UnEpic

In the end, Unepic would probably be a better adventure game. This twenty hour or so unabashedly old school RPG is frequently broken up by conversations between characters and these interactions are amusing enough to make the often finicky platforming and combat sections worth persevering with. As a whole, the game has enough charm to recommend to fans of the genre, and those that stick around will likely be impressed by the surprisingly deep RPG mechanics and the Metroidvania approach to level design. However, it's hard not to wonder if the quality of the writing on display here would be better served in a game with a stronger focus on storytelling.

The humor in "unepic" is heavily centered on nerdy, pop culture, and gaming references, often delivered with a crude, juvenile, and self-aware tone that resonates strongly with fans of 90s and early 2000s geek culture. While many players find the witty dialogue, quirky characters, and tongue-in-cheek writing hilarious and a unique strength of the game, others consider the humor repetitive, forced, immature, or offensive, making it polarizing depending on individual taste. Overall, the humor complements the gameplay for those who appreciate irreverent, meta, and culturally referential comedy within a classic metroidvania RPG setting.

    • “The game has a ton of character and some of the cutscenes have had me sitting here laughing so much I've had to hide in a save spot till I could calm down.”
    • “Unepic melds the two into a challenging and hilarious adventure that will easily last you upwards of 20 hours while you explore the game’s dungeons.”
    • “Without spoiling too much, let me just guarantee that if you've grown up on geek culture, you'll love the humor in Unepic.”
    • “The writing is stereotypical, immature, unfunny, and annoying.”
    • “The plot is your run-of-the-mill "a nerd is somehow transported to an actual fantasy and demonstrates his knowledge of fantasy tropes to become a true hero", but it portrays the protagonist (and, by extension, all geek culture) in an extremely ugly, cringy, unfunny, unlikeable, and pitiful light.”
    • “Most of the geek references are actually forced unfunny jokes that are used to cover up the lack of creativity from the developers.”
  • story

40% positive mentions, 56% neutral mentions, 4% negative mentions

The game's story blends humorous, self-aware parody and nerd culture references with a quirky, engaging plot centered on a young RPG player trapped in a fantasy castle. While the narrative features entertaining dialogue, voice acting, and character banter, some find its humor juvenile or cringeworthy, and the plot occasionally shallow or repetitive. Overall, the story is considered a strong complement to the solid gameplay, offering a lighthearted, amusing experience for fans of metroidvania and RPG genres.

    • “The game offers references to lots of nerdy things, a funny story with the relationship between Daniel and the ghost, and lots of options to create a character to your liking. The ending is really cool!”
    • “The main character, Daniel, is the victim of a botched possession by a spirit named Zeral in the early moments, and the two banter with each other throughout the story as they share the same body.”
    • “The story is surprisingly good if you give it a chance, and the voice acting is actually pretty damn good.”
    • “The plot is your run-of-the-mill 'a nerd is somehow transported to an actual fantasy and demonstrates his knowledge of fantasy tropes to become a true hero', but it portrays the protagonist (and, by extension, all geek culture) in an extremely ugly, cringy, unfunny, unlikeable, and pitiful light.”
    • “The story is shoddy, filled with unlikable characters and completely unfunny references to the stereotypical nerdy works.”
    • “The concept and the gameplay were solid but the story had some serious cringey parts, enough so that I couldn't enjoy it.”
  • gameplay

    535 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Unepic’s gameplay is a solid and deep metroidvania-style 2D platformer with RPG elements, notable for its character customization, varied combat styles, and a unique torch-lighting exploration mechanic. While many praise its humor, loot, and challenging bosses, common criticisms include clunky controls—especially jump mechanics—some frustrating and poorly telegraphed boss fights, pacing issues with grind and repetition, and occasional unintuitive or punishing game mechanics. Overall, the gameplay offers a nostalgic, engaging experience for fans of classic RPG platformers, though its rough edges and difficulty spikes may deter some players.

    • “The core mechanic with the torches uncovering every room and leading you into possible death in every corner of the map is truly well done; you will die dozens of times but it's both worth playing and figuring out.”
    • “Gameplay wise, it's something that has already been done, but not in such a good and extensive manner as Unepic: the game allows you to play in a world (more like a castle) in which you'll try to figure out what is going on, by fighting in a 2D environment that still allows a certain depth of combat, with tons of spells and weapon skills, which make the combat mechanics quite remarkable.”
    • “With all the quirks and charms of a passion project, yet still copious content and solid gameplay.”
    • “The actual gameplay is where the game seriously starts falling apart; the controls are a bit stiff and take some getting used to (jumps are not adjustable at all; you will always jump exactly the same height and distance, making platforming sections either painfully boring or painfully difficult dependent entirely on whether the developer decided to give you their standard half-body-length margin of error or cut it down to pixel-perfect); the combat is slow and boring, despite there being many weapon types (they all feel pretty much the same--attack speed, range, even animations--making the game way more about raw stat values than personal play style preferences, and making you wonder why the game forces you to choose a weapon group to spend points in to raise your proficiency when it all seems so arbitrary, especially when the game throws out the window any sort of sense it had been making before, when it starts giving you daggers that are stronger than axes of comparable level); enemies, while having many different appearances, tend to fall into very general categories (runs-at-you, shoots-at-you, doesn't-move-at-all, or ignores-you-and-patrols), making the already slow and boring combat now also tedious; boss encounters are incredibly boring, having very basic attack patterns you learn in just a couple seconds and essentially being damage sponges with unfair expectations of positioning using the stiff and monotonous jumps to avoid attacks that deal 30% or more of your maximum hp.”
    • “Starts out strong and challenging, and continues to be decent fun for a good while... until you reach the latter half of the game where it takes a steep nosedive: the gameplay becomes nothing but a chore, seemingly for the sake of wasting time, and the game turns utterly unenjoyable.”
    • “The jump mechanic is terrible; instead of pressing a button to jump, you press up on the directional pad/joystick, and it's amazing how many times the character just decides to leap into lava, an abyss of spikes, or similar fatal traps when you absolutely didn't want that.”
  • graphics

    184 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
46% positive mentions, 49% neutral mentions, 5% negative mentions

The graphics received mixed feedback, with many appreciating the charming, retro 2D pixel art that fits the game's old-school metroidvania style and atmosphere, though some found it outdated, inconsistent, or unpolished. While not high-end or flashy, the visuals generally complement the gameplay and humor, appealing especially to fans of classic platformers, though they may deter players seeking modern, polished graphics. Overall, the art style is seen as functional and nostalgic rather than a standout feature.

    • “The castle, its inhabitants, its environs, and all related graphical representations, effects, and outcomes produce a magnificent and chimerical two-dimensional environment to search and to conquer.”
    • “The graphics are excellent for the genre, and I quite like how lighting is handled.”
    • “The graphics add to the old school feel of the game.”
    • “Visuals feel unpolished and inconsistent.”
    • “Some rooms don’t fit the game art style.”
    • “Very cheap graphics, tiny spritework that makes it nearly impossible to see what's going on, mediocre controls and interaction responsiveness.”
  • music

    80 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
41% positive mentions, 55% neutral mentions, 4% negative mentions

The music in the game is generally described as solid and fitting, with several zones featuring enjoyable and atmospheric tracks that complement the gameplay and visuals. However, some users find the soundtrack repetitive, with short loops—particularly during boss battles—that can become annoying over time. While the music is praised for enhancing immersion and mood, it is not considered particularly memorable or exceptional overall.

    • “Each castle area is unique, with great music and new quests to complete.”
    • “The music is enjoyable and compliments the feeling of the game and the situation at hand and never felt out of place.”
    • “Great gameplay (metroidvania style) plenty of loot, from plain to legendary and all categories in between, fantastic characters and bosses that range in difficulty (I played in hard ++) the levels are varied and the soundtracks are outstanding.”
    • “Boss music is a 5 second loop that made me mute the music.”
    • “Music is ok but could be better, especially since the loops in the tracks are very short and the repetition is quite noticeable, especially in long boss-battles.”
    • “The music is also well composed, but it's nothing special.”
  • grinding

    78 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
1% positive mentions, 2% neutral mentions, 97% negative mentions

The game features a significant amount of grinding, particularly for resources, potions, and leveling, which many players find tedious and slow-paced, especially after the initial hours. Some boss fights and specific mechanics exacerbate the grind, making progression feel repetitive and frustrating, though lower difficulties reduce this burden. While a few appreciate the natural respawn system and occasional strategic depth, overall grinding is seen as a major drawback that hampers enjoyment.

    • “It has a decent balance of feeling both grindy and not grindy at times; I had trouble approaching some of the mobs in the game when they were large groups (especially when they learned how to use ladders), but I felt that the bosses were fair.”
    • “So, with no way to go, no way to progress, no way to level since I hit a softcap and no way to upgrade or prepare without spending several hours grinding for potions and materials, this is where the guy's quest ends.”
    • “Also, the low responsiveness of the combat system and physics make the grinding for leveling a true affliction, considering, also, that enemies vary strategy so often that you'll always have a problem fighting because you don't have the specific weapon/spell/potion/skill.”
    • “If this was a game that presented difficulty elsewhere this would be fine, but in a game where most strong melee goons can be held off by pointing a spear in their general direction and holding space, the bosses' difficulty spikes just bring the game to a grinding halt without providing any useful reward except permission to go back to the platforming segments that the game's actually passable at and the jokes that clearly were the devs' focus when making the game.”
  • replayability

    52 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
42% positive mentions, 52% neutral mentions, 6% negative mentions

The game offers high replayability through diverse character builds, skill development, multiplayer modes, and extensive user-generated content via a level editor and workshop support. While some find replay value enhanced by multiple endings and challenges, others note limitations due to static game worlds and lack of new game+ modes. Overall, the combination of solid gameplay, multiplayer interaction, and community content significantly extends its replay potential.

    • “The game definitely has replay value, though it is just as fun if you intend to just go from beginning to end to beat it rather than to explore different character builds.”
    • “There are also some really good fan maps in the Steam workshop which could potentially add hundreds of hours of replayability.”
    • “Along with online multiplayer, and the ability to create and share your maps with friends, gives this game a lot of replayability.”
    • “Even though this creates a fair level of replayability, nothing else about the game world or enemies therein changes, making repeated playthroughs dull and uninteresting in comparison to the first time around.”
    • “There is only one save point in the whole map and the game quicksaves without warning you (there's even an item you can buy which alerts to the fact that the game is about to quick save), this is an attempt to artificially design replayability.”
    • “The game has no replay value, yet success requires that you make all of your important decisions upfront.”
  • atmosphere

    16 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
63% positive mentions, 18% neutral mentions, 19% negative mentions

The game's atmosphere is richly crafted through moody lighting, expert pixel art, and an atmospheric soundtrack that evoke a mysterious, retro, and immersive world. A clever blend of dark, sinister tones and lighthearted humor adds depth and intrigue, creating an engaging ambiance reminiscent of classic dungeon crawlers. While some find the humor polarizing and the graphics somewhat generic, the overall atmospheric experience is praised for its mood, storytelling, and captivating exploration.

    • “The luminescence emitted from items such as lighters, candles, candelabra, torches, and other sources produce moody illuminations and a mysterious ambiance, further enhancing the atmospheric effects of the darkened environs of the game world.”
    • “Pixel art and other corresponding artistic work are expertly crafted, creating a retro and nostalgic atmosphere that is pleasing to the eyes, as well as a delight to experience with all senses.”
    • “The art style was more than cool... the atmosphere was trippy and the overarching story was just enough to keep you super interested in moving along in the world.”
    • “Rogue-like atmosphere, but maybe not mechanics.”
    • “The humour in the dialogues was sometimes just a bit too crude for me, but overall it adds a light touch to the dark dungeon atmosphere.”
    • “Spoiler: after the first few minutes you can find a checkpoint to save & rest without worry and continue later. As you delve deeper into the dungeons, it makes you feel like you are in Diablo 1 Catacombs. The atmosphere is sinister like that, which I love, but the jokes are just okay; Zera will make some punny quotes.”
  • stability

    15 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
20% positive mentions, 0% neutral mentions, 80% negative mentions

The game's stability is mixed, with single-player generally stable and mostly bug-free, while multiplayer suffers from notable bugs, lag, and glitches that impact gameplay. Some users report crashes, resource losses, and interface issues, especially during boss fights or on certain platforms. Overall, it feels like an early access title with a stable single-player but a still problematic multiplayer experience.

    • “It's also pretty much bug-free.”
    • “No glitches at all, seems like a finished product, not your average early access garbage.”
    • “It's an early access game but single player is done and so far not buggy.”
    • “The game starts okay enough, but the smug overly self-aware humor wears thin quickly, the difficulty isn't worth the payoff, and in the end I uninstalled after a mid-game boss battle caused glitches that caused losses of too many of my resources to be worth continuing.”
    • “I tried to play it on Ubuntu and Windows, and both are buggy.”
    • “My biggest problem with the game are the glitches that prevent you from doing what the game wants you to do, such as lag issues starting you in danger of the next map, and the inability to toggle the targeting feature on or off which we have yet to figure out the cause.”
  • character development

    8 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
38% positive mentions, 24% neutral mentions, 38% negative mentions

Character development in the game is praised for its fluency and depth, with engaging, funny, and well-rounded characters that enhance player investment. While the story follows a linear path, the non-linear character progression offers meaningful choices and replayability. Both core mechanics and narrative elements contribute to a satisfying character growth experience.

    • “The character development also offers a number of hooks to become invested in either the player character or its unlikely side-kick.”
    • “The character development in both crunch and fluff is well done.”
    • “Played it through, but considering the possibilities of the character development it is worth playing again.”
    • “While you have non-linear character development, you have a very linear storyline and skill set required for progression.”
    • “Played it through, but considering the possibilities of the character development, it is worth playing again.”
    • “The character development also offers a number of hooks to become invested in either the player character or its unlikely sidekick.”
  • emotional

    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
100% positive mentions, 0% neutral mentions, 0% negative mentions

Users express strong negative emotions, feeling betrayed by the game, and advise avoiding it until significant server improvements are made.

    • “Ignoring the negative aspects creates a wholesome and unique emotional experience.”
    • “The game evoked a profound feeling of betrayal.”
  • optimization

    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
50% positive mentions, 0% neutral mentions, 50% negative mentions

The game's optimization delivers consistently high frame rates and smooth technical performance, but suffers from poor multiplayer coding, causing lag-related delays and teleportation issues that negatively impact gameplay.

    • “Technical performance is excellent, remaining at a constant 144 frames per second with little to no noticeable drops.”
    • “You get delays that are like 1-2 seconds long and you get randomly teleported across the screen. Projectiles and such are all calculated from the host without any leniency for lag, so you can guess how that will be. The game's code does not feel optimized for multiplayer at all.”
  • monetization

    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
0% positive mentions, 0% neutral mentions, 100% negative mentions

Users criticize the game's monetization for intrusive and persistent in-game advertising, particularly promoting upcoming titles in a tacky manner. Complaints include unremovable spam ads cluttering inventories, leading to a negative experience.

    • “Side-note: advertising the 'next developed' game inside your 'first developed' game is really tacky.”
    • “Having this game in my library caused me to have un-deletable spam ads in my inventory.”
