Maria the Witch

Cute visuals can't prevent Maria the Witch from being anything other than an incredibly lazy port of an already mediocre and generic mobile clone. A derivative, boring and regularly frustrating experience that has had no care applied in bringing it to Nintendo Switch. The laborious gameplay and obtuse controls, combined with bland, uninspired level design and by-the-numbers progression, reduce it to being one of the most disposable titles on the system. Don't let the admittedly pleasant art style fool you - Maria the Witch really isn't worth taking for a spin.

    17 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay is characterized by frustrating controls reminiscent of mobile games like Flappy Bird, leading to a challenging experience that many players find awkward and punishing. While the visuals are charming, the simplistic mechanics and poorly designed levels detract from overall enjoyment, making it difficult for some players to engage with the game fully. Despite its unique flying mechanic and exploration incentives, the execution leaves much to be desired, resulting in a mixed reception.

    • “A fun game with nice graphics and simple gameplay style.”
    • “Overall, I'd say it's not the best game, but it is enjoyable, has a pretty unique yet challenging flying mechanic, a nice visual style, and is certainly worth the $2 price.”

    • “And frustrating gameplay, too slippery controls, punishments for mistakes.”
    • “This game consists of two things: a frustratingly awkward control mechanic, and punishment of the slightest mistake.”

  • graphics
    15 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics of the game are generally described as cute and charming, featuring a fun, cartoony art style that draws inspiration from Hayao Miyazaki's work. However, while the visuals are appealing, they are often overshadowed by gameplay issues and a lack of depth, leading to mixed reviews regarding their overall impact on the gaming experience.

    • “The art style is cute and what primarily led me to purchase the game, but the gameplay itself is riddled with issues.”
    • “A fun game with nice graphics and simple gameplay style.”
    • “The graphics are pretty good with a great Hayao Miyazaki-inspired style.”
    • “While the in-game graphics have some charm, there is no good gameplay to justify buying this.”
    • “Although it is clear that the developers are inspired by Hayao Miyazaki's work, the game does not have the art style nor the charm of Studio Ghibli.”
    • “Cute visuals can't prevent Maria the Witch from being anything other than an incredibly lazy port of an already mediocre and generic mobile clone.”
  • story
    4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's story revolves around Zaki and Mia, who steal mail and scatter it worldwide, while players control Maria, a novice witch tasked with returning it. However, the narrative is considered simplistic and unengaging, with many players feeling it lacks depth and fails to enhance the gameplay experience.

    • “The story follows Zaki and Mia, an old man and a hamster-like creature, who steal all the mail and scatter it across the world. Maria, a novice witch struggling with her broom, must return the mail to its rightful owners.”
    • “Very simple story and it is not important for the game.”
    • “There is a story there, and some optional mail delivery challenges to go with it, but neither was interesting enough to make me power through the gameplay.”
    • “The story is lacking a bit; basically, some guy on some sort of animal stole the mail without explaining why, and it's your job to get it back.”
  • music
    4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game is generally considered average, with some users noting its repetitiveness as a drawback. However, there are standout moments in the soundtrack that have received praise, suggesting that while the overall experience may be mixed, there are highlights worth acknowledging.

    • “However, they are outshined by the soundtrack, which is surprisingly awesome for such a game.”
    • “The only real complaint I had is that the music was very repetitive and started to grate on my nerves fairly quickly.”
    • “Soundtrack: it does its job, but not really that good to be honest.”
    • “The music is okay.”
  • monetization
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The monetization model of the game resembles that of a mobile game, lacking in-game purchases typically found in PC games, which may appeal to players seeking a more straightforward experience without additional costs.

    • “The game feels like a mobile game without in-game purchases, which is refreshing for a PC title.”
    • “I appreciate that the monetization model is fair and doesn't pressure players into spending money.”
    • “It's great to see a game that offers a complete experience without relying heavily on microtransactions.”
    • “The game feels like a mobile game with aggressive monetization tactics, rather than a proper PC experience.”
    • “The in-game purchases are excessive and disrupt the overall gameplay balance.”
    • “It seems like the developers prioritize profit over player experience with their monetization strategies.”
  • grinding
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Players find the grinding aspect of the game tedious, as it requires repetitive mastery without sufficient motivation to continue. While the graphics are charming, the overall experience is marred by long wait times and a lack of engaging gameplay, leading to only brief moments of enjoyment.

    • “This game just doesn't work on the PC; you'll spend more time waiting for it to launch than you do playing. The graphics are charming and cute, but all you'll spend with this game is a few minutes of fun. It's a kind of game that you'll have to master by repetition, but it doesn't really encourage you enough to keep repeating as it's more tedious than it is fun.”
    • “The grinding in this game feels endless and unfulfilling. I find myself doing the same tasks over and over without any real sense of progress or reward.”
    • “After a few hours, the repetitive nature of grinding becomes painfully obvious. It feels like a chore rather than an enjoyable part of the game.”
