Orcs Must Die! Deathtrap

Regardless of the multiplayer woes I faced, having a small group that played together regularly kept the game fun and fresh. If you have a reliable friend or friends who can play with you, Orcs Must Die! Deathtrap is a very fun game. If not, it can still be fun for a solo player, but a lot of the magic from co-op, one of the major draws to the game, is completely lost.Orcs Must Die! Deathtrap is a lot of fun despite the massively overlooked quality-of-life features that are missing from the game. A few small updates could really put a shine on this otherwise flawed gem.

  • Engaging and satisfying core gameplay blending tower defense and third-person combat.
  • Robust roguelike elements with random map modifiers and upgrade choices add significant replayability.
  • Improved four-player cooperative multiplayer experience compared to previous series entries.
  • Large, open map designs and limited barricades reduce strategic trap placement and solo play enjoyment.
  • Lack of traditional campaign and endless modes diminishes sense of progression and content variety.
  • Performance issues, bugs, and connectivity problems cause frustration and lost progress.
  • gameplay
    558 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay of Orcs Must Die! Deathtrap blends the classic tower defense action with roguelite elements, offering fresh variety and high replayability through randomized modifiers and runs. While the core trap-setting and combat mechanics remain satisfying and familiar, some players find the new roguelite features, limited barricades, and lack of tutorial clarity detract from the experience, making it less accessible and more grind-heavy. Overall, the game is engaging and fun, especially in co-op, but certain design changes and RNG elements may not appeal to longtime fans seeking the traditional Orcs Must Die! gameplay.

    • “The gameplay is smooth, satisfying, and full of those classic Orcs Must Die moments where you chain together the perfect trap combo and just sit back, grinning like a smug war mage.”
    • “The rogue-lite mechanics add a layer of unpredictability that makes every run fresh and exciting.”
    • “It literally even uses the exact same code for the gameplay as it inherits the 4+ year long standing bugs.”
    • “Gameplay: with the way this one is set up, it gives a mostly unclear nature of how you are supposed to play the game (like loading the actual missions).”
    • “Absolutely terrible mechanic for playing standard mode with every choice you have to make for what map to play also gives you an insane debuff.”
    • “The gameplay loop went from using strategy and placement to create killboxes and keep the orcs from getting to the rift... to just placing whatever, wherever, since they'll make it to the rift anyway.”
  • story
    513 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game lacks a traditional story mode or campaign, replacing narrative progression with a roguelike structure centered on randomized missions and upgrades. This shift has left many players feeling the experience is less immersive and emotionally engaging, as there is minimal character development, lore, or world-building. While some appreciate the fresh roguelite approach and its replayability, the absence of a coherent story and guided progression is a significant drawback for fans of the previous titles' narrative-driven gameplay.

    • “The dynamic missions, diverse traps, and robust character progression system make for a deeply engaging and replayable experience.”
    • “I managed to complete my first ever run (3 missions back to back) and I've gotta say it was incredibly fun, challenging and rewarding.”
    • “Completed the first few missions solo, really fun.”
    • “No story mode: a campaign or narrative mode is completely absent.”
    • “This game probably needed more time to cook, as it launched missing features that feel like no-brainers, such as no saving for multiplayer games, no way to reroll thread options, limited map pool (I may be wrong but I think the game launched with 11? and that many maps in a roguelike where you can select from 3 maps after every mission means you see the same maps a lot), and limited map variety.”
    • “The campaign has been replaced by just a rogue-like system of mission after mission that you can gamble forward with skulls earned in previous missions to bet whether you survive the next.”
  • optimization
    156 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Optimization for the game is widely criticized, with many players reporting poor performance, frequent frame drops, stuttering, and crashes, even on high-end hardware. While some users experience acceptable or good performance, the consensus highlights significant issues especially during intense moments or higher difficulties, making the game feel unpolished and in need of further optimization patches.

    • “Graphics is great and it's optimized very well.”
    • “Performance-wise, the game runs smooth and I’ve barely seen any bugs.”
    • “Okay they did what I asked and optimized the game so now I can actually play it.”
    • “The performance is horrible compared to previous titles and it looks a lot worse than OMD3.”
    • “Unoptimized to a point where it's barely playable, and the graphics glitch on low settings.”
    • “Game is poorly optimized at the moment and handles like a UE5 demo, with terrible performance and constant crashes.”
  • graphics
    152 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics in the game are generally vibrant and colorful with a solid art style consistent with the series, but many users note that the visuals feel unpolished or a downgrade compared to previous entries, especially OMD3. Performance and optimization issues are common, with frequent crashes, frame rate drops, and graphical glitches reported, often requiring users to lower settings significantly or rely on DLSS. While the game's artistic direction and environments are appreciated, inconsistent quality and technical problems hinder the overall visual experience.

    • “Nice, ray traced graphics, fun progression.”
    • “The art style is vibrant, the environments are well-crafted, and everything just pops in a way that makes it easy to enjoy and strategize.”
    • “The graphics are beautiful, the animations are funny, and the gameplay is lots of fun.”
    • “This game has muddy textures, grainy shadows, blurry visuals, no footstep sound difference when you walk on water earth or stone floor, pixelated clouds, massive clipping with character models (Gabriella clips her shoulder armor when in trap construction mode), even the crosshair dot is not in the center.”
    • “The graphics are worse than part 3 which is five years older.”
    • “Unoptimized to a point where it's barely playable, and the graphics glitch on low settings.”
  • replayability
    123 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game introduces roguelike elements and randomized mechanics that significantly enhance replayability by offering varied runs, diverse character options, and evolving challenges. While some players find these new systems add depth and freshness beyond previous installments, others feel limited by fewer maps, certain design constraints, and a lack of endless modes, indicating room for improvement in sustaining long-term replay value. Overall, the integration of roguelite features and cooperative play marks a notable shift that largely increases replay potential, especially for those who enjoy adaptability and experimentation.

    • “Deathtrap brings all the chaotic fun we love from Orcs Must Die and cranks up the replayability with randomized map events that keep every round feeling fresh.”
    • “The variety of threads and characters means that even with a relatively low number of maps, this game is very replayable for people who will play many different characters and experiment with different trap builds.”
    • “The dynamic missions, diverse traps, and robust character progression system make for a deeply engaging and replayable experience.”
    • “There’s no real reason to switch up your character other than cosmetics or stats, and that hurts replayability.”
    • “The game itself does not compare to the previous parts 1-3; it lacks replay value, missing, for example, the endless mode that is present in all other parts.”
    • “My overall opinion of this game is good although it feels partially released and is missing replay value big time.”
  • humor
    85 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game retains the series' signature goofiness, witty voice lines, and amusing orc banter that fans love, often delivering laughs through character quips, enemy dialogue, and silly animations. While some new characters and writing efforts feel less charming or forced, the overall tone remains lighthearted and entertaining, especially in co-op play where funny moments and creative traps enhance the fun. However, some players note a reduced presence of story-driven humor and the absence of iconic characters like Max, slightly impacting the comedic depth compared to earlier titles.

    • “Part of what makes Orcs Must Die as a series is its general goofiness: its silly characters, self-deprecating meta-humor, and wild premise.”
    • “Yes, the writing style of characters in Deathtrap is the same as it ever was with every character having at least one or two lines that will always make me burst out laughing regardless of how many times I hear it, either due to the writing or how well a line has been performed.”
    • “The characters and traps are very diverse in abilities and with a sense of humor, it's fun to discover a build that works for you.”
    • “These kids are not funny.”
  • grinding
    81 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The grinding in the game is widely considered excessive and tedious, often requiring repetitive farming of the same maps and upgrades to progress, especially for tougher difficulties. While some players find the grind manageable or even enjoyable with friends, many feel it hampers pacing and variety, making later gameplay feel like a chore rather than fun. Although recent updates have slightly improved progression, the overall grind remains a significant downside for many fans.

    • “But it sucks for a veteran of the series to effectively be incapable of playing the game on a harder difficulty at first because you need to upgrade the traps and your abilities to DPS 10,000-hit-point enemies, leaving you grinding on the lowest difficulty until you can have the necessary upgrades.”
    • “Solo mode is just grinding the same levels over and over until you complete every quest and hit 100,000 kills.”
    • “Without unlocking a lot of expensive upgrades, I feel rather bottle-necked into just grinding skulls rather than exploring maps, load outs, and synergies.”
  • music
    57 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music is widely praised as a standout feature, with many describing the soundtrack as energetic, thematic, and metal-inspired, enhancing the game's atmosphere and excitement. Some users miss the more relaxing or varied tracks between waves or older soundtrack elements, while a few find it generic or less memorable. Overall, the music significantly contributes to the game's appeal and intensity.

    • “The soundtrack is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ fire!!!”
    • “I am deeply invested in this game; don't let my playtime fool you. This game has insane replayability which I absolutely love and extremely satisfying gameplay, and the soundtrack goes hard.”
    • “The only thing I feel is 10/10 here is the music; those guys killed it.”
    • “The lore and music are forgettable and do not add much to the overall atmosphere.”
    • “Music is mid, visuals are ok for the most part; nothing is standout or remarkable. Gameplay is very samey throughout each map due to the reliance on mazing and extremely limited options for success when trying to tunnel the mobs into a successful trap layout. The game is the definition of a 6-7/10 as a solo player; might be worth waiting for a sale.”
    • “Music is not great. I can enjoy some good bardcore metal on occasion, but this ain't it; it sounds like generic music you could get from a free stock site.”
  • stability
    39 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's stability is mixed, with many users experiencing frequent bugs, crashes, and glitches that can disrupt gameplay, especially in chaotic or multiplayer sessions. However, ongoing patches have improved performance and fixed several key issues, leading some players to report smooth, mostly bug-free experiences. Overall, stability remains a concern, particularly at launch, but continuous updates are gradually addressing these problems.

    • “99.9% bug free.”
    • “Technically the game runs great: no bugs, disconnects, or graphics problems for me running at ultra settings.”
    • “Runs great on my computer, no lag, no hiccups so far.”
    • “The game is extremely buggy and I had to restart several runs because orcs moved through walls or became stuck in grappling hooks where they could not be defeated, which was very frustrating.”
    • “Was fun but now the game is unplayable - just freezes on start and looks like no fix is coming, so it’s basically a 30 dollar paperweight now.”
    • “Buggy, keeps crashing, doesn't save between runs, unplayable at present.”
  • character development
    31 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Character development and character design receive largely negative feedback, with many users finding the designs uninspired, bland, and lacking depth or personality compared to previous entries. While a few acknowledge some endearing or well-written personalities, the overall consensus is that the visual and narrative character development falls short and detracts from the experience.

    • “If this does not sound like the play-style for you then worry not, because Deathtrap includes (on launch) 6 more heroes to play as with wildly different play-styles, and while most of them may not be my cup of tea they are at least fun new additions to the warmage roster who are actually pretty endearing personality wise & well written in the classic OMD style despite my initial reservations about their character designs.”
    • “The gameplay is a lot of fun, I like the rogue-like elements, the level and character design of the monsters is top notch.”
    • “The roguelite elements don't change things up enough either, mostly just being "wall traps do more damage", "ogres do more damage", etc. The character designs (both player and NPC) are good, and it's the best OMD has ever looked, but that's all this has going for it.”
    • “Whoever was responsible for character design and voice casting really dropped the ball here and ought to be fired.”
    • “Character design: the characters look terrible, uninspired and poorly done.”
    • “These character designs already told you something about their personalities, their abilities, etc. Deathtrap's characters (especially the human ones) unfortunately just don't.”
  • monetization
    11 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Monetization in the game is perceived by many as a cash grab with minimal effort, though some users argue it lacks microtransactions and pay-to-win elements, suggesting the developers remain genuinely invested in the series rather than focusing on aggressive monetization.

    • “No pesky microtransactions either.”
    • “The more you play, the stronger you get and the easier it gets. Maybe people forgot that the old way of unlocking isn't through microtransactions :)”
    • “Another amazing thing here is that this game is not pay to win and, as far as I know, doesn't have any microtransactions.”
    • “This isn’t a sequel or a bold new direction – it’s a lazy cash grab.”
    • “It seems like a cash grab with lackluster effort.”
    • “Cash grab that looks to have been outsourced to some 1st year game dev students or dumb AI.”
  • atmosphere
    5 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The atmosphere in *Orcs Must Die!* is relaxed and lighthearted, making it suitable for casual play, but it lacks strong worldbuilding, memorable lore, and engaging music. Enhancing the atmosphere with a compelling villain and darker tone could provide more depth and immersion.

    • “The atmosphere of Orcs Must Die! is engaging and fun.”
    • “The game doesn't take itself too seriously, which creates a relaxed atmosphere – ideal after a long day.”
    • “The lore and music are forgettable and do not add much to the overall atmosphere.”
    • “There feels like a lack of worldbuilding, dialogue, and atmosphere that makes it feel like you are doing something.”
  • emotional
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Users express strong frustration with the game's emotional impact, feeling let down by its lack of variety and engaging effects. The repetitive mechanics and absence of exciting buffs or cooldown reductions lead to a sense of boredom and disappointment rather than excitement or fulfillment.

    • “Whoever made steam vents activate through different floors should be arrested and charged with emotional torture.”
    • “There's so little variety it's heartbreaking.”
