Cast of the Seven Godsends: Redux

With random difficulty spikes, strange controls, and almost mandatory hidden power-ups constantly halting my progress through the poorly translated story, I didn't see much reason to keep playing Cast of the Seven Godsends: Redux. I also don't see much reason for anyone else to play it either.

Many players appreciate the visual effects and character designs, but some find the graphics cluttered and difficult to navigate, leading to frustration during gameplay. Overall, the visuals are seen as a highlight for some, but a significant drawback for others, impacting the overall experience.

    • “The graphics are a bit too amateurish to be likable in my opinion and the level/boss design has many flaws.”
  • gameplay
    27 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay is a blend of nostalgic design and modern refinement, heavily inspired by classic titles like Ghosts 'n Goblins, featuring punishing difficulty that can be exhilarating for some players but exhausting for others. While the game offers a variety of mechanics and visual styles across its worlds, it suffers from clunky controls and repetitive boss mechanics, leading to mixed reviews on its overall enjoyment. Despite its rough edges, the game is praised for its solid mechanics and replayability, appealing to fans of retro arcade shooters.

    • “It captures the essence of what made classic arcade and console action titles so memorable—tight mechanics, beautiful pixel art, and the thrill of conquering near-impossible odds.”
    • “Solid and challenging gameplay with a lot of variety and good replayability for a great love letter to the best run'n'gun games of the 80s-90s.”
    • “The gameplay is straightforward but punishing.”

    14 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game is generally praised for its dynamic and bombastic soundtrack, which effectively complements the retro aesthetic and arcade energy, reminiscent of 90s games. • “The soundtrack is really good, especially in the later levels.”
    • “Music is good, and very reminiscent of the older 90's arcade games, adding to the retro atmosphere of the game.”
    • “The music track was short and looping quite a bit, and the sound effects were not terribly satisfying.”
    • “It's fine, the music is okay, but there's always a lot going on at all times, and in some levels, it can be quite a sensory overload for a few seconds.”
    • “The music is annoying.”
  • story
    10 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story centers on a classic narrative of a father-king rescuing his kidnapped child from an evil emperor, but it is largely minimal and conveyed through brief cutscenes and text, which may disappoint players seeking a deeper narrative. While some find the premise engaging, others criticize it as lacking substance, with many players feeling that the story does not significantly enhance the gameplay experience. Overall, the focus on action over storytelling leaves the narrative feeling serviceable but not particularly memorable.

    • “The story follows a familiar but mythic premise—a grieving father-king must rescue his kidnapped child from the evil emperor Zaraaima, an embodiment of demonic power.”
    • “Want a good side-scroller with a rich storyline, pick this one up.”
    • “The controls are simple enough and it is a fun game to play with an interesting storyline.”
    • “The story is serviceable but minimal, told mainly through brief cutscenes and text screens.”
    • “This isn’t necessarily a flaw given the game’s focus on action, but it does mean that players looking for deeper storytelling will find little to hold onto.”
    • “With random difficulty spikes, strange controls, and almost mandatory hidden power-ups constantly halting my progress through the poorly translated story, I didn't see much reason to keep playing.”
