Rogue Warrior

"Rogue Warrior was a waste of time. Don't let the big name publisher fool you, Bethesda is probably for the worse for publishing this title. There is so little done right if anything that it is hard to warrant even the 2 hours it will take you finish the single player campaign, and with controls as flawed and useless as those found in Rogue Warrior I would not recommend even turning on the multi-player component, unless for a good laugh of course."

Overall, the narrative is seen as a weak point, failing to elevate the gameplay experience.

    • “The consistent and unpredictable plot twists kept me thinking to myself 'just one more chapter'.”

    • “Graphics nothing short of amazing.”
    • “The graphics are dated, the voice acting is corny, the story is bad, the gunplay is boring, the enemy AI is about as smart as a rat with half its brain missing, and even if the game were good, it's so short that anybody with any sort of FPS experience can complete it in under 2 hours.”
    • “The game is really tragic in many respects, starting with the graphics which stun the eyes with its ugliness; gunplay; moronic artificial intelligence; poor stability; the plot as if it were written by an edgy third-grader of primary school; hilariously bad dialogues; the game is painfully linear with a horribly boring level design; generally lacks polish; dead multiplayer, and a lot more.”
    • “The graphics and textures are overall dreary, muddy and would be shameful to the eye on a PS2 or original Xbox, let alone at its 2009 release.”

Overall, the end credits music stands out as a highlight, providing a memorable and entertaining conclusion to the experience.

    • “The music in this game is awesome, it's genuinely cool and adds to the fun.”
    • “The end credits song that is mashed together of the various expletives Mickey Rourke throws out during the game can only truly be appreciated if you slog through this two-hour mess.”
    • “The music sounds like it’s from a free music library, but probably isn’t, while the graphics and audio also only meet the quality standard of free template assets.”
    • “In a lot of games, I end up turning off the music because it’s too depressing or repetitive.”
  • optimization
    39 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's optimization is widely criticized, with many players reporting severe stuttering, frequent crashes, and overall poor performance, making it nearly unplayable for some. While a few users managed to find workarounds to improve stability, the general consensus is that the game is not well-optimized, particularly on PC, leading to a frustrating experience. Despite these issues, some players found enjoyment in the game, largely due to Mickey Rourke's memorable performance.

    • “I had to tweak things a little bit, so that I could play it at a smooth 60fps with no stuttering.”
    • “There's no boss battles, less than 10 missions, and the few times where the game may actually pose a challenge come from fake difficulty, due to the controls and performance being such an issue.”
    • “Can't go more than thirty seconds without crashing to desktop, and while it is working, there's horrific stuttering each second that makes it borderline impossible to play comfortably.”
    • “The stuttering was so unbelievable immediately dropping into the game (exactly every 2 seconds) that I couldn't even move around or look without completely freezing up.”
    • “I'm not sure if it's the netcode, bad hit registration, or other players just struggling to run this unoptimized game -- but the player movement is so incredibly janky that it's tough to get a reliable shot on target.”
  • stability
    20 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The stability of "Rogue Warrior" is widely criticized, with players reporting numerous bugs, glitches, and performance issues such as freezes and frame rate drops. Many users experienced significant troubleshooting challenges, including compatibility issues and the need for extensive adjustments to run the game. While a few players noted minimal glitches, the overall consensus is that the game is plagued by instability, making it frustrating to play.

    • “The PC version runs great, controls with a keyboard/mouse, and has native Xbox 360 controller support if you want it.”
    • “While a bit short, this older game seems mostly bug-free and has amusing commentary by Mickey Rourke.”
    • “Only after setting compatibility mode to Windows Vista and running as an administrator was I able to finally finish the game, but even then I still had problems with freezes and crashes to desktop.”
    • “All of this plus the ensemble of bugs and glitches that forced me to constantly restart levels make Rogue Warrior easily the worst game I have ever seen in my life, and I want a written apology from Richard Marcinko and Rebellion Studios for this travesty.”
    • “Extensive troubleshooting leaves the game at best 'running' but 'not running' randomly in task manager.”
  • replayability
    10 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Overall, the reviews indicate a stark divide in replayability perceptions. While some players find the game linear and lacking in content, leading to very low replay value, others praise its depth and multiple possibilities, suggesting a high replay value due to the potential for different outcomes. However, the consensus leans towards limited replayability, with many noting that once completed, the game offers little incentive to play again.

    • “Replay value: very low”
    • “Not a ton of replay value except to listen to the dialog, maybe beat it on other difficulties?”
    • “This is an incredibly well done game, with a multitude of possibilities, and one of the greatest replay values I've ever witnessed in a game since at any time during the game you have to say to yourself, 'I wonder what else could have happened back there.' 10/10 would play again, forever.”
    • “There isn't any replay value; once you beat this game, it's over.”
    • “The game is extremely linear, and that hurts its replayability a lot.”
    • “It has less than 3 hours worth of gameplay and zero replay value.”

While some find humor in the advertising content, the overall sentiment suggests that the monetization strategy detracts from the gaming experience, leading to a low score.

    • “Not only does it feel off, some hellspawn decided to make the spacebar the ads button and right click the grenade button, so every time you try to aim, you throw a grenade.”
    • “Advertising 4/10; would have scored it higher if given some of that sweet advertising cash.”
  • grinding
    4 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Reviews indicate that the grinding aspect of the game is generally well-received, with players appreciating the rewarding progression system that avoids becoming tedious. However, some express concerns about the game's short runtime, suggesting that a longer experience might lead to potential monotony. • “If a Call of Duty campaign was actually entertaining instead of boring and tedious.”
    • “I really enjoyed my time with this game, and really the biggest problem that I have with it is the amount of time it takes to complete, but maybe, had it been longer, even I, who can look past a lot of its more 'objective' problems, might have found it a tedious experience.”
    • “Everything I said before is absolutely true, but the terrible voice acting and amazing lines that lack any wit and are often super offensive and ridiculous makes this one of the best so-bad-it's-good games out there, and due to the short runtime, the bad gameplay never gets too tedious.”
  • atmosphere
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The atmosphere is criticized for being immature and lacking depth, with excessive swearing that detracts from the overall experience. Reviewers feel that the voicework fails to create a convincing or engaging environment, leaving it feeling flat and uninspired.

Reviews indicate that the character development in the game is minimal and lacks depth, with some users comparing it unfavorably to that found in an alphabet book.
