REDO!

Despite all the frustration, REDO! can be quite satisfying. In theory, you can finish the game in 5 to 6 hours. In reality, it will take you a lot longer, due to some of the flaws of the concept on which it is based. Despite the high-level challenge and numerous moments of frustrations, this game has a magnetic effect. If you are a Metroidvania fan this is a must try. The same goes for soulslike fans looking for a different kind of challenge. REDO! is a retro platformer that keeps you engaged no matter how mad it drives you. Review code provided by the publisher.

  • Unique and tactical combat system requiring strategic use of different weapons and enemy stamina management.
  • Well-designed interconnected map with meaningful shortcuts and a rewarding exploration experience despite no in-game map.
  • Lack of an in-game map causes disorientation and frustrating backtracking for some players.
  • Slow and clunky movement and combat with occasional unfair enemy placements and sparse save points increase difficulty and trial-and-error.
  • The game is relatively short with a somewhat anticlimactic or rushed ending and some bosses regarded as simplistic or underwhelming.
  • gameplay
    48 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The gameplay is a slow-paced, methodical survival horror experience with a focus on resource management, exploration, and a unique stun mechanic in combat. While the mechanics and level design are solid and immersive, some find the combat punishing, with sluggish controls and occasional frustrations, especially due to respawn and enemy behavior. Overall, it suits players who enjoy challenging, tense atmospheres rather than fast-paced action, offering rewarding progression for those who master its systems.

    • “If you like survival horror gameplay you owe it to yourself to give this a shot.”
    • “The mechanics work to create a tension between managing your resources (health and bullets) in a way that requires you to think through how you are approaching each encounter.”
    • “Its unique gameplay and progression is a standout even among the other indie smash hits of this generation.”
    • “Some enemies just get to ignore the stamina/stun mechanic.”
    • “Now: unfortunately there are some issues with the sluggish, clunky jump and run mechanics when it comes to platforming.”
    • “All of that said, there were a lot of frustrations related to some game mechanics and the lack of information both in and outside of the game.”
  • atmosphere
    36 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game’s atmosphere is widely praised for its immersive, foreboding, and creepy tone, effectively conveyed through detailed pixel art, a haunting soundtrack, and sound design. Many highlight its bleak, post-apocalyptic world and sense of loneliness, which deeply enhance the mood and player immersion. While some note the pacing is slow, the rich atmosphere remains the game’s standout and most memorable feature.

    • “The atmosphere, design, and music are top notch, and the game being fun and challenging is made even more impressive considering the whole game was made by one single person.”
    • “The atmosphere is appropriately creepy, environments are distinct and filled with shuffling metal zombies, crumbling ladders, and remnants of human civilization.”
    • “Great enemy design and variety, beautiful backgrounds, decent combat with interesting weapons, clever level design with lots of shortcuts and looping paths, an upgrade system that incentivizes exploration without being a burden, and some amazing and very atmospheric music that really helps sell the depressing, dead world.”
  • story
    32 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The story is atmospheric and cryptic, delivered mainly through scattered journal entries that encourage players to piece together lore in a slow-paced, exploratory manner reminiscent of Dark Souls or Cave Story. While praised for its intriguing premise and contribution to the game's tension and mood, it is also considered short, somewhat simplistic, and occasionally frustrating due to lack of clear direction or meaningful choices. Overall, the story enhances the survival horror experience but may leave some players wanting more depth and clarity.

    • “Buy this if you're looking for tense combat and exploration in a dark world full of biomechanical horrors with a cryptic story.”
    • “It is on the short side (close to 4 hours), with a bit more in the new game+ mode that adds extra lore to understand the full story of the game.”
    • “This is the kind of story that will have you hunt down every bit of lore, and even then require some interpretation on your end.”
    • “Story needs to be pieced together by notes scattered around and is rather lame.”
    • “Little to no story, no battle music, no feeling.”
    • “The 'story' is too simple, the ending predictable.”
  • music
    25 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The music in the game is generally praised for its atmospheric, minimalistic, and haunting qualities that effectively enhance the sense of isolation and mood, often described as a strong complement to the art and world design. However, some users find the soundtrack sparse or inadequate, with occasional critiques of the music being either too minimal or at times absent, impacting the overall experience. Overall, the soundtrack is seen as a key contributor to the game's immersive and eerie atmosphere.

    • “On the one hand, I was instantly enamored with the setting, the colour palette, the character design and her animations; and the subtle yet effective soundtrack worked wonders to convey a sense of isolation and decay that immediately reminded me of Silent Hill 2, of all things.”
    • “Interesting art and (dark) atmosphere, good music, rewarding (and sometimes punishing) gameplay, a good sense of progression, and overall an overwhelming sense of loneliness throughout made this a game I probably won't forget for awhile.”
    • “Music is atrocious, when it isn't non-existent.”
    • “Little to no story, no battle music, no feeling.”
    • “The soundtrack is very atmospheric and minimalistic, but the game's music and sound effects lack a bit overall.”
  • graphics
    10 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The graphics receive praise for their distinctive and atmospheric art style, often compared to the aesthetic of "Blame!", and are considered a strong point of the game. However, some critiques mention clunky movement, mediocre post-apocalyptic visuals, and occasional issues with enemy design and background blending. Overall, the visuals contribute significantly to the game's appeal despite minor inconsistencies.

    • “I love the art style, the premise, and many of the rooms look nice.”
    • “Very good atmosphere and art style.”
    • “The art style is fantastic.”
    • “Boring, clunky movement, mediocre post-apocalyptic art style, etc.”
    • “Graphically wise, some enemies look very out of place, while some structures you can climb on blend into the background too easily.”
    • “The nice things I can say are that I love the art style, the premise and a lot of the rooms (from the ones I've seen) look nice.”
  • grinding
    5 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Grinding in the game is often tedious due to slow movement, scarce save points, and frequent deaths that force players to backtrack through challenging enemy encounters repeatedly. The lack of a clear map and unclear in-game cues further add to the frustration, making progress feel slow and requiring cautious, short play sessions to avoid burnout.

    • “Despite the solid world design, save points are scarce, and dying - which you will do frequently and readily - often requires tediously retreading your steps, having to cross paths with several powerful, unstunnable enemies in a row, leading to repeated deaths on the same stretch.”
    • “As someone who dips in and out of games quite a bit, I know that returning after enough time for my mental map to fade would make for a needlessly tedious time.”
    • “There is a map obstacle that can only be destroyed by a specific weapon, which has no indication that it can be used for this purpose, and checkpoint backtracking can feel tedious to avoid losing progress.”
  • stability
    2 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game's stability is currently lacking polish, with buggy enemy attacks, missing animations, and occasional issues like unobtainable achievements. Some boss fights can be easily exploited, and larger enemy groups sometimes overwhelm the system. However, as the game is still in early access, these issues may be addressed in future updates.

    • “The game lacks polishing, such as: no game over animation, some enemy attacks are a bit buggy, boss fights are easily cheeseable, though the game is still in early access and some of this stuff might change.”
    • “No map, bigger groups of enemies were sometimes too much, inconclusive story, controls may feel clunky, buggy/unobtainable achievements.”
  • replayability
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Users highlight that the game's length contributes positively to its replayability, offering extended engagement and multiple playthrough opportunities.

  • character development
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

Users praise the character design and animations for their visual appeal and effective contribution to the game's atmosphere. The subtle soundtrack enhances the sense of isolation, enriching the overall character development and emotional impact.

  • emotional
    1 mentions Positive Neutral Negative

The game offers a deeply emotional and challenging experience that resonates strongly with players, provided they can overlook minor drawbacks.
