Guild Wars 2

This is one of the most amazing MMOs I have ever played, especially considering the fact that its free-to-play. ArenaNet has not only delivered on what they promised, but also surpassed my expectations.

  • story
    3,779 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Guild Wars 2 features a vast, voice-acted personal story that varies by race and character choices, with an evolving main plot enriched by numerous expansions and "living world" updates, offering hundreds of hours of content. While the base game story starts slowly and can be uneven with some tedious, repetitive quests and occasional bugs, expansions generally improve narrative quality and gameplay, making the overall story engaging and immersive for many players. However, some find the story pacing inconsistent and paywalling of key story content frustrating, and the mandatory grinding between story chapters can detract from the experience.

    • “The story of Guild Wars 2 is expansive, adapting to player choice with a shocking amount of depth in fully voice-acted dialogue sequences.”
    • “Guild Wars 2 personal story (free, just press play above). Living story season 1 - free (depending on how soon you are reading this, it may still be in progress of re-release the last few chapters). Living story season 2 - lead-up to expansion 1, Heart of Thorns - helps make the Heart of Thorns make sense. Living story season 3 - separate story that leads to the motivation behind Path of Fire, just stunningly brilliant storytelling and a must play. Living story season 4 - major plot points, great moments, finishes the Path of Fire storyline. Cantha (expansion) - if you make it here in the story, you are here to stay as you would have experienced the above - you will buy it and love it.”
    • “The core story was okay at best but it seems to really pick up in the expansions at least so far as well as the difficulty. The story is engaging and often times funny enough to keep you from skipping every cut-scene. Fully voice-acted epic story with engaging instanced PvE content - dungeons, scaling dungeons (fractals with 100 levels), strike missions (mini raids), and raids.”
    • “The story quests at level 10, 20, 30 are based on your choices in creation, but the options are meaningless because you end up in the same place doing the same things no matter what. Plus, many quests are still broken from as far back as 2013-14, forcing repeated restarts to get the correct NPCs, items, and enemies to spawn.”
    • “The main story and open world is bland and feels artificially drawn out by jumps in level requirements. Many story events are trivial side-plots, and much of the content involves mind-numbing repetitive kill and fetch quests with minimal narrative context. Unskippable dialogue during story missions makes progression tedious, leading to frustration and disengagement.”
    • “The story missions are bugged beyond repair, including soft locks and endless crashes causing players to repeat long segments multiple times. The narrative feels disjointed with major gaps between expansions filled by paid living world episodes, forcing players to pay exorbitantly to experience the story coherently. Additionally, some story fights are over-tuned or designed to waste player time.”
  • gameplay
    1,400 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Guild Wars 2 offers dynamic, skill-based gameplay with fluid, action-oriented combat and a unique blend of tab-targeting and active mechanics, including dodging and positional awareness. Its horizontal progression system emphasizes player skill over gear grind, providing diverse class customization, impactful mount mechanics, and extensive content that supports both casual and hardcore playstyles. While some find certain story missions or endgame encounters mechanically repetitive or janky, the cooperative world events, varied PvE and PvP modes, and continuous expansions deliver engaging, evolving gameplay that respects players’ time and fosters a welcoming community.

    • “Guild wars 2 strikes a perfect balance between accessible gameplay and complex, rewarding systems, making it one of the best mmorpgs out there today.”
    • “With 99% of the games abilities able to be used while on the move, the introduction of a dodge mechanic to grant i-frames, and with the most powerful spells being aoe abilities that have to be aimed, gw2 really is the gold standard for action combat, and should be the bare minimum for mmos going forward.”
    • “Each expansion and living world season brings new material (mechanics, maps, professions, mounts) that improves the gameplay experience.”
    • “The gameplay has essentially devolved into stacking and spamming to win, ignoring many mechanics because you can just heal through them.”
    • “The story was always nice, same with the different NPCs and mobs, but the gameplay seems like such a downgrade. At this point, I stopped bothering with the game since it was just frustrating trying to do anything.”
    • “The base gameplay is just not fun.”
  • graphics
    948 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Guild Wars 2 features a distinctive watercolor-inspired art style that has aged gracefully over more than a decade, delivering beautiful, immersive, and colorful visuals despite showing some dated textures and models, especially in older zones. While the graphics may not match modern AAA standards and can be demanding on some systems, the strong art direction, varied environments, and detailed animations keep the world visually appealing and vibrant for many players. Overall, its graphics are praised for their uniqueness and charm, though some users express a desire for a full graphical overhaul to modernize the experience.

    • “The art style is spot-on and especially after starting the first DLC, the graphics and style just get better and better.”
    • “Tyria as a world is gorgeous; the painterly art style and recent engine improvements mean it holds up graphically even 14 years after launch.”
    • “The graphics are beautifully designed and the open world invites you to explore.”
    • “Graphically, even back when it came out, the game was mediocre at best.”
    • “Graphics are pretty outdated and performance can be quite shockingly terrible with them.”
    • “The textures and graphics seem to be stuck in low resolution ugliness and the rest of the game shows its age in various ways.”
  • grinding
    542 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Grinding in Guild Wars 2 is often described as a mixed experience: while the game features less oppressive and mandatory grinding than many MMOs due to its horizontal progression and flexible playstyle, endgame content, legendary gear crafting, and some mount unlocks can involve long, time-consuming, and repetitive farming that may feel tedious to some players. However, many appreciate that grinding is mostly optional, varied, often rewarding, and can be done at one's own pace without locking players out of content, making it more accessible and less frustrating for casual players compared to traditional gear treadmill MMOs. Overall, the grind exists but is generally manageable and balanced with engaging activities, though it can become overwhelming for those aiming to achieve all high-end goals or cosmetics.

    • “The grind and loot mechanics and crafting are all fun and not very tedious, which is a big reason why I prefer this game over other MMOs.”
    • “This game doesn't have an endless gear treadmill, no grinding for bigger numbers; if your gear was the best 5 years ago, it's still the best today.”
    • “There's lots of content, beautiful environment, helpful players, quests until you become old and retire, and the endgame is basically customizing your character until you reach fashion wars™ status – virtually no grinding for the ultimate gear as even the cheapest armor and weapons will let you complete 95% of the game without having grinded a single time.”
    • “It is especially feels bad, when you're slightly enjoying the game, but the game is so grindy, and when you see all these high level players running around, you just don't see yourself grinding that long to actually get to in-game content.”
    • “The end game, i think, is mostly about chilling, walking simulator, talk to people, doing group events, and farming for gold to buy gems.”
    • “The endgame is grinding ugly legendaries, grinding gold, playing in the hamster wheel of wvw or doing the same raids and strikes over and over forever.”
  • monetization
    223 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's monetization is a mixed model combining buy-to-play expansions with extensive cosmetic and convenience microtransactions that are generally not pay-to-win. While the base game is free and expansions are one-time purchases without subscriptions, many users criticize aggressive microtransactions for inventory space, quality-of-life features, and frequent cash-shop pushes that can feel predatory or manipulative. Overall, it is considered fairer and less intrusive than many contemporary MMOs, but the reliance on microtransactions and DLC pricing can be overwhelming and off-putting to new and returning players.

    • “Premium currency can be obtained through gameplay - while the game monetization pushes people to spend real money for cosmetics and quality of life upgrades, it is possible to buy most things with in-game currency.”
    • “The game is not pay to win and does not require a subscription fee; compared to some other MMOs, it feels somewhat less slimy in monetization and gambling aspects.”
    • “The monetization system isn't bad either, no subscriptions or battle passes, just one-time purchase DLC that aren't needed to experience the entire base game.”
    • “Inventory monetization is probably the worst part with bag slots being per character rather than per account purchases, then there are bank slots, shared inventory slots, material storage, etc. They nickel and dime you on inventory management which becomes a larger issue with each new update adding new stuff to store.”
    • “The final straw was that my buddy paid for a little DLC and was given a max level character and all the gear for it... so basically you can pay to get a maxed out character and put no effort in... I was convinced that this is nothing but a cash grab, and that just confirmed it... what an atrocity this game is...”
    • “While also still keeping it realistic in terms of a monetization standpoint. But the microtransactions in Guild Wars 2 are too extreme; even if I want to change my gear's appearance once in a while, it's going to cost me. There are some exploration rewards, but using a new character to grind it via map exploration is a chore we should never have to do. Compared to other games like Warframe (with cheaper microtransactions and discounts), Guild Wars 2's buy-and-play-forever model is too good to be true, so what's the catch?”
  • music
    210 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game is widely praised for its beautiful, immersive, and atmospheric qualities, with many noting the iconic and nostalgic soundtrack composed initially by Jeremy Soule and later by other composers. It significantly enhances the game's exploration and emotional engagement, often described as one of the best video game scores, despite some subjective opinions finding it generic. Overall, the soundtrack, alongside sound design and voice acting, plays a crucial role in creating a captivating and memorable world experience.

    • “The music is beautiful, one of the best scores I have heard so far.”
    • “The game's stunning environments, combined with its immersive sound design and stirring musical score, create a sense of immersion and wonder that few other MMOs can match.”
    • “The soundtrack, originally composed by Jeremy Soule, then taken over by Maclaine Diemer and Stan Lepard, is incredible.”
    • “This is a very subjective matter, but I think the overall soundtrack of this game is very "meh." Rarely do I like the music; if I had to describe it, I find it very generic and just "okay." Jeremy Soule, who is known for the soundtracks of The Elder Scrolls, has created a soundtrack which I would describe in the following way.”
    • “The story and music is uninspiring and bland to me, so the only sort of investment I would put into the game is if I were to grind mindlessly.”
    • “The small amount of music they added is a bit flawed, in my opinion, and can be annoying when it's injected in, especially for End of Dragons.”
  • optimization
    118 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Optimization in the game is mixed, with improvements from DX11 integration but persistent issues in crowded or large-scale events causing significant performance drops, especially on modern multi-core CPUs. Many users report needing to lower graphics settings and character model limits to achieve smoother gameplay, while others praise it for running well on lower-end hardware. Overall, the outdated engine and heavy CPU reliance result in suboptimal performance that could benefit from further optimization.

    • “The standalone client delivers better stability, fewer launch and update frustrations, and generally smoother performance, allowing you to hit peak performance more often.”
    • “Moreover, the game's performance optimization is commendable, ensuring smooth gameplay even on older hardware.”
    • “A great game, with beautiful performance even on a computer with low configuration; performance is solid and the recent DirectX 11 updates have significantly improved it.”
    • “From my own experience, a typical HDD might leave you with performance issues such as black screen and long loading times.”
    • “Poor performance with high-end hardware due to the game's older engine and how it handles character models and effects.”
    • “While it runs well on older systems, its dated reliance on single-threaded performance leads to frustrating experiences on modern hardware. This disparity often necessitates overspending on CPU specs to ensure optimal performance, detracting from potential GPU investments. This is particularly evident in demanding areas or during large-scale events, highlighting the need for a ground-up overhaul and optimization.”
  • humor
    78 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game’s humor is generally appreciated for its witty NPC dialogue, amusing character interactions, and funny in-world events, adding charm and lightheartedness to exploration and quests. While the main story and voice acting can be awkward or unintentionally funny at times, many players enjoy the comedic moments and hidden easter eggs that enrich the experience. However, humor is mixed by some frustrations with community behavior and certain game elements, though overall it offers a blend of genuine and quirky comedy.

    • “If you're tired of the usual serious-faced fantasy worlds, prepare to have your funny bone tickled and your expectations hilariously shattered.”
    • “From the charismatic norn who thinks he's a stand-up comedian to the asura genius who accidentally turned her lab assistant into a quaggan – you'll be laughing so hard you might miss the next quest marker!”
    • “The conversations NPCs have with each other as you walk past them make the world lived in and some conversations are funny and the game doesn't take itself too seriously.”
  • emotional
    69 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Guild Wars 2 evokes a strong emotional connection mainly through its immersive world, well-developed personal storylines, and a truly wholesome, supportive community that enhances the overall experience. While some find the main story and side characters lacking emotional depth, key moments, world events, and the dynamic, cooperative gameplay foster genuine attachment and nostalgia. The game’s blend of cinematic storytelling, rich content, and a welcoming playerbase creates a gratifying and often heartwarming emotional journey.

    • “These storylines are fully voiced and cinematic, placing greater emphasis on character development and emotional stakes than many MMOs attempt.”
    • “By living world season 4, you have phenomenal cinematography and a jaw-dropping continuation to the ongoing story that invokes emotional attachment for those who care for it.”
    • “Living world season 4's ending made me actually shed a tear, and I just preordered the current expansion, which is the first preorder I ever did in my life.”
    • “Really boring story.”
    • “Great game when you play it less than 200 hours, a boring storyline slightly better than WoW Shadowlands.”
    • “After that the game got more annoying... unskippable boring story bits, things which should just have been a cutscene.”
  • stability
    55 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Guild Wars 2's stability is mixed, with many reviewers reporting persistent bugs, glitches, freezes, and performance issues that have lingered for years, sometimes severely impacting gameplay. However, some players note improved optimization on modern systems and platforms like Steam Deck and Linux, describing it as generally smooth and stable despite occasional minor bugs. Overall, the game suffers from longstanding technical problems but still runs well for many users on up-to-date hardware.

    • “Solid bug-free performance.”
    • “Well made and pretty much bug free.”
    • “The game runs great on Steam Deck, even when facing a world boss with 50 people on screen throwing spells.”
    • “Lots of buggy stuff still happening that hasn't been fixed since the game's original launch. Insane grinds for simple things like the flying mount, Skyscale, is absolutely atrocious and a giant middle finger to the players.”
    • “Hot garbage buggy mess; almost half of the quests in the game have a game breaking bug.”
    • “Too many glitches and programmers only want to create new content and not fix issues that have existed for 10 years.”
  • atmosphere
    43 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's atmosphere is widely praised for its rich world-building, evocative soundtrack, and immersive visuals, creating a believable and captivating environment that encourages exploration and cooperation. Friendly player interactions and a cooperative design foster a welcoming and enjoyable community vibe. While some endgame content may see a dip in atmosphere quality, the overall experience remains engaging, scenic, and full of ambiance.

    • “Character animations and skill effects emphasize clarity and spectacle without overwhelming the screen, while the soundtrack and ambient audio contribute significantly to the game’s atmosphere.”
    • “Towns like Divinity's Reach and Lion's Arch, and areas like Queensdale or the starting location of the Sylvari, are full of ambience and atmosphere with well-designed constructions.”
    • “Paired with an evocative soundtrack and consistently strong voice work, the game’s atmosphere draws you in and holds you there.”
    • “Even fractals (an endgame content you can do) sometimes don't have the best atmosphere, at least in higher fractal levels.”
    • “First, I see that you must try the game and see if you like the atmosphere.”
    • “I advise playing the free demo until you hit 80 and end the base story to check whether or not you like how the game handles, and its atmosphere.”
  • replayability
    37 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game offers extensive replayability through diverse classes, races with unique storylines, and multiple gameplay modes like dungeons, raids, PvP, and seasonal events. Its flexible playstyles, evolving personal stories, and no subscription fees contribute to a rewarding experience that keeps players engaged over the long term. Overall, it is praised as one of the most replayable MMOs available, with content that remains fresh and enjoyable across many playthroughs.

    • “The 9 classes offer a ton of replayability, and can be tweaked endlessly to suit your playstyle.”
    • “The gameplay is great and feels just right and not too World of Warcraft-like if WoW isn't your thing. Every race in the game has its own personal story that you have some shape over, which comes up every 10 levels progressed (10, 20, 30, etc.) and adds an insane amount of replay value and options.”
    • “There are dungeons, raids, world bosses, fractals (dungeon/raid hybrid), seasonal storylines (re-playable), seasonal holiday events, and the most fun PvP and WvW I've ever had in a game, and I typically hate PvP.”
    • “Not a lot of replayability.”
    • “Also, everything to make the game more playable is locked behind a DLC (mounts/marketplace).”
    • “When even the daily rewards system doesn't require you to play daily to get the rewards ... great game to return to anytime, I just hope that it will be here playable for another 12 years since I'm playing it on and off for like 1 month each year.”
  • character development
    31 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Character development in the game receives mixed feedback, with many praising the rich customization options, unique character builds, and emotional storytelling that surpass typical MMOs. However, some users find the development basic, generic, or lacking depth compared to other games, though the world design and gameplay often compensate for these shortcomings. Overall, character design and progression are highlights, but narrative and emotional engagement vary among players.

    • “These storylines are fully voiced and cinematic, placing greater emphasis on character development and emotional stakes than many MMOs attempt.”
    • “Character development is great, funny, fleshed out and unfolds as you progress in the game.”
    • “My advice: play through till you get a feel for character development, there is a lot more there than at first meets the eye.”
    • “Other stuff (story mission fights, character design and writing) are some of the worst I have ever seen, D or F.”
    • “90 minutes to download the game after installing on Steam to be absolutely disappointed by bad graphics, garbage character design and a story that is so generic it couldn't hook me for more than 6 minutes.”
    • “Character development is minimal.”
