  • The dialogue can be overly crude and juvenile, which may not appeal to all players.

  • humor
    484 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in "Unepic" is a mixed bag, characterized by a blend of pop culture references, nerdy jokes, and juvenile humor that can be both entertaining and off-putting. Many players appreciate the game's self-aware, tongue-in-cheek style, finding it hilarious and engaging, while others criticize it for being overly crude or relying too heavily on clichés and references without depth. Overall, the humor resonates well with fans of geek culture, though it may not appeal to everyone due to its sometimes immature tone.

    • “The humor is great, tight gameplay, easily worth the cost.”
    • “The story is funny and interesting, with well-written characters.”
    • “The dialogue is clever and enjoyable, and almost always funny.”
    • “The writing is stereotypical, immature, unfunny, and annoying.”
    • “The plot is your run-of-the-mill 'a nerd is somehow transported to an actual fantasy and demonstrates his knowledge of fantasy tropes to become a true hero', but it portrays the protagonist (and, by extension, all geek culture) in an extremely ugly, cringy, unfunny, unlikeable, and pitiful light.”
    • “The story is shoddy, filled with unlikable characters and completely unfunny references to the stereotypical nerdy works.”
  • gameplay
    345 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay of the game is a mixed bag, with many players praising its nostalgic metroidvania style, solid RPG mechanics, and engaging humor, while others criticize clunky controls, tedious mechanics, and a steep decline in enjoyment during the latter stages. Players appreciate the depth of character customization and the variety of combat options, but some find the gameplay repetitive and marred by frustrating mechanics that detract from the overall experience. Overall, while the game offers a fun and challenging experience for some, it also has significant flaws that may hinder enjoyment for others.

    • “Here you have it all: excellent gameplay, options, replayability, level design, enemies, development of skills, good weapons, nostalgia.”
    • “The gameplay is great and satisfactory; there's a load of weapons, spells, items, pets that fight for you, you name it.”
    • “Unepic captures the essence of the gameplay but in a different visual style and tone.”
    • “Starts out strong and challenging, and continues to be decent fun for a good while... until you reach the latter half of the game where it takes a steep nosedive: the gameplay becomes nothing but a chore, seemingly for the sake of wasting time, and the game turns utterly unenjoyable.”
    • “The actual gameplay, however, is where the game seriously starts falling apart; the controls are a bit stiff and take some getting used to (jumps are not adjustable at all; you will always jump exactly the same height and distance, making platforming sections either painfully boring or painfully difficult dependent entirely on whether the developer decided to give you their standard half-body-length margin of error or cut it down to pixel-perfect); the combat is slow and boring, despite there being many weapon types (they all feel pretty much the same--attack speed, range, even animations--making the game way more about raw stat values than personal play style preferences, and making you wonder why the game forces you to choose a weapon group to spend points in to raise your proficiency when it all seems so arbitrary, especially when the game throws out the window any sort of sense it had been making before, when it starts giving you daggers that are stronger than axes of comparable level); enemies, while having many different appearances, tend to fall into very general categories (runs-at-you, shoots-at-you, doesn't-move-at-all, or ignores-you-and-patrols), making the already slow and boring combat now also tedious; boss encounters are incredibly boring, having very basic attack patterns you learn in just a couple seconds and essentially being damage sponges with unfair expectations of positioning using the stiff and monotonous jumps to avoid attacks that deal 30% or more of your maximum hp.”
    • “The gameplay is lackluster, being bogged down by clunky menus and controls that require too much work to get a good configuration.”
  • story
    328 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story of the game is a unique blend of humor and fantasy, often drawing on pop culture references and Dungeons & Dragons themes. While many players appreciate its comedic elements and engaging character interactions, some criticize it for being juvenile or shallow at times. Overall, the narrative is entertaining and provides a fun backdrop for the gameplay, though opinions vary on its depth and execution.

    • “The way the story is written is like a cleverly woven movie.”
    • “The story is unique and funny.”
    • “The story is entertaining, too.”
    • “This game has a pretty bland story, combat, and a god-awful platforming.”
    • “The story feels like it was changed in a completely different direction at several points.”
    • “The story is shoddy, filled with unlikable characters and completely unfunny references to the stereotypical nerdy works.”
  • graphics
    98 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics of the game are a mix of retro pixel art and simple designs, often evoking nostalgia for classic titles, though opinions vary widely. While some players appreciate the charming and atmospheric visuals, others find them dated and unremarkable, with inconsistent art styles across different areas. Overall, the consensus suggests that while the graphics may not be the game's strongest aspect, they complement the engaging gameplay and humorous storytelling.

    • “The castle, its inhabitants, its environs, and all related graphical representations, effects, and outcomes, produce a magnificent and chimerical two-dimensional environment to search and to conquer.”
    • “+ graphic design: it was awesome, nostalgic enough to remind you of Amiga era classics, modern enough to make everything visible and easy on the eye.”
    • “The graphics are nice, and it's easy to run on old machines.”
    • “The graphics are maybe 20+ years out of date, though not unappealing.”
    • “Graphics are nothing special.”
    • “The 2D amateurish graphics are noticeably dated and the controls are pretty simple.”
  • grinding
    54 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The grinding aspect of the game has received mixed reviews, with many players finding it tedious and repetitive, particularly in relation to achievements and boss encounters. While some appreciate the natural respawn of enemies that can make grinding feel less burdensome, others criticize the lack of meaningful rewards and the overall monotony of combat and leveling. Overall, the game struggles to balance enjoyable gameplay with the grindy elements, leading to frustration for some players.

    • “It has a decent level of feeling both grindy and not grindy at times; I had trouble approaching some of the mobs in the game when they were just large groups (especially when they learned how to use ladders), but I felt that the bosses were fair.”
    • “The entire skill system feels like a superfluous, tedious piece of vestigial RPG wonkery.”
    • “However, it quickly devolves into a tedious and monotonous game with little substance, especially in the final act of the game.”
    • “Your only strategy becomes: do some damage, die, come back, do a little more damage... etc. It's so time-consuming and tedious!”
  • music
    49 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game receives mixed reviews, with some players praising its enjoyable themes and atmospheric quality, while others criticize its repetitiveness and lack of variety, particularly during boss battles. Although certain tracks stand out, many find the overall soundtrack to be unremarkable or forgettable. Despite these criticisms, the music generally complements the gameplay and enhances the overall experience.

    • “The music is enjoyable and complements the feeling of the game and the situation at hand, and never felt out of place.”
    • “It has great music (for the most part) and really good dialogues to guide the player through the solid story.”
    • “The art style is neat and the music is atmospheric, making this a game that I have already told friends about and am more than happy to recommend to gamers that enjoy RPGs, character customizing, action-platforming, or amusing stories.”
    • “Alas, the soundtrack is limited to certain regions.”
    • “Boss music is a 5-second loop that made me mute the music.”
    • “The music is okay, but definitely nothing special.”
  • replayability
    33 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's replayability is generally viewed positively, with many players appreciating the variety of character builds, multiplayer options, and community-created content through Steam Workshop, which can significantly extend playtime. However, some critics note that the lack of changes in the game world and a single save point can lead to repetitive experiences in subsequent playthroughs. Overall, while there are elements that enhance replayability, such as challenges and level editors, some players feel that the game could benefit from additional features to further encourage replay.

    • “The game offers multiple builds and a fair amount of replayability.”
    • “There are also some really good fan maps in the Steam Workshop which could potentially add hundreds of hours of replayability.”
    • “Great replayability, your choice for any type of character, and funny as hell.”
    • “Even though this creates a fair level of replayability, nothing else about the game world or enemies therein changes, making repeated playthroughs dull and uninteresting in comparison to the first time around.”
    • “The game has no replay value, yet success requires that you make all of your important decisions upfront.”
    • “But the gameplay is poor and only driven by the story, so the replayability is low.”
  • stability
    11 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's stability is a mixed bag, with some players experiencing significant glitches and bugs, particularly during boss battles and in multiplayer mode. While some users report a relatively bug-free single-player experience, others have encountered issues that hinder gameplay, such as lag and menu organization problems. Overall, the game shows promise but still requires further refinement to address its stability concerns.

    • “It's also pretty much bug-free.”
    • “No glitches at all; it seems like a finished product, not your average early access garbage.”
    • “It's an early access game, but the single player is done and so far not buggy.”
    • “The game starts okay enough, but the smug overly self-aware humor wears thin quickly, the difficulty isn't worth the payoff, and in the end I uninstalled after a mid-game boss battle caused glitches that resulted in the loss of too many of my resources to be worth continuing.”
    • “I tried to play it on Ubuntu and Windows, and both are buggy.”
    • “My biggest problem with the game are the glitches that prevent you from doing what the game wants you to do, such as lag issues starting you in danger of the next map, and the inability to toggle the targeting feature on or off which we have yet to figure out the cause.”
  • atmosphere
    10 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's atmosphere is characterized by moody illuminations from various light sources, creating a mysterious and immersive environment. The retro pixel art and well-crafted graphics contribute to a nostalgic feel, while the music enhances the overall ambiance. Despite some generic elements, the blend of humor, intriguing quests, and a sinister dungeon atmosphere effectively engages players, making it a recommendable experience for fans of RPGs and action-platformers.

    • “The luminescence emitted from items such as lighters, candles, candelabra, torches, and other sources produce moody illuminations and a mysterious ambiance, further enhancing the atmospheric effects of the darkened environs of the game world.”
    • “- Pixel art and other corresponding artistic work are expertly crafted, creating a retro and nostalgic atmosphere that is pleasing to the eyes, as well as a delight to experience with all senses.”
    • “The art style is neat and the music is atmospheric, making this a game that I have already told friends about and am more than happy to recommend to gamers that enjoy RPGs, character customizing, action-platforming, or amusing stories.”
    • “This game represents a mixture of nerdy humor, old-school gameplay, and an atmosphere of continuing intrigue.”
    • “Spoiler: after the first few minutes, you can find a checkpoint to save and rest without worry and continue later as you delve deeper into the dungeons. The atmosphere is sinister, reminiscent of Diablo 1's catacombs, which I love, but the jokes are just okay.”
    • “It also has a great sense of humor (or terrible, depending on your view), which will at least cause you to smile. Despite being full of comedic references, it still manages to maintain a serious atmosphere, and the puzzles for each quest are cleverly designed, forcing you to think outside the box rather than blindly completing the quests.”
  • character development
    5 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Character development is praised for its non-linear progression and engaging storytelling, featuring humorous characters and well-crafted relationships that encourage player investment. While the narrative follows a linear path, the depth of character development adds richness to the overall experience.

    • “The character development in both crunch and fluff is well done.”
    • “Funny characters and great character development.”
    • “While you have non-linear character development, you have a very linear storyline and the skill set required for progression.”
    • “The character development also offers a number of hooks to become invested in either the player character or its unlikely sidekick.”
    • “But enough about story and character development, let's get to raw gameplay.”
  • optimization
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Overall, the game's optimization is mixed; while it maintains a solid technical performance with a consistent 144 frames per second, players experience significant delays and issues with lag in multiplayer, leading to frustrating teleportation and projectile calculation problems.

    • “The technical performance is excellent, remaining at a constant 144 frames per second with little to no noticeable drops.”
    • “The game's optimization allows for smooth gameplay, ensuring that performance remains consistent even during intense action sequences.”
    • “I appreciate how the developers have focused on optimization, making the game run seamlessly on a variety of hardware configurations.”
    • “You experience delays of 1-2 seconds, and you get randomly teleported across the screen. Projectiles are calculated from the host without any leniency for lag, which makes the gameplay frustrating. The game's code does not feel optimized for multiplayer at all.”
    • “The optimization is severely lacking, leading to frequent stutters and frame drops that ruin the overall experience.”
    • “I often encounter long loading times and performance issues that make the game feel unpolished and frustrating to play.”
  • monetization
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Reviewers find the monetization strategy of advertising upcoming games within existing titles to be unappealing and poorly executed, describing it as a tacky approach that detracts from the overall experience.

    • “Advertising the 'next developed' game inside your 'first developed' game is really tacky.”
    • “The monetization strategy feels overly aggressive and detracts from the overall experience.”
    • “It's frustrating to see so many paywalls that limit gameplay unless you spend extra money.”
  • emotional
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Players express feelings of betrayal, indicating that the game's narrative or character decisions evoke strong emotional responses that leave them feeling let down.
