Gameplay reviews highlight a mix of enjoyment and frustration; while the dungeon editor is praised for its charm and versatility, many players feel the core mechanics are lacking and clunky. There are calls for more variety in enemies and features, with some recommending patience until bugs are fixed and additional content is added. Overall, the game appeals to fans of classic dungeon crawlers and level-editing, but it currently falls short in delivering a polished experience.
“Anyone interested in dungeon crawling, classic Zelda gameplay, or interesting & fun level-editing mechanics should definitely give this one a try.”
“After roughly 10 hours of learning the ropes and experimenting with the different mechanics of the editor, I can definitely say that it is worth picking up for any 2D Zelda fan; the dungeon editor is intuitive, satisfying to use, and yet retains the versatility needed to make something unique every time the game is booted up.”
“This game is amazing to say the least, and the developers have done a wonderful job of creating a Zelda-esque maker game with charming graphics and extremely fun maker mechanics.”
“Though the amount of mechanics, items, and tools you can use for your dungeons leaves a lot to be desired.”
“The gameplay was mediocre and felt off.”
“The clunky gameplay as your hero chicken; some controls just don't match what you'd expect or know from other games.”

The graphics of Super Dungeon Maker are characterized by vibrant, retro 16-bit art that evokes nostalgia, reminiscent of classic titles like Zelda. Players appreciate the charming and colorful visuals, which enhance the overall experience, although some note that the village hub's graphics do not match the quality of the dungeons. While the art style is generally well-received, there are calls for more variety in tilesets and skins to further enrich the game's aesthetic appeal.
“It is a top-down combat puzzle-oriented experience with pleasing 16-bit style graphics.”
“The graphics remind me of Zelda, but in a good wholesome way.”

The game's stability has been widely criticized, with many users reporting significant bugs, crashes, and glitches that disrupt gameplay and level creation. While some players note that recent patches have improved the situation, the overall consensus is that the game remains a frustratingly unstable experience, particularly for a paid release. Despite these issues, a few users have found enjoyment in the game, indicating potential for future improvements.
“The game is a buggy mess; I made a dungeon, went back to edit it, saved it, and it fully corrupted the dungeon and editor. When editing dungeons, if you don't do things perfectly, it's liable to break. Honestly, it would be a super fun game, but it's so frustrating to do the one thing the game is built to do.”
“Really painful to say this, but it's just too buggy and rough for a paid release at present, even in early access.”
“Game freezes and crashes a lot.”

The game's story aspect is criticized for its lack of depth and unique content, with reviewers noting that it feels unfinished and more like a cash grab compared to alternatives like "Quest Master." While there are hints of a storyline and potential future updates to enhance worldbuilding, such as NPCs and dialogue, many players feel that the current offerings do not provide a compelling narrative experience. Overall, the consensus suggests waiting for more developed options before investing in this title.
“Missing features that would allow for a greater story (villagers/npcs with dialogue in the dungeon, signs with instructions or fun messages, boss enemy types or at least options for recolor, theme mixing, etc.) might be coming soon though.”
“This game is not finished as of late as the devs are continuing to work on adding a story mode as well as fixing any bugs as they work on the rest of this game.”
“Moral of the story, don't buy games in early access from small devs unless you know it is good.”
“Add decent content like lots more blocks and enemies with a proper story mode.”

The music in the game is generally considered underwhelming, with repetitive sound effects that can lead players to prefer their own playlists. Reviewers express a desire for more diverse music options and thematic variety, as well as improvements to the audio dynamics during gameplay, particularly in boss encounters. Overall, the soundtrack lacks the impact needed to enhance the gaming experience significantly.

“- need more theme and music options”
“- need to fix the music going back to normal when only 1 of 2 bosses die”

Super Dungeon Maker has its fair share of issues, but if you want to make Zelda inspired dungeons with ease you'll have a lot of fun with it.
60%Super Dungeon Maker Review
Super Dungeon Maker has a lot of potential and perhaps with time it’ll become something great. For now, it feels like an egg that still needs significantly more time to incubate before it can hatch. Intuitive creator controls, an endless well of community-crafted content, and charming visuals are all big positives here, but the lack of any overarching progression, no touchscreen controls, and it feeling generally unfinished really hold this one back from being anything exceptional. If you have faith that the developers will eventually realize the full scope of their vision, then we’d certainly encourage you to crack this one open, but those who are more wary of early-access titles will want to wait and see. Super Dungeon Maker is just an average experience for now — here’s hoping that it eventually delivers on its promise.
