I am Setsuna

I am Setsuna is a wonderful tribute to the SNES era. Even with all the familiarity from the older titles that it pays homage to it doesn’t come across as a copy paste and instead is capable of standing on its own even with the heavy nostalgic feel. Graphically and audibly beautiful sounding this RPG is more than worth the time in the snow covered reaches that are traversed.

  • Engaging and nostalgic turn-based combat system inspired by Chrono Trigger with flexible combo mechanics.
  • Beautiful and atmospheric winter-themed graphics complemented by an emotionally evocative piano-only soundtrack.
  • Compelling emotional story exploring themes of sacrifice and companionship with likable characters and a focused narrative.
  • Repetitive and limited environments (mostly snow and ice) causing visual monotony throughout the game.
  • Inconsistent and sometimes frustrating mechanics including a complex loot and skill system that is poorly explained.
  • Lack of quality of life features such as no autosave in dungeons, sparse save points, no map or minimap, and linear gameplay.
  • story
    1,162 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story of "I Am Setsuna" is a melancholic, emotionally driven narrative centered on a sacrificial pilgrimage, heavily drawing inspiration from Final Fantasy X and classic JRPG tropes. While it effectively conveys themes of loss, sacrifice, and duty with a consistent somber tone and memorable music, many reviewers found the plot overly linear, predictable, and lacking depth, often feeling rushed or incomplete with underdeveloped characters and unresolved subplots. Despite its simplicity and some disappointing pacing, the story engages players who appreciate subtle, heartfelt storytelling in a nostalgic JRPG setting.

    • “Developed by Tokyo RPG Factory and published by Square Enix, the game positions itself as a homage to the genre’s formative years, drawing inspiration from beloved titles of the 1990s while telling a quiet, melancholic story of sacrifice and duty.”
    • “The story unfolds in a largely linear fashion, focusing on the emotional burden carried by Setsuna and those who choose to accompany her. While the plot does not frequently surprise, it maintains a consistent thematic focus that reinforces its central ideas of loss, resolve, and fleeting warmth in a cold world.”
    • “Don’t expect any massive, mind-bending twists, but each of them do have a story to tell, and I Am Setsuna does a great job of setting them up, developing them, and letting them have their moments without bogging things down with heavy exposition or draggy-long cutscenes.”
    • “The story is extremely boring.”
    • “The story is what matters... and what crushes the whole experience, this game neither has genuine funny moments nor is it deep or mindful; everything feels random like a story brought up by a group of college students drunk to the ground coming up with ideas to push the story further.”
    • “The story is basically a poor remix of Final Fantasy X, badly remixed.”
  • music
    743 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music of "I Am Setsuna" is widely praised for its beautiful, melancholic piano-only soundtrack composed by Tomoki Miyoshi, which powerfully enhances the game's somber, snowy atmosphere and emotional narrative. While many find the minimalist piano score deeply evocative and memorable, some reviewers note the lack of instrumental variety and repetitiveness may cause the music to feel monotonous or less dynamic over extended playtime. Overall, the soundtrack stands out as the game's strongest and most distinctive element, often regarded as a key reason to experience the game.

    • “The whole game exudes a distinctly melancholic feeling using an experimental piano-only soundtrack and single frozen arctic setting.”
    • “Complementing the visuals is an exceptional piano-driven soundtrack that serves as the emotional backbone of the experience.”
    • “The soundtrack to the game is extremely well done. If you love piano based music, and you want to play the game while listening to them, you will love this game.”
    • “The soundtrack is piano only and gets repetitive very quickly, making it monotonous and draining the emotional impact.”
    • “The studio's soundtrack budget paid for one piano... and that's it; the limited instrumentation makes the music feel shallow and uninspired.”
    • “The solo piano strategy was bold, but without variety in instrumentation and arrangement, the soundtrack makes an already grey world feel even greyer.”
  • gameplay
    389 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay of "I Am Setsuna" is a nostalgic homage to classic JRPGs like Chrono Trigger, featuring an active time battle system with added mechanics such as momentum and quick-time events to enhance strategy. While the battle system and combos offer depth and tactical options, many players found the mechanics underexplained, occasionally confusing, and sometimes overly complex without adding meaningful impact. Overall, the gameplay is solid and enjoyable for fans of traditional JRPGs but can feel repetitive, simplistic, and less polished compared to its inspirations.

    • “Its core gameplay is a lot like Chrono Trigger: there is an ATB gauge that fills up and allows your characters to take actions, but the enemies are constantly moving around the screen, so timing and positioning matter.”
    • “A notable addition is the momentum mechanic, which rewards precise timing by enhancing abilities when actions are executed at the right moment.”
    • “The combat reminds me of a retro turn-based game with an active time battle (ATB) system, but layered with a 'momentum / spiritnite' mechanic that adds an extra strategic aspect to every encounter.”
    • “The gameplay is a sterling example of 'breadth, not depth': while each character may have many skills, and combinations for flashy moves exist, the multitude of skills (over one hundred) adds no real depth.”
    • “The game does a terrible job of explaining mechanics to you and has drastic difficulty spikes; the tutorial isn't integrated with combat but presented as text paragraphs with screenshots, making it hard to grasp.”
    • “The convoluted combat and character management mechanics require heavy research and turn the game into a chore, with the item and gear system being messy and unintuitive, needing external guides.”
  • graphics
    281 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

"I Am Setsuna" features a beautifully crafted winter-themed art style that blends nostalgic, old-school JRPG visuals with modern touches, creating a charming and cohesive atmosphere. While its graphics are praised for detailed environments, hand-painted aesthetics, and subtle effects like snow trails, some find the repetitive snowy setting and character models less appealing. Overall, the graphics effectively support the game's melancholic tone and nostalgic appeal, though they may not satisfy those seeking high-end or varied visuals.

    • “One of the game’s most defining features is its presentation, particularly its commitment to a winterbound aesthetic.”
    • “So let me elaborate, this game looks great utilising white space brilliantly with the cold snowy aesthetic, beautiful attention to detail with trees dropping snow as you walk past, the snowy tracks you leave behind slowly filling with the wind blown snow and the stark contrast of the orange trees spotted amongst the whites and muted colours of the landscape.”
    • “Graphics: drawn with great details of a skilled hand-painted style making it appear unique and gorgeous throughout the game’s voyage pleasing to one's eye yet also hitting the old classic days since the PlayStation.”
    • “Graphics: while initially well presented and cute, you quickly realize it doesn't offer much variety.”
    • “The character models were my least favorite aspect of the graphics, resembling something from a couple generations ago.”
    • “- graphics seem like something meant for the Nintendo DS, when this was released during PS4 era.”
  • grinding
    122 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Grinding in the game is a mixed experience; while the main story can be completed with minimal grinding, progression toward some postgame challenges, achievements, and skill acquisition often requires extensive and sometimes tedious farming for specific items obtained through complex kill conditions. Players frequently describe the gameplay loop of grinding for materials to unlock skills and powers as repetitive, with some bosses necessitating significant level or item grinding to overcome, leading to frustration for those averse to such mechanics. However, grinding can also be satisfying or peaceful for completionists and players who enjoy farming and exploration at their own pace.

    • “Combat is simple, no grinding required to finish the main story; some major grinding is needed to clear some postgame challenges, but still completed all achievements within 40 hours.”
    • “On a positive note, there is almost no grinding necessary when you know what you're doing, and when you do have to grind, there are prime farming points that bring this to a minimum.”
    • “Overall, I think this game is for casual JRPGers and not for newbies because there's really no grinding for side quests involved.”
    • “There isn't even a point to grinding because you can kill everything in the game at what I assume is half the level cap.”
    • “The amount of grinding required to merely obtain the next move on the list is stunning.”
    • “Aside from presentation and music, this game brings nothing to the table, mostly average story which gets even worse the further you are in, completely unbalanced battle system with very confusing aspects and random effects; character progression completely reliant on loot grinding by killing monsters in a specific way which comes down to very extensive grind.”
  • emotional
    86 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The emotional aspect of "I Am Setsuna" is defined by its somber, heartfelt narrative centered on themes of sacrifice, companionship, and melancholy, often enhanced by a sparse, evocative piano-driven soundtrack that deeply reinforces the mood. While many find the story touching and nostalgic, praising its ability to evoke genuine emotion reminiscent of classic JRPGs, some criticize the characters as underdeveloped or clichéd, which can limit emotional investment. Overall, the game offers a bittersweet, emotionally reflective experience that resonates strongly with players drawn to its tone and music, despite occasional narrative and character depth shortcomings.

    • “From its opening moments, it makes clear that its ambitions are emotional rather than grandiose, inviting players into a world defined by snow, silence, and sorrow.”
    • “Complementing the visuals is an exceptional piano-driven soundtrack that serves as the emotional backbone of the experience.”
    • “The best part of the game is the genuine emotional weight that comes with a lot of the characters and their internal conflicts, the interactions between Setsuna and Endir being the best of the bunch in my opinion, but a lot of the other characters get impactful story arcs of their own.”
    • “Very simplistic, very linear, very short, visually uninteresting with a boring story and characters.”
    • “Boring story.”
    • “Boring story.”
  • atmosphere
    65 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's atmosphere is widely praised for its beautiful, melancholic, snow-covered world enhanced by a haunting piano soundtrack that deeply complements its emotional, somber tone. Its restrained, classic JRPG style and art direction create a cozy yet grim mood that effectively immerses players despite simple mechanics and a straightforward story. Overall, the atmosphere is the standout feature, evoking nostalgia and emotional depth that many find compelling.

    • “It effectively enhances the cold and isolated atmosphere of a snow-ridden world and a journey destined to end in sacrifice.”
    • “Combined with the muted snowy landscapes and understated but excellent piano score, I Am Setsuna is a game oozing with the sort of melancholy and morose atmosphere I hoped for: this is the sort of world that’s harsh and unforgiving, filled with inhabitants struggling to make do as best they can, and it’s this same comfortably sad mood that kept me anticipating where the game would go next.”
    • “Its snowbound world and haunting piano score create a memorable atmosphere that carries the experience even when its mechanics and story remain familiar.”
    • “You could visit the empty groves or the abandoned villages, but there is nothing there for you besides the atmosphere and the tone.”
    • “This simplicity helps maintain focus on the narrative and atmosphere, but it also means that players seeking dense systems, branching storylines, or extensive endgame content may find the experience lacking in depth.”
    • “- predictable world map atmosphere covered in snow.”
  • character development
    56 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Character development in the game receives mixed feedback, with many reviewers noting it as shallow, minimal, or formulaic, especially concerning the main protagonist, while some supporting characters and villains are better developed. The character designs and art are widely praised for their charm and style, though the narrative often prioritizes mood and nostalgia over deep growth or complexity. Overall, character development is seen as a weak point, with sidequests and story moments offering only brief or unsatisfying insights into the characters.

    • “Character development is fantastic; the characters are adorable, and they each have their own unique personality, with their own perspectives of the world. Characters feel real, and their actions feel genuine and believable.”
    • “I am Setsuna is an excellent JRPG with a superb story, enjoyable combat, and terrific character development.”
    • “Although it takes itself quite seriously, character development is one of the biggest things going for this game, especially for supporting characters.”
    • “The gameplay doesn't really matter because the characters just fall completely flat and get hardly any character development.”
    • “The story is a very poor Final Fantasy X with next to no character development and all the plot is squeezed in at the end (by which point you don't really care).”
    • “Character development is incredibly poor; the character you play as has no depth or emotion.”
  • replayability
    23 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game offers limited replayability due to its short, linear storyline, lack of meaningful choices, and minimal side content accessible mostly after completion. While some note minor additional content and customization options that extend playtime, overall the game lacks new game+ modes and significant post-game incentives, resulting in a generally low replay value.

    • “After you beat the game though, it has replay value and I think most people will enjoy it.”
    • “The game also has some replay value as you can't collect everything in one playthrough; certain side quests and items unlock once the game is beaten.”
    • “The ability to custom tailor each of your abilities and support skills provides added hours of replay value on top of additional side quest content provided.”
    • “The length of the game leaves a lot to be desired. It is a staple of the JRPG genre to provide a gaming experience full of hidden locations, extra side quests, and replayability; however, I Am Setsuna lacks these heavily. There are a few side quests, but they are not available until near the end of the game. There is little chance of deviation from the next objective for the first 14 hours of a game that takes less than 20 hours. For the first 5 hours, the scope of any choice seems quite small in terms of character customization.”
    • “I will finish by saying it looks nice, the music is atmospheric, and the time I spent playing I do not begrudge, but for the price point it retails at currently (£29.99 at the time of review), I do not believe this warrants a 20-hour, linear JRPG experience that uses its inspirations as a selling point whilst not quite living up to them in terms of innovation or length/replayability.”
    • “Overpriced, no physical copy, no after-game content, glitched my save files so they won’t save, no replay value. You're able to make choices, but from what I noticed they don’t affect the story.”
  • stability
    13 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Stability in the game is mixed, with many users experiencing occasional bugs, freezes, and crashes—particularly when switching input methods or accessing certain features—though some report smooth performance and consistent framerate on specific hardware. Overall, the game is generally competent and runs fine on consoles or well-equipped PCs, but glitches and freezes can still disrupt the experience.

    • “Runs great on my Razer 2016 laptop, constant 60 fps.”
    • “It's not even that the game is incompetent: it runs fine, it's not buggy, the difficulty runs all over the place but the spikes can be beaten by understanding the tools the game gives you, the music's nice, it's pretty, etc.”
    • “My take on Setsuna is that it’s competent: not buggy, boringly pretty, superficially good combat system.”
    • “It loads to the setting screen and when I try to go beyond the setting screen it freezes.”
    • “I've never paid $40 for a game that immediately crashed, doesn't give loot drops and freezes as soon as I open the first treasure chest.”
    • “If I switch to keyboard it just freezes!”
  • humor
    9 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game is polarizing, with some players appreciating the protagonist's witty and humorous dialogue options, while others find the humor largely absent or forced. Character interactions sometimes feel disconnected, leading to a lack of genuine comedic moments, though a few users enjoyed the blend of lightheartedness within the gameplay. Overall, the humor may not resonate consistently for all players.

    • “The protagonist's dialogue options are pretty funny.”
    • “I really liked the dialogue choices and thought they were hilarious (the outcome doesn't change but the dialogue is well done).”
    • “So funny!”
  • optimization
    8 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's optimization receives mixed feedback, with some praising smooth FPS, lack of lag, and good performance even at 4K resolution, while others criticize poor optimization tied to the Unity engine and performance issues in certain ports. The optimization system offers flexibility without unnecessary complexity, though some crafting mechanics feel superfluous and disconnected from combat impact.

    • “The system provides flexibility without creating overlong optimization layers.”
    • “Combat is straightforward and fairly simple, with the ability for optimization coming in how you allocate your techs/skills and your equipment.”
    • “The game is very well optimized and has a very good frame rate.”
    • “Can't recommend due to use of Unity engine and poor optimization.”
    • “Can't recommend in current state due to piss poor performance of this port.”
    • “I also believe there were way too many different crafting type mechanics, most of which seemed like fluff and a few I ignored completely with no penalty to my combat performance.”
  • monetization
    4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The monetization aspect is widely criticized as a cash grab, with players feeling the $40 price is unjustified given the game's lack of depth and failure to deliver on its advertised promise as a "spiritual successor" to classics like Chrono Trigger. Many see it as an unethical attempt to exploit fans of classic JRPGs without providing comparable quality or innovation.

    • “For a $40 game, this game is a cash grab feeding on fans of classic JRPGs that offers much too little to be desired.”
    • “For a dev to advertise their game as a spiritual successor to a game like Chrono Trigger, and then have it be practically nothing like Chrono Trigger other than being a turn-based JRPG, is just an unethical cash grab opportunity.”
    • “On the surface with its advertising and screenshots, it might look appealing but in its depth, it is quite bland in every shape and form.”
