The gameplay has received mixed reviews, with many players criticizing the wall jump mechanic as awkward and frustrating, often leading to unintended deaths. While some appreciate the responsive controls and challenging nature of the game, others find the overall experience uninteresting and marred by poor level design and repetitive music. Despite its charming art and sound, the gameplay mechanics need significant polish to enhance the overall experience.
“The gameplay is incredibly responsive and it just feels really good when jumping and dodging the various traps and enemies in the game, and it's just tough enough that you want to keep coming back to try and get that perfect run!”
“The gameplay, while difficult, is very fun once you master it, though I think the development team went a little overboard with the instadeath spikes.”
“The gameplay is smooth and I like the way it looks.”
“Terrible gameplay and level design.”
“My biggest complaint is due to the bad wall jump mechanic.”
“It is beyond frustrating to control, and it is one of the main core mechanics of the game.”

The graphics of the game are generally praised for their charming hand-drawn art style and cute visuals, reminiscent of classic cartoons. However, there are inconsistencies in the art quality, with some models not fitting the overall aesthetic, and the game's performance, such as being locked to 35 fps, may deter some players. While the graphics contribute positively to the game's appeal, issues with controls and gameplay mechanics can detract from the overall experience.
“The game has a beautiful hand-drawn art style which I absolutely love; I like the way the animation is done for moves like swimming, swinging sword, running, wall jumping, etc.”
“The graphics are cool as it looks like a hand-drawn cartoon.”
“It's a fun platformer with its own unique art style.”
“The art style is not the same all the way through, so you will find some models that almost fit but not quite.”
“Pretty visuals for a garbage game.”
“Charming art style, but the controls are so damn clunky.”

The music in the game is generally well-received, with many praising its charm and ability to enhance the atmosphere, particularly with fitting Halloween vibes and jazzy elements. However, some players find it repetitive and occasionally mismatched with the game's mood, leading to a distraction from gameplay. Overall, while the soundtrack contributes positively to the experience, it may not always stand out due to gameplay mechanics and controls.
“I realize this was made by a solo developer, and honestly the art is fantastic, and the soundtrack is fitting for the cartoony Halloween vibes.”
“The music is great and adds intensity to different levels.”
“Skelattack has a jazzy soundtrack that is full of charm.”
“Music is repetitive, gameplay uninteresting, story virtually nonexistent.”
“The music’s decent, but to be honest, you’re too distracted to notice it much anyways.”
“This is only backed up by its music.”

Overall, the game offers limited replayability, primarily through speedruns or self-imposed challenges, but lacks achievements and substantial content to encourage multiple playthroughs. With a playtime of only 3-4 hours, many reviewers suggest waiting for a sale if replay value is a priority, as it falls short compared to other games in the same price range.
“There's some replayability, but it's mostly going to be in the form of speedruns or other self-imposed challenges outside the limitations of the game.”
“I compare it to other games in that price range that last a lot longer and have great replay value.”
“This game doesn't have much replay value after it's done, except for lore, I guess.”
“No achievements and very little replay value.”
“There isn't a lot of replayability here, so if the price is too steep for you for the 3-4 hours of playtime you get, then wait for a sale, but it is certainly worth checking out.”
“If you're looking for something with replay value, though, this isn't it.”

Overall, Skelattack is a solid game that will put you to the test as much as it will mesmerize you with story and visuals. It might be a bit much for some, but the story makes the journey worth the trouble.

A strange little thing, Skelattack seems to lack confidence in itself, wanting to be one of those hard-as-nails "masocore" platformers while not really committing to the tight design that defines that subgenre. As a result, it's a game that'll make you seethe with frustration not from deliberate and challenging level design, but from sloppily-constructed traps that seem to think such things are excused by a multitude of checkpoints. It's definitely not a disaster, but Skelattack leaves a lot to be desired.
