The gameplay of "Umbrella Corps" is a mixed bag, with some players appreciating its fast-paced, competitive nature and unique mechanics, while others criticize its clunky controls, chaotic multiplayer experience, and lack of polish. Many reviews highlight the game's potential for fun in a team setting, but also point out significant issues such as poor AI, awkward camera angles, and unbalanced gameplay that detract from the overall experience. Overall, while it offers a fresh take on the Resident Evil franchise, the execution leaves much to be desired.

“The blend of horror elements with competitive gameplay really captures the essence of the Resident Evil franchise while offering a unique twist.”

“What could have been a playful romp through Resident Evil settings is bogged down by terrible mechanics and boring objectives.”
“Terrible gameplay mechanics, repetitive, offers nothing new, unbalanced, and game modes are also lacking.”

The game's story is widely criticized for being minimal and poorly executed, with players describing it as a collection of repetitive missions lacking meaningful narrative or cutscenes. Most of the storytelling is conveyed through brief mission descriptions, which many find uninteresting and lacking depth, leading to a perception that the single-player mode is merely a tacked-on feature rather than a fully realized campaign. Overall, the consensus is that the game fails to deliver a compelling story, leaving players disappointed and wishing for a more fleshed-out narrative experience.
“I wish it got a little more love from its players and that Capcom put a little more effort into a solid story.”
“If they had added more of a story like they originally intended, it would have made it more enjoyable.”
“Would've been nice to see that story more fleshed out with other characters and actual cutscenes.”
“I hesitate to even call it a story because you're playing as an Umbrella Corps soldier in training and the only story items you have to go off of are the mission descriptions, and it's just one dude being surprised you survived your last mission and criticizing every person he vaguely references.”
“There are no cutscenes and the little bit of writing that is there in the so-called single-player story campaign is awful, pointless, and borderline embarrassing.”
“The experiment is a joke where you do the same thing over and over 'collect DNA samples' for 24 missions, the online community is dead already, and the cover system is absolutely useless.”

The graphics of the game receive mixed reviews, with some praising the immersive atmosphere and character models, particularly for a Unity engine title, while others criticize the overall quality, noting low-resolution textures and a lack of graphical options. While some players find the visuals solid and appealing, others describe them as average or even subpar compared to other games released in 2016. Overall, the graphics contribute positively to the game's aesthetic but are marred by inconsistencies and technical limitations.
“Graphics and sound design are top-notch, creating an immersive atmosphere that perfectly captures the creepy vibes of the Resident Evil world.”
“The graphics are awesome.”
“Excellent graphics for a Unity engine, I am quite surprised.”
“The textures and graphics are also lacking compared to the other games that came out in 2016.”

“I play under 4k resolution but the graphics look like something under 720p.”

The optimization of the game has received mixed reviews, with many players reporting significant performance issues, including crashes and low frame rates even on lower settings. While some users noted that the game runs smoothly at times and looks visually appealing, the overall consensus is that it suffers from poor optimization, particularly in multiplayer modes, leading to a frustrating experience for many.
“It does run at 120fps, has good performance and actually looks pretty great visually.”
“Seems to be optimized fairly well (no fps drops).”
“Refreshing and great gameplay, runs smooth, well optimized, fast action, a lot of tactics - that was unexpected :) buy it now!”
“Optimization is pretty garbage, along with the controls, and lack of content.”
“Piece of shit optimization. 6 GB RAM and NVIDIA processor, and I have to put everything on the lowest setting and far below the resolution I always use, and it isn't even fun.”
“After playing about 25 minutes, I had several crashes that didn't let me even complete the maps. The performance is also bad; even on lowest settings, my FPS was dropping to as low as 20, not to mention the really bad animations and controls. The Xbox 360 controller did make it a bit better, but the frame drops and constant crashing made the game completely unplayable.”

The music in the game has received mixed reviews, with some players finding it generic and reminiscent of "COD mountain dew ad dubstep," while others appreciate a few standout tracks. Many users noted that the audio is reused from previous Resident Evil games, and the overall soundtrack is considered average, lacking in variety. Additionally, the music can be distracting during gameplay, leading some to prefer turning it off entirely.
“Soundtrack actually has a few good tunes.”
“- soundtrack - I want it for my phone lol it's good.”
“I just put on some background music, and try to beat the scores in the singleplayer mode.”
“Audio is reused from lots of Resident Evil games; the soundtrack is okay but nothing fancy. Maps are decent, and gameplay is very reminiscent of Mercenaries for the 3DS, but still very poorly done.”
“This game is just awful to play. It's boring, just the same thing over and over again. Enemies are bland and all look the same. The music is annoying, and the weapons sound like an empty bottle being smacked against a wall. I tried to like it but gave up after half an hour. Would not recommend.”
“The music has that generic Call of Duty mountain dew ad dubstep sound, which can luckily be turned off.”

The humor in the game is described as unintentional and absurd, with players finding amusement in its flawed mechanics and design choices, such as the ability to equip a long-range scope on a pistol and the player character's limited dialogue. While the game itself is criticized, many reviewers appreciate the comedic elements that arise from its shortcomings, making it entertaining in a bizarre way. Overall, the humor is seen as a redeeming quality amidst the game's failures.
“By no means is this game good, however it is hilarious.”
“I also found that the player character sounds humorously similar to Agent 47 with his whopping 3 lines of dialogue upon collecting an infected sample.”
“It only gets a 1 and not a 0 because the text before the 2nd or 3rd mission made me laugh at how dumb it is.”

The monetization aspect of Umbrella Corps is criticized as a blatant cash grab, with no microtransactions present, ensuring fair matches for all players. However, the game's lack of advertising and negative initial reviews contributed to its poor reception, leading many to view it as an unfinished product rather than a worthy addition to the Resident Evil franchise.
“Character level has no effect on matches, and there are no microtransactions, so matches are fair for everyone.”
“Umbrella Corps screams cash grab with an attempt at appealing to fast-paced squad shooters.”
“Such a disappointment... it could have been great, but it's such a rushed, unfinished cash grab...”
“This isn't just a bad Resident Evil game, but a disappointing multiplayer shooter; a spin-off that feels like little more than a lazy cash grab.”

Reviews highlight a significant reliance on grinding for experience points and weapon customization, with some players finding it tedious and unfulfilling, particularly in the single-player mode. However, others appreciate the depth of customization and the enjoyment of multiplayer battles, suggesting that the grinding can be rewarding for dedicated players. Overall, opinions are mixed, with some recommending it for those willing to invest time in leveling up.
“Not much can be said about this laughable attempt to cash in on the multiplayer market and Resident Evil IP; the single-player experience is unvaried and forgettable, while the multiplayer aspect is limited, zombified (as in dead servers kept online), and relies heavily on player commitment to grinding for experience points to unlock weaponry and customization.”
“You'll need a second life for grinding.”
“Totally not recommended to buy unless you are farming levels with the Steam cards.”

The game's replayability is limited primarily to achieving better scores, as the core gameplay revolves around sample collection. While the story elements are appreciated, many players find the experience less engaging than the tutorial, and the lack of an active online community further diminishes replay value. However, recent patches have improved overall playability.
“There is an awesome story to the red umbrella and agent 3a-7, but this game is just you collecting samples. The only replayability is to get a better score, and the sad thing is, I enjoy playing the tutorial more than the game. I didn't even get to play online because it's dead.”

Umbrella Corps review
A crummy ripoff for Resident Evil fans and newcomers alike
30%Umbrella Corps PS4 Review
Umbrella Corps is a timely reminder of how low the Resident Evil series can be dragged into the mire.
30%Umbrella Corps Review
Umbrella Corps feels like a missed opportunity. Looking at how fun and well-implemented the latest Raid Mode was in Resident Evil Revelations 2, Capcom could have made an entire game that was dedicated to nothing but that one mode, and that game would still have been more fun than what Umbrella Corps is now. If you’re in the market for a good team-based, third-person shooter game, look elsewhere. You can certainly find better shooter games that aren’t plagued with sticky cover mechanics and awkward animations. And if you’re looking for the next terrifying Resident Evil game to satisfy your zombie-killing tendencies, this isn’t the game for you either; Umbrella Corps is simply a mediocre third-person shooter hiding under a Resident Evil skin.
