While some players noted that the story takes time to gain momentum, many appreciated its unique approach and emotional depth, making it a compelling addition to the series. The game's rich storytelling, combined with beautiful pixel art and sound design, creates a haunting atmosphere that resonates with players, despite some critiques regarding pacing and certain horror tropes.
“A beautifully told horror story with excellent pixel art animation, a clever concept and an ending that packs one hell of a punch.”
“Overall, I loved the entire story, and it definitely teaches players to become more open-minded towards people who are going through loss, depression, or suicidal thoughts.”
“The story is very rich, I definitely got lost in what happens and I thought the way they allow the story to unfold was creative and unique.”
“Also, the story takes a long time to pick up steam.”
“If you're like me and love a clear plot that doesn't scam you for an anticlimactic ending, then you don't want this game. In the start, Phil was hiding in his room for months from his abusive family, and it goes through that he's 'dating' Noelle, but she starts to get feelings for her stalky neighbor Brian. As time goes on, the parents aren't listening to him or his sister about getting mental help, and his dad canceled his bank account to try to get him out. Then the mom later on brought a priest to help instead of a 'shrink', as they call it.”
“I do take issue with some of the cheaper jumpscares, and there are bits of foreshadowing that lead nowhere, including several explicit references to the previous games, which may raise a few too many expectations over the trajectory of the story, which is a lot quieter and sadder than said expectations.”
