SHAPESHOOTER is literally an on-rail shooter, you'll have to clear colonies across 4 planets from a little creatures infestation called polygoneers. But that's not important, you'll not get a story here. You'll get frenetic action, insane music and a super hard challenge!

The gameplay is described as enjoyable and addictive, but marred by repetitive level design and frustrating mechanics that detract from the overall experience. Critics highlight poor enemy placement, confusing controls, and a disorienting visual design that complicates navigation, leading to a sense of monotony and disappointment. While challenging gameplay can be rewarding, many feel this game falls short due to its reliance on frustrating design choices rather than skillful execution.
“The gameplay itself was enjoyable and addictive, but some design choices made it monotonous as you had to replay the same levels repeatedly to unlock new ones.”
“I've beaten Cuphead multiple times with all A ranks and secret pacifist ranks, and several S ranks as well - 'challenging retro gameplay' in and of itself is not an issue for me when done right.”
“There's a rule in the retro gaming community I've heard a lot to the effect that 'challenging retro gameplay' should not be used as a crutch for poor game/software design, and this game unfortunately embodies that criticism.”
“The gameplay honestly doesn't strike me as anything truly special, and I was surprised and disappointed on this count.”
“To the contrary, as this specifically relates to gameplay: the fact that all of the walls, level boundaries, and tracks are black while the epilepsy-inducing neon backgrounds are frequently mostly dark makes for a uniquely terrible and disorienting experience in which you occasionally have absolutely no idea where walls and traps are, which direction relative 'forward' and 'back' are, and which enemies are in line of sight/shot.”

The graphics of the game are generally well-received, with players appreciating the art style and smooth performance even on lower-end machines. However, some critics feel that the neon aesthetic may have been more of a marketing choice rather than a meaningful addition to the gameplay experience. Overall, the visuals are considered decent but not groundbreaking.
“I think it's a pretty neat rail shooter; I like the graphics style of the game. Well done!”
“On my previous crummy entry-level machine with like 4 GB of RAM and integrated graphics, all of Nuk Games' titles ran perfectly smoothly, with absolutely no issues.”
“While I clearly can't comment on the music or sound effects, the graphics and art are fine - to a point.”
“I feel like the neon aesthetic was chosen specifically for marketing purposes, as it doesn't directly add anything to the game itself.”

The music and sound effects are widely praised as the standout features of the game, enhancing the overall experience. The relentless electronic soundtrack contributes to a psychedelic atmosphere, although some players may find it overwhelming.
“The music and sound effects are the best in the game.”
“Also, the flashing background and non-stop electronic music will complete your psychedelic trip to the slaughter as your brain melts beat by beat.”

Players find the grinding mechanics tedious, particularly due to the unclear confirmation process that requires holding a button, which only slightly changes in appearance. This lack of clarity adds to the frustration of the grinding experience.
“Requiring the player to hold a button to confirm anything is already tedious, but it doesn't make it clear enough what's going on; the button just slightly gets darker or smaller.”
“Grinding feels like an endless chore, with little reward for the time invested.”
“The repetitive nature of grinding makes the game feel more like a job than a fun experience.”
