The gameplay of "Space Crew" is often compared to its predecessor, "Bomber Crew," with many players noting that while it retains a fun core loop and introduces new mechanics, it suffers from repetitiveness and a lack of depth. Some players appreciate the added complexity and customization options, while others criticize the boarding mechanics and the overall grindy nature of missions. Overall, the game offers a mix of enjoyable crew management and strategic gameplay, but it may not fully satisfy those seeking a more dynamic experience.
“It's well balanced in gameplay mechanics, and in how intense or relaxing certain moments are.”
“The gameplay is solid and fun.”
“At its core, space crew is good fun and its core gameplay is very engaging and deep, getting more interesting as the player unlocks new weapons, ship parts, and crew equipment.”
“I think the gameplay loop can get boring and the main interesting bits are big set pieces or discovering new mechanics.”
“You get about 2 hours of gameplay, then it's the same 2 hours over and over again (and the gameplay is not very compelling).”
“Gameplay gets repetitive fast and the devs abandoned it also.”

The grinding aspect of the game has received largely negative feedback, with players describing it as tedious and repetitive, often involving long hours of similar missions that lack variety. Many reviewers noted that the grind can feel excessive, particularly in the early stages, leading to frustration and boredom as players repeatedly engage in the same combat scenarios. While some found moments of satisfaction in progression, the overall sentiment is that the grinding detracts significantly from the enjoyment of the game.
“It can be a bit grindy sometimes, but it adds to the overall experience.”
“The game is a bit grindy, which can be rewarding if you enjoy leveling up.”
“You'll need a second life for grinding, but the satisfaction of progress makes it worth it.”
“The game quickly gets boring as the missions are highly repetitive and grindy.”
“While this helps to create a rewarding system of progression, unlocking new mission access as you advance through the story, it also means you are going to be stuck grinding the same 3 or 4 boring default mission types for the first few hours of gameplay until you upgrade your ship and crew enough to move on.”
“The biggest issue I see with the game is how challenging it is, even after upgrading your ship by grinding low-level missions.”

“The graphics are stunning and the sound design is top-notch.”
“The art style really makes everything pop and the background skyboxes are amazing, especially the black hole.”
“If you've played Bomber Crew (this developer's previous game), then this is an even better implemented design with better graphics and tighter controls, set in space.”
“The ship layout is very unappealing, plus it looks bad aesthetically.”
“No graphics options whatsoever.”
“Graphics: 2/10 (nobody is playing this for the graphics)”

The music in the game is praised for its extensive and high-quality soundtrack, with unique themes for various situations that enhance the gameplay experience. While many players appreciate the engaging and fitting tracks, some note that the music can become repetitive over time and may not significantly impact the overall game. Overall, the sound design complements the game's atmosphere, though opinions vary on its standout quality.
“The soundtrack deserves special props for its size and quality - basically every situation you can end up in has its own theme, and they're all great.”
“The music was fitting and plentiful with a lot of tense tracks to keep you entertained amid battle.”
“All this accompanied by an excellent soundtrack to act as the backdrop for the many space battles and travels you embark on.”
“- music is nothing special, effects are somewhat lacking”
“- some decent music for combat phase”
“Fortunately, the music can be muted and ol' il pallino recommends the cold warps song science fiction.”

The humor in the game is described as a mix of silly mistakes and entertaining moments, contributing to a lighthearted experience that elicits genuine laughter. While some players found the comedic elements enjoyable, they noted that humor only comprised a small portion of the overall gameplay. The combination of frantic crew management and amusing scenarios, such as funny boarding aliens, adds to the game's charm, making it a fun experience despite its occasional seriousness.
“In fact, I only had to abort a mission once and lost two or three crew members due to silly (and quite funny) mistakes I made, but otherwise I managed to finish the game with one ship.”
“Good difficulty level, decent learning curve, combines a lot of my favorite spaceship mechanics plus some innovative mechanics into a fun and funny game.”
“I'm flying the 'this is fine' and now it's hilarious whenever my starship catches fire or returns all busted up.”

The game's replayability is mixed among users; some appreciate the changing campaign and engaging story that encourage multiple playthroughs, while others find it lacking outside of challenge missions and suggest that it suffers from repetitiveness. There are calls for additional features, such as specialized ships, to enhance replay value, but overall, opinions vary on its long-term enjoyment.
“Plenty of replayability as well, thanks to the changing campaign each time.”
“The game has a great story and lots of replayability.”
“It would be amazing if you could get different specialized ships that could create a new challenge and make the game a lot more replayable, but in the end, what was here was well worth the $20 I paid.”
“This game has little replay value outside of challenge missions after the completion of the first playthrough.”
“I think adding more things that improve replayability would help the game a lot, since it can suffer from that 'repetitiveness' syndrome.”
“So far, while it's really fun...it's missing that something no one can put their finger on...that something that makes FTL so damn replayable.”

Overall, the game's stability is mixed; while many users report it runs well with low system requirements and is nearly bug-free, others experience significant issues such as overheating, freezing, and game-breaking glitches that necessitate restarting.
“It is close to being bug-free.”
“Technically, the game runs great and is pretty low on system requirements.”
“It's broken, it's buggy, it will overheat and lock your PC, and it's all scripted; you don't play the game, it plays itself.”
“My reason for the negative review, though, is that there are a number of bugs and glitches that force me to quit the game and load it up again.”
“High stability makes you safer from attack, but the crew freezes, and only a top navigator can navigate there, and only at night.”

The optimization in the game is straightforward yet requires quick decision-making, particularly with the addition of roles like the security officer that enhance gameplay. While players can develop effective strategies and loadouts, the repetitive nature of combat can lead to a feeling of sameness over time.
“The real addition is the security officer role, who is sort of like the Mr. Worf of your ship - good at close combat (boarders) and can boost your shield performance and do a number of emergency tasks to bail you out of a jam.”
“The crew work optimization is simple, but it still demands some fast thinking.”
“Like TD games, there's a seemingly endless number of baddies to serve as cannon fodder for your cannons, but once you're set in your optimized strategy and loadout, things can start to feel 'samey' rather quickly.”

The game's atmosphere is dynamic and engaging, featuring various environmental challenges such as radioactive comets and random space conditions that enhance gameplay. Players can strategically manipulate the atmosphere to deal with threats, like ejecting boarding parties or managing fires, while new side missions add depth to the experience. Overall, the atmosphere contributes to a fresh and tactical gameplay environment.
“Apart from radioactive comets, there are also other random space atmospheric conditions that complicate situations, which keeps the challenges fresh.”
“The atmosphere feels lifeless and uninspired, making it hard to immerse myself in the game.”
“Despite the potential for tension, the atmosphere lacks any real sense of danger or urgency.”
“The environments are bland and fail to evoke any emotional response, leaving the atmosphere feeling flat.”

“The monetization strategy is overly aggressive, pushing players to pay for basic features.”

Space Crew Review
It’s not the most complex of games, but Space Crew serves its purpose as a decent enough sequel to Bomber Crew. It’s a 4X game with a couple of missing Xs if you will. Poor controls and a lack of variety stop it from being a classic however.
70%Space Crew review — Yellow alert
Space Crew is a reasonable introduction to the Crew series, but it tones down the entertaining chaos and difficulty a bit too much.
