  • graphics
    85 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics of the game evoke a nostalgic 90s aesthetic, blending retro pixel art with medieval themes, which some players find charming and visually appealing. However, others criticize the engine's performance, noting bugs and a cluttered interface that detracts from the overall experience. While the art style and atmosphere receive praise for their creativity and authenticity, the dated visuals may not appeal to everyone, particularly those seeking modern graphical fidelity.

    • “One of the things I most enjoyed was the developers' obvious love for medieval and renaissance art; there are always interesting paintings, tapestries, carvings, and sculptures from real life put into the game as sprites and part of the map that give it a great aesthetic.”
    • “The graphics are charming, the sound is gruesome, the old-school level design is great (with tons of secret areas and collectibles), the violence is glorious, and the melee combat feels meaty and satisfying.”
    • “The retro art style and Arthurian aesthetics are amazing.”
    • “The visuals feel straight from the 90s and this was built on engine 001.”
    • “Was physically hard for me to look at the game's graphics; also, the gameplay itself was just annoying.”
    • “I didn't encounter anything too egregious, but the visuals are kinda buggy, the HUD is kinda buggy, some of the geometry is kinda buggy, jumping is actually pretty buggy, and saving is buggy.”
  • gameplay
    73 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay experience is highly polarized among users, with some praising its nostalgic charm, variety in combat mechanics, and engaging level design, while others criticize its stiffness, technical issues, and lack of fluidity. Many appreciate the depth of melee combat and the inclusion of unique mechanics like parrying and shield management, but some find the overall execution lacking, leading to frustration with enemy AI and repetitive gameplay. Overall, the game offers a mix of enjoyable retro-inspired elements and significant technical drawbacks that affect the overall experience.

    • “I love the look of it, the gameplay, the variety of combat (with tons of weapons, items, and runes to use), the level design, the humor, and the amount of content it has for a really low price.”
    • “The combat is satisfying and gritty with a few different mechanics to give it a level of skill, like blocking, shield bashing, etc. Multiple different types of weapons and spells keep the gameplay fresh.”
    • “Surprisingly deep gameplay, great level design, and punishing combat.”
    • “The gameplay just feels...wrong - it's very stiff and slow.”
    • “It doesn't matter if you have a NASA PC or a potato PC, you can't enjoy fluid gameplay.”
    • “The problem is that the game becomes utterly boring; it doesn't have a lot of character, the gameplay doesn't evolve throughout the game, you just get spongier versions of the first enemies, and the levels all blend together as there are no real set pieces or unique environments.”
  • optimization
    55 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's optimization has received significant criticism, with many players experiencing frequent frame rate drops and overall subpar performance, even after recent patches aimed at addressing these issues. While some users report that performance has improved, it remains a major drawback, affecting gameplay fluidity and responsiveness, particularly with mouse controls. Overall, the game's potential is overshadowed by its technical shortcomings, leaving players hoping for further optimization improvements.

    • “Arthurian Legends is a good retro shooter, and the few issues I had with the game are well offset by its solid gameplay performance.”
    • “Performance has already improved noticeably, and most other issues I noticed on release have already been addressed in a little over a week.”
    • “Only complaints so far are that there are some optimization issues; the framerate is very unstable, so hopefully the dev will find a way to improve performance later with patches and updates.”
    • “The main issue with this game is the performance.”
    • “The options menu has a performance section, but no matter what you change, it doesn't affect anything.”
    • “Poor performance is the only thing holding back this awesome throwback shooter.”
  • music
    35 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game has received mixed reviews, with some players finding it generic and repetitive, while others appreciate its fitting orchestral style that enhances the medieval atmosphere. Many noted that while the soundtrack may not be memorable, it effectively complements the gameplay and level design, contributing to the overall experience. Overall, the music is described as decent but not groundbreaking, with some players opting to play with it turned down or off.

    • “The soundtrack accompanying it is also quite subtle at times, though when the action calms down, it becomes prominent and isn't half-bad either, combining a sense of rollicking adventure with dark despair.”
    • “Even the music is a welcome change from the 90s MIDI tracks of Doom to a more epic fantasy soundtrack, with a nice, dark edge.”
    • “The orchestral soundtrack is something I would describe in two words: majestic and dramatic.”
    • “The music gets repetitive at times, but you can always turn it down for the rest of the level.”
    • “The music isn't anything to write home about, but the visual design is good and the levels are all well put together.”
    • “If I really wanted to nitpick, I'd say that music is rather generic and not exactly interesting and the game is missing map feature.”
  • atmosphere
    27 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The atmosphere of the game is widely praised for its dark, retro aesthetic, rich fantasy elements, and immersive sound design, creating a thick ambiance that enhances the overall experience. Players appreciate the combination of gritty visuals, atmospheric level design, and engaging combat, which together evoke a strong sense of nostalgia and excitement. Despite some criticisms regarding repetitive stages, the game's ability to balance serious themes with humor and its attention to detail in environmental design contribute significantly to its captivating atmosphere.

    • “Extremely crisp, stylish and just oozes atmosphere.”
    • “I really liked the way that the game looked, the individual assets of the game looked very nice, and I often caught myself just stopping to examine something stuck on a wall or sitting on a shelf, and they were used in conjunction with the lighting to invoke different atmospheres effectively.”
    • “The atmosphere is so thick with dark fantasy vibes you’ll start hearing Gregorian chanting in your head after a few hours.”
    • “A decently made, retro-style first-person hack-n-slash with satisfyingly visceral combat, intuitively sprawling level design and a well-crafted atmosphere that, despite its flaws, managed to keep me engaged throughout.”
    • “I really liked the way that the game looked; the individual assets of the game looked very nice, and I often caught myself just stopping to examine something stuck on a wall or sitting on a shelf. They were used in conjunction with the lighting to invoke different atmospheres effectively, such as the warmly lit interior of Arthur's house at the beginning of the game, or the cold and stark village at the start of chapter 2.”
  • story
    23 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's story is described as a typical fantasy narrative with dark and gory elements, primarily serving as a backdrop for engaging combat rather than a focal point. While some players appreciate the medieval atmosphere and the minimal storytelling approach, many feel it lacks depth and could benefit from a more developed plot. Overall, the story is seen as secondary to the gameplay experience, which includes various modes and challenges that enhance replayability.

    • “Besides tons of secrets and stuff to do, game modes and whatnot, the story and soundtrack are enjoyable and give the medieval feelings its due, and I also loved how they based the entirety of the enemies' sprites on digitally reconstructed figures like the original Doom (1993).”
    • “Another interesting thing is that every projectile is physical; there are no hitscan ranged attacks, and you can block them with either your shield or by shooting the projectile directly. The story is pretty typical fantasy, but for being based on King Arthur, this game has a dark fantasy setting and is quite gory. The combat feels great, with weapons and spells feeling impactful thanks to the great sound effects and gore effects.”
    • “In addition to the main story, there are two additional modes (an endless supply of enemies to kill in horde, and themed arena battles against different groups of enemies to test your skills), not to mention tons and tons of secret areas and items to find scattered throughout the game.”
    • “It could use a bit more story/plot.”
    • “You don't play this game for the story.”
    • “It has the story told to you during the cutscene which is also located in 'the story so far' section you'd find on the likes of Duke Nukem 3D.”
  • humor
    10 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game is characterized by a tongue-in-cheek, slightly cringe 90s style that complements its over-the-top gameplay and design. Players appreciate the blend of gore and comedy, with a variety of weapons and absurd scenarios that evoke nostalgia for classic shooters. Overall, the humor is seen as a strong point, enhancing the game's retro charm and appeal.

    • “The humor is incredibly tongue-in-cheek and certainly on-par with the shooters of the past.”
    • “A challenging, chunky, well-designed and humorous 90's throwback shooter that belongs in the same conversations as Dusk and Ion Fury.”
    • “Equal measure humorous and brutal that shares a spirit with the DOS classics.”
  • stability
    8 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's stability is generally described as somewhat buggy, with issues affecting visuals, HUD, geometry, and saving/loading functions. While these bugs can detract from the experience, they are not deemed overly severe, and the short levels help mitigate frustration from potential replays. Additionally, players have noted that leaving the game idle for too long can lead to freezing.

    • “A well-produced and relatively bug-free title coming from a single developer.”
    • “The game runs smoothly without any crashes or major glitches.”
    • “I appreciate how stable the gameplay is; it allows me to fully immerse myself in the experience.”
    • “I didn't encounter anything too egregious, but the visuals are kind of buggy, the HUD is kind of buggy, some of the geometry is kind of buggy, jumping is actually pretty buggy, and saving is buggy.”
    • “I want to be lenient with indie devs most of the time regarding bugs and glitches, but for me performance is something that I'm always going to be a hard-ass about, because it's the difference between enjoyment and misery for me.”
    • “Also, if you leave the game idle too long, it freezes.”
  • replayability
    6 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game offers significant replayability through its creative level design, various difficulty settings, and multiple modes, including a newgame+ mode and additional challenges like arena and horde modes. Players can enjoy hours of gameplay by exploring hidden secrets, utilizing a diverse array of weapons and spells, and engaging with the minimalistic storytelling. Overall, the combination of these features ensures a rewarding experience that encourages repeated play.

    • “Great replay value with different difficulties and modes, bonus levels, rewarding and hard-to-find secrets, a satisfying variety of weapons and spells, and perfectly minimal and world-based storytelling.”
    • “Level design is highly creative, items are well-placed with brilliant purpose, there are plenty of environmental hazards to nimbly avoid, and there seems to be some real thought behind the replay value with the inclusion of a New Game+ mode (which adds a merchant).”
    • “Classic retro style with hours of replay value.”
    • “Also included in the package are two extra modes: arena and horde mode, giving quite a bit more replayability.”
  • emotional
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Users express mixed emotions regarding the game's aesthetics and movement mechanics, noting that the chaotic visuals can detract from the experience. However, there is a sense of wonder and excitement in the gameplay, particularly in moments that evoke a strong emotional response, such as interacting with unique elements like enchanted parchment.

    • “Now thou shalt say, can it really be so, that a game can bestow thee such great sport, with the mere act of touching the rat, and to behold an axe smite on an enchanted parchment that has light?”
  • grinding
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Players appreciate the grinding aspect of the game, noting that the diverse weapon mechanics and satisfying feedback, along with various enemy death animations, help maintain engagement and prevent the experience from becoming repetitive or tedious. The gory visuals and dynamic interactions contribute positively to the overall enjoyment of the grinding process.

    • “The grinding in this game feels endless and tedious, making it hard to stay engaged.”
    • “I find the repetitive nature of grinding to be a major drawback; it really detracts from the overall experience.”
    • “The amount of time spent grinding for resources feels excessive and takes away from the enjoyment of the game.”
