Combat systems are often described as weak, and many users express frustration with slow progression and the need for more polish and quality-of-life improvements. Overall, while the game offers a solid foundation for city-building and resource management, it requires significant enhancements to fully engage players.
“The gameplay consists of the usual 'find wood, mine stone, build stuff' and it is done well.”
“Immersive gameplay and very enjoyable to play.”
“Great builder/survivor with some different mechanics than most builders.”
“The same handful of events appear over and over again, and have little to no impact on gameplay.”
“It's full of weird little errors, the mechanics and UI are clunky as hell, there's a lot of information you really need but don't get, the 'events' are incredibly repetitive, half the time the wording is so bad you're left confused about what's actually happening.”
“At the end of the game it feels like a repetitive mobile game and it is one of the weakest games of the genre I have played recently in terms of gameplay for this reason.”

Players find the grinding aspect of the game to be largely tedious and repetitive, particularly due to excessive micromanagement requirements for tasks like building maintenance, farming, and job assignments. While some enjoy the initial challenge and sense of control, many express frustration with the lack of automation and the overwhelming nature of managing a growing population, leading to a feeling of monotony over time. Overall, the game has potential but currently suffers from shallow mechanics and a need for more engaging options to alleviate the grind.
“You'll need a second life for grinding.”
“The game feels completely generic and is just tedious to play.”
“This isn't a colony management/raiding game set in the Viking era like I had hoped; it's a tedious colony micro-management game.”
“Farming is a pain as well; you can have 20 farmers hired, and they will stand around picking their nose while a field lays empty because you did not personally give the order to plant it again.”

The story aspect of "Land of the Vikings" receives mixed reviews, with some players finding the dialogue and narrative elements to be poorly written and generic, while others appreciate the immersive setting and the player's ability to shape their Viking saga through impactful decisions. However, many criticize the repetitiveness of quests and the slow progression, suggesting that the game lacks a compelling overarching narrative and meaningful goals. Overall, while the game offers engaging quests and spontaneous events, it suffers from a lack of depth and coherence in its storytelling.
“From choosing their appearance and skills to making impactful decisions that shape the story, players have a high level of agency in shaping their Viking saga.”
“Land of the Vikings is a standout title that excels in its immersive setting, deep role-playing elements, and epic quests and adventures.”
“Its simplistic approach is helpful to having fun, and the random story elements add a level of liveliness to make it feel like you're actually managing a Viking village.”
“The intro dialogue and story are laughable, as if written by a high schooler; just stupid, lazy, and generic.”
“Individual villager missions are very poorly written, to the point where I found myself reading a script three times to get my head around the poor English, and in some cases, villager missions made zero sense.”
“This becomes interesting and even a challenge for a time, but becomes tedious as you press forward to an endless quest that barely feels Viking.”

The music in the game receives mixed reviews, with some players praising its immersive and calming qualities that enhance the Viking atmosphere, while others criticize it for being repetitive and lacking variety. Several users noted that the soundtrack feels generic or reminiscent of other media, detracting from the overall experience. Overall, while the music contributes positively to the game's ambiance, many players desire a broader selection to maintain engagement.
“The graphics are stunning, and the soundtrack immerses you in the Viking world.”
“The game's immersive landscapes, Nordic music, and the whole Viking aesthetic create an atmosphere that will make you feel like you've just stepped out of your longboat.”
“Incredible city builder with the Norse theme, the music was perfect.”
“Look great game has potential but the music isn't even Viking; it's like simulation music. The fighting is a card roll with chance, pretty boring and gets that way fast. You can make a town and watch the villagers do their thing, but that's about it. Then you get to see an earthquake here and there with a fire that everyone just walks past like it's not their problem. If there's a tech for it, good luck finding it. The tech tree is pretty badly put together; some of the things should just be a thing and some are so high up but such a basic thing. If you had actually tried to make it a bit more immersive with the troops and raiding, you would have a much better game. All in all, pretty disappointed in the game as I love Viking culture. A shame I'm 10 hours in as I'd rather have my money back because I know the game devs probably want to address these points, but those were the simple ones that stood out as they should really be like that in the first place. Seems lazy in my opinion.”
“First off, part of their music score sounds like it was ripped off from Netflix's The Witcher; it sounds like Henry Cavill is about to pop out like the damn Kool-Aid guy dressed up as Geralt.”
“The graphics are decent but not amazing; the music is very calming but very repetitive and eventually will annoy you.”

The optimization of "Land of the Vikings" has received largely negative feedback, with players reporting frequent freezes, crashes, and performance issues such as lag and screen tearing. While some users noted that the game runs smoothly on higher-end rigs, the overall consensus is that significant improvements are needed in optimization and graphical performance, especially given its early access status.
“First, if you're worried about hardware requirements, I can responsibly tell you that you don't need to worry. This game has very comfortable graphics and very good performance optimization. The building and environment have comfortable texture and quality.”
“The graphics seem a little dated and choppy at times, even on a higher-end GPU, but this is early access, so hopefully those graphics will get tweaked and optimized before the official release.”
“Pros: 1) It's about Vikings; 2) beautiful graphics; 3) runs smoothly (for the most part); 4) a lot of promise with raiding and trading; 5) a good amount of building diversity, considering it's still in early stages; 6) keeps you on your toes (village raids, natural disasters, etc.); 7) the editor is an awesome and easy-to-use tool; 8) gameplay is easy to learn and very intuitive.”
“Unfortunately, it's not optimized, so it freezes and crashes constantly.”
“Technical issues: despite its visual prowess, Land of the Vikings suffers from technical issues such as bugs, glitches, and performance issues.”
“The game definitely needs more content and optimization that has not arrived, and ultimately doesn't hold a candle to the colony sims that have been coming out in the last year.”

The atmosphere of the game is widely praised for its immersive landscapes, beautiful graphics, and well-executed sound design, particularly the nordic music that enhances the viking aesthetic. However, some players feel that the cartoonish style and certain audio elements detract from the overall experience, leading to a disconnect during gameplay. While the ambiance is generally appreciated, there are concerns about gameplay mechanics that may hinder full enjoyment of the atmospheric elements.

“The game's immersive landscapes, Nordic music, and the whole Viking aesthetic create an atmosphere that will make you feel like you've just stepped out of your longboat.”
“The atmosphere feels flat and uninspired, lacking the depth and detail that would make the world feel alive.”
“Despite the beautiful graphics, the atmosphere is often overshadowed by repetitive gameplay and a lack of engaging storytelling.”
- replayability6 mentions

Overall, the game's replayability is considered limited due to a lack of random map generation and persistent glitches, leading to a quick completion time of around 10-15 hours. Players feel that the experience does not offer enough variety or depth to encourage multiple playthroughs.
“There's quite a few of these 3D RimWorld-type games out there that provide unique gameplay but never seem to expand much past that, which hurts replayability.”
“But in the end, like Banished, it is a 'survival' city builder - so it attracts a certain kind of player who likes to play around with the supply chain, and the replayability is quite limited.”
“If you want a mediocre 10-15 hour city-building game with a Viking theme, look elsewhere... you can 100% the game in 13 hours... no replay value.”
“As best I can tell, there isn't any random map generation, which is going to very quickly kill replay value.”

Players find the humor in the game's quirky animations and unexpected moments, such as characters walking into mountains and disappearing, which adds a lighthearted charm to the early gameplay. Despite some rough edges, the fun ideas and amusing scenarios keep players entertained and excited for future updates.
“Well.. they are not moving, I think I have even seen a fisherperson sleeping in the boat as well. A little more on the animations will probably be inserted at a later time, but I thought it was humorous. People also do tend to walk right into the side of a mountain and vanish, then poof... they walk back out at another area.”
“The funny thing is that I saw a commercial about the game on Reddit.”
