Red Wings: Aces of the Sky

It's a nice title for a bit of fun, and I can see a group of people enjoying it more. Invite some mates round, a few beers, and passing the pro-controller around the group than in a single-player slog. The split-screen option is fun, but still not enough to save this from being a game of animated mediocrity.

  • Fun and accessible arcade-style WWI dogfighting with simple controls, ideal for casual players and beginners.
  • Unique comic book art style and attractive graphics that create a pleasant visual experience.
  • Supports couch co-op and multiplayer modes, enhancing replayability and social play.
  • Poor PC controls: no mouse aiming support, difficult keyboard controls, and gamepad-focused UI that frustrate many players.
  • Repetitive and short campaign with limited mission variety, leading to boredom after a few hours.
  • Gameplay balance issues including frequent AI kamikaze attacks, sudden difficulty spikes, and frustrating score-based progression requiring repeated mission attempts.
  • story

    113 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
15% positive mentions, 78% neutral mentions, 7% negative mentions

The story in this WW1-themed arcade flight game is generally considered simple, short, and somewhat repetitive, with two nearly identical campaigns and minimal historical depth. While the narrative is cheesy and lightly touches on emotional themes, it mainly serves as a backdrop for combat-focused gameplay rather than delivering a compelling or well-developed plot. Players highlight a lack of variety and meaningful storytelling, though some appreciate the art style and lighthearted tone.

    • “As for content there are two story campaigns both set during WW1, the triple entente and the triple alliance.”
    • “The two campaigns are selectable at any time with a set of 50 missions split between them.”
    • “The campaign story is extremely cheesy (which I found delightful) while still hitting emotional themes common to most stories set in the Great War.”
    • “Story: some vague references to historical squads and people in cutscenes, but not very informative about historical events nor a fully fledged out story-line.”
    • “No idea what the single player story is all about, narrative is all over the place.”
    • “Story is meh and there's nothing special about it.”
  • graphics

    56 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
50% positive mentions, 45% neutral mentions, 5% negative mentions

The game features a distinctive, cartoonish, and comic book-inspired art style with cel-shaded visuals that many find charming and well-suited to its WWI theme and arcade-style gameplay. Graphics are generally praised for their smooth performance and unique aesthetic, though some note a lack of graphical settings and occasional minor glitches. Overall, the visuals are a standout aspect that enhances the game's appeal despite some technical shortcomings.

    • “A special skin is available for each plane that shares a unique aesthetic in the same vein as the Flying Dutchman shown in the Steam promotional material.”
    • “Being able to hide in clouds was also a nice touch, as are the lovely cel-shaded graphics.”
    • “Despite its simplistic art style, it still looks very beautiful and runs smoothly because of it.”
    • “It's also very amateurish in some ways, like the fact that there are really no graphical settings (including vsync) and the existence of a skill that plays a brief cutscene every single time you use it, which can be annoying.”
    • “No graphics options, not even vsync to remove all the screen tearing.”
    • “Unplayable, still stuck in menu, not possible to open stats, graphics glitches.”
  • gameplay

    45 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
33% positive mentions, 54% neutral mentions, 13% negative mentions

Gameplay in this game offers a mix of arcade-style flying with simple, enjoyable mechanics and satisfying combat elements like pistol finishers, though it can feel repetitive and lacks depth over time. Controls are often criticized for being unintuitive, with poor mouse support and limited customization options, leading to frustration in prolonged play. While the game has moments of fun and a solid core loop, its gameplay quality tends to degrade with longer sessions, making it more appealing for short bursts or to genre enthusiasts.

    • “The flight mechanics, the way you use your abilities, and especially the finishers which, in a cool historical detail, actually show the pilots using their pistols, is a lot of fun (it’s the only game I know that captures this early WWI reality, using their pistols).”
    • “The gameplay itself is fun and simple enough, and trying to get 3 stars every mission so you can get more perks and become stronger is very satisfying.”
    • “This is a very underrated game to say the least, the gameplay mechanics are easy to learn and the story parts are actually not half bad at all, the game easily gets hard but overall has some very satisfying moments.”
    • “Your mouse is all but pointless while playing, as no gameplay or menu element benefits from its use. Even something simple like audio adjustment fails. Additionally, menus will seemingly forget their own keybinds during extended play, replacing all menu prompts with the exact same input.”
    • “All in all, I enjoyed about 5 hours of my 7-hour playtime of Red Wings: Aces of the Sky. I recommend picking it up during deep sales ($2) with the notice that the controls are bothersome and the gameplay quality degrades with length and difficulty.”
    • “Gameplay suffers from lack of button reassigning, which is really annoying. One of the worst special moves, calling up the squadron, actually requires a target lock to confirm the use. During that, you cannot use your other abilities, which is infuriating during dogfights when you accidentally press it.”
  • music

    7 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
57% positive mentions, 14% neutral mentions, 29% negative mentions

The music in the game is generally well-received, described as good and enjoyable, especially enhancing the flying experience. However, some users find the soundtrack repetitive and wish for a more original or consistent selection, with occasional critiques of the opera music choice. Overall, the music adds a fun and entertaining touch to the game.

    • “Very good music and flying is fun.”
    • “Also, the selection of music is a nice touch.”
    • “The art style is amazing, the music and 'here-and-there' acting is fun, and the story is mad entertaining!”
    • “Repetitive soundtrack.”
    • “I wish there was an original soundtrack, but it is not a big flaw.”
  • stability

    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
33% positive mentions, 0% neutral mentions, 67% negative mentions

The game's stability is inconsistent, running well and smoothly on the Steam Deck for some users, while others experience frequent bugs, screen hangs, and graphical glitches that hinder gameplay and menu access.

    • “Runs great and is really fun on Steam Deck!”
    • “Sucks and boring game, buggy and suddenly screen hangs during gameplay, need to restart whole game.”
    • “Unplayable, still gets stuck in menu, not possible to open stats, graphics glitches.”
  • grinding

    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
0% positive mentions, 0% neutral mentions, 100% negative mentions

Grinding in the game is relatively simple but somewhat repetitive, offering a fun arcade experience without requiring excessive time investment. Couch co-op adds to the enjoyment, though prolonged grinding is generally not necessary or rewarding.

    • “You'll need a second life for grinding.”
    • “Not worth grinding for many hours, just a fun arcade game.”
    • “Simple, a tad grindy, but it reminds me of Red Baron.. lots of fun, and you can couch coop.”
  • optimization

    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
100% positive mentions, 0% neutral mentions, 0% negative mentions

The game is well-optimized, running smoothly even on non-gaming laptops without dedicated graphics cards. Its simplistic art style contributes to stable performance without compromising visual appeal.

    • “My laptop is not a gaming computer, without a dedicated graphics card, but the game runs smoothly!”
    • “Despite its simplistic art style, it still looks very beautiful and runs smoothly because of it.”
    • “Video lag performance.”
  • replayability

    3 mentions Positive Neutral Negative
33% positive mentions, 34% neutral mentions, 33% negative mentions

Replayability is primarily driven by unlocking three stars per mission, offering some incentive to replay. However, overall replay value is limited, especially since unlocked skins have few opportunities for use. The game is more enjoyable with a controller, which may affect replay experiences on keyboard.

    • “Replayability comes from unlocking 3 stars for each mission.”
    • “And as it does not provide much replay value, you have only limited occasions to use all those unlocked skins.”
  • atmosphere

Overall, the atmosphere can feel inconsistent but still offers enjoyable moments for some players.

    • “Great atmosphere and gameplay that makes you feel like Porco Rosso.”
