  • The gameplay is simplistic, with easy puzzles and minimal challenge, leading to a feeling of linearity.

  • Technical issues such as bugs, frame rate drops, and clunky controls detract from the overall experience.
  • story
    288 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's story explores heavy themes such as injustice, inequality, and oppression, often drawing comparisons to works like George Orwell's "Animal Farm." While many players appreciate the atmospheric and visually striking narrative, some criticize its execution, noting that the plot can feel vague, heavy-handed, or abruptly concluded. Overall, the storytelling is seen as thought-provoking but may leave some players wanting more depth and clarity.

    • “The story of the game is about injustice, inequality, slavery, abuse, and a whole bunch of other concepts that will make you think.”
    • “The gameplay is simple, but the story and social messages are heavy and deep, making you go serious one moment and chuckle the next.”
    • “The story is mysterious and unsettling, though the gameplay is short and straightforward.”
    • “It's like the story is going somewhere and everything is pretty clear, but for the last quarter of the game, it just takes a different route that doesn't really fit, in my opinion.”
    • “The story also ends on a frustratingly ambiguous and less than satisfying note.”
    • “I get what it’s trying to accomplish with the story, but it fell short.”
  • graphics
    180 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics of the game have received mixed reviews, with many praising the striking monochromatic art style and atmospheric visuals that evoke classic expressionist cinema. However, some players noted issues with low-quality models and optimization, leading to performance problems even on high settings. Overall, while the aesthetic is often described as beautiful and engaging, it sometimes detracts from gameplay clarity and depth.

    • “The visuals are stunning, with an atmospheric world that really pulls you in.”
    • “The graphics are nothing but stunning.”
    • “The art style, the set pieces, and the camera work are some of its high points; it really looks gorgeous, and has a really creative vibe of old expressionist cinema.”
    • “The game is rough around the edges and the lack of options, graphical fidelity, and short game length (2.5-3 hours) shows that.”
    • “The black and white graphics are a little grainy, even on high resolutions, making identifying your character a bit difficult in places.”
    • “It's just a shame since games that White Shadows clearly take a lot from are able to depict their themes in such a nuanced way that it feels like the developers took so much of the visuals from those games into account when making this game instead of all the other parts that made those games particularly spectacular.”
  • gameplay
    170 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay of "White Shadows" has received mixed reviews, with many players noting its simplicity and frequent comparisons to titles like "Limbo" and "Inside." While some appreciate the atmospheric visuals and narrative depth, others criticize the gameplay for being dull, linear, and plagued by technical issues such as clipping and animation glitches. Overall, the game is seen as more focused on its artistic presentation than on delivering a compelling gameplay experience, often resulting in a lack of engaging mechanics and challenging puzzles.

    • “Gameplay is laid back and allowed me to enjoy and soak in the visuals and atmosphere.”
    • “White Shadows' gameplay focuses on exploration and puzzle-solving, combining platforming elements with environmental challenges.”
    • “Beautiful visuals, solid enjoyable gameplay with good pacing for new mechanics/elements, decent audio, good story pacing, no glitches.”
    • “Clearly a game that placed a high priority on its art direction, even for this subgenre, as there are lots of gameplay-minimal sections where you just walk forward, or have no real control over your character while the camera pans or flies through its environments; as for the actual gameplay, the puzzles and platforming are fairly simple, with a few somewhat frustrating timed platforming sections, and a few spots where the art direction makes it tough to distinguish between scenery and your path forward.”
    • “The gameplay is very similar to 'Little Nightmares', and it changes several times as you play (the story supports this).”
    • “The mechanics are fine, standard 'Limbo'/'Little Nightmares'-esque clumsy platforming, but all of the platforming is extremely basic; it's way too easy and linear to be anywhere near fun gameplay, and the 'puzzles' in this 'puzzle-platformer' exist almost solely of either moving boxes to climb ledges or pulling levers in the correct sequence, and the worst part of all is that most of the game isn't even the basic platforming or the boring puzzles; you just walk.”
  • music
    120 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game is predominantly classical, which some players found enhances the atmosphere and complements the visuals, while others criticized it for being repetitive and not always fitting the game's dark themes. Many noted that the soundtrack features well-known public domain pieces, which can detract from the overall experience due to their overuse and lack of originality. Overall, while the music contributes to the game's aesthetic, its execution and variety leave room for improvement.

    • “The music was really well thought out and a big part of the atmosphere of the game.”
    • “Outstanding visuals, outstanding soundtrack, outstanding experience all the way around.”
    • “The soundtrack is a who's who of classical music which in normal circumstances I would attribute to low or no music budget but in this game's setting it does work quite well.”
    • “Having mentioned the use of classical music, this game uses it so often. It's not that I'm not a fan of the classics, because I am, but having almost every other scene feature either a classic song or repeat a song that played like 5 minutes ago that also just doesn't fit gets boring and repetitive, especially when I've heard 'Flight of the Bumblebee' for the third time. Aside from classical music, the sound design and use of audio is jarring at worst and repetitive at best. At several points in the game, there will be an area that constantly loops the same exact sound over and over, which isn't a bad thing; however, the sounds are looped about every 10 seconds and can get very annoying very quickly. I'm not asking for the devs to have several unique sounds for every small detail, but it'd be nice to have more than one sound for a train, and that same sound doesn't almost give me a heart attack most of the time I hear it. Also, at times the audio seems to dip in quality like it was screen recorded instead of an audio file.”
    • “My biggest issue was the soundtrack; I just personally felt like a lot of the music choices really didn't fit with the dark dystopian feel of the game.”
    • “Add to that a soundtrack of classical music that's in public domain instead of a proper soundtrack (I mean, I really love some of these compositions, but come on), long unskippable cutscenes that you have to watch again and again if you try to get some of the more difficult achievements, and a last chapter that was extremely underwhelming and boring, and you get a disappointing package.”
  • atmosphere
    100 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The atmosphere of the game is widely praised for its striking monochromatic visuals, haunting sound design, and deep social commentary, creating an immersive and unsettling experience reminiscent of titles like "Limbo" and "Inside." While some players appreciate the artistic vision and emotional depth, others feel that the gameplay lacks polish and complexity, occasionally detracting from the overall impact. Overall, the game's ability to evoke a strong sense of place and mood is a standout feature, making it a compelling choice for fans of atmospheric storytelling.

    • “The atmosphere pulls you in right away, and the mix of light and shadow makes every scene unforgettable.”
    • “A hauntingly beautiful cinematic platformer with stunning black-and-white visuals and a dark, thought-provoking atmosphere.”
    • “The game is full of unsettling imagery and creepy sounds that together create an atmosphere that can really give you chills.”
    • “The atmosphere felt like Little Nightmares at first, but as soon as you realize that you are basically in absolutely no danger regardless of your choices, the intensity became non-existent.”
    • “The biggest reason I'm not recommending this game is because I read other reviews talking about 'Inside' and 'Limbo' and although it definitely looked like a similar game, everything in it is so heavy-handed and on the nose - I feel like if the game was a bit more subtle about its theme where the player discovers a bit more about what's going on slowly, the game/atmosphere would improve a lot.”
  • stability
    11 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Overall, the game's stability is mixed, with several users reporting minor glitches, clipping issues, and occasional bugs that can disrupt gameplay. While some players experienced no major issues and found the game functional, others noted that the platforming mechanics felt sluggish and basic. Despite these concerns, many still found the game enjoyable and recommend it, particularly for its visuals and pacing.

    • “Excellent restart points and no glitches.”
    • “Beautiful visuals, solid enjoyable gameplay with good pacing for new mechanics and elements, decent audio (not many tracks stand out but they did their job), good story pacing, no glitches. I paused a few times, so I'd estimate that it would take most people 2-2.5 hours to beat.”
    • “Platforming is very basic, sluggish, and buggy.”
    • “A few glitches here and there, lots of clipping which was annoying at times to see, especially since it was right in your face.”
    • “It was occasionally buggy, including one checkpoint where I kept restoring mid-fall.”
  • optimization
    11 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's optimization has received significant criticism, with players reporting frequent performance issues, including fluctuating frame rates and janky character movement. Many noted that despite its appealing graphics and design, the game struggles to run smoothly, particularly on lower-end PCs, and lacks a comprehensive options menu to adjust settings. Overall, the optimization appears to be a major drawback, detracting from the overall experience.

    • “Tremendously dystopian setting with very good lighting; however, the game's middle chapters ultimately suffer from performance issues and some mildly frustrating jank.”
    • “Performance struggles at times, with the player character and NPCs often jittering about for no reason.”
    • “Design and sound design are amazing (and horrifying), but the game is really unoptimized.”
    • “But player movement isn't polished, and the game is poorly optimized; I wasn't getting enough FPS, even with the simple noir graphics.”
    • “Poorly optimized graphics, and lacks an in-depth options menu.”
    • “There's a lot of performance issues, framerate creeping from 300 to 40, and then back up and back down. Clipping is extremely awkward in a lot of places, ledges not being possible to grab, and there's no yellow tape to guide players where to go, which led to me having to look up a walkthrough due to the poor readability.”
  • humor
    11 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's humor is a standout feature, blending dark and light-hearted elements effectively within its black-and-white aesthetic. Players appreciate the funny situations and witty cutscenes, while the engaging art style and sound design enhance the comedic experience. Overall, the humor adds a captivating layer to the gameplay, making it both entertaining and memorable.

    • “Pretty fun sidescroller/platformer with great humor and fun art style.”
    • “It's very cinematic and beautiful with a lot of dark humor.”
    • “Absolutely love it and its dark humor and gritty atmosphere is captivating.”
  • grinding
    11 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Players consistently find the grinding aspect of the game to be tedious and time-consuming, often describing it as slow and clunky. Many reviewers express frustration with the lengthy puzzles and repetitive tasks, suggesting that the experience can feel more like a chore than enjoyable gameplay. Overall, the grinding mechanics detract from the game's potential, leading to a lack of recommendation for those who value efficient gameplay.

    • “You'll need a second life for grinding.”
    • “I may have received this product as a gift for free, but for how much it goes at full price, with how tedious it is and, despite how I wanted it to end as soon as possible, how short it is, I can absolutely not recommend this to anyone who values any kind of wise spending.”
    • “The game has very long puzzles that become boring, grinding, and tedious after a while.”
  • emotional
    10 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The emotional aspect of the game is characterized by its visually stunning presentation and a heartfelt storyline, enhanced by impactful sound design that elevates key moments. While some players found the narrative thought-provoking and capable of evoking strong feelings, others felt that certain heavy themes lacked the depth needed to resonate fully, leading to a mix of discomfort and bittersweet emotions throughout the experience. Overall, the game elicits a range of emotional responses, from repulsion to reflection, but may not consistently deliver the emotional weight expected.

    • “White Shadows is visually stunning with a beautiful yet heartfelt storyline.”
    • “Sound plays a crucial role in establishing the emotional weight of certain scenes, and the moments when music swells—often in tandem with visual climaxes—can be deeply affecting.”
    • “Deep narrative: the plot is intriguing and provokes reflections on social and political issues, offering an emotional and engaging experience.”
  • replayability
    8 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Overall, the game's replayability is considered low due to its short completion time of 1.5 to 2.5 hours and a linear structure that offers little incentive for multiple playthroughs. While there are achievements to collect and chapter selections available, many players feel that the experience lacks depth, making subsequent runs less enjoyable.

    • “Replay value is pretty high as well.”
    • “The game is quite short (approx. 120 minutes of gameplay) but it definitely has replayability value.”
    • “There are achievements to pick up, which I missed on my first run, and there are generous chapter selections to aid in these.”
    • “But because you can complete this in a single evening, I'd say watch someone else play it than buy it, as it has zero replayability (unless you're an achievement hunter) and there simply isn't anything worth exploring in this linear sideways platformer.”
    • “It will take you between 1.5 and 2.5 hours to complete, and apart from replaying the exact experience again, there's really no replayability.”
    • “Finished the game in a few hours and the replayability factor is low... so was it worth $20?”
  • monetization
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The monetization aspect of the game heavily relies on advertisements and video content, which some players find intrusive and distracting from the narrative. The integration of ads into the game's aesthetic, reminiscent of classic film noir and dystopian themes, raises questions about the balance between storytelling and commercial interests.

    • “The dialogue that is provided comes in the form of advertisements and videos.”
    • “The film noir aesthetic reminded me of 1930s black and white movies, with elements of Bioshock and Blade Runner thrown into the mix – particularly with the verticality of the city's towers that rise into the sky, and the ubiquitous advertisement hoardings.”
  • character development
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Reviewers praise the character development for its impressive animation and design, highlighting the attention to detail that enhances the player character's personality. The overall atmosphere and style of the levels further contribute to a rich and immersive experience.

    • “The animation and character design are all very well done, with the player character's animation having small touches that add a bit more characterization than expected.”
    • “I really love the atmosphere and style of the levels and character design.”
