The gameplay of "Umbrella Corps" is a mixed bag, with some players appreciating its fast-paced, competitive nature and unique mechanics, while others criticize its clunky controls, poor performance, and chaotic multiplayer experience. While the single-player mode offers some enjoyable moments, many find the overall execution lacking, with issues such as awkward camera angles and unbalanced gameplay detracting from the experience. Despite its flaws, some fans of the Resident Evil franchise may still find fun in its arcade-style action and team-based gameplay.
“The fast-paced gameplay is a breath of fresh air compared to the traditional Resident Evil titles.”
“The blend of horror elements with competitive gameplay really captures the essence of the Resident Evil franchise while offering a unique twist.”
“Umbrella Corps is a surprisingly fast and, dare I say it, a fun shooter based on the short hands-on time I had with this game.”
“Umbrella Corps' single player isn't convincing and, what is worse, its multiplayer is confusing and chaotic, mostly because of its clunky mechanics and horrible performance.”
“What could have been a playful romp through Resident Evil settings is bogged down by terrible mechanics and boring objectives.”
“Terrible gameplay mechanics, repetitive, offers nothing new, unbalanced, and game modes are also lacking.”

The game's story is widely criticized for being minimal and poorly executed, with many players describing it as lacking depth and coherence. The single-player mode consists mainly of repetitive missions with only brief text descriptions providing context, leading to a perception that there is no real narrative to engage with. Overall, players express disappointment in the absence of cutscenes and a fleshed-out storyline, which detracts from the overall experience.
“I wish it got a little more love from its players and that Capcom put a little more effort into a solid story.”
“Would've been nice to see that story more fleshed out with other characters and actual cutscenes.”
“If they had added more of a story like they originally intended, it would have made it more enjoyable.”
“I hesitate to even call it a story because you're playing as an Umbrella Corps soldier in training, and the only story items you have to go off of are the mission descriptions. It's just one dude being surprised you survived your last mission and criticizing every person he vaguely references.”
“There are no cutscenes, and the little bit of writing that is there in the so-called single-player story campaign is awful, pointless, and borderline embarrassing.”
“The experiment is a joke where you do the same thing over and over: 'collect DNA samples' for 24 missions. The online community is dead already, and the cover system is absolutely useless.”

The graphics of the game receive mixed reviews, with some praising the immersive atmosphere and character models as top-notch, while others criticize the presence of low-resolution textures and a lack of graphical options. Overall, many players find the graphics to be decent, especially for a Unity engine title, but some feel they fall short compared to other games released in 2016.
“Graphics and sound design are top-notch, creating an immersive atmosphere that perfectly captures the creepy vibes of the Resident Evil world.”
“Excellent graphics for a Unity engine; I am quite surprised.”
“Among the pros of the game, we have the graphics and the way the game overall looks, and its deep level of character and weapon customization.”
“The textures and graphics are also lacking compared to the other games that came out in 2016.”
“This game has the worst graphical quality I have seen in 2016.”
“I play under 4K resolution but the graphics look like something under 720p.”

Overall, the optimization of the game is a mixed bag; while some players report smooth performance and good visuals at high frame rates, many others experience significant issues such as crashes, low frame rates, and poor controls, particularly on lower-end hardware. The multiplayer experience suffers from lag and a confusing hosting system, contributing to a perception of poor optimization. Despite some positive remarks, the consensus leans towards the game being inadequately optimized for a seamless experience.
“It does run at 120fps, has good performance and actually looks pretty great visually.”
“Seems to be optimized fairly well (no fps drops).”
“Refreshing and great gameplay, runs smooth, well optimized, fast action, a lot of tactics - that was unexpected :) buy it now!”
“Good ideas in core and the customization is superb, but it's poorly optimized and I won't give it any more credit.”
“Optimization is pretty garbage, along with the controls and lack of content.”
“After playing about 25 minutes, I had several crashes that didn't let me even complete the maps. The performance is also bad; even on lowest settings, my FPS was dropping to as low as 20, not to mention the really bad animations and controls. The Xbox 360 controller did make it a bit better, but the frame drops and constant crashing made the game completely unplayable.”

The music in the game has received mixed reviews, with some players finding the soundtrack decent but unremarkable, while others criticize it as generic and annoying. Although a few tracks stand out positively, many users suggest that the audio is repetitive and detracts from the overall experience, with some opting to mute it entirely. Overall, the music does not significantly enhance the gameplay and is often overshadowed by other issues.
“Soundtrack actually has a few good tunes.”
“- soundtrack - I want it for my phone lol it's good.”
“I just put on some background music, and try to beat the scores in the singleplayer mode.”
“Audio is reused from lots of Resident Evil games; the soundtrack is okay but nothing fancy. Maps are decent, and gameplay is very reminiscent of Mercenaries for the 3DS, but still very poorly done.”
“This game is just awful to play. It's boring, just the same thing over and over again. Enemies are bland and all look the same. The music is annoying, and the weapon sounds like an empty bottle being smacked against a wall. I tried to like it but gave up after half an hour; I would not recommend it.”
“The music has that generic Call of Duty, Mountain Dew ad dubstep vibe, which can luckily be turned off.”

The humor in the game is described as unintentional and often stems from its absurd mechanics and design choices, such as the player character's limited dialogue and the ridiculous ability to equip a long-range scope on a pistol. Players find amusement in the game's flaws, like the input lag for keyboard and mouse controls, which contrasts with the expectations of competitive gaming. Overall, while the game may not be good, its comedic elements provide some entertainment value.
“I think the release of this is just funny what they tried to achieve with Resident Evil despite having some interesting mechanics to offer.”
“By no means is this game good, however it is hilarious.”
“It only gets a 1 and not a 0 because the text before the 2nd or 3rd mission made me laugh at how dumb it is.”

The monetization aspect of Umbrella Corps is criticized as a cash grab, with no microtransactions present, ensuring fair matches regardless of character levels. However, the game's lack of advertising and negative initial reviews have contributed to its poor reception and perceived unfinished quality.
“Character levels have no effect on matches, and there are no microtransactions, ensuring that matches are fair for everyone.”
“The game offers a balanced experience without pay-to-win mechanics, making it enjoyable for all players.”
“I appreciate that the monetization model is player-friendly, allowing everyone to compete on an equal footing.”
“Umbrella Corps screams cash grab with an attempt at appealing to fast-paced squad shooters.”
“Such a disappointment... it could have been great, but it's such a rushed, unfinished cash grab.”
“The reason it's dead is because of how little advertising the game has had, and the fact that there were a lot of negative reviews on release day because it wasn't your typical Resident Evil game.”

Reviews indicate that the grinding aspect of the game is polarizing; some players find it tedious and reliant on player commitment, while others appreciate the depth of weapon customization that encourages ongoing engagement. Overall, the experience can feel unvaried and forgettable, particularly in single-player mode, but may offer enjoyment for those focused on multiplayer and leveling up.
“Grinding in this game is incredibly rewarding and keeps you engaged.”
“The grind is satisfying and offers a real sense of progression.”
“Not much can be said about this laughable attempt to cash in on the multiplayer market and Resident Evil IP; the single-player experience is unvaried and forgettable, while the multiplayer aspect is limited, zombified (as in dead servers kept online), and relies heavily on player commitment to grinding for experience points to unlock weaponry and customization.”
“You'll need a second life for grinding.”
“Totally not recommended to buy unless you are farming levels with the Steam cards.”

The game's replayability is limited primarily to achieving better scores, as the core gameplay revolves around collecting samples. While the story elements are appreciated, many players find the tutorial more enjoyable than the main game, and the lack of an active online community further diminishes replay value. However, recent patches have improved the overall playability.
“There is an awesome story to the red umbrella and agent 3A-7, but this game is just you collecting samples. The only replayability is to get a better score, and the sad thing is, I enjoy playing the tutorial more than the game. I didn't even get to play online because it's dead.”
“With new patches, it becomes more playable.”

Umbrella Corps review
A crummy ripoff for Resident Evil fans and newcomers alike
30%Umbrella Corps PS4 Review
Umbrella Corps is a timely reminder of how low the Resident Evil series can be dragged into the mire.
30%Umbrella Corps Review
Umbrella Corps feels like a missed opportunity. Looking at how fun and well-implemented the latest Raid Mode was in Resident Evil Revelations 2, Capcom could have made an entire game that was dedicated to nothing but that one mode, and that game would still have been more fun than what Umbrella Corps is now. If you’re in the market for a good team-based, third-person shooter game, look elsewhere. You can certainly find better shooter games that aren’t plagued with sticky cover mechanics and awkward animations. And if you’re looking for the next terrifying Resident Evil game to satisfy your zombie-killing tendencies, this isn’t the game for you either; Umbrella Corps is simply a mediocre third-person shooter hiding under a Resident Evil skin.
