TR-49

I really enjoyed playing TR-49, but it’s too wrapped up in its characters for me to totally forgive the fact that I came away from it not caring about any of them. Still, the formula at the center of this one is a winner, and if you’ve already played some of the genre’s very best, TR-49 is absolutely still worth a look.

  • Engaging and satisfying narrative deduction gameplay with clever mechanics reminiscent of titles like Her Story and The Roottrees Are Dead.
  • Immersive atmosphere supported by excellent voice acting, sound design, and a well-crafted mystery that unfolds through documents and codes.
  • Intuitive UI and note-taking system that aid the puzzle-solving process without overwhelming, offering a rewarding experience for logic and puzzle enthusiasts.
  • The story can be confusing or opaque at times, especially near the ending where some found the conclusion abrupt or unsatisfying.
  • Intrusive and frequent voice dialogue interruptions disrupt the reading flow and concentration during investigation segments.
  • Some puzzles rely on guesswork or brute forcing codes, which can feel less satisfying or frustrating for certain players.
  • story
    419 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story in this narrative deduction game is praised for its intriguing, multilayered sci-fi mystery that unfolds through text and audio, offering a rewarding experience for players who actively engage with the archive-based puzzles. While some find the plot complex, cryptic, or occasionally disjointed—particularly due to overlapping narration and a somewhat abrupt or vague ending—many appreciate the game's clever integration of storytelling and gameplay, compelling voice acting, and rich atmosphere reminiscent of titles like Her Story and Return of the Obra Dinn. Despite mixed feelings about pacing and clarity, the story is generally considered captivating, original, and thought-provoking for fans of investigative and puzzle-driven narratives.

    • “Really great worldbuilding and storytelling through such a simple interface.”
    • “The story is predicated on being like reality but with one new technology, and the game layers a bunch of jargon on the technology and forces you to parse between fiction and non-fiction or fiction that affects non-fiction.”
    • “The writing ranges from bad to serviceable, I cared less about the story the more I knew about it, the puzzles are pedestrian, and the implementation is so janky that it actively detracts from the experience.”
    • “Really strong narrative adventure game with fantastic deductive gameplay and great writing, but I beat the game, found all the sources, and got most of the endings, and I have no idea what is going on in the story.”
    • “Tr-49 throws you in the deep end, and at first not only is the story completely opaque, but even what's going on mechanically is pretty hard to understand.”
    • “The game has a lot of concepts and story ideas but often refuses to elaborate, which I find frustrating.”
  • gameplay
    169 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay in this narrative-driven, deduction-based puzzle game centers on inputting and deciphering four-character codes to unlock and explore interconnected archive entries, offering a simple yet engaging loop that gradually becomes intuitive and rewarding. While mechanically straightforward and similar to games like Her Story or Roottrees Are Dead, it combines investigation with a unique interface and rich thematic depth, though some players found the lack of explicit guidance and occasional intrusive elements slightly frustrating. Overall, the gameplay is praised for its satisfying puzzle design, immersive atmosphere, and effective blending with narrative discovery, making it a compelling experience for fans of cerebral deduction games.

    • “I especially liked the mechanics of the machine that forms the main interface of the game, which start out feeling clunky and confusing but before too long become super intuitive.”
    • “The core gameplay loop is excellent.”
    • “The mechanics are great: the game is all about figuring out a mysterious machine's database IDs - each four-character ID code (two letters, two digits) corresponding to a book, article, or diary entry - from clues given in other database entries, and then correctly naming them (the roottrees are dead style).”
    • “Here is a tiny spoiler, but this game has a hidden health mechanic where if you make enough wrong "guesses" you can no longer read the entries you are on.”
    • “I think it is a flaw in a puzzle game to have a mechanic that hinders, and even completely blocks your progress the more errors you make.”
    • “Multiple times during my roughly four-hour playthrough, I was trying to decipher hidden clues in a revision when the radio prompted me to speak to William, disrupting the gameplay considerably and making the problem-solving quite frustrating.”
  • atmosphere
    58 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's atmosphere is highly praised for its immersive and evocative qualities, blending a moody, sci-fi mystery vibe with a lo-fi tech aesthetic and compelling audio design. Exceptional voice acting and a fitting soundtrack enhance the sense of intrigue and tension, making the environment feel intense, engaging, and memorable. Overall, the atmosphere significantly elevates the puzzle experience, keeping players captivated throughout.

    • “Really great puzzle game with nice art, atmosphere, and an engaging concept/narrative that unfolds organically as you play.”
    • “The atmosphere evoked by the visual and audio design is excellent, and the story is engaging yet doesn't overstay its welcome.”
    • “The game's atmosphere is phenomenal, and the puzzles are interesting to figure out.”
    • “The atmosphere: melancholic.”
    • “In a game where clearly a bunch of effort went into the aesthetics and atmosphere, you have these big white boxes appear every 10 seconds.”
    • “The UX was a little crazy to deal with at first, but once I got used to it, it added to the atmosphere of the game.”
  • graphics
    21 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics feature a distinctive lo-fi, WWII-inspired aesthetic that effectively complements the game’s atmospheric storytelling and puzzle-solving. While the visuals are simple and charming, fitting the game's theme well, occasional minor graphical errors and a somewhat clunky interface were noted. Overall, the art style enriches the immersive experience, though the game is appreciated more for its narrative and atmosphere than for high-end graphics.

    • “Beautiful graphics and a riveting mystery storyline.”
    • “Lovely story, great puzzles, stunning visuals.”
    • “The art style definitely fits the aesthetic the game is going for, and the writing is exemplary.”
    • “Most of my time spent playing the game so far was actually done almost entirely without using any of the in-game memory aides or audio-drama options, because of a minor graphics error that affected my screen when I opened them.”
    • “Steam Deck performance was fine at first, but dipped to 30 fps or so after 15 minutes, despite not being a graphically intensive game.”
    • “In a game where clearly a bunch of effort went into the aesthetics and atmosphere you have these big white boxes appear every 10 seconds.”
  • music
    19 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's music is widely praised for its eerie, atmospheric quality that perfectly complements the narrative and puzzle-solving experience, enhancing immersion. Alongside excellent voice acting and sound design, the soundtrack effectively sets the mood, though a few found it repetitive over extended play. Overall, the music is a standout element that elevates the game's tension and ambiance.

    • “The soundtrack perfectly complements and reflects the atmosphere of the game.”
    • “I have a feeling that tr-49 will get discussed in the 2026 in games review-lists as one of those subjectively-objectively perfect games: every part -- the sound design, the music, the voice acting, the characterisation and prose, the mechanics, the game-feel, and the puzzles -- are all executed superbly, cohere with the rest of the work, stand on their own individually, and feel like they're exactly what they want to be.”
    • “Once again, Laurence Chapman does his magic, the music is fantastic and together with the sound effects creates a great atmosphere.”
    • “Sadly, I had to turn down the music as it was too loopy and repetitive after some hours.”
    • “Eerie music and a crackling vintage radio set the mood while Anastasia Wyatt's art and a flickering orange screen set the stage.”
    • “There are fully voiced dialogues in the game and a very eerie atmospheric soundtrack.”
  • optimization
    9 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Optimization reviews are mixed: while the game performs well on the Steam Deck initially, it experiences notable frame rate drops after extended play, and the Shift+Tab overlay causes crashes and hangs. Despite these technical issues, general performance and controls remain decent, though text size may be a concern for some users.

    • “Performance and controls on the Steam Deck are good, though the text may be a bit small for some players.”
    • “Steam Deck performance was fine at first, but dipped to around 30 FPS after 15 minutes, despite the game not being graphically intensive.”
    • “Well written, with strong voice acting performances, and a short playtime that feels appropriate to the game's scope and price point.”
    • “Furthermore, the Shift+Tab overlay performance is incredibly poor; attempting to access the discussion forums caused the overlay to hang and produced a system pinwheel, nearly crashing the computer.”
    • “Steam Deck performance was fine at first, but dipped to 30 fps or so after 15 minutes, despite not being a graphically intensive game.”
  • emotional
    7 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Users have mixed feelings about the emotional aspect, with some praising the narrative framing and voice acting for adding depth and emotional grounding, while others feel the emotional connection is lacking despite the story's potential. Overall, the emotional weight is present but somewhat unevenly realized.

    • “I feel like this added some nice depth to the story and gave it an emotional backdrop that some others of these kinds of games lack.”
    • “The core story is simple and somewhat touching, with lots of hints of an interesting wider world at the edges, and ties to real world elements and works of fiction.”
    • “Voice acting, particularly in radio exchanges, adds emotional grounding and helps balance the otherwise text-heavy experience, reminding players that the puzzle has real stakes within its fictional world.”
  • grinding
    4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Grinding in the game is often perceived as tedious, particularly due to excessive navigation in the note system and repetitive maze sections. While the game provides helpful indicators to ease the process of completing entries, the pursuit of 100% completion can still feel time-consuming and monotonous. Overall, the grind feels lengthy and somewhat burdensome despite its role in enhancing the game's stakes.

    • “Only critique I had was it's a bit short and the maze section tedious.”
    • “I can see that it is all here to give stakes to a threat that is otherwise obscured by the mundane interface of a text-only computer screen, but I found it tedious, considering just how much of it there is in short periods of time.”
    • “Speaking of, the note system had a little too much left-right scrolling which made it tedious to navigate.”
  • replayability
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Replayability is generally limited due to the game's plot-driven nature, with some noting little incentive to replay after understanding the story. However, multiple endings and hidden details offer moderate replay value despite the genre's constraints.

    • “There is perhaps a little less replay value than usual due to the nature of the genre, but still plenty to discover, and multiple resolutions to find.”
    • “The game is good, though it feels too short, and the "information game" genre means replayability is not what you would expect from an inkle game.”
    • “The only downside: voice acting (I respect their effort but sometimes it feels awkward), and close to 0 replayability once you get a grasp of the entire plot.”
    • “Close to zero replayability once you get a grasp of the entire plot.”
    • “The game feels too short, and the 'information game' genre means replayability is not what you would expect from an inkle game.”
    • “There is perhaps a little less replay value than usual due to the nature of the genre.”
  • stability
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's stability is characterized by intentional visual glitches and misspellings that contribute to its retro aesthetic, especially when attempting brute-force actions. While these issues might seem like flaws, they are embraced as a positive and immersive design choice by many players.

  • humor
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor is subtle and understated, often woven into a dry academic tone that combines wit with moments of speculation and unease. This deliberate blend adds a unique, thoughtful charm to the experience.
