  • story
    171 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's story is a mixed bag, with many players praising its intriguing premise, dark humor, and immersive atmosphere, while others criticize its pacing and unfinished quests due to its early access status. Despite some quests being incomplete and the main storyline feeling stalled at times, the environmental storytelling and character interactions are often highlighted as engaging elements that keep players invested. Overall, while the narrative shows promise and has moments of brilliance, it currently suffers from a lack of direction and completion, leaving players eager for future updates.

    • “The story and world are both superb; it's a reminder that indie games flourish because triple-A titles suck at both those things.”
    • “Obenseuer has a very immersive world and a well-crafted story.”

    • “The game isn't finished; if you get far enough, you'll eventually be prevented from progressing in the story as the game is still in active development, but there is plenty to do still.”
    • “Love the game, but it leaves you hanging. It sends you on a quest to get a passport so you can get to the other side and get stuff from rob-1n, but the quest is unfinished and you can't get the passport.”
  • grinding
    76 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The reviews indicate that the game features a significant amount of grinding, which can be both a point of frustration and a source of enjoyment for players. Many users find the grind necessary for progression, particularly in upgrading apartments and developing skills, but some feel it becomes tedious and monotonous over time. While the grinding aspect can enhance immersion and routine, it may deter those who prefer a more streamlined experience.

    • “You'll need a second life for grinding.”
    • “Currently a no for now, until the dev can figure out a better system for progression, as becoming 'wealthy' is very grindy and monotonous, and to have better indicators for your character's needs, so you're not constantly in your inventory tending to them.”
    • “The fun wears off after a while once you realize how boring and tedious it all is, especially with all the backtracking.”
    • “The game was grindy before the updates, but it's even more grindy now.”

    • “The visual and audio design, coupled with the intricate storytelling, create an atmosphere that's both immersive and captivating, drawing players deeper into the world of urban survival.”
    • “I was at first weirded out, not amused, kinda bothered and depressed about the atmosphere.”
    • “The atmosphere it creates is so overwhelming that I actually am stressed while exploring some of these rooms, and the devs know when they have you at a good tension because they always follow through with it.”
    • “Obensuer is meant to be a quarantine for the poor and mushroom addicted; despite this, the atmosphere is pretty light and besides for one mushroom-infested corpse, there's no sense of danger or sense that the entire population is living with or infected with a spreadable biological weapon.”
  • graphics
    44 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics of the game are characterized by a unique and charming art style that effectively captures a dark fantasy aesthetic, with environments meticulously designed for exploration. However, many users note that the game suffers from poor optimization, leading to performance issues regardless of settings. While some appreciate the lo-fi graphics and atmospheric design, others express disappointment, wishing for higher fidelity visuals akin to other titles like "Infra."

    • “The environments range from shadowy forests and ruined castles to eerie catacombs, each area meticulously designed to encourage exploration while reinforcing the game’s dark fantasy aesthetic.”
    • “Visually, Obenseuer combines dark, gothic art styles with smooth animations and detailed character models that bring the grim fantasy world to life.”
    • “The art style is gorgeous.”
    • “At least for me, games with this 'voxel' like graphics always cause extreme motion sickness.”
    • “This doesn't seem to change no matter what settings I run the game at, as I tried turning all my graphics settings to their lowest and resolution down to 1080x720 and got the same results.”
    • “Graphics need some rework because the lighting system goes haywire when you enter lit areas or pass by a lamppost.”
  • optimization
    32 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's optimization has received significant criticism, with many players reporting poor performance, frequent frame rate drops, and various bugs. While some users have experienced smooth gameplay, the overall consensus is that the game requires substantial optimization to enhance stability and performance, especially in certain areas. Developers are actively working on updates, but many reviewers currently cannot recommend the game due to its optimization issues.

    • “The upgrade system encourages experimentation and strategic planning, as allocating skill points and choosing gear upgrades can dramatically affect combat performance and survivability.”
    • “Performance-wise, I noticed some drops below 60 in the main square, but everywhere else it's smooth.”
    • “The game is still in development, and some things raise questions (bugs, optimization, game balance), but even at this stage, it’s captivating and immersive.”
    • “The performance is terrible.”
    • “Not really sure what the culprit is, but I can't really recommend this game unless you are either cool with poor performance or you have a powerful enough PC to push through it.”
    • “Extremely good idea bogged down by bugs, endless loading screens, impossibly poor performance and a very repetitive gameplay loop which may get better later but is initially criminally boring.”

    • “There is one quest where you try and get a copy of your bank card, and they make you do so much paperwork that it feels so real, it's just hilarious!”
    • “I really enjoy this game; the quest chains are funny and very quirky, and some of the lines said by the NPCs when you try to lockpick or steal in front of them are hilarious.”
  • stability
    16 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's stability has been a significant concern among users, with many reporting frequent bugs, glitches, and crashes, particularly on the Steam Deck. While some players note improvements following updates, the overall consensus is that the game remains unstable, especially in its early access state, necessitating the use of multiple save slots to avoid potential softlocks. Despite these issues, a few players have found the game enjoyable after recent overhauls, indicating a mixed experience regarding stability.

    • “The game runs great and I didn't notice any bugs.”
    • “I experienced no crashes or glitches during my playthrough.”
    • “The stability of the game is impressive; it runs smoothly without any interruptions.”
    • “In-game time still passes while you're in menus, and everything in menus takes about 10x as long to do on the Steam Deck, and there were a lot of glitches that prevented me from doing things entirely, so I would actually pretty much rate it as not compatible with the deck.”
    • “Main downsides now are it can be a bit crashy, and buggy with things duping or vanishing altogether.”
    • “The game is also buggy, so if you want to get it, make use of the multiple save slots because you can get softlocked anytime.”
