  • The game offers a unique asymmetrical multiplayer experience that combines strategy and teamwork, reminiscent of classic Resident Evil gameplay.
  • The character abilities and customization options provide depth and variety, making each match feel different.
  • The graphics and sound design are well-executed, creating an immersive atmosphere that fans of the franchise will appreciate.
  • The game suffers from severe balance issues, often favoring experienced players and making it frustrating for newcomers.
  • Matchmaking is inconsistent and can take a long time, often resulting in unbalanced matches with high-level players dominating low-level players.
  • The lack of dedicated servers and an effective anti-cheat system leads to lag and a prevalence of cheaters, significantly diminishing the overall experience.
  • gameplay
    335 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay of "Resident Evil Resistance" offers a unique asymmetrical multiplayer experience, pitting four survivors against a mastermind, with each role featuring distinct mechanics and strategies. While the core gameplay loop is engaging and encourages teamwork, it suffers from significant balance issues, lag due to peer-to-peer connections, and repetitive elements that can detract from long-term enjoyment. Overall, the game has potential with its innovative concepts and character customization, but it is hampered by technical flaws and a lack of dedicated support from the developers.

    • “The cat-and-mouse gameplay between survivors and the mastermind can be tense and exciting—especially when taking control of iconic series bosses as the mastermind.”
    • “The gameplay loop is fast and rewarding once the systems are understood.”
    • “The gameplay mechanics are well-designed, allowing for strategic planning and teamwork amongst survivors.”
    • “Because it doesn’t use dedicated servers, it relies on peer-to-peer connections, which can lead to lag, stuttering, and inconsistent gameplay—especially when the mastermind is hosting the match.”
    • “The gameplay is a mess despite a lot of promising ideas.”
    • “The concept is awesome and could have been a refreshing addition to the 1v4 genre, but it lacks in execution, design, mechanics, and playability.”
  • story
    96 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's story is widely criticized for its lack of depth and connection to the Resident Evil franchise, with many players expressing disappointment over the absence of a traditional narrative and character development. While some appreciate the unique gameplay mechanics, they feel that the repetitive mission structure and minimal storytelling detract from the overall experience, leaving it feeling more like a multiplayer game than a true Resident Evil title. Overall, players long for a more immersive and coherent story that aligns with the series' legacy.

    • “The story, sound, and characters of this game were truly unique.”
    • “Their goals are divisive but interconnected within the story that primarily forces playable characters to escape areas orchestrated by their creators.”
    • “There are actual interesting ideas that would've greatly benefited had players been given a simple story to justify these wacky 'experiments' and their fates upon completion.”
    • “However, the lack of significant narrative depth and limited map variety mean that the gameplay loop can feel repetitive over time, especially for those looking for a more story-driven experience typical of 'Resident Evil.' This focus on progression as the main motivator for replayability works well for multiplayer fans but may fail to engage players looking for a longer-lasting or more immersive single-player experience.”
    • “There's clearly a bigger story that wasn't told because it's heavily relying on repeating missions and not giving full context.”
    • “In the end, I don’t recommend this game because it doesn’t feel like Resident Evil outside of using some properties from the games; there is no story, it's not scary, and the worst thing is that the stuff that it does well isn’t that fun.”
  • graphics
    93 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Overall, the graphics of the game receive a positive reception, with many users praising the stunning visuals and high-quality character designs, often comparing them favorably to previous titles in the Resident Evil series. However, some critiques mention a perceived downgrade in graphical fidelity compared to earlier games, as well as issues with optimization and performance. Despite these concerns, the graphics are generally regarded as a strong point, contributing to an immersive experience.

    • “The graphics are gorgeous and ran flawlessly on my system with all settings maxed at 1440p resolution and 60 frames per second.”
    • “The graphics are great for a spin-off of the franchise, and the animations are as you would expect.”
    • “The mechanics and graphics are better than ever for the franchise.”
    • “It is somewhat similar to the work done on RE3 remake, but, as with the visuals, it is much gaudier and overbearing.”
    • “While it does take the same style and graphics of RE2/3, there is a downgrade.”
    • “Bad controls, mediocre graphics for what they've done with those insulting remakes, riding entirely on the stupid 4v1.”
  • monetization
    58 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The monetization model of the game has been widely criticized for its aggressive use of microtransactions and loot boxes, which many players feel detracts from the overall experience and gives the impression of a cash grab. Reviewers express frustration over the game's reliance on in-game purchases, especially given its bundled pricing with Resident Evil 3, and call for a more balanced approach that prioritizes gameplay over profit. Overall, the monetization strategy is seen as a significant flaw, overshadowing the game's potential and leading to a negative reception.

    • “A better monetization model would fund more content such as objective modes, maps, heroes, masterminds, weapons, and cosmetics.”
    • “There are microtransactions, but they only serve to make the game a bit less of a grind.”
    • “The level of detail put into minor details like achievement names, the non-canon yet still amazing lore, and cosmetics that can all be earned in-game without microtransactions shows how much love Neobards had for this project.”
    • “It feels like a cheap cash grab...”
    • “This 'game' is a joke and a pure excuse of a multiplayer game where Capcom can capitalize on its horrendous microtransactions and in-game purchases - thank god that this 'game' is provided to you for free when you purchase Resident Evil 3; otherwise, this would be a pure waste of money.”
    • “The fact that there's also microtransactions is a pathetic, limp-wristed slap to the face, and is frankly unacceptable behavior for a full-priced title.”
  • optimization
    46 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's optimization has received largely negative feedback, with players reporting frequent stuttering, lag, and performance drops, particularly during intense gameplay moments. Many attribute these issues to the reliance on peer-to-peer connections rather than dedicated servers, leading to inconsistent experiences. While some users noted decent graphics and performance on lower-end systems, the overall consensus is that the game suffers from significant optimization problems that detract from the enjoyment and playability.

    • “In terms of optimization, it is a good game; it also has good graphics.”
    • “Hell, even the game is incredibly optimized for most budget-oriented PC builds, allowing it to run at least at 30fps 1080p.”
    • “Re Engine is well optimized, so it runs and looks good.”
    • “The game runs like absolute garbage, stuttering every five seconds. You can't even hardly get through one phase of the game as a survivor because the mastermind just spams traps and zombies all over you.”
    • “And the second reason is: the game is very unoptimized and full of bugs that not only kill the desire to play but also prevent you from playing normally. In most moments, the game stutters very often, it crashes, or the moment you start a match, you are thrown out of the game lobby.”
    • “The optimization is poor, and effects can drop the framerate into the 40s—even if they are on the other side of the map behind multiple walls.”
  • grinding
    46 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The grinding aspect of the game is widely criticized for being excessively tedious and time-consuming, with many players feeling that it detracts from the overall enjoyment. Users report needing to invest significant hours to unlock characters, skills, and cosmetics, often leading to frustration due to the reliance on RNG for rewards from loot boxes. While some acknowledge that grinding can enhance engagement, the overwhelming sentiment is that the system is poorly balanced and feels more like a cash grab than a rewarding gameplay mechanic.

    • “A lot of grinding.”
    • “You'll need a second life for grinding.”
    • “The points that you use to buy the loot boxes are so freaking grindy it's unbearable.”
    • “Capcom added loot boxes pretty much pay-to-win, and if you want to get cosmetic chests, it'll take you hours of grinding just to get a box worse than Battlefront 2.”
  • stability
    38 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's stability is heavily criticized, with players reporting numerous bugs, glitches, and connectivity issues that significantly hinder gameplay. Many users experience frequent crashes, menu malfunctions, and desynchronization during matches, leading to a frustrating experience. Overall, the lack of optimization and anti-cheat measures, combined with a low player base, contributes to a perception of the game as a buggy and unstable mess.

    • “Stay far away from this game unless you are willing to abuse cheese builds, glitches, lag, and cheat engine in every match, because you will get curb-stomped by people who do any of these things.”
    • “It's buggy, it's inconsistent, and it's essentially a Dead by Daylight riff because Capcom is allergic to committing to too many good ideas in as many 5-year spans.”
    • “Resident Evil: Resistance had the potential to be a decent game, but if the developers actually took the time to finish the game before it was launched, then it would most likely be a highly liked game. However, Resistance launched half-finished and buggy with unstable and unusable matchmaking that was connected to the mastermind player and region locked, and even after a major update, it still stands buggy and unplayable.”
  • replayability
    32 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Overall, the game's replayability is a mixed bag; while some players praise its unique mechanics, customization options, and multiplayer elements that offer significant replay value, others criticize its steep learning curve and lack of content that hinder long-term engagement. Despite these concerns, many agree that with some adjustments, the game could become a more enjoyable and lasting experience. Ultimately, it provides enough variety and fun for fans of the genre, making it worth revisiting for those who appreciate its mechanics.

    • “All it needs is a couple of tweaks and a dedicated fan base, and it could become one of the more popular Resident Evil games purely because of its endless replayability and fun factor.”
    • “The game's focus on teamwork and outsmarting the mastermind adds a layer of complexity and replayability.”
    • “There's tons of stuff to customize, so the replayability is endless.”
    • “But its steep learning curve, balance problems, and limited replay value make it hard to recommend as a lasting experience.”
    • “All that being said, the core gameplay is decent, but very shallow and with very little replayability aside from that which is artificially created by Capcom in the form of grindy experience grinding for both statistical and cosmetic items.”
    • “Combined with the severe lack of content and replayability in the primary title, however, this is just not worth it.”
  • music
    27 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game has received mixed reviews, with some praising its ability to create atmosphere and tension through varied soundtracks that adapt to gameplay situations, while others find it less inspiring or repetitive. Composed by Jeff Broadbent and Ko-Ta, the soundtrack features memorable themes and ambient sounds that align well with the franchise's eerie tone, though some players have noted issues with glitches and limited options for customization. Overall, while many appreciate the soundtrack's quality and its role in enhancing the gaming experience, there are criticisms regarding its repetitiveness and the inability to turn off certain tracks.

    • “True to the franchise, it utilizes eerie music, sudden audio cues, and ambient sounds to create a palpable sense of dread.”
    • “The music complements the game's tension and atmosphere magnificently.”
    • “Each map has its own different background music to set up the mood for your surroundings, and it even changes according to what's going on at the moment; for example, the music gets more intense whenever a mastermind controls a zombie.”
    • “The soundtrack, contracted out to Jeff Broadbent, doesn't inspire a whole lot within me.”
    • “Awful soundtrack you can't turn off in the options.”
    • “The queue times are as awful as everyone else has stated them to be, and the static black screen with the same 2 minutes of music going over and over doesn't help.”
  • humor
    27 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game is a mixed bag, with players appreciating the creative and funny cosmetics, as well as amusing in-game moments, particularly when playing with friends. However, many reviews highlight that the game's poor maintenance, matchmaking issues, and prevalence of trolling detract from the overall experience, leading to a sense of irony and frustration rather than genuine laughter. While some find the game entertaining and funny, especially in casual play, others feel that the humor is overshadowed by its numerous flaws.

    • “And it had a perfect cut timing of the hilarious line on my screen 'mastermind (opp)'s connection to the lobby is weak'.”
    • “1) Very creative and funny cosmetics with references to other popular genres (love the zombie 'yay' Japanese dance when you bm a whole team of survivors).”
    • “It's very funny while played with friends!”
  • atmosphere
    15 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The atmosphere in the game is generally praised for its well-crafted design, effectively enhancing the gameplay experience with immersive sound and level design inspired by classic horror settings. While the music and ambiance contribute significantly to the tension, some players feel that certain elements, like cheesy voice lines, detract from the overall horror atmosphere. Overall, the game successfully creates a compelling environment, though opinions vary on its depth and originality.

    • “The atmosphere, characters, and setting fit perfectly with this kind of gameplay.”
    • “One area where 'Resident Evil Resistance' shines is in its atmosphere and sound design.”
    • “The music complements the game's tension and atmosphere magnificently.”
    • “It was fun, although the voice lines of the masterminds were really cheesy and took away from the horror atmosphere.”
    • “The characters and the overall atmosphere are more like something from American TV shows for teenagers; Jill is the only one to stand out.”
    • “The thing is: there is no atmosphere, no substance.”
  • character development
    5 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Character development in the game is highlighted by fantastic designs and engaging backstories, with players appreciating the customization options for survivors and masterminds. However, some critiques point to poor animations and gestures, detracting from the overall quality. Overall, while the character design is praised for its uniqueness and visual appeal, there are mixed feelings regarding the execution of animations.

    • “The character designs and their backstories are fantastic, the game mechanics are fun, you can customize the survivors or mastermind and the environments are beautiful.”
    • “At a glance, it may feel like a survival game, like Dead by Daylight, but it deserves praise for its differentiating elements, including high quality graphics and character design.”
    • “I like the character designs of the game and the game looks nice and feels different from Dead by Daylight and Friday the 13th.”
    • “Animations, gestures, and character design as a whole are really ridiculous and poorly done.”
  • emotional
    4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Users express a range of strong emotions regarding the game, from heartbreak over unaddressed issues to frustration and disappointment, suggesting that the experience can evoke feelings of discomfort and regret. The overall sentiment leans towards a negative emotional impact, with some players feeling misled or foolish for engaging with the game.

    • “Resistance has made me feel many strong emotions.”
    • “I gave them a chance before to fix all of these errors, but to hear that they are done and not fixing them is truly heartbreaking.”
    • “Maybe I wanted to complain about what made me feel uncomfortable; thus I could feel better.”
