  • gameplay
    97 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay is praised for its versatility, featuring seven distinct characters with unique abilities that enhance the experience through character switching and strategic gameplay. While many enjoy the retro-inspired mechanics and challenging level design, some players find the difficulty and certain mechanics, like unfair boss battles and frustrating segments, detract from the overall enjoyment. Overall, the game is seen as a solid homage to classic Castlevania titles, offering a mix of nostalgia and modern refinements, though it may not appeal to those who dislike metroidvania or retro styles.

    • “This game is hard, but the variety in gameplay and character skills is incredible, which compensates for the challenging level design by offering many ways to overcome the obstacles.”
    • “Great bosses, challenging levels, lots of secrets and endings, smooth and polished graphics and game feel, and I just love the core gameplay revolving around quick-swapping between characters to utilize their unique powers when it best fits the situation.”
    • “The gameplay is very enjoyable since the characters all play a little differently and have clear strengths and weaknesses.”
    • “If you don't like metroidvania, retro games, or old-style gameplay, then this isn't for you.”
    • “The gameplay has no identity as it fails to capture what made the old Castlevania games fun to begin with.”
    • “But the gameplay and level layout is so unforgiving that it renders the game unplayable.”
  • music
    92 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game has received mixed reviews, with many players noting that while it is generally good and fits the retro aesthetic, it does not reach the memorable heights of the first installment's soundtrack. Some praise the soundtrack as catchy and enjoyable, while others find it repetitive or lacking in standout tracks. Overall, the music is considered solid but falls short of the expectations set by its predecessor.

    • “The soundtrack is a banger and the pixel art is gorgeous.”
    • “The game’s music is still incredibly good, still done by the incredible Michiru Yamane.”
    • “Amazing level design, fantastic music, each of the characters are super different.”
    • “The level design is lackluster and the rooms can be very similar, the locations themselves are less impressive, and the music isn't as memorable; the same applies to the bosses.”
    • “Even the music is repetitive and gets quickly annoying; again, the first part had an awesome soundtrack that stands on its own.”
    • “The only thing that really disappointed me is the music.”
  • story
    71 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story in the game has received mixed reviews, with some players finding it simple and corny, while others appreciate its charm and character development. Although the narrative features interesting moments and encourages multiple playthroughs to uncover different story paths, many feel it lacks depth and originality compared to its predecessor. Overall, while the story serves its purpose in driving gameplay, it is often seen as a secondary aspect to the fun mechanics and level design.

    • “The game looks beautiful, with many compelling characters, along with a decent storyline.”
    • “The story is great for an action game.”
    • “The devs care just as much as the fans do about the story and the little details all throughout, which is truly a rarity nowadays.”
    • “The story is pretty corny, but the level designs and character abilities are fun.”
    • “Finally, the story is also lacking; as there isn't any neat twists or good explanation for the alternate options on a subsequent go-through.”
    • “The story of ROTN is totally forgettable.”
  • graphics
    43 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics of "Curse of the Moon 2" have been widely praised for their polished, colorful 8-bit aesthetic that effectively captures the classic Castlevania vibe while incorporating modern playability. Reviewers highlight the game's beautiful environments, detailed pixel art, and smooth animations, noting that it successfully pays homage to retro gaming while offering a visually appealing experience. Overall, the graphics are considered a standout feature, enhancing the nostalgic feel of the game.

    • “The game has some really beautiful environments, and the graphics are really well designed and laid out, making it a perfect homage to the classic Castlevania games.”
    • “In fact, despite stiff competition, I think this game has the best 8-bit inspired graphics out there.”
    • “The pixel graphics/art style is still amazing, very detailed, and there were just some set pieces and backgrounds that were incredible to see, like the museum level or the whole final episode to cleave the moon.”
    • “Cotm 2 is great at what it sets out to do, albeit nothing groundbreaking obviously, being a solid NES game (albeit with better graphics etc) in 2020.”
    • “I knew it would be 8-bit pixel aesthetic, but they did advertise modern playability, which I really don't think this game qualifies as.”
    • “The sprites and graphics are as classic and glorious as they are, the boss fights are (mostly) entertaining, the OST is neat, just not as memorable as CotM 1 in my opinion.”
  • replayability
    41 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game boasts high replayability, with multiple routes, characters, and endings that encourage players to explore different strategies and experiences. Many reviewers highlight the variety of gameplay modes and episodic content, which significantly enhance replay value. However, some players feel that while replayability is abundant, it may require multiple playthroughs to fully appreciate all the content available.

    • “I didn't unlock the secret stuff, and there is plenty of replayability with the ability to replay the levels, taking different routes, and on the higher, more intended difficulty settings.”
    • “Curse of the Moon 2 offers a new plethora of levels, characters, and bosses that make the game feel fresh and highly replayable.”
    • “The different combinations of characters you can take on your journey added a great replay value.”
    • “Overall a more polished game with a lot of replayability; if you liked the first one, then get it for sure. If not, then I wouldn't recommend it since it's essentially the same game at its core.”
    • “While the first game had replay value by giving you multiple pathways to choose from and explore for each stage, the second game’s level design took that away.”
    • “I'd say the biggest downside to this game is the 'replayability factor.' To get the most out of the game (including achievements), I believe you need to play it at least six times through.”
  • optimization
    14 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's optimization has received mixed feedback, with initial reports of significant stuttering and performance issues, particularly on older systems. However, a recent patch (1.1.1) has addressed many of these concerns, eliminating stuttering for most players, though some minor issues, like crashes when switching to fullscreen, remain. Overall, while improvements have been made, further optimization for lower-end PCs is still needed.

    • “As of update 1.1.1, I had no stuttering or other technical issues on my laptop at all, so most people should be fine.”
    • “The optimization in this game has significantly improved, making for a smoother experience overall.”
    • “The controls and optimization in this game are much better than in previous versions.”
    • “The game is poorly optimized; I mean, it's a retro game, the point is that it should run well on old/weak/potato systems, but somehow my (old) Radeon HD 6970 with my (old) Athlon II X3 of 3.3GHz struggles and lags in some levels.”
    • “The game is micro-stuttering every 3 seconds from 60fps to around 54-56fps when the game window is focused, making it incredibly frustrating to play or even look at.”
    • “Update: the stuttering was quickly patched, but the crash when switching to full screen still exists.”
  • grinding
    10 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Reviews indicate that the grinding aspect of the game is largely viewed as tedious and repetitive, particularly in the later levels where players must replay sections multiple times to unlock content. While the initial levels are engaging, the need to farm for upgrades and the slow pace of progression detract from the overall experience, making it challenging for casual players to enjoy the game fully. Despite the appealing difficulty and music, the grind often overshadows the fun, leading to frustration among players.

    • “It's a hard game for a casual playthrough and a tedious one if you want to 100% the game.”
    • “The game is great for the first four levels, but from level 5 onwards it becomes a tedious slog, even on casual mode.”
    • “This is a problem when you enjoy the difficulty but don't have the time to spare going back over and over through slow, tedious levels.”
  • stability
    8 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's stability is widely criticized, with numerous users reporting persistent glitches and bugs that have not been addressed by the developers. While some players find the core gameplay enjoyable, the technical issues, including problems with screen resolution and control responsiveness, significantly detract from the overall experience. Many users have opted for refunds due to these unresolved stability concerns.

    • “The game claims it does, but it's glitchy and buggy and hasn't been fixed, so I refunded it after fiddling around with it for 7 minutes.”
    • “The game itself is fine, but omg with this version, has so many glitches I don't know how they never fixed them.”
    • “Great follow up and I was very excited for it but the glitches surrounding the output resolution is a definite problem.”
  • humor
    7 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game is a mix of quirky and tongue-in-cheek moments, highlighted by amusing character interactions, such as the comical exchange between Zangetsu and Robert. While some elements may feel forced or unnecessary, players find genuine hilarity in the absurdity of certain situations, particularly in later stages of the game. Overall, the humor adds a lighthearted contrast to the game's darker themes, though it may not resonate with everyone.

    • “Yeah, it's obvious Inti Creates and IGA had 'fun' here, combining the grim-dark-goth-fantasy tone the game has overall with some tongue-in-cheek humor.”
    • “When you reach that point, some of the dialogue gets genuinely hilarious, most notably the exchange between Zangetsu and Robert, who go full himbo and try to figure out how to light a campfire in their final destination, which features a total lack of oxygen.”
    • “It's quite funny to hop on to each other and get to unreachable areas that way.”
    • “Do you crave tons of random, unfunny junk?”
  • character development
    4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game features a blend of goofy and heartfelt storytelling, with character development effectively conveyed through campfire scenes that allow characters to relax and reflect without dialogue. The well-crafted character interactions, particularly for Zangetsu and Robert, enhance the overall depth and design of the characters.

    • “I love the goofy, over-the-top feeling of the story, but the game’s narrative also has a lot of heartfelt moments and character development.”
    • “My favorite part is after beating a level, where the characters sit around a campfire. They relax, goof off, or reflect on things, which greatly enhances character development without the need for words.”
    • “The character dialogue in the game is excellent and provides significant development for characters like Zangetsu and others, with Robert having the best character development.”
  • emotional
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The emotional aspect of the game is highlighted by significant character development and heartfelt moments, particularly from episode 2 onward, where a character confronts their biases and experiences a poignant breakdown, leading to unexpected comfort from another character. While the story maintains a goofy and over-the-top tone, it effectively balances humor with genuine emotional depth.

    • “This is especially heartwarming from episode 2 onward, where one character realizes their biases against two others were completely unfair, to the point where they break down from the event and are soon comforted by the other member whom they viewed so dispassionately previously.”
    • “I love the goofy over-the-top feeling of the story, but the game’s story also has a lot of heartfelt moments and character development.”
  • atmosphere
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The atmosphere of the game is highly praised, with stage aesthetics and animated transitions reminiscent of the first installment. Players appreciate the engaging music and controls, all while enjoying the unique experience of playing as a corgi in a magical suit of armor.

    • “The stage aesthetics are as atmospheric and as good as the first game, and I liked how the stage transition scenes are animated in this game.”
    • “The atmosphere is great, the music is great, the controls are great, and you get to play as a corgi who controls a magical suit of armor.”
  • monetization
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The monetization model is praised for being fair and transparent, avoiding exploitative practices like pay-to-win mechanics or excessive microtransactions. Players appreciate the absence of nickel-and-dime schemes, indicating a focus on player experience over profit.

    • “The monetization model feels exploitative, with constant prompts to spend money on in-game purchases.”
    • “It's frustrating to see that progress is heavily gated behind paywalls, making it hard to enjoy the game without spending extra.”
    • “The game is riddled with microtransactions that detract from the overall experience, making it feel more like a cash grab than a fun game.”
