The gameplay of the game has received mixed reviews, with many players praising the fun and engaging mechanics, particularly in the predator gameplay, which captures the essence of the franchise. However, there are significant concerns regarding balance, bugs, and optimization, leading to frustrations with matchmaking times and gameplay consistency. • “From intense firefights to strategic predator hunts, the game offers diverse gameplay elements that keep you on the edge of your seat.”
    • “The gameplay itself is really well done.”
    • “But from what I know, Illfonic usually doesn't give a damn about players and their needs, especially when it comes to bugs that prevent normal gameplay.”
    • “The game and its mechanics are clunky and, quite frankly, boring.”
    • “Gameplay is buggy as all hell and half-assed, despite plenty of DLC available for purchase.”
  • story
    188 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's story aspect is largely criticized for its lack of depth and absence of a traditional campaign, with players noting that it primarily consists of repetitive missions without a cohesive narrative. While there are audio logs that provide some lore, many reviewers express a strong desire for a dedicated story mode that could enhance the gameplay experience and offer more engaging content. Overall, the game is seen as fun but ultimately shallow in terms of storytelling, leaving players wanting more substantial narrative elements.

    • “As part of a fireteam, you’ll be frantically completing missions, keeping your wits about you while knowing that somewhere out there, the predator is watching… and waiting.”
    • “If they added a single player section allowing the predator to go through a story of becoming a better hunter, this could be a great game.”
    • “The game nails the aesthetic and tone of the first Predator film, down to Arnold Schwarzenegger himself voicing Dutch in a set of audio logs that directly follow the story of the first film (the narrative is genuinely compelling, if short).”
    • “The worst aspect of the game is a total lack of PvE content or a story of any real kind.”
    • “No single player, no story, and no real connection to the movies other than tapes and recordings.”
    • “Very boring, no story mode which could have been really good and all you can do is play against 4 other people as the predator.”

    • “Very fun game, just needs better optimization performance and we're good.”
    • “The server stability seems to be good and there are a variety of settings for PC players, however, the game does have some performance issues at the highest settings.”
    • “Lots of bugs and crashes 4 years from release, terrible optimization, framerate goes all over and overall disregard to anyone trying to join and play now.”

    • “Fun game runs great and looks good even on bad PCs.”
    • “Also, this game runs great too; with my GTX 980, I have to run it on lowest settings, but I still get 100 FPS and the game still looks great!”
    • “Can't use anything besides blades on Predator, but my mates can use the plasma caster, so the game is so functional that it makes Cyberpunk look bug-free.”
    • “Unfortunately, it is very buggy.”
    • “This game is still a complete buggy mess.”
    • “Overall, a fun, casual game, but extremely flawed and buggy, so I can't really recommend it in good conscience.”

Many reviews highlight the fun of playing with friends, engaging in funny voice chat moments, and the absurdity of certain gameplay scenarios, making the overall experience amusing despite the game's flaws. However, some players also note that the humor can be overshadowed by the game's imbalances and bugs, leading to mixed feelings about its comedic value.

    • “This game is good, I promise! Please, more people play it; it's so janky, it's funny.”
    • “But oh boy, screaming to your friend the predator is here, help help while laughing at the same time is amazing.”
    • “I purchased the game on sale and it is hilariously fun.”
  • grinding
    22 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Reviews indicate that the grinding aspect of the game is a mixed bag; while some players find the progression system balanced and enjoyable, others feel it can be tedious and time-consuming, especially for newcomers. Many note that unlocking everything requires significant effort, with some expressing frustration over the lack of skill-based matchmaking and the grind for cosmetic items. Overall, while grinding is present, it is often seen as a necessary part of the experience rather than a complete deterrent.

    • “You'll need a second life for grinding.”
    • “This game is very grindy, has loot boxes, and about $80 worth of DLC characters at the time of this review.”
    • “Also, this game is pretty grindy if you are looking to unlock everything.”
  • monetization
    21 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The monetization strategy of "Predator: Hunting Grounds" has been widely criticized as exploitative, with many players feeling that the developers prioritize overpriced cosmetic DLCs over meaningful updates and fixes. While there are no microtransactions and some cosmetics can be unlocked through gameplay, the overall sentiment is that the game feels like a cash grab, lacking substantial content and support, leading to a frustrating experience for fans of the franchise.

    • “No microtransactions.”
    • “Cosmetics are good and are unlocked through gameplay, rather than microtransactions.”
    • “The game is pretty generous with XP rewards and chest unlocks (there's no microtransactions in this game, just XP/currency use), so even a bad match still means you got something for your troubles and can move on.”
    • “Illfonic 'reacquiring' this game was just a cash grab to release more badly made, half-baked predator skins that cost real money, instead of fixing the game and nerfing things that have been way too overpowered for years now.”
    • “Overall, I can't recommend Predator: Hunting Grounds, even to hardcore Predator fans - the devs abandoned it, it's extremely predatory in its monetization, and overall isn't very balanced nor fun, even with friends.”
    • “Too many bugs with each update, too many cash grab updates (there's been paid DLC every month yet there are bugs that are over a year old), and they just haven't been supporting the game correctly.”
  • atmosphere
    19 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The atmosphere in the game is widely praised for its immersive recreation of the original Predator movie, featuring dense jungle environments, effective sound design, and suspenseful gameplay. While some players note that the graphics may not be the best, the overall ambiance and attention to detail in capturing the essence of the Predator universe contribute significantly to the gaming experience. However, a few critiques mention that the fast-paced nature of the gameplay can detract from the atmospheric tension at times.

    • “Graphics-wise, it isn't the prettiest game on the market, but something has to be said about the foliage and atmosphere; it's just like being inside the movies, and at times seeing the predator leap from tree to tree amongst a sunny backdrop is glorious.”
    • “They really nailed everything from the atmosphere to the looks and movements of the predator, and it's truly awesome to feel like the creature hunting down an elite special forces unit.”
    • “Predator: Hunting Grounds has a great atmosphere, with dense jungle environments, mist, and the squeal of a pig in the distance just to scare you a little.”
    • “The only real issues I have, though, is the atmosphere of the game.”
    • “The atmosphere falls apart when it's so fast-paced.”
    • “I would have been more than fine playing a single-player campaign just for the predator atmosphere alone, but alas.”
  • replayability
    5 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Overall, the game's replayability is highlighted by its engaging mix of first-person shooter mechanics and predator gameplay, offering a fun experience that encourages repeated play. While some users note a lack of meaningful content updates, the steady unlocking of new weapons, items, and cosmetics up to level 100+ provides a satisfying progression system that enhances replay value.

    • “Wonderfully created with its replayability that goes on forever, mixes a first-person shooter with the predator which makes one of the best combinations I have seen!”
    • “Really fun game with a lot of replayability.”
    • “As for replay value, you steadily unlock new weapons, items, and cosmetics all the way up to level 100+, leveling up is not too slow, but not too quick as to burn through everything you can acquire.”
    • “The DLCs have all been simply more playable predators, with no updates adding more maps, weapons, or anything more meaningful.”
    • “4/15 game time / replayability.”
    • “As for replay value, you steadily unlock new weapons, items, and cosmetics all the way up to level 100+. Leveling up is not too slow, but not too quick as to burn through everything you can acquire.”
  • emotional

    • “I found the character arcs to be predictable and clichéd, making it hard to stay engaged with their stories.”
