The gameplay combines fast-paced side-scrolling shooting with tower defense mechanics, offering a fun and addictive core loop enriched by varied weapons, units, and upgrades. While its old-school flash game charm, humor, and art style are widely praised, some players note janky controls, occasional bugs, difficulty spikes, and limited map variety that slightly detract from the experience. Overall, it delivers engaging, challenging gameplay with nostalgic appeal, though deeper mechanics and polish could enhance it further.

    • “There's definitely some bugs, but nothing game breaking and the core gameplay loop is super enjoyable with a fun variety of weapons, equipment, and upgrades.”
    • “The tension between maintaining pressure on the enemy while reinforcing your own lines gives the moment-to-moment gameplay an addictive rhythm, especially during intense, fast-moving clashes where the screen fills with explosions, debris, and fallen soldiers.”
    • “The gameplay loop is rewarding, fun and can be extremely difficult, with a range of settings to really punish yourself - or have an easy, relaxing time.”
    • “The jump mechanic is janky and only really feels useful for peeking above your troops for a quick shot at the enemy. Using it to climb boxes is more trouble than it's worth, as I often miss platforms and get punished with damage.”
    • “I don't know if this was by design or a bug, but level 3 took me an absurd amount of attempts because I got stuck in a deadlock with small waves continually crashing.”
    • “One feels the passion and fun the creators had, but small bugs and gameplay issues like difficulty spikes, grind without reward, and missing progression make it a chore.”

The game's soundtrack, featuring heavy metal and rock influences reminiscent of Mick Gordon's style, is widely praised for its energy and perfect fit with the gritty yet playful art and gameplay. Reviewers highlight the music as a standout element that greatly enhances the experience, with many describing it as intense, memorable, and essential to the game's vibe. Though some note a desire for more variety, the music consistently receives acclaim for its quality and impact.

    • “The soundtrack absolutely shreds and greatly enhances the game.”
    • “The music kicks ass, the adorable little rats kick ass, the art kicks ass, the skaven references kick ass, the fighting kicks ass, the explosions kick ass, getting vaporized by a big heccing boi in a chair kicks ass.”
    • “A great combat loop with a killer soundtrack.”
    • “Some bugs like the special rat not coming out for whatever reason, music being turned back on weirdly enough despite being turned all the way down.”
    • “It is very bloody and graphic with loud metal music.”
    • “Fragility of the player—especially early, and some upgrade costs/gun purchases really encouraging you to farm cheese, but the music and overall game vibe scream push!”
  • graphics

The game features a fantastic, hand-drawn art style with vibrant, gritty visuals that blend cartoon gore and humor, creating a unique and charming aesthetic reminiscent of classic flash games but with much richer content. While the graphics are widely praised for their detail and style, some users report occasional bugs and graphical glitches. Overall, the artistic design strongly enhances the game's vibe and complements its energetic gameplay.

    • “The artwork is especially fantastic and the game has so much charm and style.”
    • “The hand drawn graphics and sprites are super well done and the metal music makes you... rat guy?”
    • “The clash between the organic and the technological creates a constantly shifting battlefield aesthetic, drenched in cartoon gore and frantic energy.”
    • “On my laptop the graphics bug out constantly.”
    • “That too is very flash: a cheap cheesy game, poorly made or thought out, but it does what it's doing well enough and the aesthetic carries a lot of weight.”
    • “Feels like something you would play on miniclip as a kid but x10 the content and x10 the visuals.”
  • humor

    22 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
100% positive mentions, 0% neutral mentions, 0% negative mentions

The game's humor is widely praised for its clever, crude, and rodent-themed jokes that blend well with its exaggerated, hand-drawn art style, delivering plenty of laughs without becoming repetitive. While some find the juvenile humor excessive, most appreciate its unique, frantic, and darkly funny tone, enhanced by amusing dialogue, cutscenes, and developer patch notes. Overall, the humor is a standout feature that complements the gameplay and aesthetic, making for an entertaining experience.

    • “The art, the gameplay, the humor is all tight, and there's at least one time every play session that I at least snort.”
    • “It's simple, it's fun, it's funny without being repetitive, you can't really ask for more.”
    • “Cartoon rats and funny rat-tastic jokes while the guts are flying make this one a real winner.”
  • story

    21 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
14% positive mentions, 72% neutral mentions, 14% negative mentions

The story is praised for its unique scripting, references, and immersion, providing a compelling backdrop that motivates players through the campaign. However, the gameplay loop can feel repetitive, and some players find progression and difficulty spikes frustrating, which may detract from fully appreciating the narrative on subsequent playthroughs. Overall, the story stands out as a strong point amid gameplay and design issues.

    • “It's the story that makes it unique.”
    • “Love the scripting/story and references/innuendos of this game.”
    • “I also admit I'm somewhat enamored with the backstory of the one guy making everything (except his friend made the music), an artist who wanted to be a game programmer; this is certainly a great start.”
    • “A mediocre game that is reminiscent of many flash games with only ten hours I feel as if I've seen everything this game has to offer. The combat is fun but gets old fast. There are many weapons and differing damage types but you never really need to care about it once you get a hold of the rare ones; you can just use that for the entire game and with upgrades it's fine for use during NG+. The actual combat has you stuck at the nearest campsite like a phone with a bad battery, while the tier 3 turret massacres entire waves on its own. Every mission has an annoying endgame where you spam ratniters and hope they reach the base before the next wave spawns. The gear system feels superfluous, only giving minor buffs and cluttering the screen. Damage feedback is also abysmal with no difference shown between an attack that lightly grazes you and one that shreds you, forcing you to stare at the top corner of the screen to avoid dying to a single rocket.”
    • “There's some difficulty progression curve issues for sure and it's not really designed around playing the same mission over again for resources and progression because you can't! The first three missions were okay, they got more difficult, but with the right weapons, good movements, and reinforcements it was clearly beatable. Then the game offered two missions to choose from (going up or down), and even though I chose the map going down with "moderate" difficulty (the top one was "very hard"), I was not able to clear it in over 1 hour. The mission was clearly 2-4 times harder than any mission before. Additionally, the hitboxes of my troops and buildings were really in the way in this mission.”
    • “The 'start of the mission' gameplay loop was strange, because if one was about to fail, it was better to lose and take as much money as possible, so you could upgrade abilities and weapons (which were too expensive overall) or at least get a headstart in the next battle. Especially because the money in the mission and in the nest is the same, there is the strange situation where you lose the battle on purpose to get a better second try.”
  • optimization

    8 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
38% positive mentions, 24% neutral mentions, 38% negative mentions

The game suffers from poor optimization, especially on lower-end hardware, causing low frame rates even for a simple 2D side-scroller. While performance is stable on some platforms like Linux with Proton, many users experience significant slowdowns during intense moments. An optimization patch would greatly improve the overall experience.

    • “Squeaky clean performance out of the box on Linux with Proton.”
    • “Addressing the current problems, bugs aren't that bad at the moment but I'd love to see some improvement towards the optimization; aside from that I'm very satisfied with this.”
    • “Besides bugs, optimization on worse hardware can make the game chug on the heavier populated battles.”
    • “The most glaring issue is the game's poor optimization.”
    • “It's a very flashy game and really horribly optimized.”
    • “Besides bugs, optimization on lower-end hardware can make the game chug during heavier populated battles.”
  • replayability

    7 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
57% positive mentions, 0% neutral mentions, 43% negative mentions

The game offers substantial replayability through its challenging levels, skirmish, horde, and an infinitely increasing difficulty New Game+ mode that all contribute to continuous progression. While the main campaign is relatively short, the core gameplay and additional modes provide engaging and escalating challenges that enhance replay value. However, some players feel the fun tapers off after completing the campaign.

    • “It features campaign, an infinitely replayable (and ever increasing in difficulty) New Game+ mode, skirmish and horde modes, and they all feed into each other when it comes to your experience, blueprints, and CHZ (permanent unlock currency), so no matter what you are doing, you are progressing.”
    • “It does have replayable content (skirmish, horde), but I don't really see the fun extending past finishing the campaign.”
    • “Although the campaign is relatively short, replay value is better than one might expect, and the difficulty level on horde mode can get quite high faster than one might expect.”
    • “The main campaign provides a sequence of escalating battles against increasingly elaborate technorat forces, and additional skirmish modes add some replay value.”
  • grinding

    5 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
0% positive mentions, 0% neutral mentions, 100% negative mentions

Grinding in the game tends to be tedious and often feels unrewarding, especially when upgrades require excessive farming that doesn't proportionally enhance combat effectiveness. Additionally, slow character movement and lack of sprinting make traversing the home base cumbersome, further adding to the grind's tediousness.

    • “This would be fine if your money making capability was increased in relative tandem; however, it gets to a point where striving for upgrades feels more like grinding and, in the case of upgrading my shotgun, not even worth the time.”
    • “Most of the items buff weapons you don't have yet, or troops that are completely useless, so have fun grinding previous levels for items you lost.”
    • “You'll die a lot, but life is cheap as they say and you can 'brute force' a tough level by farming upgrades and new weapons.”
  • stability

    4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
0% positive mentions, 0% neutral mentions, 100% negative mentions

The game's stability is inconsistent, with some users experiencing significant, even save-corrupting bugs that hinder progress, while others encounter only minor, non-critical issues typical of early access titles. Overall, the buggy nature detracts from the experience for some players, though not universally game-breaking.

    • “I really want to say I recommend this because I had a lot of fun, but the game is way too buggy to be sold for any amount of money, and some bugs are save persistent issues so you can't even just reload to clear them.”
    • “It's buggy, the bank ate my cheese and I can't even hurt the last boss :(”
    • “It's a little buggy here and there.”
