The graphics of "Forgive Me Father" have received widespread acclaim for their unique comic book-inspired art style, which effectively blends 2D and 3D elements to create a visually striking experience reminiscent of Lovecraftian horror. Many reviewers praised the game's vibrant and detailed environments, noting that the art direction enhances the overall atmosphere, despite some criticisms regarding level design and gameplay mechanics. While the visuals are often described as stunning and engaging, opinions vary on their impact on gameplay, with some players finding the aesthetics overshadowed by repetitive mechanics.
“One of the game's most prominent features is its presentation that blends pixel-shaded 3D environments with a unique, dark comic-like hand-drawn art style of monsters and weapons, which works surprisingly well and evokes a feeling of being plunged into a bygone era of the 1920s.”
“The art style and the visuals are gorgeous.”
“The comic book-inspired visuals are not only a breath of fresh air but also enhance the game's eerie atmosphere perfectly.”
“The art style is what the game offers, but the level design is so bad that I would get dizzy and nauseous after half an hour of playing, which I would have never expected to get while playing an FPS.”
“The graphics are just messy.”
“While the art style was charming at first, seeing enough minimal animations on enemies who pop in and out of cover makes the already middling gameplay feel like little more than a goofy shooting gallery.”

The gameplay is a mix of fast-paced, retro-inspired shooting mechanics reminiscent of classic titles like Doom, with a variety of weapons and upgrade systems that enhance the experience. While many players appreciate the fun and responsive combat, some criticize the repetitiveness of enemy encounters and level design, leading to a somewhat uneven experience. Overall, the game offers engaging gameplay with a unique art style and solid mechanics, though it may not fully satisfy those seeking depth and variety.
“The gameplay is fast-paced and the endless hordes of monstrosities will keep you on your toes at all times with save point locations spread far and thin to test your grit.”
“The gameplay is very fun and responsive, and the amazing soundtrack makes blasting enemies and traversing levels a ton of fun.”
“This game offers a delightful journey through a beautifully twisted world that perfectly marries a fresh art style with classic run-and-gun mechanics, creating an experience that feels both nostalgic and innovative.”
“The gameplay was simply too awful and lifeless for me to force myself forward.”
“Unfortunately, the gameplay isn't fun and the level design isn't very good.”
“The gameplay feels like a doom shooter, but then the actual gameplay punishes you for trying to play it like one.”

The story in the game is generally considered weak and underdeveloped, often overshadowed by the gameplay. While some players appreciate the Lovecraftian themes and atmospheric elements, many find the narrative to be cryptic, predictable, and lacking coherence, with minimal character development and a reliance on scattered collectibles for lore. Overall, the consensus is that while the game excels in action and aesthetics, its storytelling leaves much to be desired.
“The game is splendid, not some low effort cash-in, the movement and feel of the weapons, levels and pacing, world-building and story, holy crap the art, and a super satisfying set of guns as a cherry on top.”
“As the story progresses, the game takes a dark turn into ever more psychotic scenarios, reflecting the protagonist's descent into madness.”
“The story is there if you want it and skippable if you don't.”
“The areas in which the game properly falls down are story, script, and voice acting - all of which feed off the quality of the writing which, at least in the English version, feels like it was fed through Google Translate.”
“The story is nearly nonexistent with bad English.”
“What little story there is doesn't propel the gameplay at all and if I ever replay this game I'll probably skip the cutscenes and story collectibles entirely.”

The music in the game has received widespread acclaim, with many reviewers praising its heavy metal soundtrack that enhances the fast-paced gameplay and complements the game's atmosphere. While some find the music to be somewhat generic or repetitive, the overall consensus is that it effectively drives the action and immerses players in the experience. The combination of engaging sound design and a compelling soundtrack contributes significantly to the game's appeal, making it a standout feature for fans of the genre.
“The gameplay is very fun and responsive, and the amazing soundtrack makes blasting enemies and traversing levels a ton of fun.”
“The soundtrack is a haunting blend of industrial and ambient soundscapes that perfectly complements the game's atmosphere.”
“The music is phenomenal.”
“I turned off the music completely because it was very annoying and didn't fit what was going on at most times.”
“The music has its moments, but the generic heavy rock soundtrack doesn't fit the tone at all and ruins the mood in places.”
“The only department that left me wanting was the music; there was one track that stood out to me and the rest felt pretty boilerplate as far as boomer shooters go these days.”

The atmosphere in the game is widely praised for its immersive and haunting qualities, effectively blending elements of cosmic horror with a unique art style reminiscent of dark comic books. While many reviewers highlight the strong sound design and visual aesthetics that enhance the overall experience, some note that the music can detract from the intended atmosphere, particularly in moments where a more subdued or thematic score would be more fitting. Overall, the game successfully creates a compelling and eerie environment that resonates well with fans of the genre.
“The game's soundtrack is a haunting blend of industrial and ambient soundscapes that perfectly complements the game's atmosphere.”
“The atmosphere was definitely a win for me.”
“The atmosphere, guns, and music come together to create a unique experience.”
“For a game that is based on a horror theme, there's almost no downtime to generate atmosphere, instead going all out as soon as they start, and the player moves extremely fast with no walking option, so any themes or visual works are just sprinted past.”
“While it's excellent on its own right, any semblance this game had of an atmosphere is destroyed by the industrial metal that accompanies the proceedings.”
“My only critique would be the choice of music, as every single boomer shooter on the market is abusing heavy rock overtones in an attempt to mimic the appeal of Mick Gordon/Andrew Hulshult-esque composition, and for a game slathered in Lovecraftian overtones and atmosphere, it instantly takes me out of the experience.”

Overall, the game's optimization has received mixed reviews, with some players experiencing significant performance issues such as freezing, long loading times, and frame rate drops, particularly in busy areas or specific levels. While a few users noted excellent performance on high-end systems, many reported that the game struggles to maintain stability and smoothness, especially on lower-end hardware or certain operating systems like Linux. Despite its appealing graphics and gameplay, the optimization concerns have led to frustration among players.

“The best part about this game is that it doesn't take some professional-grade PC to run smoothly.”
“+ Performance was buttery smooth.”
“Probably the devs just couldn’t have optimized the engine to be able to support so many enemies presented at one time.”
“The most unoptimized game I've played so far.”
“Good game, but optimization sucks; framerate is poor even if you have a decent PC.”

The game offers significant replayability through its two playable characters, each with unique abilities, and a robust skill tree that allows for diverse weapon upgrades and customization. Players can explore hidden secrets, engage in new game+ modes, and tackle an endless/horde mode, enhancing the overall experience. While the campaign may be relatively short, the variety in gameplay options and challenges encourages multiple playthroughs.
“There's a lot of replayability thanks to two playable characters, each of whom have their own abilities, and the secrets hidden throughout levels. The arsenal is pretty dope, and there's a lot of customization you can sink your teeth into thanks to the skill trees; depending on what you favor, you can simply upgrade your weapons to do more damage, or you can often apply exotic upgrades to them that change how they're used.”
“It took me roughly 5 hours to complete the campaign on normal, but it does offer replayability in the form of playing a different character that has different abilities, as well as a new game+ mode for further customization.”
“Forgive Me Father is the perfect blend of classic Doom/Wolfenstein combat mixed with an amazing soundtrack and perfect comic book style visuals, all while being filled with easter eggs, secrets, and plenty of replay value between its two main characters with their own unique abilities.”
“I'd normally say the game is quite short for its price, but if I understood correctly, there is another branch with a different character (possibly the father, as I played as the journalist), so counting that in with replayability with secrets and percentage-runs, interesting enemies, worlds, and themes.”
“It took me roughly 5 hours to complete the campaign on normal but it does offer replayability in the form of playing a different character that has different abilities, as well as a new game + mode for further customization.”
“It isn't much for content but the atmosphere is highly immersive and has 2 classes with different abilities, and a short but branching upgrade tree that changes how you play the game and adds a lot to its replay value.”

Overall, players find the grinding aspect of the game to be tedious, particularly in the later levels where backtracking, long enemy encounters, and poorly designed level layouts detract from the experience. Many reviews highlight that the combat becomes repetitive and frustrating due to bullet sponge enemies and unbalanced difficulty, especially in the final acts. While the game has engaging elements, the grindy nature and lack of satisfying progression ultimately lead to a diminished enjoyment towards the end.
“You'll need a second life for grinding.”
“The level design takes a nosedive near the end; when the levels aren't grindy or a slog of enemy spam, they're unbelievably frustrating.”
“However, starting from world 3, the levels begin to get longer, more tedious, more annoying and more stingy with save points.”
“The level design takes a nosedive near the end, too: when the levels aren't grindy or a slog of enemy spam, they're unbelievably frustrating.”
“Good concept, ruined by bad enemy placements, grindy arenas, either too little or too many pickups at the worst times, powers having limited stacks and too long animations that chew off precious seconds, level up system that punishes more than rewarding due to the grinding necessary.”

“The game runs great.”
“Completely bug free for my 11h playthrough.”
“Runs great on Steam Deck too, which is a must for me now.”
“That hurts because this game looks really interesting and I've heard good things about it, but it black-screens on launch and freezes.”
“Also for achievement hunters, be cautious; one hidden achievement is buggy and it might not unlock.”
“The episode four boss is buggy; it either doesn't spawn or spawns but doesn't do anything - I had to keep reloading until it decided to work.”

“If you were ever like 'I wish there were a game like Doom, but with Lovecraftian tentacle monsters and a good sense of humor,' this is that game.”
“This obviously isn't a game that takes itself or its source material too seriously, using camp aesthetic and bits of humor throughout to lighten the mood.”

Forgive Me Father Review (PS4)
Forgive Me Father is a frantic and fun horror FPS packed full of twisted enemies, inventive weapons and just enough mystery to keep you hooked.
70%Forgive Me Father Review
Forgive Me Father is a painfully average shooter that has a lot of good ideas on paper, but never executes them effectively. As a result, its disjointed areas, upgrade system, and overall level of polish leaves much to be desired.
55%Forgive Me Father Review (PC)
Forgive Me Father is a good first-person shooter that, despite embracing the retro concept, does not rely on nostalgia to draw players in. I played it relatively cautiously, conserving ammo when I could, and I didn’t feel like the madness system worked against me. But the game is at its best in the big arena fights, with big groups of enemies, a shredding soundtrack, and no option but to take the fight to them. The limited narrative works well for it, mostly because players can focus on the combat and on how they can improve their performance. The game should deliver more combat arenas and fewer jumping puzzles, but overall Forgive Me Father is one of the best retro FPS experiences of the moment. Review code provided by the publisher.
