Molly Medusa: Queen of Spit

Molly Medusa: Queen of Spit takes a great idea and, unfortunately, fails to deliver on its promise. The throwback camera is a mistake and needed far more refinement, and the controls feel clumsy as a result. Molly's lack of reaction to her curse takes away any emotional impetus or impact from the plot. There is a potential gem here, but despite a handful of inspired ideas, it feels antiquated and is very difficult to recommend, at least in its launch state.

  • The game features a charming cartoon-style art direction reminiscent of Wind Waker, with well-designed characters and world visuals.
  • Puzzles and dungeon designs are generally solid, challenging without being overly frustrating, making for an engaging Zelda-like experience.
  • Voice acting is surprisingly good and adds depth, with a distinctive soundtrack that grows on players despite initial unfamiliarity.
  • The camera is problematic—floaty, jittery, and often fights against the game's gravity-bending mechanics, causing user frustration and even motion sickness for some.
  • Controls and collision detection are clunky and inconsistent, leading to tedious gameplay moments and sometimes unfair damage or deaths.
  • The story is rushed and emotionally flat, with little narrative depth or cutscenes, and the game suffers from bugs, glitches, and lack of helpful puzzle hints.

The graphics feature a charming cartoon-style reminiscent of Zelda: Wind Waker, with appealing character designs and a well-executed aesthetic. However, the lack of graphical settings and the 3D movement can cause motion sickness for some players. Overall, the visual style is praised but may not suit everyone due to these issues.

    • “Most everything looks great; in particular, the cute art-style lends itself to some really fun character designs.”
    • “Fantastic cartoon-style graphics reminiscent of games like Zelda Wind Waker; this is visually amazing.”
    • “The well-executed aesthetic, visually appealing graphic style, and voice acting are unfortunately not enough to pull you out of the gameplay mess.”
    • “For starters, it gives me severe motion sickness to the point where I had to stop playing just to throw up, and that's from, I believe, a little bit of the graphics, the camera, and 3D movement style.”
    • “The graphics were okay, had a semi Legend of Zelda Wind Waker kind of charm, but I think it's also one of the reasons for my motion sickness when playing the game, so I can't recommend getting this game even if it's on sale. I honestly wish I never bought this damn thing.”
    • “There are no graphical settings at all.”

The story centers on Molly, a young sculptress cursed by Circe, and her quest to prove herself beyond the curse, offering more depth than initially apparent. However, the narrative suffers from uneven storytelling, lack of emotional weight, minimal cutscenes or dialogue, and sparse plot development between gameplay sections. Additionally, some players find the gravity-bending mechanic distracting and the pacing hampers engagement with the story.

    • “While the story of the young sculptress Molly, who is cursed by Circe for her brash ambition, is definitely charming, the added gravity-bend mechanic is bold though sometimes wonky and nausea-inducing.”
    • “She is now on a quest to overcome the curse and show Circe that she is more than just a plaything.”
    • “Molly's story is more than you would have thought at first, definitely worth a deep dive.”
    • “The game doesn't explain anything gimmick-wise, and the story is almost non-existent.”
    • “You begin as a dissatisfied apprentice, sent out on a meaningless mission with no story snippets in between dungeons.”
    • “Camera is a source of endless frustration, plot lacks emotional weight because of uneven storytelling, shift in music styles can take players out of the moment.”
  • music

25% positive mentions, 37% neutral mentions, 38% negative mentions

The music in the game is a mix of guitar-driven and unconventional tracks that some players find catchy and unique, while others find repetitive and annoying due to a limited soundtrack. The frequent reuse of rock music during long dungeon segments can become tiresome, and shifts in music style occasionally disrupt immersion. Overall, the soundtrack has standout moments but lacks variety and can feel repetitive.

    • “The soundtrack was jarring at first, but quickly grew on me; it's not at all what I expected going into the game, but it's weirdly killer.”
    • “And the OST was dope as hell.”
    • “The metal music quickly becomes annoying.”
    • “The amount of soundtrack is rather small, and since you have to play a dungeon for about an hour plus, you're going to hear the same rock music over and over again.”
    • “With some guitar-driven tunes intermingled with antique instruments, the music rapidly devolves into mediocrity.”

The gameplay of "Molly Medusa" struggles primarily due to problematic camera movement and a wonky gravity-bending mechanic that can feel jittery and even cause nausea. While the puzzles and core medusa-curse concept are interesting, overall execution and mechanics often detract from the experience despite a charming story and appealing art style.

    • “I had a somewhat fun time with it at first: the world and character design is good, the Medusa curse is an interesting mechanic, and the puzzles are quite nice.”
    • “While the story of the young sculptress Molly, who is jinxed by Circe for her brash ambition, is definitely charming, the added gravity-bend mechanic is as bold as it is unique.”
    • “The main offender is the camera movement, which struggles with one of the game's core mechanics and as a result ends up feeling janky and jittery.”
