I, Zombie feels a lot like a flash game from sites such as Newgrounds, and expecting that level of quality will net you a fun and short experience. However, that is the extent the game has to offer.
In "I, Zombie," you lead a zombie horde on a mission to infect all humans on the map, turning them into zombies to help with your conquest. You can command your horde to attack enemies, follow you, or wait for orders, and each scenario requires strategic planning to succeed. The game features an in-game level editor and offers a fresh take on the zombie genre by letting you play as the zombie leader.

The gameplay of "I, Zombie" is characterized by its simple mechanics that blend light strategy and puzzle elements, allowing players to control zombie hordes to infect humans. While some find the gameplay fun and engaging, many criticize it for being repetitive, lacking depth, and suffering from poor controls and frustrating mechanics. Overall, the game offers a short experience that may appeal to casual players but can become tedious for those seeking more complexity.
“I, Zombie is a unique game about infecting every human on the level, and it's constantly switching between strategy/puzzle gameplay (when you're alone trying to get more zombies in your army), and something that feels more like a hectic meat grinder (after you bolster your ranks).”
“A fine little game, the gameplay here is a mix of sometimes stealth and a light real-time strategy; you have to infect the survivors and control them to kill the soldiers and finish the level. It has community-related stuff too; you can create and share your own levels or play other people's creations. While the base game is short, you can finish it in an hour; it's pretty fun to play, recommended.”
“The gameplay is pretty simple - you start off as a lone zombie who has to infect everyone in the level, and each level basically requires you to work out which groups of civilians or soldiers you should attack in what order, and with what timing on their patrol route in order to avoid getting your brains blasted out before you get to them.”
“Boring gameplay and crashes frequently.”
“Poor controls and boring gameplay make this not a good game.”
“Simple, boring and frustrated gameplay, avoid.”

The music in the game receives mixed reviews, with some players finding it catchy and enjoyable, while others describe it as repetitive and basic. Many appreciate the light-hearted and fun nature of the soundtrack, which complements the game's visuals, though some express concerns about its potential to become annoying over extended play. Overall, the music is seen as a highlight for many, contributing positively to the game's atmosphere despite its simplicity.
“I loved the music; frankly, it's worth the price simply for the five tracks that come with it, short as they are.”
“The music is absolutely great, it is catchy, although repetitive, you don't get tired of playing it, though the short levels you'll be going through.”
“Music makes or breaks games for me, so to find a mixed and highly more-ish soundtrack in something that cost 39p is great.”
“The songs are repetitive and annoying.”
“They are pretty short, maybe taking half a minute maximum with pretty boring music.”
“The art is awesome, but I could see the music becoming annoying if I had to play it too much longer.”

“The colourful rounded art style gives way to an oddly cheerful zombie apocalypse.”
“With simple yet effective visuals and sound, decent controls, and a heavy bend towards simple strategy, there’s enough here for veteran and casual gamers alike.”

The game's story is minimal, primarily revolving around the player's mission to infect humans and avoid being killed, with a focus on tactical gameplay rather than a deep narrative. While some players appreciate the interesting twist on the zombie genre and the challenge of the missions, others criticize the lack of a substantial plot and limited replayability. Overall, the experience is described as fun and engaging for a short duration, but not offering extensive storytelling or depth.
“Interesting twist on the zombie story.”
“Of course you're not going to get hours and hours of in-depth gameplay and extensive plot lines for that price, but you do get more than I expected.”
“There are twenty levels (plus a training mission) to work through, and particularly the last half of them tend to be interesting and may take a while to figure out a good plan of attack, or get the timing right.”
“There's no story, open-world with peculiar decorations and lore pieces, or something more complex, like different gameplay mechanics for different occasions, as it was in Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse.”
“The description is a bit deceptive as it suggests there is some tactical variability, but the game is really just a puzzle game with a limited window for success (and therefore variation) and hides the definitions for most 'success' until a mission is over.”
“No real replayability and relatively few missions, and community offerings (maps) seem to be poor quality.”

The game's replayability is a mixed bag; while some players find it infinitely replayable due to community-created content and achievements, many others criticize it for having limited replay value after completing the few available levels. The consensus suggests that once players master the levels, there is little incentive to return, although some minor replayability exists in attempting to achieve faster completion times or perfect scores. Overall, the game may appeal to those who enjoy challenges but lacks depth for long-term engagement.
“It also has an in-game level editor and community-made maps to extend the game's longevity and replayability, though I haven't tried that yet to know how well developed that is.”
“I won't be though, it's very replayable, not something you'll need to 'relearn' how to play if you've been away a while and like many classics, simple and frustrating all at the same time.”
“There's only 20 levels, but there's lots of replay value if you want to get 3 stars on each.”
“No real replayability and relatively few missions, and community offerings (maps) seem to be poor quality.”
“No replay value and after 30 levels the game is over.”
“There is generally only one way to complete a level and therefore not much replay value.”

The reviews highlight a mixed experience with grinding in the game; while some players find it manageable and not overly demanding, others describe it as tedious and frustrating, particularly due to level design issues and the inability to skip levels. This leads to prolonged periods of repetitive gameplay that can detract from the overall enjoyment.
“It's slow, boring, tedious, and feels like a free game that you should be able to get on your iPhone.”
“Getting stuck on invisible bumps on a seemingly linear object, soldiers shooting although you should be too far away for them to see you, soldiers concentrating fire on a target that should not be their first priority anymore (due to others being closer) and other little nuggets of joy make this a tedious exercise.”
“Worse, you are not allowed to skip levels so you might spend minutes grinding non-stop in completing the levels.”

Infect or die.

The overall experience I had with I, Zombie was a lackluster one. The gameplay was great mechanically, but the art, sound, and challenge were lacking anything that made this experience a memorable one. There were only a couple stages where I felt a challenge, and those few puzzles didn’t give me a sense of accomplishment that was strong enough to make me want to stick around.
