiar with the Wizardry series will know that up until the 8th title (and really games like this are styled after the first 5 sans the 4th), class-changing is a core mechanic of the game and adds a lot of depth to the character development.”
    • “Without it, both the combat and the character development become stale very quickly.”
    • “Character development is kind of there for the few that 'matter,' but I still couldn’t really bring myself to actually get into them.”
    • “I am not a big fan of Asian games as they are usually lacking in the RPG systems department with very poor character development and worse itemization.”
  • humor10 mentions

The humor in the game is highlighted by characters like the African-American English teacher, who provides comic relief and engages players with funny and interesting dialogue. While some jokes may not land, the overall narrative offers a humorous experience that rewards players who navigate its complexities. Players have the option to infuse personal creativity and humor into their characters, enhancing the comedic aspect of the game.

    • “For example, you have the African-American English teacher in the school who is always providing comic relief due to cultural reasons, leaving you laughing on the floor.”
    • “So it is up to you whether you want detailed preset art or to add a bit more personal creativity and humor to your game.”
    • “An incoherent UI and story will cause issues for those without a lot of patience, but there is an interesting and funny narrative to reward those who persevere through it.”
    • “You could make a joke that incorrect tool tips are correct for the era they wanted, but it's not funny.”
  • optimization4 mentions

The game's optimization has been criticized for its poor performance, especially given its origins as a 2014 PS Vita title, with many users reporting subpar keyboard controls. While some veteran players believe the game has potential, the overall consensus points to a lack of effective optimization.

    • “The performance is relatively poor considering it was ported from 2014's PS Vita, and the controls when using a keyboard are pretty bad.”
  • atmosphere4 mentions

The game's atmosphere is generally well-received, characterized by its cute visuals and solid artwork, appealing particularly to new players. However, fans of the original titles may struggle to embrace the updated aesthetic. Overall, the writing complements the atmosphere effectively.

    • “Writing isn't bad; the atmosphere and artwork are good.”
    • “The atmosphere is charming and visually appealing, making it enjoyable for new players.”
    • “Even though I can see new players liking the game and its atmosphere (I mean, it sure looks cute and stuff), for those who played the originals, it'll be pretty hard to accept the new look.”

Users find that the game contains several touching moments that evoke strong emotional responses, highlighting its ability to connect with players on a deeper level.

    • “Some parts are touching.”
