About
"Battle Axe is a fantasy hack and slash game with phenomenal visuals and good music. Play solo or team up with a friend in local 2-player co-op, controlling heroes with distinct traits, fierce melee attacks, and long-range projectiles. Embark on a mission to free Mercia from the clutches of the evil sorceress Etheldred."

- Stunning pixel art and a nostalgic soundtrack that captures the essence of classic arcade games.
- Engaging gameplay with a variety of character abilities and upgrade options that enhance replayability.
- Challenging difficulty levels that provide a rewarding experience for players who enjoy mastering their skills.
- Limited content with only four stages and no continues, making the game feel short and repetitive.
- Frustrating design choices, such as a zoomed-in camera and unclear hitboxes, leading to cheap deaths and obscured visibility.
- High price point compared to the amount of content and features offered, making it feel unworthy of its cost.
graphics
33 mentions Positive Neutral NegativeThe graphics of the game are widely praised for their beautiful sprite work and nostalgic retro aesthetic, reminiscent of classic arcade visuals. While the artwork and animation are considered outstanding, some players note that the gameplay suffers from a lack of depth and practicality, with environmental elements sometimes obscuring visibility. Overall, the visuals are a highlight, but they are not enough to compensate for the game's shortcomings in gameplay.
“The gorgeous graphics and tight arcade gameplay make for a great package.”
“The graphics and music are excellent, a very well done throwback to the classic arcade game era.”
“Bright, tight pixel graphics leap out of the screen, just like they did in the 'good old days'.”
“A choice was made to use obsolete, decades-old retro pixel 'art' as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics.”
“There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks.”
“The environmental elements (such as trees) obscure the vision dramatically, as a tree makes your character completely hidden behind it, alongside your enemies, so you are not aware of any projectiles shot in your direction or literally anything that happens behind the enormous graphical elements.”
Battle Axe Review
A great addition to anyone's Switch catalogue, Battle Axe provides some neat pick-up-and-play value with an Infinite mode accompanying the standard story fare. In tandem, these modes are perfect for coping with the daily commute with some bashing and slashing and are backed by a fantastic soundtrack and gorgeous retro art style. Although it has a savagely brutal difficulty curve for the young'uns (as well as older folk who don't have the reaction times they once did), Battle Axe is a decent conversion full of nostalgic fun.

Battle Axe is a good-looking homage to the classic hack and slash arcade efforts of yesteryear that's dragged down by some fairly dull and repetitive action. It looks the part, sounds the part, nails the aesthetic and vibe that it's going for completely, but then it drops the ball with regards to level design, enemy AI and in providing any sense of strategy or surprise during a short campaign that gives you very little reason to return once its done and dusted. If only it had a few twists and turns and a handful more levels, this one could have been well worth a playthrough but, as things stand, it's pretty forgettable stuff.
