The game's graphics are widely praised for their charming and colorful hand-drawn art style, which many players find visually appealing and immersive. However, some reviewers note that while the visuals are impressive, they can detract from gameplay clarity and variety, leading to a repetitive experience in combat and level design. Overall, the graphics are a highlight, but they are not enough to compensate for the game's perceived shortcomings in gameplay mechanics.
“Tunche boasts hand-drawn graphics and it pops with a colorful vibrancy that remains soft and enjoyable to look at in motion.”
“The art style is eye-catching, the game runs smoothly, and the combat feels impactful.”
“The art style of this game is gorgeous!”
“The art style also makes it difficult to see where a boss' hit box is.”
“Meanwhile each room is simply a rectangular arena with absolutely no unique hazards or geographic elements, only discernible from other rooms by the different background art.”
“I really like the combat and the art style, but the repetitiveness of each room makes this game almost impossible to play.”

The gameplay has received mixed reviews, with many players finding it repetitive and grindy, particularly due to the simplistic mechanics and lack of variety in enemies and bosses. While the game features appealing graphics and character designs, the overall experience is marred by a lack of engaging content and poorly integrated roguelike elements, leading to a sense of boredom after a short playtime. Despite some enjoyment in the fast-paced action, the gameplay ultimately feels unbalanced and fails to deliver a satisfying experience.
“The gameplay is fast-paced and challenging, making it a must-play for fans of the genre.”
“Characters have simple button mechanics that make it an easy pick-up-and-play, especially with up to four players that can have a go at each run.”
“Great game, art and gameplay.”
“Same bosses each time with really basic but also grindy mechanics, and zone 1 has incredibly boring animals.”
“It hurt my hands after less than an hour of gameplay pressing the same button so often.”
“Four hours of gameplay to defeat the final boss with zero post-game elements besides grinding for more random lore drops is absolutely atrocious, especially with how little content is present the first time around.”

The grinding aspect of the game has received mixed reviews, with many players finding it tedious and repetitive, particularly when facing the same bosses and performing basic mechanics repeatedly. While some enjoy the grind as part of the experience, others feel it detracts from the overall enjoyment, especially given the lack of meaningful post-game content. Overall, the grinding is seen as a significant factor that may deter players from returning after initial playthroughs.
“It's tedious and repetitive.”

“I think the real crux of the game is that the roguelike elements do not mesh well with the beat 'em up gameplay at all, making the game just feel very grindy, which you do not want out of a beat 'em up.”

The game's story is set in a jungle filled with supernatural creatures, featuring various characters with unique abilities, but it lacks depth and surprises, often feeling generic. While some players find the character backstories and art style appealing, the random unlock system for story elements can be frustrating, leading to a sense of disinterest in fully engaging with the narrative. Overall, the story is considered mildly interesting but not compelling enough to sustain player interest through repetitive gameplay.
“The story is centered around a jungle filled with supernatural creatures, and players can choose from a variety of characters with unique abilities to fight through the levels.”
“The game has a cool story and not bad music.”
“The game, like I mentioned previously, still plays great and is fun; the story is well done and the characters are likable and all play very differently.”
“Overall, I am not very interested in the story; it is one of those 'big bad thing came up and we need to stop it.'”
“The story has lots of vague hints about Tunche and bits of background on the characters, but I still don't care enough to wade through the hordes of monsters over and over to level up to make it further.”
“The problem is that these unlockables are completely random, more notably the plot for all characters.”

The game experiences notable stability issues, including frequent freezes and various bugs and glitches, particularly during critical moments like boss fights. However, the developers are actively engaging with the community and are committed to addressing these problems through ongoing updates.
“My one big issue is that I beat the final boss (got the achievement and even a screenshot) six times, but it freezes on the exact same scene. I don't know if I should just let myself get killed by him and start all over instead of using the checkpoint, which means another hour and 30 minutes to get there just before the fight.”
“The game is suffering a little from some bugs and glitches, but the developers are being very active and communicative with the community, and they are working very hard on fixing these issues.”
“The repetitiveness, the scarce content, and lastly, the bugs and glitches.”

60%Tunche Review – A rainforest roguelite
Tunche combines familiar mechanics with a setting that is rarely represented in video games. This keeps the game’s visual design fresh, but the combat is more than familiar and not up to the standard set by other games in these genres. Tunche can’t scratch the side-scrolling beat-em-up action of River City Girls or the honed roguelike structure of Hades. Unforturantely, this means the game’s charming art and characters are at battle with lackluster gameplay.
