  • Engaging and satisfying parry-based combat with multiple unique weapons and fluid movement.
  • Beautiful anime-style art, animations, and well-designed character models with charming character designs.
  • Well-structured exploration and map design with many secrets, side quests, and an innovative time mechanic that adds depth to progression.
  • Platforming sections can be unusually difficult with some janky controls, inconsistent dash inputs, and imprecise collision detection, leading to player frustration.
  • Storytelling is scattered and often confusing, relying heavily on database lore entries with minimal voice acting and some localization issues.
  • Some bosses and late-game content require significant backtracking and tedious quest completion; the final platforming challenge is particularly disliked and may require the assist option to bypass.
  • story
    159 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story in this game is generally described as decent but not exceptional, with a somewhat generic and sometimes confusing narrative that requires players to actively read lore entries and side quests to fully grasp the plot and character backgrounds. While the main story is fairly short and straightforward, the side quests add depth and multiple endings, though quest tracking issues and reliance on text-heavy database entries can hinder engagement. Overall, the story serves as a solid backbone to the gameplay, appealing more to players interested in exploration and lore rather than a deeply immersive narrative experience.

    • “What stood out the most to me, though, was how interested I became in the story.”
    • “As for just the quality of the game it's really good, the music is great, the gameplay is solid and has a lot of unique mechanics/quirks like I just talked about, exploration is fun if a little repetitive but that's a metroidvania you're gonna be backtracking a lot I like that stuff in games you might not, the setting is really interesting too a lot of weird stuff mashed together but it never feels out of place in the setting and it's impressive they managed to make the world feel consistent with how wacky some of the enemies are, the story is well a metroidvania story you get a main objective (become carmel star) and you set out to accomplish it, there's some twists/reveals/plot more towards the end but the general plot is a pretty much a stereotypical shonen anime tournament arc almost where you have to gather votes from your peers by either beating them up and stealing them or earning them from sidequests and honestly it's decent not special but I enjoyed the story, the side quest stories are also well written and flesh out the world so they're great too which is good since they're required to get the true ending.”
    • “While the narrative will come off as fairly standard to people familiar with anime tropes, I have to admit that it worked really well within the context of the game’s metroidvania nature since it wove exploration and storytelling seamlessly by tying your very investigation of the titular academy to your overall purpose. This internal clock is actually tied to the title’s quest system, with certain NPCs and events only being available before or after a certain time-slot, which effectively makes you think tactically about the way in which you will approach navigation of the map when it comes to specific tasks you wish to accomplish, in order to make sure you get the timing right! In all honesty, this system sounds way more complicated than it actually is, since all that will be required of you will be some basic observation of the map overview in order to determine the right path to follow by counting how many rooms you'll have to pass through and deciding the ideal course by calculating which route will allow you to get to your goal before the given time limit, but I still felt like it added some welcome spice to quest completion.”
    • “If you read everything, the story is still a little far-fetched, but it kinda makes sense and goes pretty deep into the story of most characters... but again, you need to read to learn all that, you get almost nothing in regular gameplay and dialogues.”
    • “Unfortunately, the main story does suffer a bit from the storytelling choices made, as it is mostly conveyed through database entries.”
    • “During the early game, I was constantly confused but just shrugged it off, thinking, 'maybe it’s just a slice of life thing.' By mid-game, the plot points start to unravel, but... honestly, I was still confused. It’s not that the story is impossible to understand, but the information is just scattered everywhere.”
  • gameplay
    148 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay is praised for its fluid, responsive combat centered on a satisfying parry and unique fluid detonation mechanic, combined with three distinct weapons that add strategic depth. The innovative time mechanic adds an intriguing layer to exploration and questing, encouraging route planning without being overly punishing. While platforming and movement controls sometimes feel clunky or floaty, with occasional technical issues, overall the gameplay is engaging, mechanically rich, and a standout feature of this metroidvania-style game.

    • “For a first game these developers blow it out of the park, nice music, good mechanics, and they nail the combat feeling, very responsive controls as well, exploration is rewarding as it should be and it has the right amount of balance when it comes to difficulty.”
    • “Kotama doesn't just do what a metroidvania should pretty well, giving the player a cohesive world to explore in a non-linear fashion and to backtrack across as they unlock new abilities and weapons (with significant enemy variety throughout the different zones you traverse), but it also features some innovations of its own: a combat-centric gameplay loop that has players juggling three separate weapons, each with multiple skills and patterns, to parry, dodge and stagger enemies; and a time-loop system that ties into exploration and questing.”
    • “The game has some great combat that starts slow and turns fast once you get the other weapons and learn how to combo them, some really fun bosses that overall feel really good (aside from some issues with the last one), and a time mechanic that is really unique and serves backtracking well because it turns certain quests into mini puzzles that I think adds some nice depth to map exploration.”
    • “I disliked the temporal coils mechanic and parrying some mobs felt inconsistent.”
    • “The time mechanic - the game offers a very unique take on exploration with the temporal coils.”
    • “Mechanics: not great honestly, I'm disappointed to say that it feels very clunky a lot of the time, the dash is slow and doesn't feel like a dash, the double jump doesn't even feel like a good extension to your movement and the wall cling doesn't feel great either, and for how hard it feels to control your character the game's platforming sections will feel stupidly hard, not the normal necessary story ones but the optional ones feel pixel perfect gaps that you know you can fit through but the timing feels so off when you're trying to actually do it.”
  • graphics
    103 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's graphics feature a well-executed 2.5D anime-inspired art style with elegant, colorful visuals that complement its metroidvania gameplay, though its suggestive and "horny" themes may not appeal to everyone. Reviewers praise the fluid animations, detailed character designs, and fitting sci-fi aesthetic, while noting occasional issues like lack of ultrawide support or some questionable artwork. Overall, the visuals are considered beautiful and engaging, enhancing the gameplay experience despite some divisive stylistic choices.

    • “Visual 10/10 - Metroidvania but with elegant, classy anime aesthetics; map design brings pure excitement and agony.”
    • “Very well made Metroidvania with a balanced focus on combat and exploration. The art style is top notch; every single character has interesting and pretty designs. Kudos to the artist for amazing work.”
    • “The art style is especially appealing, with a nice quirky sci-fi aesthetic, retrofuturistic elements, and overall good graphics and art direction.”
    • “The graphics and art style are really bland to look at.”
    • “It is a bit disappointing that the game does not offer native ultrawide support. You can force it (on KDE at least) by utilizing special window properties and resizing the window to your resolution (e.g., 3440x1440) and then hide the title bar. The game will actually display in 21:9 this way and is fully playable; however, you will encounter some broken graphic effects sometimes like overlays or edges of maps.”
    • “Occasionally, the visuals make it very difficult to tell what moves enemies are telegraphing, and the lack of any kind of voice work feels like a glaring omission.”
  • music
    60 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's music is widely praised for its powerful, fitting sci-fi aesthetic and memorable boss themes, often described as elegant, chill, and catchy. While some find the soundtrack more ambient and subtle than standout, most agree it complements the atmosphere and enhances the gameplay experience. Overall, the music is considered a strong, enjoyable facet of the game, with particularly notable tracks during boss fights and key areas.

    • “Music is excellent, not too overstated but captures the sci-fi aesthetic well.”
    • “The ost and music were really amazing and satisfying to provide you with an enjoyable gaming session, hats off to the devs for this.”
    • “Music is chill and quite catchy — especially the main menu music, the catchy track played on the Arcadia, and the super snappy track that plays in the final areas.”
    • “The one negative I can give is the music.”
    • “The soundtrack could be better.”
    • “The music isn't anything to write about, in my opinion.”
  • character development
    33 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game features imaginative and well-executed character designs that are generally praised for their quality and vibrancy, though they lean heavily into fanservice and occasional overtly sexualized imagery, which may divide players. While visually appealing and enhancing the game's style, the character development itself is viewed as limited or minimal, with some players wishing for deeper narrative growth or progression. Overall, fans of the genre who appreciate anime-inspired aesthetics will find the character designs a strong point, despite mixed feelings on their maturity and impact.

    • “Firstly, the character design is absolutely fantastic.”
    • “The music, visuals, stage design, combat, character design, everything is so fluid and fun.”
    • “Lastly, I really like the character designs and the fact that the sprite and model both change and get damaged as you lose health.”
    • “There’s some character development I think needed to implement.”
    • “Why not make the new game plus (etc.) that Kotoma have her own character development?”
    • “The character designs are definitely fanservice-laden, but that alone can't elevate this from being a middling experience.”
  • optimization
    9 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Optimization is generally strong, with smooth performance even on older PCs and decent functionality on the Steam Deck. However, some users report occasional FPS stuttering, control lag, and noticeable loading delays between rooms and during fast travel. Overall, the game is well-optimized but has minor performance hiccups in specific areas.

    • “Performance runs very well on my old PC, smooth and well optimized, even on low settings, you can't complain.”
    • “Performance has also been great on my end.”
    • “Well written, well designed, stable, and properly optimized.”
    • “Performance issues during the first boss fight.”
    • “The game has some hiccups in terms of FPS stuttering and controls lagging.”
    • “There are optimization issues with loading between rooms, causing a delay of about a second, and fast traveling back to the main hub can take multiple seconds with visible loading times.”
  • grinding
    9 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Grinding in the game is often seen as tedious and repetitive, with side quests and enemy farming feeling like unnecessary padding that can detract from the overall experience. Difficult platforming sections and mandatory retries add to the frustration, especially when key battles require repeated attempts without shortcuts. While some side content remains enjoyable, the overall grinding and repetitive mechanics may dampen the game's replay value.

    • “To reach the final area and fight the final boss, you have to complete a bunch of tedious and mostly uninteresting side quests.”
    • “It just feels very weird and ultimately would lead to grinding enemies to be able to heal.”
    • “This can get tedious quickly, especially since nothing really changes gameplay-wise with the time changes, so it feels like meaningless padding.”
  • humor
    7 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game is described as cute and funny, with moments that elicit genuine laughter, especially through character interactions and playful in-game surprises. Its lighthearted tone complements the art style and enhances the overall charm without overshadowing gameplay.

    • “Good metroidvania, cute and funny art style, and not too long nor too short of a game when playing to its fullest.”
    • “Exploration is very good as well, as each of the areas have their own distinct theme and plenty of hidden things and secrets, one in particular made me do a double take and burst out laughing (here's looking at you, the room after the most frustrating platforming challenge I've ever had the pleasure of being able to skip).”
    • “Cute and funny.”
  • emotional
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The emotional aspect of the game evokes a sense of growing vulnerability as players progress, with character mumbling providing subtle emotional context. However, the overall experience may be affected by the complex controls, which are best enjoyed with a high-quality pro controller to fully engage with the game's emotional intensity.

    • “Meaning, all characters mumble nonsenses but give context to the emotions that they convey.”
    • “But all this game made me feel like I was getting weaker the further I progressed.”
  • atmosphere
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The atmosphere is generally pleasant, enhanced by very good, often relaxing music that fits well with the zones and overall setting.

    • “The music for the most part felt appropriate and fun for the zones and atmosphere.”
    • “On the positive side, the music is very good and often relaxing and the overall atmosphere is pleasant.”
  • stability
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's stability has significantly improved since release, particularly with platforming issues being fixed, making earlier reports of bugs largely outdated. However, some minor glitches, mistranslations, and bugs still persist and should be addressed in future updates.

    • “Other than this is a handful of mistranslations, glitches, and bugs issue that should be tackled sooner or later.”
