  • gameplay

    27 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Gameplay in the game offers a familiar survival experience centered on exploration, crafting, and cooperative play, but suffers from inconsistent and buggy mechanics, particularly in building, combat, and inventory management. While the peaceful mode and cooperative elements enhance enjoyment, many core systems feel unfinished or poorly implemented, limiting player reward and immersion. Overall, the gameplay loop is straightforward and satisfying to some, but technical issues and lack of mechanical polish hold the experience back.

    • “Away from Life is an open-world survival game that embraces many familiar mechanics of the genre while attempting to build a large and immersive island adventure around them.”
    • “Cooperative gameplay further strengthens the experience by transforming routine survival tasks into collaborative adventures filled with exploration and discovery.”
    • “Its combination of exploration, crafting, underwater discovery, and open-world freedom creates a satisfying gameplay loop even if many of its systems still need refinement.”
    • “The mechanics themselves are really poorly implemented. You cut trees down that have loads of palm leaves on and don't receive any palm leaves, for example. This means that it's easier to build complex equipment than it is to build a simple shelter.”
    • “Combat is clunky and doesn't connect well. The base building mechanic doesn't quite fit right when you're trying to build things; for example, you can't even place a stairwell on the entryway of your doorway to help you walk up into your home easier.”
    • “There's just too much unfinished, buggy glitches everywhere with awkward controls, commands, mechanics, and stability.”
  • graphics

    16 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's graphics are widely praised for their beauty, immersion, and smooth performance, effectively capturing the island survival atmosphere despite not matching AAA-level detail. Some minor visual and environmental inconsistencies are noted, but overall, the visuals significantly enhance the gameplay experience and are considered a standout aspect.

    • “The graphics are spectacular and the very small team that made this game possible genuinely care about the game and their community ❤️ 10/10 recommend.”
    • “Graphics are beautiful, 0 bugs, realism, everything you could want in a survival game this is it!”
    • “I can not get the graphics to clean up.”
    • “Intel(r) UHD Graphics 770 (128 MB) - implies possible low graphics performance or limitations.”
    • “While the graphics may not compete with high-budget AAA survival games, the environments are attractive enough to maintain immersion throughout long play sessions.”
  • stability

    10 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game shows promise with active developer support and generally smooth performance during exploration, but persistent bugs and glitches—such as fragile vehicles, random teleportation, and occasional crashes—hinder overall stability. While stability has improved compared to other early access titles, the game still feels incomplete and unstable, impacting the play experience.

    • “So far traveled to a decent amount of islands and the game runs great.”
    • “New boat is a little fragile, and gets stuck/glitched easily (maybe add an anchor to it so it doesn't have to be beached?). When it glitches, you spawn across the map somewhere random like it was driving the whole time.”
    • “My first playthrough, I played 3.5 hours then the game slammed shut (because it is a new game and buggy) and I lost everything.”
    • “There's just too much unfinished, buggy glitches everywhere with awkward controls, commands, mechanics and stability.”
  • atmosphere

    8 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's atmosphere effectively captures the feeling of isolation and survival on a deserted island, enhanced by immersive sound design and satisfying exploration. While the world feels believable and visually appealing, a lack of diverse wildlife and occasional technical issues slightly detract from the experience. Overall, the atmosphere successfully supports an engaging and immersive survival experience with promising cooperative elements.

    • “The graphics are fantastic and the whole atmosphere is amazing; it truly captures being stuck on an island with no sense of what to do.”
    • “Quiet moments while exploring forests or sailing between islands feel surprisingly atmospheric due to the effective audio capturing isolation.”
    • “The world is enjoyable to explore, and the atmosphere successfully captures the lonely tension that survival games often strive for.”
  • story

    7 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story aspect is currently minimal and focused on survival and exploration, with players seeking more missions, narrative depth, and lively world elements to enhance immersion. While the core survival adventure is engaging, some quests have technical issues, and the game would benefit from expanded story content and more dynamic NPCs or wildlife. Overall, it offers a promising foundation with room for richer story development in future updates.

    • “Your mission is simple yet challenging: survive the wild and somehow make your way back to civilization.”
    • “If you enjoy survival games where exploration, crafting, and discovery are the heart of the experience, this adventure offers a challenging and immersive island survival story.”
    • “In future updates it would be amazing to see more story missions and more enemy NPCs or wildlife and a map size increase if possible, the game is awesome and has potential to be really amazing.”
    • “Its a good game iv built the helicopter the huge raft the small one iv built stone houses thatched once wood ones iv been to every island it just needs more life and story and when you chop a tree down you dont get any palm leaves like at all only some trees give you them when all trees have leaves to no get any is abit annoying also the gps is not accurate it shows me on a mountain and im on flat ground on some of the islands iv only seen one turtle only a hand full of crabs and one wasp or hornet the whale some times gets stuck in one spot in the sea and then when i get close to it bombs off and vanishes and because iv build on a few islands the game takes ages to load even tho im running it on a m.2 memory with 16gb ram sometimes i have to close the game and reload it to get my save to load besides that the graphics are fantastic the hole atmosphere is amazing it truly captures being stuck on an island with no sense of what to-do all the building stuff is amazing the rafts are the best too no problems even after placing loads of stuff onto it around the game is great i cant waite to see what and where you take this game.”
    • “The quest where i have to visit 3 islands and find the 2 notes, i have found both of the notes, and i know they are the right ones since they worked for my friends.”
    • “They dont register for the quest so now im stuck.”
  • optimization

    5 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Optimization experiences are mixed; some users report performance drops, bugs, and issues even on high-end hardware, while others find the game polished with smooth performance and good graphics. The developers show commitment to ongoing improvements through updates and optimization efforts.

    • “I was a little hesitant to buy it at first, with it being in early access and from a first-time developer, but I have to say this is very well-polished, runs smoothly, and the graphics are great.”
    • “The graphics are solid, performance is smooth, and I haven’t run into any major issues so far.”
    • “You added WC to character; my game optimization is terrible even with a 4050 GPU.”
    • “Players may encounter bugs involving inventory management, building mechanics, physics issues, multiplayer synchronization, and occasional performance drops.”
    • “The developers also appear committed to improving the game over time through updates, additional content, and optimization efforts.”
  • music

    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's music is subtle and well-balanced, enhancing immersion without becoming overwhelming by complementing natural environmental sounds. Players find the soundtrack relaxing and effective in creating tension, contributing positively to the overall atmosphere.

    • “The game wisely avoids overwhelming players with nonstop music, instead relying heavily on natural environmental sounds to create tension and immersion.”
    • “I plan to keep playing the game, and awaiting improvements, as it was a decently immersive and relaxing experience, especially with the sounds and music in background.”
    • “The music and the graphics are very nice.”
  • humor

    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's humor is well-received, characterized by a unique atmosphere and a distinct sense of humor. Players appreciate the solo developer's effort and are eager to see future updates that could expand its comedic elements.

    • “Personally, my impression is extremely positive: the game has atmosphere, its own sense of humor, and a lot of potential.”
    • “The funny thing is this is a solo dev and to be honest, keep up the work. I cannot wait for the 2026 roadmap and to see what else you incorporate into this game, especially when it has a lot of roads it could take.”
