SILENT HILL: Townfall

Silent Hill: Townfall is a great continuation of the series, and what’s interesting is they are taking some big swings. They shift to a first-person perspective which in my opinion, makes the game way more immersive and intense when compared to the predecessor. The town of St Amelia is scary and beautifully made, plus being able to use a small CRTV in order to scan for enemies adds a lot of allure and intensity to every single location. However, the heavy focus on stealth and clunky combat might not appeal to everyone. I also died a few times, which forced me to replay sections with unskippable cutscenes, not to mention saving requires you to dial numbers at specific telephones, so it makes the system a tad clunky. Notably, there are some performance issues with the game at launch, too, especially if you have a lower-end rig. But overall, Silent Hill: Townfall manages to push the series forward with some intense ideas, great gameplay mechanics and a wonderful story. I am looking forward to the next iteration in the series, because Silent Hill F and Townfall were very good, and they both offer a different type of gameplay, to satisfy any horror fan. • optimization

10% positive mentions, 40% neutral mentions, 50% negative mentions

The game's optimization is widely criticized for frequent stuttering, frame drops, and occasional crashes, especially on certain hardware setups, with Unreal Engine 5-related performance issues being a common theme. While some players report smooth gameplay on high-end systems or after tweaks like disabling Nvidia Reflex, many find the performance problematic and hope for patches to improve stability and reduce microstutters. Overall, the game runs decently on powerful rigs but suffers from inconsistent optimization that detracts from the experience for a significant portion of players.

    • “I had no issues with performance throughout the game, had it on max settings at 1440p.”
    • “PC performance is fine, native 1440p with FSR4 native AA, ultra settings with hardware lumen RT enabled ran at locked 60fps for the vast majority of the game.”
    • “So far, the game is very well optimized, with superb graphics quality and no stutters so far.”
    • “I cannot emphasize enough how much I hate this game's optimization; I constantly get freezes whenever anything loads in. UE5 seems to load every asset within a single frame causing models to glitch out. Half my screen flashes black briefly and random crashes severely damage my GPU, killing every running application until reboot. It’s incomprehensible how this game released in this state. I want to like it but the performance issues are unbearable.”
    • “One of the worst optimized games I have ever played. Consistent stuttering everywhere, ridiculous CPU usage, and terrible optimization overall make the experience frustrating and diminish the game's quality significantly.”
    • “The stuttering is crazy bad, it ruins a decent game. As a lifelong Silent Hill fan, I’m seriously considering a refund. The performance issues are so severe that they overshadow what could have been a great experience.”
  • story

The story of the game receives mixed feedback, with many praising its atmospheric, immersive, and compelling narrative that successfully captures the essence of Silent Hill. However, some players find the storytelling overly obscure, heavy-handed, or predictable, and a few struggle with engagement due to unclear plot motivations or lack of character depth. Overall, it is considered intriguing and worth experiencing, especially for fans who appreciate cryptic, psychological horror tales, though it may not reach the narrative heights of earlier franchise entries.

    • “After completing this game with my runtime being 8 hours I can safely say this is one of those fun games you can pick up and run through; also the story is very, very good. The progression, story beats, and pacing are very satisfying.”
    • “Silent Hill: Townfall delivers a brilliantly unsettling first-person nightmare with a haunting mid-90s Scottish setting, clever retro puzzles, and a deeply atmospheric story, even if its stealth mechanics can occasionally frustrate.”
    • “The atmosphere, gameplay, puzzles, story, and just everything about this game is perfect.”
    • “I've completed my first playthrough in like 11 hours and still I have zero clue of the story.”
    • “The story supposedly follows the protagonist who wants to “put things right.” However, the conclusion I have reached is that Konami is the one who decided to “put things right” by delivering a couple of masterpieces, then ramming the franchise down an ancient Mexican toilet and stomping it until their legs sink clean through the bottom and into the abyss just to remind us how it felt when the franchise died.”
    • “The story is simultaneously attempting to be overly obscure and mysterious, yet has all the visual subtlety of being hit with a sledgehammer.”
  • atmosphere

The atmosphere of the game is widely praised for its immersive, eerie, and deeply unsettling qualities, capturing the classic Silent Hill vibe with excellent visuals, sound design, and mood-setting lighting. While some note performance issues and occasional stutters that detract slightly from immersion, the overall ambiance, music, and detailed environments create a tense, slow-burn horror experience that resonates strongly with both longtime fans and new players.

    • “The atmosphere is phenomenal; aided by great graphics and gorgeous lighting and textures.”
    • “Silent Hill: Townfall delivers a brilliantly unsettling first-person nightmare with a haunting mid-90s Scottish setting, clever retro puzzles, and a deeply atmospheric story, even if its stealth mechanics can occasionally frustrate.”
    • “Amelia is drenched in the gloomy atmosphere that I personally recognise from seaside towns in Britain, with everything from the building shapes to the overall layouts and signage being extremely accurate.”
    • “Atmosphere, tension and immersion are absolutely essential, and having the image freeze whenever something new is being loaded completely destroys that atmosphere for me.”
    • “Really bad audio desync and stutters that make it sound like someone is driving on gravel, which obviously destroys any atmosphere they're trying to build.”
    • “The atmosphere feels off, not the Silent Hill kind of off, but off like it couldn't quite hit the mark to make me feel like my heart was racing, anxiety spike and I needed to check around the corners.”

The gameplay of the new Silent Hill title emphasizes stealth and survival, incorporating a unique CRT scanning mechanic that adds tactical depth but can become repetitive. While the atmosphere, story, and puzzles receive praise, combat is often described as clunky and uninspired, and the heavy reliance on stealth can feel frustrating or sluggish to some players. Technical issues such as stuttering and optimization problems occasionally disrupt the experience, making the gameplay feel uneven despite its innovative elements.

    • “The CRTV mechanic is a fresh and interesting gameplay element that provides guidance without the generic waypoint or glowing trail systems, adding a new tactical layer to stealth and survival.”
    • “If you are a fan of Silent Hill, this game offers a much-needed change in gameplay, focusing on stealth and survival; the combat can often be avoided if you're savvy, encouraging strategic play rather than run-and-gun.”
    • “Silent Hill: Townfall delivers a brilliantly unsettling first-person nightmare with a haunting mid-90s Scottish setting, clever retro puzzles, and a deeply atmospheric story, even if its stealth mechanics can occasionally frustrate.”
    • “The gameplay feels nothing like Silent Hill.”
    • “The story had me intrigued which kept me going for much longer than I actually wanted to play but after the fourteenth reveal that I guessed at the very start of that game, mixed with the horrid gameplay that is little more than horror themed suicide drills, it finally managed to lose me.”
    • “Gameplay: introduces high-stakes stealth and survival elements, though clunky combat and rigid enemy detection can sometimes disrupt the dread.”
  • graphics

The game's graphics are widely praised for their stunning, realistic visuals and immersive atmosphere, often described as some of the best seen in recent games, especially with lighting and textures. While most players report smooth performance at high or ultra settings, some experience occasional stutters, freezes, and frame drops—issues commonly attributed to Unreal Engine 5 and varying hardware setups. Overall, the visuals significantly enhance the mood and tension, making the graphical quality a standout feature despite sporadic optimization hiccups.

    • “Some traversal stutter here and there but overall the game runs extremely well while being one of the most impressive games out from a graphical standpoint.”
    • “The biggest draw to the game is its graphics and detail to environments that feel immersive, helped with first person view.”
    • “Graphics are stunning; I don't think I have ever played a game with such good graphics.”
    • “After lowering the graphics, nothing changed.”
    • “- Graphics, considering how bad the game runs, don't look as good as they should.”
    • “Optimizing the settings, e.g., lower the graphics, lowering the frame rate, doesn't do anything because the bloody game still freezes!”
  • music

The game's music is widely praised for its eerie, atmospheric quality that effectively enhances tension and immersion, with many considering it a standout aspect alongside the visuals and sound design. While it doesn't replicate Akira Yamaoka's iconic style exactly, the new soundtrack by Anthony Scott Burns is appreciated for maintaining the Silent Hill mood, though some find certain tracks occasionally overused. Overall, the soundtrack is a key highlight that contributes significantly to the game's haunting atmosphere.

    • “The music is beautiful and the story is captivating, 100% recommended.”
    • “The atmosphere, level design, art design, sound design, and music are all top-notch.”
    • “The start of part 2 shocked me badly; the town is eerie yet beautiful, the otherworld is fantastic, and the soundtrack is incredible.”
    • “Players praise the music, but I hear no music.”
    • “Where is the music, guys?”
    • “Constant stuttering with an uninteresting story wrapped up with a painfully mid soundtrack.”
  • stability

The game suffers from frequent and severe stability issues, including crashes, prolonged freezes, and stutters that disrupt gameplay regardless of graphics settings. These problems are reportedly linked to poor optimization with Unreal Engine 5, causing frustration and making the game nearly unplayable for some users.

    • “There are some dips in cutscenes but that's not rare in modern gaming sadly. The game itself runs great and looks stunning.”
    • “During the first 20 minutes alone, I experienced a large number of severe stutters and brief freezes, some lasting close to a full second.”
    • “The game should be called Silent Hill: Crashfall because I cannot play for more than 15 minutes without a crash that either kicks me to desktop or just straight up freezes my PC.”
    • “Optimizing the settings, e.g., lowering the graphics, lowering the frame rate, doesn't do anything because the game still freezes!”

Grinding in Townfall is widely seen as tedious and menial, detracting from the game's overall tension and enjoyment. While some elements like sneaking remain engaging, many find the repetitive tasks and poorly executed stealth mechanics frustrating and monotonous.

    • “Townfall is on the cusp of being a great game that is padded by tedious menial busy work that takes all the tension out of the game.”
    • “Far more of a hide and seek game than it is a survival horror game, and a crappy and tedious one at that.”
    • “On the other hand the stealth and combat are miserable and gradually take things from tense to annoyingly tedious.”
