The gameplay of Voidrun features a unique orb management mechanic that adds depth but can lead to frustration due to underpowered starts and inconsistent enemy behavior. While the inventive enemy designs and retro-inspired mechanics offer a satisfying experience, issues with visual clarity and dodging can detract from the overall enjoyment. Despite these challenges, the game is praised for its originality, art style, and value, making it appealing for fans of retro-pixel games.
“A core mechanic of Voidrun is managing the stock of orbs you have on hand, so that you do not run out while battling enemies.”
“Very satisfying and addictive game mechanic.”
“Unique reinvention of old-school Qix mechanics and a good microgame in its own right - lots of inventive enemy designs and some fresh twists.”
“But some combination of the core mechanics and enemy design just leads to extremely tedious and frustrating gameplay.”
“Possibly inspired by that one computer game from the late 80s I can't recall the name of, Voidrun tries to present the player a slightly different approach to space shooters, but ends up slowing down the gameplay a tad too much.”
“Some frustrating readability issues arise from the visual busyness and intricate dodging mechanics - the fact that your friendly 'void balls' and enemy bullets both flash similarly, cluster around the player at crucial freeze-frame moments, then spray in similar patterns making them difficult to tell apart - it's deadly confusing and frustrated the hell out of me. More often than not, this is what killed me, and it felt unfair.”
