Toy Odyssey: The Lost and Found
Roguelikes, as a rule, fail to capture my attention for one simple reason: lack of progression.

About
In Toy Odyssey: The Lost and Found, players help a toy named Brand face his fears in a battle against nightmarish toys. Exploring various environments, Brand gains new abilities and weapons, while players manage his health, power, and item inventory. The game combines action-adventure and tower defense elements, offering a blend of combat and strategy.

- The game features a charming visual style and interesting character designs, making it visually appealing.
- There is a good variety of weapons and off-hand items, along with unique boss concepts that add depth to the gameplay.
- The game offers a unique blend of roguelike and metroidvania elements, providing a fun and engaging experience despite its flaws.
- The game suffers from poor design choices, such as unrefined mechanics and a lack of clear explanations for various gameplay elements.
- Procedurally generated levels can lead to frustrating experiences, including impossible rooms and enemy placements that feel unfair.
- The combat system is clunky, with stiff controls and a lack of variety in attacks, making encounters feel repetitive and tedious.
story
75 mentions Positive Neutral NegativeThe story in the game has received mixed reviews, with some players finding it intriguing and filled with potential, while others criticize it for being disjointed and repetitive. Many noted that the narrative is primarily conveyed through diary entries, which can create a sense of anticipation, but the quest structure often feels grindy and lacks coherence, leading to frustration. Overall, while there are moments of charm and creativity, the execution leaves much to be desired, resulting in a story that fails to maintain player engagement.
“This game takes you on the role of Brandy, a brave new toy that goes on his quest every night to help his good master who is having many nightmares of late.”
“However, the story is fascinating, and each time I find a diary entry, I'm left with a sense of anticipation and terror.”
“Surprisingly, the story is pretty good, and has some twists.”
“The developer was unable to come up with decent level design or game/story flow/plot, so they opted to try to use samey repetitive procgen as a substitute for adding content to the game.”
“Finally, the story is all over the place.”
“I started out being interested in this game and caught up by the story, but it falls short in the end, making you feel unsatisfied both story-wise and game-wise.”
Toy Odyssey: The Lost and Found Review
Toy Odyssey: The Lost and Found is a special type of game that has a really wonderful and childlike atmosphere, with an overlying grim darkness that engulfs the house, and poor Felix's nightmares. Brand is a likeable toy who just seeks to rid his owner of his nightmares, and try to banish the darkness from the house. Memoirs and diary entries from the various family members further pry open the dark mysteries of the situation. While counterbalancing the base defence element of the game, it can become annoying due to the high cost of the defences, and considering that many runs don't produce a lot of cogs until later in the game when Brand is highly powered, it can be a frustrating beginning. Once the early stages have been passed, though, and Brand has started levelling up and completing quests, an amazing experience opens up in what is one of the better action-platformers available on the PS4 in recent times.
70%Plastic bits having nighttime fits: Toy Odyssey: The Lost and Found review
Toy Odyssey is marred with some old-school platforming woes that should not be featured in a 2017 release, but this Metroid-style nighttime toy adventure also provides lots of fun and plays fine enough to be worth the frustration. Lots of difficult platforming challenges and fighting await you in this dark and spooky title, if you can get past the random generation issues and unfair pitfalls.
