The music in the game is predominantly heavy metal, with many players praising its energetic and adrenaline-pumping qualities that enhance the fast-paced gameplay. While some find the soundtrack repetitive over extended play sessions, it generally complements the game's hellish theme and humor, making it a standout feature for fans of the genre. Overall, the soundtrack is well-received, contributing significantly to the game's atmosphere and enjoyment.

    • “The soundtrack for this game will leave you headbanging throughout your playthrough and it's absolutely amazing.”
    • “The original heavy metal soundtrack sounds amazing and helps to boost the pace of the game.”
    • “Gameplay seems fine, but the music and the painfully generic hell theme started grating on me immediately and honestly felt really tacky and a bit cringe.”
    • “The music too is nothing to write home about; it is the generic heavy metal style soundtrack that every game that takes place in hell does.”
    • “The game changes visually, but the music stays the same, and since you'll most likely be replaying levels many times, having the same song on repeat throughout the entire game is tiring.”
  • gameplay
    211 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay of "Seum: Speedrunners from Hell" is characterized by its fast-paced, fluid mechanics that blend first-person platforming with puzzle-solving elements, making it highly addictive and engaging. Players appreciate the variety of mechanics introduced throughout the levels, which keep the experience fresh, although some note a lack of depth in certain areas and occasional frustrating mechanics. Overall, the game is praised for its solid level design, smooth controls, and a satisfying challenge that encourages repeated play to improve times and master skills.

    • “Gameplay is fast and tight with movement and shots; graphically, it's more akin to the old school shooters.”
    • “The fluid gameplay focused on speed combined with interesting levels and a great soundtrack made me fall in love with it.”
    • “The gameplay loop is satisfying, as you start by solving a puzzle, then you race through the puzzle looking awesome.”
    • “Gameplay is repetitive and mediocre at best.”
    • “This game was a slog just for the 23 minutes I played of it; the movement is just not fun, and with that being the mechanic where the fun comes from, it does not work.”
    • “Gameplay-wise, SEUM isn't very special compared to other games revolving around speedrunning.”
  • graphics
    110 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics of "Seum: Speedrunners from Hell" are generally described as serviceable, with a nostalgic, old-school aesthetic reminiscent of classic FPS games like Quake and Doom. While some players appreciate the game's metal-inspired art style and vibrant atmosphere, others find the visuals simplistic and occasionally repetitive, with limited graphical options and optimization issues. Overall, the graphics effectively complement the fast-paced gameplay, though they may not impress those seeking cutting-edge visuals.

    • “Incredible speedrunning platforming game with awesome music, themes, and visuals!”
    • “The graphics, considering the game's theme, are awesome as well; sure, upon a closer look they might look simplistic, but that's why you don't have loading screens and I wouldn't trade this for any graphical improvements.”
    • “The aesthetic of the game is well done; music and presentation fit together to create a fast-paced, metal experience.”
    • “The graphics are nothing to write home about, but they're good enough for what the game is.”
    • “Graphics might've just barely been acceptable in 2007, completely unacceptable seeing as this game came out in 2016.”
    • “The graphic style is awful; usually, I avoid the hellish theme completely; it's just not good on the eyes.”
  • story
    83 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story in "Seum: Speedrunners from Hell" is minimal and often described as humorous and silly, primarily serving as a backdrop for the gameplay rather than a focal point. Players embark on a light-hearted quest to retrieve stolen beer from Satan, with the narrative providing just enough context to enhance the experience without overshadowing the fast-paced action. While some find the plot entertaining and fitting for the genre, others feel it is too simplistic and could have been omitted entirely.

    • “The story itself is very proper and not full of any crazy twists or turns, but it's still satisfying enough once you finish the game and see the credits.”
    • “At its core, this game is really a love story about one man and his quest for his lover, Be-ear, who was tragically taken away by Satan. You play as Marty, a sophisticated intelligent man who is able to do high-level mathematics and often uses that knowledge to aid him in his journey for his lover.”
    • “The story is here for half filler and half theme.”
    • “The barely existing story (an introduction and an ending) is silly and needless, but it's good for a bit of a giggle.”
    • “The story is so half-assed I would've been happier if they had just left it out altogether.”
    • “It's not a major part of the game; it's basically just there to give you an idea of why you're going to hell. You only get some story at the beginning and at the end.”
  • humor
    63 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The humor in the game is widely appreciated, with many players finding it funny and well-delivered, particularly through voice lines and character interactions. While the comedic style, which includes elements like toilet humor and heavy metal themes, resonates well with the target audience, some players note that it may not appeal to everyone. Overall, the humor adds a unique charm to the gameplay, enhancing the experience despite occasional repetition.

    • “The humor in the voice lines is hilarious and incredibly well-delivered; the unlockables are even better!”
    • “The game's humorous take on the theme of hell also works very well and sets up a lovely tongue-in-cheek atmosphere, where you feel that you are some beer-chugging badass who jumps across hell like it's nothing, all while bobbing his head to the awesome heavy-metal soundtrack.”
    • “Story is hilarious, with clever dialogue and quips delivered throughout.”
  • replayability
    32 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game boasts exceptional replayability, driven by its speedrunning mechanics, hidden collectibles, and community-created content through a level editor. Players can engage in various challenges, including beating personal and global records, which enhances the game's longevity. Overall, it offers a wealth of content and replay value, making it appealing for both casual players and competitive enthusiasts.

    • “There are permanent collectibles hidden in each mission to add replay value, as well as online leaderboards with replays.”
    • “Every map has so much replay value because not only is there a hardcore time to beat but also there's always a secret to collect on every single map which makes you take a new look at them.”
    • “In a recent update, they've released a level editor for the community to create and share their levels, which was the final push for me to pick this up, because now there is virtually endless replay value, in playing over 200 community-made levels and creating your own masterpiece.”
    • “The core gameplay is fun for a little while, but this game lacks the longevity and replay value (due to the aforementioned cheaters in the high scores) to really be worth it.”
    • “If you're really into speedrunning and precision games you'll probably get more replay value out of this one than I did, but there's not much here that makes me really want to come back to it.”
    • “Replay value depends on whether or not you're the competitive/perfectionist type.”
  • optimization
    21 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Overall, the game's optimization receives mixed feedback; while many players praise its smooth performance and low system requirements, some report issues with controller support and menu hiccups on lower-end devices. The game rewards skillful play with optimized routes, but some users feel additional graphics settings could enhance the experience. Despite these concerns, the majority find the game runs well, with no significant stuttering or crashes.

    • “Rewarding players for being skillful and finding the most optimized route to the end of a level is exactly what I love.”
    • “So a relatively quick, straightforward level completion nets you the normal medal, while figuring out and executing a more optimized run rewards you with the 'uber' medal.”
    • “The controls are butter smooth, the game is optimized better than a German motorsport racecar, the levels are challenging but never unfair.”
    • “Not optimized for controller.”
    • “Fun parkour time limit game, but so poorly optimized.”
    • “The optimization could be better, or maybe some extra graphics settings to toggle.”
  • atmosphere
    19 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The atmosphere of the game is widely praised for its cohesive blend of sweet graphics, humorous themes, and a heavy-metal soundtrack that enhances the overall experience. Players appreciate the game's goofiness and the immersive feeling of navigating through a hellish landscape, although some find certain elements, like the redneck voices, off-putting. Overall, the combination of level design, aesthetic, and engaging physics mechanics creates a captivating and enjoyable atmosphere.

    • “The gameplay is fluid and satisfying, the graphics fit the atmosphere perfectly, and it overall feels like it was actually made by people that used to surf, bhop, rocket jump and what have you.”
    • “Atmosphere is right on point and really feels like you’re in the depths of the earth.”
    • “The flow of motion and controls of this game are great and very tight, and the levels are mostly short enough that you don't feel frustrated having to restart when you mess up at the end or finish too slowly (which is an insta-fail), but I found the metal demon redneck atmosphere off-putting, and even more annoying was the voices of the redneck or the devil each time you finish or restart a level.”
    • “I don't even really know how to describe it; the brutal protagonist Marty, who seems to only care about his beer, Satan, and hell... this atmosphere, in combination with the level design, is the greatest element combination I have ever seen.”
    • “Secondly, doom + Duke Nukem + references = the atmosphere of this game.”
  • grinding
    14 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Players have mixed feelings about the grinding aspect of the game. While some find the fast-paced platforming and the challenge of shaving milliseconds off their times engaging and addictive, others feel that the repetitive nature of grinding certain levels can become tedious, especially in later stages. Overall, the experience varies, with some players enjoying the grind for hours, while others find it frustrating and monotonous at times.

    • “You'll need a second life for grinding.”
    • “I found myself grinding single levels for hours on end just to shave off a few milliseconds.”
    • “The best feeling is grinding the same level for 10 hours straight just to shave 0.002 seconds off my time; still 3rd place, 0.001 behind 2nd.”
  • stability
    7 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Overall, the game's stability is generally praised, with users noting that most glitches have been patched and levels are well-designed, leading to a smooth experience. However, some players express frustration over the removal of certain glitches that previously allowed for top scores, and a few minor bugs have been reported, such as discrepancies in local scoring times. Despite these issues, the game is considered optimized and largely free of significant bugs.

    • “There's a pretty good amount of content for the price, and it all seems optimized and, so far, bug-free for me.”
    • “The game runs smoothly without any crashes or major issues, which really enhances the overall experience.”
    • “I've played for hours without encountering any glitches, making it a stable and enjoyable game.”
    • “Often times, the best times are achieved with glitches, and when the devs patch them, it makes getting in the top 10 unachievable.”
    • “The only cons I can think of is that the limited voice lines can get grating after a while, as well as some of the top ten scores on levels using old glitches that have been since patched out, though I believe there is a way given by the developer to unpatch it if you do care about beating those scores.”
    • “As far as bugs and glitches are concerned, there have been a few instances where I noticed that when I scored a best time locally, the time was .011 or so faster than it was on my local time; not sure why this happened.”
  • emotional
    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Players report a strong emotional connection to the game, particularly through the poignant journey of Marty, a middle-aged man grappling with loss. The narrative evokes deep feelings, leading some to tears, while the quest for redemption and new experiences, symbolized by collecting beers, adds a layer of motivation and resilience to the emotional experience.

    • “Made me shed a tear.”
    • “The game follows the emotional journey of Marty, a metal-loving middle-aged man whose pride and joy was taken away from him.”
    • “Satan took my beer; I cried and didn't play the game for a while. Then I realized I could get a new beer every level, so I set out to get every single beer.”
