The Company Man

The Company Man may not be the most original of 2D platforming adventures, but it certainly makes climbing the corporate ladder a fun (and often outrageous) task. The platforming was enjoyable, beating up bosses was satisfying, whilst the visuals were top notch too – it really does tick a lot of boxes as far as the genre is concerned, even if the adventure itself is a short-lived one that doesn’t really do anything you wouldn’t have seen before. But hey, who needs originality when you’re bashing annoying co-workers and managers over the head with a keyboard, right?

Many players appreciate the artistic direction, describing it as refreshing and full of character, contributing positively to the game's atmosphere.

    • “I loved the art style and the sounds were good.”
    • “It is a very good game, made professionally with stunning visuals and unique character scenes.”
    • “The graphics and details are really top notch.”
    • “No resolution beyond 1080p and no graphical options.”
    • “Came into this hoping for Yuppie Psycho aesthetics applied to a 2D platformer, but unfortunately it fell short.”
    • “Surprisingly, the graphics of the game are solid, but the sound doesn’t live up to the visuals.”
  • story
    14 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story has received mixed reviews, with some players finding it unfulfilling and rushed, particularly at the ending, which lacks depth and resolution. While the premise is seen as humorous and entertaining, many feel it fails to match the game's artistic quality and leaves key character arcs, like Jim's backstory, unresolved. Overall, the narrative is viewed as a missed opportunity that detracts from the overall experience.

    • “The story is funny and entertaining, and so is the gameplay!”
    • “It's a goofy storyline, and challenging gameplay does make it worth the time!”
    • “Finally, while the story appears to have a message on the surface, it can be summed up as, moving up in a corporation takes a lot of your personal freedom away, and even if you rise to the top, you're still beholden to somebody.”
    • “Even Jim's backstory feels utterly unfulfilled, as the ending is just a still image.”
    • “Finally, while the story appears to have a message on the surface, it can be summed up as: moving up in a corporation takes a lot of your personal freedom away, and even if you rise to the top, you're still beholden to somebody.”
    • “I feel like it is too rushed and the story ends immaturely.”
  • humor
    13 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's humor is primarily rooted in its satirical take on corporate culture, offering a mix of clever writing and amusing character designs that resonate with players. While some aspects of the humor may not land perfectly, many find the comedic elements—such as the quirky certifications received for firing employees and the amusing concept of health checkpoints as coffee breaks—entertaining and reflective of workplace absurdities. Overall, the humor, combined with charming art and animation, adds a lighthearted touch to the gameplay experience.

    • “It's so hilarious when the checkpoint to replenish health is a coffee break!”
    • “The sense of humor is on point, and don't get me started on the artwork and animation.”
    • “The story is funny and entertaining, and so is the gameplay!”
    • “The game is only saved by the funny side of the satire; it's not funny in a 'haha' way, more like a chuckle through the nose and 'oh, good idea.' The most amusing part is actually the 'certifications' you receive once you fire employees, not even the actual gameplay.”
    • “The humor feels forced and often falls flat, leaving me more confused than entertained.”
    • “While the game attempts to be humorous, most of the jokes miss the mark and feel outdated.”
  • gameplay
    13 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay has received mixed reviews, with many players finding it tedious and poorly designed, lacking essential mechanics common in platformers, such as a duck feature. While some appreciate the accessible yet challenging nature of the gameplay, others criticize the repetitive level design and frustrating save mechanics that detract from the overall experience. Despite these issues, the game's humor and artistic elements provide some redeeming qualities.

    • “It's goofy storyline and challenging gameplay does make it worth the time!”
    • “+accessible gameplay - challenging and frustrating but not impossible.”
    • “The story is funny and entertaining and so is the gameplay!”
    • “But the gameplay is exceedingly tedious.”
    • “They didn't even implement a 'duck' mechanic, something you find in 99% of platformers.”
    • “The save mechanic through the coffee machines was interesting, but it made the game a chore to play when the hardest parts of the stages are often right behind a coffee machine (i.e. save point), which means you have to run through a large segment of the game that you already cleared to get back to where you died.”
  • music
    12 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game has received mixed reviews, with many players describing it as forgettable or akin to "elevator music." While some appreciate the sound design and find certain tracks catchy, others criticize the overall quality, stating that it detracts from the gaming experience and is often unbearable. Only a few tracks, like the reception music, have been positively noted.

    • “Love the sound design especially the intro music!”
    • “Simple gameplay, but very nice art style, music, animation, and idea.”
    • “Music and SFX are really good!”
    • “I've never heard that in my entire life. I don't know who validated that and who thought it would be a good idea to use that awful music for every single moment.”
    • “I wanted to take a break multiple times in that very short game because the music was so atrocious that I couldn't handle it.”
    • “The music is very forgettable.”
  • character development
    4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Character development in the game is highlighted by impressive character designs and beautiful animations, which enhance the overall visual experience. However, the depth of character development is somewhat overshadowed by the humor found in the game's satire and the amusing "certifications" received for firing employees, rather than through traditional gameplay elements.

    • “The animations, environments, and character designs are all top-notch.”
    • “The character designs are impressive.”
    • “+beautiful animations and details in character design and the background”
    • “The character development feels shallow and lacks depth, making it hard to connect with the characters.”
    • “I found the character arcs to be predictable and uninspired, leaving me wanting more complexity.”
    • “The interactions between characters are often one-dimensional, which detracts from the overall experience.”
  • stability
    4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's stability is criticized for significant bugs, particularly during the final boss fight, which can disrupt gameplay and necessitate restarts. While there are minor issues like controller mapping resets and animation glitches, some players found the overall experience enjoyable despite these flaws.

    • “The final boss was completely buggy, not panning the camera properly in several areas which forced me to basically restart again, made even worse by the fact that the final boss is 2 phases long.”
    • “- unacceptably buggy for a game at this price point.”
    • “There are some minor bugs with controller mapping resetting sometimes as well as animation glitches when you move to an elevator and jump at the same frame or something but the game was pretty fun.”
  • replayability
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Reviewers generally find the game's replayability lacking, citing pacing issues and a short length that diminishes the incentive to revisit it. Many feel that the premise could have been explored more deeply, which would have enhanced its replay value.

    • “The pacing issues really hinder the experience; it feels like they could have taken the premise further, but ultimately, it's too short and lacks any replay value.”
    • “Once you finish the game, there's little incentive to go back. The lack of meaningful choices means replaying it feels pointless.”
    • “The game offers a one-time experience with no real variations or alternate paths, making it hard to justify playing through again.”
  • grinding
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Players find the grinding in the game to be excessive and tedious, viewing it as unnecessary padding that detracts from the overall gameplay experience.

    • “Grinding is just unnecessary padding.”
    • “The gameplay is exceedingly tedious.”
  • optimization
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's optimization has been criticized, with users suggesting that its performance does not justify the $20 price tag, indicating that it may be better to wait for a sale before purchasing.

    • “All in all, if you want to play this, I recommend waiting for a sale, as it's just not worth the hefty $20 price tag, both in terms of the content it offers and its performance.”
