The gameplay is described as challenging and engaging, evoking a 'souls-like' satisfaction despite its mechanical difficulties and lack of refined controls. While the game features various upgrades and mechanics, many players feel that these do not significantly impact gameplay, leading to frustration. Overall, the game offers a mix of fluid movement and simple mechanics, but some players wish for a more forgiving approach and better execution of its systems.
“The positives outweigh the negatives, because the gameplay is fun and at the very least does provoke the same 'souls-like' feeling of satisfaction when you progress despite the game's limitations.”
“There are 22 scrolls and armor variations total in the game and these create the differing gameplay styles in the game.”
“Gameplay and movement is very fluid and engaging.”
“It's a really frustrating game, because it looks like the artists made a good game, then whoever was responsible for the gameplay just kind of threw something together from another game, didn't finish, and called it good.”
“It has to be said that over half of the upgrades in the game really have no effect on gameplay.”
“The randomly generating map at some areas does little to affect gameplay at most points!”

The music in the game has received mixed reviews, with many praising its beauty, composition, and ability to enhance the atmosphere, making it engaging and immersive. However, some players found it overwhelming or annoying, leading to frustration, particularly due to a lack of options to adjust the audio settings. Overall, while the soundtrack is celebrated for its quality and emotional impact, it can also be polarizing for some players.
“The music in particular is really well mixed, composed, and engaging.”
“The soundtrack is just as colorful, lulling you into a sense of calm before piling on a little pressure at those critical moments.”
“Great atmosphere, really tough and a great soundtrack.”
“The part which is really bad is that I can't even change the controls in the options; I can't change much in the options at all, I can't even turn down that annoying music.”
“I did not play this game for very long because the music made me want to kill myself. Well, I think it's the music... maybe it's the music and getting lost wandering in this ugly mess.”

The story is generally considered weak and lacking depth, with players noting that it becomes confusing, especially towards the end. While the premise of collecting powerful souls is present, many feel that the narrative fails to engage and provide sufficient context for the gameplay. Overall, the visuals and level design are praised, but the storyline leaves much to be desired.
“While yes, the idea of collecting powerful souls for X to achieve X is the story, and the controls are similar.”
“Once making your way through the underworld, you face the final boss and complete the game, are eaten up by a clam, and transform into a large beast as best I can tell; the story gets really fuzzy here.”
“The detail put into the graphics is astonishing, though the storyline could use a little more.”
“It's hard to get into, what with the lack of story and context for your actions and the fact that you have to start all over when you die.”

Players find the grinding in the game to be tedious and frustrating, particularly due to clunky combat mechanics and repetitive level clears. The design choices, such as the potential to fall back to earlier areas, exacerbate the grind, making the experience feel obstructive rather than enjoyable. Despite its potential for fun, the game often feels more like a chore.
“The fighting is mostly clunky and the level clears are very tedious after you've done them even once.”
“Equally as irritating in the Skyforge area, you can actually fall all the way back down into the starting area, resulting in more tedious fighting and navigating to get back to where you were.”
“It has a lot of heart and it could have been a lot of fun, but it keeps reminding you that it chose to be tedious and obstructive instead.”

Many users express disappointment with the game's replayability, noting that once the final boss is defeated, there is little incentive to play again. The consensus is that the content does not justify the price, as players feel there isn't enough to warrant multiple playthroughs.
“The only other issue I have with the game is its lack of replayability once you finally beat the last boss.”
“At the moment, there is not enough game nor replayability for 15 dollars.”

Players find the humor in the game largely stems from the comical AI behavior of enemies, who often struggle with basic navigation, such as failing to jump over ledges or forgetting the player’s presence. This leads to amusing situations where players can easily outmaneuver and defeat these foes, adding a lighthearted element to the gameplay.
“It's pretty easy to juke and kill big enemies because the AI of the enemies is pretty hilarious at times. They can't jump to a simple ledge, just stand there, or forget about you and walk away because they can't navigate a narrow spot where you can constantly attack and harass them without being hurt.”

80%An Unending Cycle
Oblitus is a challenging 2D platformer where you have a shield, a spear, and one life. Dying means restarting the game from beginning and doing everything all over. Is it possible to break the cycle? Our review.
80%Oblitus Review (PC)
Oblitus could have been a great game, but unfortunately it's not. It's hard to get into, what with the lack of story and context for your actions and the fact that you have to start all over when you die. Furthermore, it seems uncertain of its goal. It requires precision while moving but lacks the crisp controls of titles like Super Meat Boy, and it requires the trial and error of timing-based combat games like Dark Souls, without having its mechanics as refined. It has a lot of heart and it could have been a lot of fun, but it keeps reminding you that it chose to be tedious and obstructive instead.
